Tokata Iron Eyes is beaming. Surrounded by journalists, camera crews and activists, the 13-year-old water protector—what she and other demonstrators call themselves—stands in the snow at a camp near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota, wearing a heavy gray coat, a large knitted scarf and thick burgundy mittens. Just minutes earlier, she and the rest of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe learned that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers won't grant an easement that would have allowed construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) to cross under Lake Oahe on the Missouri River. For months, Native American activists and allies have argued that the 1,172-mile, $3.8 billion pipeline project would pollute the region's water supplies and desecrate sacred sites. Read more... For the second year in a row, Johnny Depp's films can barely justify his paycheck. We know that famous actors can make tens of millions of dollars for their work, but the understanding of those who pay them is that the movies will earn it back — in a big way. That wasn't the case for Depp, the year's most overpaid actor according to Forbes; Depp's films made $2.80 for every dollar he was paid. He and other big-name stars had films' fates riding on their bankability and didn't always deliver to the extent producers wanted, though, to be fair, Depp's movies are bringing in more than he makes. Why the 'SuperMansion' Christmas special makes Keegan-Michael Key feel 'a little naughty'
SuperMansion's Christmas special is in no way your classic holiday tale. Maria is from Sicily while Elisabetta is from near Rome. They're not related but share an uncanny resemblance — they're doppelgängers. But while there are thousands of doppelgängers out there, there is something very peculiar about Maria and Elisabetta: they're BFFs and live together! They met during the first year of university in Pisa, while staying at the same boarding school, and never separated. Since 2012, they have shared an apartment together just five minutes from the leaning tower. "It's very fun to have a twin stranger," Elisabetta said (or was it Maria?!). "We have a lot of fun stories." Read more... More about Twin, Italy, Bff, Friends, and Doppelgangers Read More »Cavaliers were so bored in their blowout win, they started flipping bottles
Winning can be such a bore sometimes, especially when you're winning by ... a lot. Just ask the Cleveland Cavaliers, who destroyed the New York Knicks in Wednesday night's game at Madison Square Garden by more than 30 points, with a final score of 126-94. While grabbing some rest on the bench in the fourth quarter, LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and a few of their Cavs teammates were so bored they sought out alternate means of entertainment — flipping water bottles. The challenge is simple: flip a water bottle up into the air and have it land upright. Read more... Ryan Gosling says he "empties out [his] brain" after every movie he films, so he doesn't remember much of the fancy footwork he learned for La La Land. But he does remember the waltz—and he gave Jimmy Kimmel an impromptu lesson. Gosling really extolls the value of eye contact here, which delights 100% of the studio audience. "The world melts away," he says. "It's just you and I." Aw. Beautiful. The next frontier in the fight against extremists online
When you send a tweet, post a Facebook status, upload a video to YouTube, or do anything on the internet, there's always a chance that little act will ripple out onto other social media platforms, taking on a life beyond your control. Extremist content — whether that's Twitter accounts spreading Islamic State or white supremacist propaganda, beheading videos posted to YouTube (which is owned by Google), or Facebook posts filled with hate speech — is no different, which is why Facebook, Twitter, Google and Microsoft are putting together a database of "terrorist content" to better track and eliminate it. In the Shakespearean ideal of dramatic structure, we have tragedy and comedy. And while everyone loves a good rom-com, movies with tragic heroes tend to get remembered past the box office. Now that you’ve mastered the Warp Strike, a brilliant attack in FINAL FANTASY XV where players simply point their sword at the intended target and hurl themselves through the air, it’s easy to imagine how cinematic greats such as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings could have turned out differently with the addition of the move. For your entertainment, we did just that: Here’s how the world of film could have been so, so different had leading protagonists been able to Warp Strike their way out of sticky situations. Stop me if you've heard this one: Facebook is adding a feature that looks like it was lifted straight from Snapchat. Facebook "location frames" are its answer to Snapchat's geofilters. But don't expect them to appear in your Facebook app before Christmas — they're coming to the experimental in-app camera Facebook is testing in Ireland. SEE ALSO: The 16 biggest tech stories of 2016 A quick refresher: For the last several weeks, Facebook has been testing a so-far unnamed camera experience in its main app in Ireland. Star Wars fans, take note: This Russian guy finally found a way to integrate the classic movie's music into a morning routine. Deita Meira, a true lover of the galaxy far, far, away, managed to perform the "Imperial March" using only a coffee stirrer. We hope Meira continues searching for ways to integrate Star Wars into ordinary objects. Jerks stole photos from Maisie Williams' private Facebook account
Once again, an actress' personal photos never intended for public consumption have made the rounds on Reddit. Images of Maisie Williams' recent trip to Japan that she allegedly posted to her personal Facebook account were shared on a Reddit thread devoted to the 19-year-old Game of Thrones star. The photos in question feature Williams and friends. In one, she's topless as her back faces the camera, which people on the internet have found reason to turn into a scandal. "The images online were shared from Maisie’s personal social media account," a representative for Williams told The New York Post. "The images are not explicit in nature, but pictures of Maisie and close friends at a spa at a recent visit to Japan." Read more... Some people consider dolls creepy enough, but what if that deceptively cute toy was listening to everything you said and, worse yet, letting creeps speak through it? According to The Center for Digital Democracy, a pair of smart toys designed to engage with children in new and entertaining ways are rife with security and privacy holes. The watchdog group was so concerned, they filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission on Dec. 6 (you can read the full complaint here). A similar one was also filed in Europe by the Norwegian Consumer Council. Google Home is about to get a lot more useful. The company is opening its voice-enabled Assistant to developers who can start creating "actions" for the device. Early partners will include media companies like NBC News, Buzzfeed and NPR, as well as consumer apps like Quora, Genius and Todoist. The idea is similar to the "skills" developers create for Amazon's Echo line: companies can create "Conversation Actions" that link their services to Google Assistant on Home. Using the actions created by Domino's, for example, you can ask Google Assistant to order you a pizza, or ask for the latest CNN headlines. Read more... Some people love it, others don't mind it and a lot of people hate it. There is a never-ending war with those who despise cilantro, aka coriander, and those who just don't understand the hatred. While the topic has sparked serious debate and scientific research, cilantro haters have been known to be extremely passionate in their hatred for the green. One customer or employee at an IGA store in Australia even went as far as mocking up this custom sign in an attempt at persuading people away. "CORIANDER IS FUCKING DISGUSTING," the sign states simply. At least a few customers walked by, snickered and agreed that it is indeed fucking disgusting. Read more...
