Scientists have recreated a period — and it's a big deal for women's health

For decades, science maintained an awkward relationship with women as research subjects. Basically, scientists ignored them for logistical and cultural reasons, hoping that studies involving men and male animals would apply to women as well.

Here's the not-so-surprising twist: That's actually not how biology works. Sex and gender matter a lot when you're testing a new drug, trying to identify a disease's risk factors or hunting for a cure. This gender blind spot has put women's health at a big disadvantage, but a study published this week in Nature Communications could dramatically change that.  Read more...

Police drones with lethal weapons are one step closer to reality

From the department of Things That Would  Make A Terrifying Black Mirror Episode: Connecticut lawmakers want police to be able to arm their drones with lethal weapons.

This would be a United States first. Connecticut lawmakers have introduced a bill that basically lets police, and nobody else, shoot bullets from drones so long as they follow certain rules that are TBD. The guidelines would reportedly be developed by Connecticut's Police Officer Standards and Training Council.

While Connecticut makes moves to let police weaponize drones, other states such as Virginia and Maine have banned the practiceNorth Dakota allows police drones to use "less lethal" weapons such as stun guns. Read more...

With promposal season in full swing, the teens are outdoing themselves left and right. But while most kids are staying Earth-bound for their over-the-top proposals, this teen literally jumped out of a plane for his potential prom date.

Set to Ellie Goulding's "Falling For You," the clip shows Ty Myers hopping out of a plane with a sign in hand that reads, "I'm Falling 4 u, PROM?"

How Myers plans to top himself for all future proposals remains unclear.

Bed Bath & Beyond is the latest chain to dump Trump

Bed Bath & Beyond is the latest retailer to clear the Trump name from its shelves.

The homeware chain said Friday it no longer carries the first family's product lines. The news first emerged in an email from a customer service rep posted on Twitter by #GrabYourWallet boycott leader Shannon Coulter, who has helped lead the charge to stop businesses from supporting the Trump brand.

The company didn't immediately respond to our request for comment.

This is a big one: @BedBathBeyond now confirming to customers it's no longer carrying Trump products. Just removed it from boycott list. + pic.twitter.com/OXxagLkZtN

Your internet privacy is gone and more sad news in podcast form

If you're reading this, I'm sorry — your internet provider now knows you're a fan of Mashable and they could sell that information. Please don't blame us.

This week, the U.S. government ripped apart the rules former Federal Communications Communications Chairman Tom Wheeler put in place to protect your privacy while browsing the web. Kendrick Lamar's lyrics about photoshop and stretch marks are sparking a lot of feelings

Kendrick Lamar snuck up on the world yet again, dropping a music video for new single "Humble" Thursday.

If the 4 million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours is any indication, the majority of people seemed to lap up new work from the Compton rapper.

But, like most things, there is room to appreciate and critique an artist at the same time—which is exactly what people on Twitter have been doing.

"I’m so fuckin’ sick and tired of the Photoshop / Show me somethin’ natural like afro on Richard Pryor / Show me somethin’ natural like ass with some stretch marks / Still will take you down right on your mama’s couch in Polo socks," Lamar raps on "Humble," all while a women appears on a split screen—half of her in flawless makeup with straight hair, and the other half with no makeup and curly hair.  Read more...

The software that could prevent ISPs from selling your browsing history could also just make things worse

Pour another one out for online privacy. Then do a half-assed job of mopping it back up with a virtual private network.

In what is only the latest assault on the right not to be creeped on, both the House and the Senate voted to permit internet service providers to sell customers' browsing history to the highest bidder — all without the customers' knowledge. In response to this, virtual private network (VPNs) have become the talk of the digital town.

VPNs work by encrypting your traffic and running it through a third party server. That way, anyone snooping on your web browsing would theoretically just see an encrypted connection to your VPN provider — not mashable.com, not plannedparenthood.org, and definitely not PornhubRead more...

The end of March is hell as we sift through each morsel of content to determine what is real and what is a marketing stunt. Looking at you, April the giraffe.

Qatar Airways launches smart workaround for electronics ban

Electronics ban be damned, Qatar Airways is going to get its hard-working business travelers typing away on laptops no matter what.

Less than a week after U.S. officials banned electronics larger than a smartphone on certain U.S.-bound flights from certain Middle East and Africa airports, the Doha-based airliner figured out how to get out of the snarly mess that is the ban.

The airline is offering loaner laptops since in-flight entertainment systems just don't cut it for people traveling for work. Writing up reports or endless work emails on a smartphone is headache — sometimes you just need the real thing. That performance report isn't going to write itself during your 15-hour flight.  Read more...

What happened to our 'Grimm' favorites after the series finale?

Spoiler warning: This interview contains plot details for the series finale of Grimm.

After six seasons and 123 episodes, Grimm came to a close Friday night. As a fan throughout the show's run, I was sad to see it go, especially since so many other genre shows are wrapping up this season (The Vampire Diaries, Bates Motel, Teen Wolf). But Grimm is going out at the top of its game. The last two seasons have been stellar, with a good mix of standalone stories and mythology episodes.

For the uninitiated, Grimm follows Nick Burkhardt, a Portland homicide detective. He discovers he is a Grimm, one of a long line of hunters who fights supernatural creatures, known as Wesen, that are eerily reminiscent of fairy tale creatures. But let's be honest: if you’re reading this, you’re familiar with the show. So let's talk about that series finale.  Read more...

TechCrunch first reported the news on Friday.

We don't need April Fools' Day anymore because we're living a fake news nightmare

I remember the halcyon days when April Fools' Day was a bit of harmless fun. We'd read fake stories from the newspaper over our cornflakes and have a good chuckle. Fake news was just something that happened once a year. But, those days are gone

We are now living in the age of fake news; where mistruths are presented as truths, and believed at face value. Fake news is no longer a once-yearly event, it's a 365-day-a-year news cycle. And, that's why April Fools' Day needs to die.

"April's Fool Day is a day when you have to constantly engage the critical and sceptical part of the brain so you don't get duped," says Claire Wardle, Director of Research and Strategy of First Draft News. "Now that we are increasingly encountering information that has been fabricated, manipulated or is downright misleading, we need to be engaging those same parts of our brains every day and questioning what we're seeing in our social feeds." 5 pages from 'The Art of the Deal' that explain exactly what Trump's doing

President Trump has called his 1987 book, The Art of The Deal, the best selling business book of all time. Unsurprisingly, that is not true.

What is true, however, is that the book (that POTUS did not himself write) could give readers a better idea of how Trump thinks and where his ideas come from.

As it so happens, we recently took a look through the book and did in fact discover some things that explain why Trump is doing what he's doing.

These incredibly real pages will blow you away, make you question your judgment, and have you asking, "Wait, so he wanted to be bad at this?" Read more...

Never gonna give you up: The surprising resilience of the Rickroll, 10 years later

Against all odds, the Rickroll still hasn't turned around and deserted us.

The prank meme, ancient by internet standards, has had plenty of reasons to say goodbye, of course: the internet's short attention span, YouTube autoplay ads that ruin the surprise, and a live performance at the 2008 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, to name a few. But it hasn't. Armed with that sweet, sweet drum opening and a relentlessly catchy (let's be real) chorus, it remains the meme that keeps on meme-ing.

Rick Astley's 1987 chart-topper "Never Gonna Give You Up" is so ingrained in our collective consciousness that when Melania Trump uttered the words "He will never, ever give up," at the 2016 Republican National Convention, thousands of brains thought instantly of the Rickroll — a meme that debuted nearly a decade ago. April Fools' Day pranks to play on your gullible kids

April Fools' day as an adult (or like, semi-adult) can be a real drag: you've seen it all. You've seen the thumbtack on the chair, and the stapler in the Jell-o.

You know who hasn't seen it all? Kids. Babies. Children. Innocent li'l kids who have no idea what fiendish delights are out there, waiting to at first embarrass them, but then make them laugh a little bit, hopefully.

When making sure the kids in your life have a healthy and responsible appreciation for pranks, it's kinda hard to know where to start. You want to establish that a prank is not, in fact, bullying. Or, like I thought in 4th grade, just pretending that you have a sprained wrist for the day. You may come off like an Embarrassing Old, but at least you're teaching them to prank at all. 'Planet Earth II' is the best 4K Blu-Ray ever made

4K Blu-Ray disks are what you go for if you absolutely have to have the best TV experience available on the market right now. This new format offers 2,160 lines of resolution, which is double what you get in regular Blu Ray HD. It can also support the more lifelike 60 frames per second.

Sorry, streaming services: For crispness, color and clarity, and for the Dolby Atmos sound, 4K disks will beat the already-impressive 4K content on Netflix every time.

But like all new entertainment tech, 4K Blu Ray suffers a chicken-and-egg problem. It's expensive and the price will only come down when more people buy it (plus the necessary 4K TVs), which will only happen when there's something worth buying that was shot especially for the format, which will only happen when more people are able to play it.  Read more...

1937: Alabama farmers find community in a good old-fashioned square dance

Image: Library of Congress

In the 1930s, the federal government established dozens of experimental cooperative farm settlements across the United States in an effort to provide relief and employment to farmers displaced by the Great Depression.

One of these was Skyline Farms, located on 13,000 acres in Jackson County, Alabama. The settlement was divided into 181 farms, with government-supplied housing and farming equipment to help the tenants work the land.

Like much of the Jim Crow South, the project was only open to white families, though a similar cooperative settlement was created for black families in Wilcox County. Read more...
