Send off 2016 with HBO's 'Game of Thrones' marathon
There may be no better way to bid a hearty farewell to this year than to utterly shelter oneself from external stimuli for five days — and instead, spend that time bingeing Game of Thrones on HBO live. From Dec. 26 to Dec. 31, HBO (technically HBO2) will air the entirety of its Emmy-winning fantasy juggernaut, so if you've avoided the show thus far or just feel like reliving the Red Wedding, this is a foolproof chance to do it. If you feel like a real challenge, tune in at random with a viewing partner who hasn't seen the show and see if you can explain all that wiley Westerosi madness. Read more... Holy sh*t, where's the Tylenol? Eric Anstey, in Lower Sackville, Canada, might need it after standing in the pouring rain for 15 minutes recreating a classic scene from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. As part of his "12 Dares of Christmas," Anstey did a perfect impression of Cousin Eddie's infamous "sh*tter's full" segment, screaming the phrase at cars passing by. Even though he's under a month from taking the oath of office, it's highly unlikely Donald Trump is going to be ditching his Twitter account any time soon, which means we're going to see a lot more of his Twitter tics, including the one he abuses the most: the exclamation point. We already know that there are a lot of things that make Trump "sad!" and that he thinks a lot of things are "bad" or "terrible." And we have multiple archives to tell us who he's insulted. But Trump's exclamation point abuse is like your aunt who uses Comic Sans in her emails. According to the Trump Twitter Archive, Trump has posted 2,251 tweets using an exclamation point in 2016 alone. Of the 355 days from Jan. 1, 2016 through Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016, there have been only 12 days on which Trump has not used an exclamation point in a tweet. Sad! Read more... So apparently Manny Ramirez wants to play baseball again. We all remember Manny, right? He was a stud for the Boston Red Sox during their World Series runs in 2004 and 2007. This type of quirky, DGAF behavior sparked the phrase "Manny being Manny," which is exactly how you could describe his latest comeback attempt. Ramirez, now 44, hasn't seen major league action since 2011. Ten blind people in the UK are set to be given "bionic eyes" for free by the National Health Service (NHS) as part of a pioneering treatment program. The Argus II Bionic Eye, made by the company Second Sight, could mean a whole new world of vision for people previously blind through an inherited degenerative disease called retinitis pigmentosa — and potentially pave the way for the technology to enter the mainstream. The eyes are essentially retinal implants which translate images from a tiny video camera within a pair of eyeglasses worn by the patient into electrical pulses and eventually signals that reach the brain. Irony alert: Mondelez picks Singapore as its chewing gum 'center of excellence'
American candy giant Mondelez has decided to set up a Centre of Excellence for Gum and Candy in Singapore. The S$10 million ($6.9 million) facility will focus on researching taste, ingredients and recipes, and packaging options for gum. Mondelez, which already has its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore, will open the R&D centre in late-2017 in the island state, CNBC reports. It's hard to miss the irony in this, given that Singapore famously banned the sale of gum in 1992. You can chew gum here, by the way — the restriction is on distributing it. In 2004, the rules got relaxed somewhat to allow "therapeutic" gum with dental benefits, or for smokers, to be sold. But that can only be carried by dentists or pharmacies, which have to register the buyer's details. Read more... Fear is an essential part of the human condition that’s deeply rooted in our most primal instincts. For most of the hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution, this was a very good thing: It was necessary for our very survival. In most parts of today’s modern world, however, we’re no longer subject to the bulk of the dangers these instincts originally developed to protect us from. This means that fear often manifests itself in unexpected or just plain bizarre ways, such as a fear of rejection or a fear of learning a new skill.
