23 Spots You Shouldn’t Miss in Zürich If You Love Architecture Posted: 26 Apr 2019 09:30 PM PDT The historical Roman town has been busy at work and new exciting buildings, squares, and public parks have bloomed across the city. Since my first trip to Zürich in 2014, a lot has happened around good old Turicum. After a compelling trip organized by Visit Zürich and my friend Philipp Heer, we were able to visit some of the newest, most interesting and uplifting places of the city. Flitting hither and thither, Roc Isern, David Basulto and I enjoyed the privilege of a tailored itinerary, access to Zürich's gems and perhaps the most inspiring, the architects behind these amazing structures. Posted: 26 Apr 2019 06:00 AM PDT Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei (born April 26, 1917), is arguably the greatest living member of the modernist generation of architects. When he received his Pritzker Prize in 1983, the jury citation stated that he "has given this century some of its most beautiful interior spaces and exterior forms." Woods Bagot Designs Sawtooth Technology Hub for Victoria University in Melbourne Posted: 26 Apr 2019 05:00 AM PDT Woods Bagot has designed a new technology building and campus hub for Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia. Located in the suburb of Sunshine, the project was made for Technical and Further Education (TAFE) courses to foster a transition from a manufacturing economy. Dubbed the Sunshine Skills Hub, the project provides space for education and training alongside the university's Construction Futures trade training center. The center will provide training in health technologies, advanced manufacturing and construction. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Studio Gang's Twisting MIRA Tower Tops Out in San Francisco Posted: 26 Apr 2019 04:00 AM PDT Studio Gang is celebrating a significant milestone with the topping out of their twisting high-rise MIRA tower in San Francisco. Construction of the 400-foot-tall tower began in mid-2017, with steady progression leading to projected occupancy in late 2019. The scheme's design is centered on the evolution of the bay window element, a feature common to San Francisco's early houses. The bay window is reimagined in a high-rise context, twisting across the full height of the tower to offer views across the city. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Posted: 26 Apr 2019 12:00 AM PDT Although ancient buildings carry compelling architectural presence, demolition or radical change is often their fate. While some architects prefer to introduce thoroughly new structures, others choose to honor the works of historic architects, who built the basis and foundations of structures that helped shape up cities today. For the refurbishment of Paris' Hotel Fouquet Barrière, located one block facing Avenue des Champs Elysées, Edouard François was selected to renovate the entire property, including offices, spa services, façade, and courtyards. François' design strategy was rather unambiguous, using only two keywords as reference: "COPY-EDIT"; a reinterpretation of the "old" through contemporary technologies and modified material. Posted: 25 Apr 2019 11:30 PM PDT Known for his sensuous materiality and attention to place, 2009 Pritzker Laureate Peter Zumthor (born April 26, 1943) is one the most revered architects of the 21st century. Shooting to fame on the back of The Therme Vals and Kunsthaus Bregenz, completed just a year apart in 1996 and 1997, his work privileges the experiential qualities of individual buildings over the technological, cultural and theoretical focus often favored by his contemporaries. Posted: 25 Apr 2019 10:15 PM PDT Amidst efforts to revitalize and improve urban centers, the peripheral areas of cities are often ignored or forgotten. The intense focus on the downtown core means, in terms of land use, that only a relatively small area receives the majority of designers' attention. "Dvorulitsa" (literally "Yardstreet" in Russian) is an urban development strategy proposed by Russian architecture firm Meganom, aiming to shift that focus. Taking the idea of the "superpark" from the 2013 study, "Archaeology of the Periphery," the yardstreet project presents an alternative method of viewing the periphery of a post-soviet city.
