Elon Musk seems serious about creating a boring company to solve traffic
Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has a pretty good sense of humor, but sometimes we can't tell when he's just joking or mulling his next big idea. For example, on Saturday Musk took to Twitter to say out loud what every traffic-plagued Los Angeles resident is silently screaming inside: The city is a gridlocked hellscape. "Traffic is driving me nuts," wrote Musk. But he didn't stop there. He also raised the idea of boring through obstacles to alleviate traffic woes.
Company behind the EpiPen is caught up in another drug price scandal
You'd think one scandal would be enough. Mylan, the company that came under fire this summer for systematically raising the price of the EpiPen, is caught up in another drug price scheme. The pharmaceutical player is one of six companies accused of inflating prices of a diabetes drug and an antibiotic, according to the New York Times. The complaint centers on generic, rather than brand-name, drugs. A civil complaint filed by 20 states claims that the drug companies coordinated a price-fixing scheme through personal phone calls and texts as well as "informal industry gatherings," the Times said. There’s an old, schlocky TV writers’ term called the “Hey, Myrna.” It means they’ve concocted a scene specifically to make some boob tube aficionado in his stained undershirt stand up from his Lay-Z-Boy, kick over his TV dinner tray and scream to his wife, “Hey, Myrna get in here … the hot redhead just took off her necklace.” Shameless is the champion of the “Hey, Myrnas.” The first time I “Hey, Myrna’ed” about Shameless to my husband (whose name is Alex, for what it’s worth, but Myrna is a much more fun name) was while watching the Showtime dramedy’s first season. It was because of what the show did with what could otherwise have been a rather benign scene about a child protection service worker who pays a visit to Kevin (Steve Howey) and Veronica (Shanola Hampton), the best friends and neighbors of main character Fiona Gallagher (Emmy Rossum) and her plethora of siblings. The setup of the scene seems familiar, and clearly destined to play out familiar narrative beats – until the social worker opens her mouth. Read more... More about Showtime, William H. Here's how the White House staff pranked President Obama for the holidays
In the final days of President Barack Obama's presidency, his staffers had a bit of fun with the official White House holiday decorations. On Friday, White House Photographer Pete Souza shared a staffer's attempt to prank Obama with a set of decorative snowmen currently on display in the Rose Garden. "We've been joking that we should move the snowmen a few feet closer to the Oval Office every day to see if anyone noticed," Souza shared on Instagram. "Then we realized the snowmen were too heavy to easily lift. But finally this morning before the President came to the office, some helpful staff—I won't say who—moved all the snowmen so each one was peeking through a different window into the Oval." Depending on the policies they enact, these individuals could have dire consequences for the planet.
