Office and Retail Building Nowy Świat 2.0 / AMC – Andrzej M. Chołdzyński Posted: 01 Jul 2017 10:00 PM PDT
From the architect. Nowy Świat 2.0 office and services building, located between the former headquarters of the Polish Communist Party House (now: The Banking and Financial Center office building) and Warsaw Stock Exchange buildings, adjoins a nineteenth-century tenement house. The five floors represent more than 4100 sq. meters of office and ca. 2000 sq. meters of retail space. The ground floor, the mezzanine and -1 level are occupied by retail stores. On the top level there is a terrace with a view on Three Crosses Square and The Na Książęcem Park. The idea was to create an architectural keystone between existing buildings and at the same time a kind of place that opens the Royal Route to the 18th Century Na Książęcem Park, designed by Szymon Bogumił Zug. Given that the former headquarters of the Polish Communist Party House is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the new building refrains from tampering with the integrity of its structure and facades. The buildings are connected through the underground floor. Nowy Świat 2.0 tries to combine the rich tectonics of the facades of neighboring buildings in an ethereal and abstract way. In opposition to the monumental and rectangular composition of the two buildings, the new building brings into the area of their mutual relations a smooth, built on a wide arch, east-west facade, which ends in oval corners. The project has the ambition of enriching the Royal Route with the perpendicular, sculptural and expressive zone that opens The Royal Road to The Na Książęcem Park. The building transforms the place recognised as abandoned and peripheral into a recognizable and self-identified space. The architectural intentions of the project materialize in minimalist, abstract matter using materials such as raw reinforced concrete, glass, Cor- Ten steel, natural stone The building along with the former Party House forms an oval city square which brings back this quarter to Warsaw not only in symbolic but also in functional and social spheres. S. Félix Apartment / AF Arquitectos Posted: 01 Jul 2017 07:00 PM PDT
From the architect. Located on Rua de São Félix in Lapa, the apartment is on the ground floor of a 3 storey building, built in 1986. With a construction area of 72 m2 and a backyard with 63 m2 that is located in the rear of the building, the program intended the extension of the house to the rear wing, allowing to increase the construction area respond clearly to the programmatic intentions of the customers. In this sense, the main objective of the project was to adjust the functional program, combined with the desire to strengthen the relationship between indoor and outdoor, not limiting the house to the glass, but to the garden. The premise established for the development of the project assumes, as a priority, the spatial quality, exploring the inherent functionality of each space assuming a new, more modern language that will allow a new way of dwelling. In this sense, the new enlarged volume is assumed to be moderate compared to the existing construction, in that sense it was decided to use a solution in which the spans are defined in order to allow the emphasis on the transition / connection between the interior and the exterior. The social area, kitchen, dining area and living room merge into one space, creating a relationship with outside essential for living and the way of living the house itself. Wellington on the Park / FoxJohnston Posted: 01 Jul 2017 01:00 PM PDT
From the architect. Fox Johnston's newest completed multi residential project, Wellington on the Park, Waterloo, designed for Barua Group, includes many hallmarks of the practice's distinctive architectural signature: bold sculptural forms, inside/outside permeability, nuanced use of materiality, internal courtyards and apartment gardens, and abundant light and space. This is bold, confident architecture that seamlessly connects inside and outside, public and private spaces, with a dramatic saw tooth roof, expansive park views, inner courtyard, private balconies and rooftop gardens. Inside, one has a pervasive sense of light, space and wellbeing, and of remaining intimately connected to the nearby park. Wellington on the Park comprises 85 units, the top six with undulating ceilings and double height cathedral living spaces under a saw topped roofline, providing unparalleled solar access and space. Fox Johnston was appointed to design both the architecture and the interiors for the building, ensuring all aspects of the project work together to deliver a seamless indoor and outdoor experience for apartment owners. Apartment orientation and layout, natural robust materials and even the mirror kitchen splashbacks have been conceived to enhance this feeling, reflecting the park and bringing it into the apartment. The way the master planning of this building has been resolved ensures that all perimeter apartments faced east and north, and each apartment benefits from a sunny aspect with views and outlook. Terrace and expansive rooftop gardens enhance the sense of being connected to the park and outdoors, while providing sheltered and welcoming places to rest and relax, and grow vegetables. The architects have used a mix of facade materials to break down the building volume and articulate the facade. Inside, a palette of warm natural materials creates welcoming, relaxed living spaced. Materials include Off-form concrete, Simmental Silver brick, Falzonal Flat-sheet Aluminium Cladding Colour: Mattgraudunkel, Fundermax barrique oak soffit cladding, Oak Flooring, Oak Veneer for kitchens, Limestone and mosaic tiles for bathroom This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
MVRDV's Tainan Axis Starts Construction in Taiwan Posted: 01 Jul 2017 09:00 AM PDT This week a groundbreaking ceremony was held for Tainan Axis, a project by MVRDV, and local architects The Urbanist Collaborative and LLJ Architects that is set to offer the Taiwanese city a revitalized plaza and green corridor. William Lai, the Mayor of Tainan, joined the Urban Development Bureau of Tainan City and the local architects to mark the beginning of construction. Tainan Axis offers a reconnection between the city and its canal through the demolition of the China-Town Mall, an existing building that has long hindered water access. Along with a re-established contact point with the canal, the design also aims to encourage residents and visitors to interact with public spaces. The project engages the area of the city known as the T-axis, with the China-Town plaza on one vertical and Haian Road on its perpendicular. The focus of the design is in the plaza which will turn into a public park featuring a lagoon, dunes, and playgrounds. The introduction of an urban lagoon is a reference to Tainan's natural water networks that conducted the city's fishing industry until the 20th century. To attract visitors to the space, the perimeter of the plaza will accommodate retail kiosks, a tourist info point, teahouse, and art gallery. Haian road, which is currently a destination for restaurants and nightlife, will be revitalized as a green corridor with reduced traffic and increased vegetation. Complete closure of street traffic at night will allow for a bustling business and pedestrian hub.
MVRDV, The Urbanist Collaborative, and LLJ Architects won the competition to design the space in 2015 and final completion of the project is set for April 2018. News Via: MVRDV.

Chablé Resort Hotel Restoration / Central de Proyectos Posted: 01 Jul 2017 06:00 AM PDT
From the architect. The project to reactivate the old Hacienda San Antonio Chable for a new hotel comprises the restoration and adaptation of the ancient buildings that make up the main settlement of the hacienda, as well as the open spaces, squares and gardens surrounding them. The hacienda, whose first records obtained date from the year 1813, began as a corn and livestock farm, and later as an henequen fiber production site. In order of construction, the hacienda complex is made up of a square surrounded by the main house, the administrator's house, orchards and their irrigation canals, livestock pens, machinery room, the courtyards and an eclectic styled portal, surrounded by workmen dwellings. The restoration. While in some spaces and buildings the original construction system was restored, in other cases the intervention criteria contemplated the preservation and consolidation of ruined spaces to evidence the passage of time, the action of nature and the place's historical value. In exterior spaces such as squares, pens and orchards a rescue of the vegetal landscape was carried out, since years of abandonment kept them under a thick layer of weed, preventing the normal development of existing trees and affecting the space for local culture of ingredients needed in the hotel. In that sense, more than 3000 new plants were incorporated, both decorative and consumer. As part of the main hull assembly a cenote (underground water cavern) was found. With the help of a multidisciplinary team we carried out the cleaning and rehabilitation of its natural waterflows, generating the heart and image of the new hotel. V8 Architects to Expand Renzo Piano's Tilted KPN Tower in Rotterdam Posted: 01 Jul 2017 05:00 AM PDT A year ago, Dutch telecom company KPN announced the move from its former headquarters in The Hague, to the famously leaning tower designed by Renzo Piano, at the foot of Rotterdam's Erasmus Bridge. Completed in 2000, the tower is now set to undergo extensive renovation and expansion as part of the company's relocation, to be headed by local firm V8 Architects with the intention of creating a new distinctive entry of the Wilhelminapier. Piano himself was consulted in the design process, with the final proposal receiving his approval. "As a Rotterdam office, we are proud to have been asked to bring this characteristic building—and the first tower on the Wilhelminapier—to new life," said Michiel Raaphorst of V8." And we are honored our intervention is welcomed by Renzo Piano." With a new 20 year lease agreement attached to the building, KPN have the opportunity to add further enhancements to what is already a distinctive building. The intention is to achieve this in a sustainable manner, creating viable future workplaces from existing offices in The Netherlands. The core of the project looks to maintain the identity and integrity of the existing tower with interventions. V8's proposed renovation entails a complete glass façade, complimenting the existing pylon by wrapping around it smoothly. The new plinth offers an element of transparency at the base of the tower on the Wilhelminapier, creating three access points from the street, the square, and the waterfront. The extension will include an auditorium to accommodate 350 people, 2 restaurants, 1600 workstations and Experience Centre, to increase collaboration and community events in the area. With construction underway, work on the KPN Tower's renovations is set to be completed by the end of 2017.

Chacabuco Battle Viewpoint / Felipe Ovalle Fuica Posted: 01 Jul 2017 02:00 AM PDT
From the architect. The proposed project aims to give value to the territory where Chacabuco's battle took place. Due to the Bicentenary of one of the most important battles to the Chile's Independence and after huge historical and existing background research, it is proposed an intervention which reveals the confrontation. The project is implemented through the use of two converged aerial structure. The historical presence of both armies are put on scene. They are represented symbolically for their own position in battlefield. The purpose of the design is to build a self-enclosing tour using the historical importance of their territory. There are two large aerial walkways which are culminated in two viewpoints with an interpretative floors . Each one of them represents one of the battle's sides. Their layout in the space allows them to view all troop movement in their own territory. In the same way, through several museographic devices of interpretation and reading, the visitor will be able to recreate and understand this historical event. Those devices are located from ground level to the platforms in order to create a general view for the battle as well as a political context and war period. The building project is part of a larger path which try to give value to the crossing of the Andes by the "Libertador" army and rescue the intangible heritage of the Independence's battle. Chicago’s New Apple Store Installs Giant MacBook Roof Posted: 01 Jul 2017 01:00 AM PDT Taking a page from its own products, Chicago's new flagship Apple Store will have what appears to be a MacBook-inspired roof topping its entrance. Videos from the Chicago Tribune and Twitter surfaced earlier last week detailing its roof installation complete with a white apple logo. The Foster + Partners design will offer unobstructed views towards the Chicago river as a tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie-style homes outside the city.
The 20,000 square-foot Chicago store is broken down into a glass entrance pavilion with a grand staircase descending into lower levels, reminiscent of its patented 5th Avenue design. In order to be as thin as possible, the roof is made from a lightweight fibre-reinforced polymer (used in yacht construction) with a white oak interior. Partner James McGrath from Foster + Partners details the project's construction in a video from the Chicago Tribune below: News via: The Chicago Tribune.

Fulham Pavilion / Silver & Co. Posted: 30 Jun 2017 10:00 PM PDT
From the architect. Silver & Co has designed and converted a derelict shed into a flexible multi-functional art studio for an artist couple and their child at the bottom of a west London garden. The studio has been designed to meet the sculptor and painter's needs that include work, hobby, play and storage. It also needs to be turned into a gallery or guest room when needed. With these in mind, the studio has to be as flexible, open and airy as possible. Under the timber flooring hides a sunken bed that is accessible by lifting a section of the floor mechanically. The birch plywood wall panels on both sides of the kitchenette slide open to reveal an artist's wash-up sink and a shower room. Hidden within a full height storage cupboard stands a folded table-tennis table, where another of the clients' passion has been included. Folding desk has been incorporated to allow for a bigger space when it is not being used. The light-filled space with opening skylights, windows and glazed sliding doors leads onto a heated veranda where the family gets to appreciate their garden and enjoy outdoor dining whenever possible. The location of the studio benefits from direct sunlight and timber louvered canopy and automatic roller mesh blind have been introduced to ensure that the studio and veranda get ample shading and not overheated on sunny days. Anthracite zinc and Accoya wood cladding, concealing an insulated steel and timber structure, have been chosen for their durability and stability and they compliment with the existing brick back wall.
