Jean Nouvel's National Museum of Qatar to Open on March 28th Posted: 18 Mar 2019 04:00 AM PDT The Jean Nouvel-designed National Museum of Qatar is set to open in Doha on March 28th 2019. The architectural concept for the scheme has been inspired by the desert rose, and seeks to create a dialogue between the fluid, contemporary architectural form of the museum, and the historic objects it will contain. As quoted in a recent press release by Qatar Museums, the scheme will "give a voice to Qatar's heritage whilst celebrating its future." Carlo Ratti Reveals Design for the Italian Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020 Posted: 18 Mar 2019 02:00 AM PDT Carlo Ratti Associati has published details of their competition-winning design for the Italian Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020, designed in collaboration with Italo Rota, Matteo Gatto, and F&M Ingegneria. Inspired by Dubai's marine tradition, the pavilion's construction sequence will see three boats arrive in Dubai by sea, before being raised and turned upside down to become the roof of the pavilion. Titled "Sailing Beauty," the pavilion seeks to explore new ways in which "beauty connects people," embodying the theme of Italy's participation in Dubai Expo 2020. The pavilion also pays tribute to the long history of explorers throughout the centuries who "sailed the seas and wove together a shared Mediterranean cultural heritage." "My Journey is Starting Now": Shohei Shigematsu of OMA New York Posted: 18 Mar 2019 12:00 AM PDT Where does originality and independent thinking come from? The answer is prosaically straight forward – from an inquiring individual, and an experimental environment wouldn't hurt to stimulate it. Rem Koolhaas is credited with fostering such an environment, both through building his practice, Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), a 300-architect network of seven global offices, and teaching at Harvard's GSD, as well as lecturing all over the world. Koolhaas now has eight partners. One of the eight, since 2008, is Shohei Shigematsu who heads OMA New York since 2006. The studio originally numbered just a handful of people and over the years has grown into a large practice of 75 architects with a focus on projects in North America. Born in 1973, in Fukuoka, Japan, Shigematsu likes to point out that his birth coincided with the moment when Japan's economy started to decline. Still, the post-war generation of his parents believed that the economy was going to grow and keep modernizing. It did, and the process was very integral with new construction, so architecture was of interest from an early age. When Shigematsu was ten, his father was invited to teach science at an American university. That presented an opportunity for the whole family to spend one year in Boston, which also contributed to Shigematsu's decision to study architecture. We met for the following conversation at OMA New York to discuss the architect's role in the company, his search for personal identity, and, of course, architecture's top priority – its concern with beauty. Stefano Boeri Architetti Creates a Vertical Forest for Tirana 2030 Master Plan Posted: 17 Mar 2019 10:30 PM PDT Albania's capital city, Tirana, is slated to receive the country's first Vertical Forest in a scheme designed by Milanese architecture firm, Stefano Boeri Architetti. Originating as part of the city's new development master plan completed by the firm 3 years ago, the building will greatly increase the amount of greenery within and around the metropolitan area. Tirana's Vertical Forest will contain 21 floors above ground with 4 more below and will be populated by 105 apartment units above a primarily commercial ground floor. Storage Solution for Small Houses: Useful Examples Posted: 17 Mar 2019 09:00 PM PDT Dense cities mean small homes. With more and more frequency we are forced to adapt to spaces within which some elements simply do not fit. As architects, these restrictions actually provide us with opportunities and remind us that our goal is to give precise solutions to specific problems. Designing with infinite number square meters and/or an unlimited budget is practically unheard of. What's the key to accommodating everything? Let's review some effective storage solutions for minimum, tight spaces. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
