Posted: 07 Oct 2020 12:30 AM PDT Scheduled originally from August to November 2020, the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale was postponed, like every other event this year, and will be held from May 22nd to November 21st, 2021, due to the pandemic. Questioning "How will we live together?" the original statement of curator Hashim Sarkis, called upon architects "to imagine spaces in which we can generously live together". Relevant today more than ever, with the current worldwide circumstances, the theme of the Biennale is in fact the focus of interest of the global scene. After having discussed "How will we live together?" over a year ago with Hashim Sarkis in Venice, ArchDaily had the chance to open the debate once more and re-examine the question of the Architecture Biennale. In a two-part interview, the architect tackles the theme, the Biennale, the present situation, and the future. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Diller Scofidio + Renfro's 550-Ton Steel Bridge Lands in Colorado Springs Posted: 07 Oct 2020 10:00 PM PDT A new 550-ton steel bridge has been placed next to the new United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs. The bridge was designed by the same team as the adjacent Olympic & Paralympic complex - Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Anderson Mason Dale, and KL&A - while taking inspiration from the motion of athletes. The design features a 250-foot curved steel structure that was made to float above the rail yard. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Pikler Pedagogy in Architecture: Wooden Furniture and Spatial Freedom Posted: 07 Oct 2020 09:00 PM PDT Emmi Pikler was a Hungarian pediatrician who introduced, in the years after World War II, a new philosophy on early childhood care and learning for children up to the age of 3. It was after the birth of her first child that she began to question: what happens when a child is allowed to develop freely? The observed results culminated in the introduction of a new methodology. The Pikler approach facilitates the free development of children by caring for their physical health and providing affection but largely respecting their individuality and autonomy. Following this logic, intervention by adults becomes mostly unnecessary. Rather, for the child to experience space while moving freely, certain care must be taken in the preparation of the environments themselves.
