BIG and ICON Imagine Project Olympus, a Space-Based Construction System Developed with NASA Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:30 PM PDT BIG has partnered up with ICON, developer of advanced construction technologies, and with SEArch+ (Space Exploration Architecture) to imagine humanity's home in another world. Working with NASA, the collaboration seeks to develop a "space-based construction system that could support future exploration of the Moon". FCBStudios Designs New Lumina Village for Stretford Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:00 PM PDT Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios has received approval for Lumina Village, a redevelopment of the former Kellogg's site in Stretford. Approved by the Trafford Council's planning committee, the mixed-use design takes its name from lumens as a nod to the site's history and the future of the neighborhood. The focal point of the new community will be a green space surrounded by local businesses and contemporary workspaces. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
When the American Dream Became the Urban Planning Nightmare Posted: 01 Oct 2020 09:00 PM PDT For nearly a century, the areas of urban sprawl where every single-family home has its own yard, garage, and white picket fence represented the peak of life aspiration. Homeownership and the idea of claiming space away from the hustle and bustle of the city core was once considered the ideal lifestyle and the pinnacle of the American Dream. But as time went on, and socio-economic conditions shifted, cities that were once filled with these single-family homes realized that perhaps these zoning regulations were outdated, and new solutions needed to be created to prevent the current housing crisis from growing even more out of control. Reflecting on the African American Experience at the Harvard GSD Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:30 PM PDT This article was originally published on Common Edge. In the wake of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police, the United States erupted in protests and demonstrations. The fervor generated by that event reached the world of architecture education a couple of weeks later, when two groups at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD)—the African American Student Union (AASU) and AfricaGSD—posted a public statement, Notes on Credibility, calling for reforms at the school. Four days later, Dean Sarah M. Whiting posted a response, Towards a New GSD. Shortly after, I reached out to the groups, and they put me in touch with two of their members: Caleb Negash, a second-year student in the MArch program, and Andrew Mbuthia Ngure, a third-year student in the same program. Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:30 PM PDT Every project begins with a design, and ends with an attractive and functional building. What happens between these two end points is where it gets interesting - and challenging. The construction process is complicated. It means meeting and exceeding expectations in design, affordability and constructibility. It means overcoming hurdles and facilitating smooth transitions from design to engineering to construction. And for complex projects with more unusual features and elements, the risk factors increase exponentially. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
