Neil deGrasse Tyson isn't riding SpaceX to Mars until Elon Musk answers this challenge

Neil deGrasse Tyson, the ever-witty astrophysicist who delivers the truth about space and science to the masses, held a Reddit AMA on Sunday, and it included a playful challenge to SpaceX founder Elon Musk

When asked about SpaceX's recent Falcon 9 mission and whether he'd ever consider making a trip to Mars via SpaceX, Tyson kept it far realer than many might have expected.

"I really like Earth. So any space trip I take, I'm double checking that there's sufficient funds for me to return," said Tyson.

But then came the zinger, "Also, I'm not taking that trip until Elon Musk send[s] his Mother and brings her back alive. Then I'm good for it." Read more...

Try not to cry looking at this sad baby monkey hugging a teddy bear

Sometimes, you just need to hug a teddy bear when you have a rough day.

This baby monkey named Mongkood knows just what that's like.

According to a Facebook post from the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand,  Mongkood (which means 'crown') is a two-month-old Northern pig-tailed macaque, a species classified "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species list. Just last week, he was rescued from being poached — but not before he witnessed the killing of his mother.

We know — this sounds just like a heartbreaking Disney film, IRL. Read more...

The only fictional character in 'Feud' is also the most painfully real

She’s the one Feud: Bette and Joan character who’s largely fictitious – but what she represents is truthful today as it was in the 1960s.

Pauline Jameson – the capable assistant to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? director Robert Aldrich who harbors ambitions to become a screenwriter and filmmaker herself – is not to be confused with a British actress whose career was in full flourish around the same time as the series was set: they share only a name.

But as actress Alison Wright (The Americans, Sneaky Pete) reveals to Mashable, the character — a composite of many smart, creative women working in Hollywood at the time — represents an untold number of ladies hoping to shatter its many glass ceilings. Pauline herself may not be real, but the creative struggles depicted in her story were – and in many ways still are – as genuine as it gets. Read more...

EPA chief is tongue-tied when asked about his climate change denial

America's top environmental official was in the hot seat on Sunday over his dubious views on climate change.

But Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt wasn't a guest on CNN or MSNBC, stations that President Donald Trump might accuse of being "fake news."

Instead, Pruitt was treading on what should've been more favorable turf: Fox News.

The EPA administrator was on Fox News Sunday to discuss the Trump administration's executive order to unravel the Obama administration's climate policies, including the EPA's Clean Power Plan to limit carbon emissions from electricity. Read more...

'Rogue One' retold with Lego is amazing, but skips all the grim parts

The success of the Lego movies proves that we're eager to see our favorite films retold in toy form. That's why a new Lego short replaying the plot of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a welcome surprise this weekend.

But despite the video's attention to detail, some hardcore fans noticed that this Lego version of the film left out all the grim (spoiler alert!) deaths that litter the human-populated version of the film.

Instead, the short Lego version of Rogue One ends with our two heroes securing the Death Star plans — and everyone is happy (and alive). The. End.

It's an ending more in line with Disney's approach to kids, a choice some parents might appreciate. However, the soft touch, deathless ending underscores some of the awkward fits between Disney and its darker franchises when it comes to staying true to a franchise's fan base and not veering too far from the kid-friendly territory Disney is known for.  Read more...

MashReads Podcast: 'A Separation' is a grief novel disguised as a mystery thriller

Katie Kitamura has a theory about grief:

"Part of being around people who are in grief is that even when it's completely sincere, it's still a performance. It's very hard when you are grieving to not be aware of how your grief is going to be interpreted when other people are around"

It's an astute observation and one that animates her latest novel A Separation.

A Separation follows an unnamed narrator, only recently separated from her husband, Chris, who gets a phone call from her mother-in-law that Chris has gone missing in Greece and that our narrator must track him down. The real mystery of the book is not where has Chris disappeared to and why, but whether the narrator should even be searching for him in the first place.  Read more...

'The Walking Dead' finale brings 'All Out War' but only one major death

This recap contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 7 finale, titled "The First Day of the Rest of Your Life."

Looks like the fan theories about Sasha's death were correct — she popped Eugene's suicide pill on the way to Alexandria, and burst out of Negan's painfully on-the-nose casket as a walker.

It's admirable that she attempted to complete her mission to kill Negan the only way she knew how, with the one weapon made available to her, but sadly it still wasn't enough to overpower the bat-loving villain — who's likely to be with us at least through the first half of Season 8, if not longer. Some Facebook users are seeing a rocket icon in their app. Here's what it does

In recent weeks, some users have started noticing a rocket-shaped icon in their Facebook mobile app.

The icon, positioned right next to the main news feed icon, gives you a different type of news feed, one which displays popular posts from people and pages that you haven't befriended or liked.

I've had the new feature on my Android phone for at least three weeks now, though it tends to disappear and reappear every now and then. (I’m based in Croatia, but there are also reports of users seeing the new icon in the UK.)

The rocket feed offers a great deal of local content, so it's possible that it's showing posts that are popular near my geographical location. However, I'm also seeing some posts that are relevant to my interests, so it might not be completely disassociated from my likes/friends.  Read more...

These kids wrote a film script and OMG the horror

We tend to think of children as pure, innocent creatures, but deep down we know they nurture a hilariously dark imagination.

That is particularly apparent when we encourage them to produce works of art, be it a scribbled paper or a simple script.

The latter happened to the Scottish novelist John Niven, whose kids — aged 10 and 8 — wrote a screenplay while on holiday. And it is nothing short of a noir/horror/action masterpiece:

A square that's home to 11 statues of men and no statues of women is about to get a big change

A suffragette who dedicated her life to getting women the vote is to become the first woman honoured with a statue in London's Parliament Square, the UK's political centre.

The statue of suffragist Millicent Fawcett — one of the leading figures in the campaign for women's voting rights in the UK — will stand alongside statues of Sir Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela outside the Houses of Parliament. All 11 statues in the square are currently of men, making Fawcett the first woman to be honoured in this way.

Fawcett led the peaceful campaign for women's suffrage for 62 years, during which suffragettes fought for voting rights to be extended to women. February 2018 will mark 100 years since the Representation of the People Act 1918 was passed, which granted women over the age of 30 in the UK the right to vote. Full equality at the ballot box wasn't achieved until a decade later, one year before Fawcett’s death. Indian IT professionals face new challenges as Singapore shuts door

India’s IT professionals are going through tough times.

Amid layoffs and poor appraisals, they're facing a new trouble: overseas doors are quickly closing.

Singapore has slowed down on issuing new visas to Indian professionals, reports Times of India. The move is apparently an attempt by the Singapore government to foster the hiring of local talent.

This also enforces new challenges to major software firms including Infosys, TCS, and Wipro, in India, who have offices in Singapore.

"This (visa problem) has been lingering for a while but since early-2016, visas are down to a trickle. All Indian companies have received communication on fair consideration, which basically means hiring local people," Nasscom president R Chandrashekhar told the paper.  Read more...

You might be able to control HTC's next phone by squeezing it

Phones are about to get exciting again.

Underdog phone maker HTC is reportedly planning to release a new flagship phone (possibly called the HTC U or HTC Ocean) with sensors built into its edges that'll perform different tasks depending on how long you squeeze it, according to a detailed leak from Android Headlines.

If the leaked details are accurate, you'll be able to squeeze HTC's upcoming phone to perform actions like launching the camera or Google Assistant, or even toggling settings like the Wi-Fi hotspot. The new squeeze tech is apparently an attempt to improve one-handed use.  Read more...

Marvel VP clarifies disheartening diversity statements

Being a comic book fan in 2017 is an emotional rollercoaster. Your favorite properties keep getting repackaged and rebooted for television and film, and sometimes your favorite hero turns out to be a Nazi

On the page, though, Marvel was making strides, with heroes diverse in gender, race and sexuality. But according to the company's VP of sales, David Gabriel, those rare and valued qualities don't fly in sales.

"What we heard was that people didn't want any more diversity," Gabriel told ICv2 regarding the company's 2016 sales at the Marvel Retail Summit. "They didn't want female characters out there. That's what we heard, whether we believe that or not. I don't know that that's really true, but that's what we saw in sales." Read more...

Mark Hamill is narrating a Hulu show all about internet horrors

"I’m sorry viewer, the TV show you’re searching for cannot be streamed in your reality. Please stand by for reconnection."

Those are the opening lines of Hulu's new show Dimension 404, a show that explores "the wonders and horrors of our digital age" in six one-hour episodes.

If that makes you think of Black Mirror, you're not alone. But Dimension 404, which debuts on April 4, is not as similar to the BBC series (which Netflix distributes in the U.S.) as you might think.

"When we started developing this show, Black Mirror emerged on BBC as an original ... we absolutely loved it,"  Desmond Dolly, Dimension 404's co-creator, said. "But we were also completely relieved that it was so dark and nihilistic because we realized, ok, this is fine and good — but thankfully it’s its own thing." Read more...

Blind 'Street Fighter' player wins his first tournament match

Sven is a Street Fighter V player who made his official tournament debut this weekend, grabbing two wins in the group stage of Sonic Boom IV in Madrid. Sven is also blind.

Sven defeated his first-ever on-stream opponent Musashi at Sonic Boom IV despite not being able to see. Playing as Ken, Sven listened for the sounds of Musashi's Akuma and responded with well-placed blocks and some impressive counters, eventually winning the set in a very close 2-0 victory.

In a post-match interview with one of the commentators of his match, Damascus, Sven said he developed cancer and became blind at the age of six. He was afraid he wasn't going to be able to play video games anymore without his sight, but then Capcom released Street Fighter II for the Super Nintendo and he found out he could play by listening for audio cues. Since then, he's played a bunch of fighting games including Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat, and most of the Street Fighter games. Read more...

Dedicated mailman tries to be helpful, accidentally drops package in the worst place ever

You've gotta give it a little bit for a mailman who at least tries to get you your package on time, even if he destroys the whole thing in the process.

Take, for example, this incredibly dedicated mailman, who recently decided to push Sam Cooke's package through his apartment's window in Manchester, United Kingdom. Sadly, he didn't exactly look out below.

It's not like he just rang the doorbell once and ran away. He put effort into this:

However, all that diligence ended up in the literal toilet.

6 video game releases in April that you should watch out for

After three months of almost non-stop hits, April feels like a breather for video games. That's not to say there aren't great games to play, but now their arrival won't be drowned out by the news around marquee titles like Mass Effect or Zelda.

This cartoon perfectly sums up the agonizing debate of grammar nerds

When couples take marriage vows, they promise to stand by each other for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do them part—but they don't generally promise to stand by each other through differing views on grammar.

However, as all English majors know, grammar debates can get ugly. A recent cartoon by The New Yorker's Emily Flake perfectly captures how one of the most agonizing debates between grammar nerds might even manage to get in the way of a marriage.

It looks like the Undertaker has wrestled his last match, and we're having all the feels

When the WWE universe woke up Monday morning still groggy after a terrific (if long) WrestleMania 33 on Sunday night, there was more than a hint of sadness.

After the fireworks went off and Reigns departed as victor, Taker's music played. The Dead Man rose one last time, and, in a stunning move, took off his gloves, coat, and hat, leaving them in the center of the ring while his ominous theme played and tens of thousands of fans gave one of pro wrestling's greatest performers his due.  Read more...

Oops, that vibrator with a camera is super easy to hack

Do you want the entire world to get a very up close and personal view of your cervix? Then you might want to throw that IoT sex toy away.

Security experts have figured it is woefully easy to hack your way into Svakom's Siime Eye, an internet-connected vibrator. The device features a small camera at the tip, which can allow you to share your pleasure online. All well and good if you’re sure only those with your permission can see it, but that’s decidedly not the case.

As Vice reported, security consultant at Pen Test Partners figured out that if you’re within the dildo’s wifi range and you can figure out the password you can see the video stream. That’s particularly easy because the default password for the device is “88888888.”  Read more...

Your internet data is absolutely a national security issue

With last week’s privacy vote, hackers now know where to learn a Senator’s darkest secrets or how to uncover U.S. military personnel travel plans, among other things.

Let’s say a three-star general and career intelligence officer books a trip online from Dulles to O’Hare for a 3-day conference. She scans her inbox and spots an email with the subject line: “Review the itinerary for your upcoming trip to Chicago!” After skimming the body of the email, she double-clicks the attached PDF, at which point sophisticated malware developed by a U.S. adversary’s intelligence organization imbeds itself and begins silently transmitting every file stored on the hard drive to a clandestine server, activating a system that monitors her future web and email activities, plus, for good measure, every keystroke she types. ‘Ghost Recon: Wildlands’ trades up tactical shooting for a Bolivian bro-down

Ghost Recon: Wildlands isn’t just an open world game — it’s a daunting expanse of unrealized potential.

At first blush, Ghost Recon: Wildlands is a mesmerizing experience. The rocky hills in Itacua, the first province in the game, create a beautiful, treacherous landscape that is glorious to behold. But Wildlands quickly reveals itself as a husk, devoid of any life or meaningful story, with more veneer than actual substance.

A good start to the story breaks bad quickly

Wildlands’ narrative starts off compellingly enough. You play as a Ghost Recon operator, call-sign Nomad, in the wild lands of Bolivia, under the CIA’s Operation Kingslayer. Your mission is to clear out the Santa Blanca cartel and rid Bolivia of its narco-state ties. But it isn’t long before you discover the myriad flaws and plotholes that run rampant throughout the game’s latter half.  Read more...

LGBTQ community responds perfectly after being accused of stealing God's rainbow

Who knew that God could be a victim of cultural appropriation?

Bryan Fischer, a conservative radio host for the American Family Network, made exactly that claim when he tweeted on Sunday that the LBGTQ community had mercilessly appropriated the rainbow symbol from the higher being.

So the community fought back the best way they knew how.

Pink just dropped some words of wisdom about body positivity on Instagram

Mattress flies off a truck, causes accident and also saves the day

When you're hauling a bunch of stuff, always make sure your load is secure, even if it's a squishy mattress.

Motorcyclist Aaron Wood was riding his bike through the Clem 7 tunnel in Brisbane, Australia last week when a mattress flew off the back of a truck directly into his lane. Unable to avoid the mattress, Wood hit it with his bike, but fortunately, it was a mattress.

The squishy landing pad became lodged in his front tire, causing the bike to slow down rapidly. Fortunately, he was not rear ended, and was able to walk away from the wreck without serious injury.

"I was just very lucky to come out unscathed — apart from some cuts to my hands," Wood told the Queensland Times. Read more...
