How Do Architects Approach Interior Design in China?

Since the beginning of modernism, countless architects have expressed their architectural theories and concepts through the design of residential interiors. In Vanna Venturi House, Venturi exaggerated the scale of internal components to create a counterbalance to the small house, expressing complexity and contradiction. In Villa Mairea, Alvar Aalto built an 'imperfect' home, as a way of rebelling against the strict aesthetic standards of functionalism.

Conceptual and theoretical experimentation of housing interiors in China has had a delayed start due to political influences and differing pace of development. While the birth of communism lead to standardisation, rapid urbanisation and economic rebirth has provided the perfect catalyst for architects to challenge the status quo and conceptualise new definitions of interior and living.

In a short but prodigious career Raymond Mathewson Hood (March 29, 1881 – August 14, 1934) had an outsized influence on twentieth century architecture. Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Hood was the son of a box manufacturer in an affluent Baptist family.[1] He attended Brown University before studying at MIT School of Architecture, later graduating from the École des Beaux-Arts in 1911. While in Paris, Hood met John Mead Howells, who in 1922 would select him as a partner for the design of the Chicago Tribune Tower. The team would beat out many more avant-garde entries by the likes of Walter Gropius, Adolf Loos, and Eliel Saarinen, with their own Neo-Gothic edifice that mimicked the Butter Tower of Rouen Cathedral.

Examining Archigram's Ideas and Their Pursuit of Style

Europe in the 1960's was the incubator for the emergence of young, provocative, and avant-garde architecture radicals including Archizoom, Superstudio, Ant Farm, and UFO. These groups rebelled against traditional architecture dogma in favor of exalting tropes that celebrated counterculture ideals, and an interest in designs that could extend both time and space. Archigram, the London-based faction of this movement, didn't try to reinvent modernist principles, but instead tried to accelerate them and push the conservative climate to become more future-proof. Rightfully so, they felt that art and architecture was falling behind with their inability to keep up with products and technological advancements that were already a part of daily life. While Archigram's ideas and drawings were often criticized as being frivolous, the group's prophecies about the future have been realized in many ways, and still largely influence architectural discourse in the present day.
