OMA / David Gianotten Designs New Office Building in Amsterdam Posted: 24 Aug 2021 10:30 PM PDT OMA / David Gianotten has revealed the design for a five-story office building in Amsterdam, replacing a 1980s bank headquarters. Located on one of the city's main avenues among high-end offices, housing and luxury hotels, the architecture of the new project is shaped by the characteristics of its surroundings. Featuring interlocking glass volumes towards the boulevard and brick-clad facades towards the residential area, Apollolaan 171 creates a dialogue with both the green avenue of Amsterdam's south district and the neighbouring 20th-century Berlage architecture. Bathroom & Kitchen Fixtures: 12 Projects to Get You Inspired Posted: 24 Aug 2021 10:00 PM PDT As an architectural project comes to its last phases, it is time to put together the smaller details in bathrooms and kitchens, which means choosing finishes for the walls and floors, as well as the countertops, and picking the right fittings and fixtures. These elements are essential for a well-designed space, regardless of the style. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Locality, Legality, and Limiting Landscapes: The Story Behind Switzerland’s Villa Vals Posted: 24 Aug 2021 09:00 PM PDT The rustic village of Vals in the Swiss Alps is one of the country's most picturesque areas, located at an altitude of 1250 meters above sea level with numerous exceptional projects. The main square is surrounded by original Vals houses roofed with stone tiles made of Vals quartzite. Throughout the years, the village maintained its authentic residential and rural typology, making sure that its agriculture and rural fabric remained intact. Perhaps the most powerful natural resource of the Vals Valley, one that has nurtured its landscape and wilderness, is the water. For millions of years, ice and rain have forged the deeply-cut topography, and provided the village with a 30-degree thermal source, the only one in the Grisons Canton which springs straight from the ground. One of the most notable architectures in Vals is The Thermal Spa designed by 2009 Pritzker Laureate Peter Zumthor. The secluded structure is built with local quartzite, a stone that blends the elements of water and stone to create "the perfect wellness experience". Another iconic architecture tucked within the mountains of Vals is one that takes advantage of the local material, structural typology, and topography, a project that leaves the original landscape intact and subtly intervenes to create a one-of-a-kind award-winning vacation home; The Villa Vals. Posted: 24 Aug 2021 01:00 AM PDT When David Chipperfield was asked about what visitors should expect to see when he concludes the renovation of Mies van der Rohe's Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, he said: "Imagine a 1965 Mercedes. It looks fine, but it's falling apart on the inside. We want to put it in the shop, take it apart and put it back together again, so when someone turns on the switch - the engine will work." Due to the ongoing pandemic health regulations, the 2021 re-opening saw a limited number of journalists and visitors to tour alongside Chipperfield and explore the newly-renovated architecture. Editor and photographer Gili Merin had the opportunity to photograph the project during the pre-opening event and interview the world-renowned architect. Green Walls, Trellises, Flower Displays and Plant Pots: Integrating Vegetation Indoors Posted: 24 Aug 2021 12:30 AM PDT Not every architectural project can incorporate a landscaping project, consider a garden or access to ample green space. Smaller spaces need more creative strategies to incorporate vegetation. Regardless of the context, plants offer benefits in all types of spaces, such as indoor temperature regulation, an option for sustainable production on a smaller scale than a greenhouse, in addition to their aesthetic qualities. In this article, we present 4 simple strategies and a selection of examples for incorporating plants in small-scale spaces, all of which can be found in Architonic's Planting section.
