Cute animals, musical numbers and tearjerkers abound in 2016's top viral ads

Adorable critters, elaborate song-and-dance routines, tearjerking tales of inspiration — these are the staples of advertising virality, and each was in abundant supply among this year's most-shared commercials.

Video tracking firm Unruly tallied up some of 2016's biggest hits from around the world in its annual ranking released this week.

Topping out the list, unsurprisingly, is British department story John Lewis' mood-brightening story of a puppy seeing its Christmas wish come true. Some other notable ads that made the cut include an inspirational musical act performed by people with disability for the Paralympics and a fan-made Doritos Super Bowl spot.  Read more...

In a first for Star Wars, 'Rogue One' clips and opening scenes revealed

For those viewers who labored to the end end of a Twitter livestream plagued with audio problems, Lucasfilm dropped a surprise Friday: an exclusive clip from Rogue One: A Star Wars story.

It was the second clip in two days, the first appearing on the Tonight Show Wednesday night. Actual advance clips from the movie, rather than trailers, is a first for Lucasfilm under Disney ownership.

This time last year, all content from Star Wars: The Force Awakens was sewn up tight, and the viewing public was only allowed to see trailers. However, those trailers were also immediately released on YouTube — whereas these two clips are still exclusive to their venue. (Skip forward to 3:10 in the following vid to see the first one.)  Read more...

This controversial website is targeting 'radical' left-wing academics

Freedom of speech and thought are, in theory, what drives academia — and a new website is drawing criticism for threatening those virtues.

Professor Watchlist rounds up the names of scholars from around the U.S. it deems "radical" and places them on a so-called watch list with their photographs and identities listed alongside their names.

Created by the conservative nonprofit Turning Point USA, it says its purpose is to "expose and document college professors who discriminate against conservative students and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom." But those allegations are often thinly supported and over simplified, citing biased sources like political blogs run by conservative organizations and opinion pieces. Read more...

The sun is your dad

The sun looks like a proud, happy dad with a huge smile in new photos beamed back to Earth by a sun-staring spacecraft.

The new images — taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory — show various features of the sun coincidentally coming together to look just like a face with a crooked smile and male-patterned baldness.

All in all, this makes the sun bear a striking resemblance to Frasier Crane or perhaps your father.

The smiley sun photo was first pointed out on Twitter by solar scientist Karl Battams after the Solar Dynamics Observatory's website was updated with the new photos taken today. Read more...

A confused Chris Pratt seems to think Jennifer Lawrence is in his photos

Passengers co-stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence have both proven themselves to be quite the goofs in the past. And now, they're doing some goofs together. Well, sort of.

Pratt has been chronicling the film's press tour on social media, and fans apparently pointed out that he wasn't sharing any photos with J. Law. So, Pratt responded by posting some photos with her.

The problem is, she's slightly out of frame in them all.

"I cropped #JenniferLawrence out of this picture," Pratt captioned the first photo of the hilarious series. Read more...

Twitter field day: Barack Obama digital media company edition

On December 2, 2016, the internet was gifted the ultimate Friday afternoon Twitter story: Barack Obama has reportedly considered starting a digital media company once he's no longer president.

This is the Platonic idea of a story for media people to riff on. It is the Breaking-Bad-meth-purity-level of a media riff story.

Is it going to actually happen? Apparently not, as the White House communications director said the president has "no plans to get into the media business after he leaves office." Read more...

You're blocked! How to get The Donald to block you on Twitter

Common life goals include starting a business, living on a beach or atop a mountain, obtaining a college degree, and, if a recent Twitter search is to be believed, getting President-elect Donald Trump to block you on Twitter.

A lot of people have taken it upon themselves to poke the orange-tinged bear until he decides he no longer wants to see you in his mentions.

We're not here to comment on whether this is a worthy life goal, so we'll just leave you with a bit or evidence to show we're not making it up.

A dreaded carbon time bomb lurks beneath your feet

There are many uncertainties when it comes to global warming, from how quickly the planet's ice sheets will melt to how global leaders will enact rapid emissions cuts. One nagging scientific uncertainty concerns a rather unsexy topic: the soil. As in, the ground beneath your feet.

There is growing concern that terrestrial soils, which are the Earth's largest reservoir of carbon outside of the oceans, will switch from being a net absorber of greenhouse gases to a net source.

This can happen as microbes in the soil break down organic matter more quickly, thereby releasing carbon dioxide. As Arctic soils warm, these microbes will go to work there for the first time, emitting what had been carbon frozen in the ground into the atmosphere. Read more...

Barack Obama would at least do better in digital media than Rory Gilmore

On Friday, Mic released an article called "Obama considering post-presidential media career, sources say."

Even though the article contains a statement from White House communications director Jen Psaki in which she states, "While the president will remain actively engaged in inspiring young people and he is interested in the changing ways people consume information, he has no plans to get into the media business after he leaves office," we're all spending our Friday evening talking about these rumors.

So why would Barack Obama desire a career in new media after spending eight years rapidly aging due to the massive stress of being president of the USA? Could it be a love for content, a passion for meals consisting of free cereal and seltzer or a desire to download sick apps like Meerkat that will inevitably fade before ever catching on with the general public? Amy Schumer might play IRL Barbie for a Sony movie

The Lego vs. Barbie debate is as old and divisive as Backstreet vs. N*Sync, and now both toys will have feature films to fight with: Sony is developing a live-action Barbie comedy, and is in talks with Amy Schumer to portray the toy heroine, Mashable has confirmed.

Though no deals have been signed, Schumer and two other prominent female artists are in early talks with the studio for the film written by Hillary Winton. Schumer and her sister will likely be involved in the writing process as well.

In the film, Barbie gets kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough, and ends up on a live-action adventure in our world, similar to Disney's Enchanted in 2007. The project emerged from a deal between Sony and Mattel which began over two years ago. Read more...

Fill out this job application form to be considered for Trump's cabinet

President-elect Trump is filling his cabinet with a who's who of rich crazy people.

From Chief Strategist Steve Bannon to Jeff Sessions, his pick for attorney general, each one of Trump's selections seems to come with more than a handful of scandals and conflicts. Trump's pick for National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, for example, owns a lobbying organization that has received "tens of thousands" of dollars from foreign companies. His Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was a Goldman trader who's since become a hedge fund manager.

Comedian casually grills Eric Trump on flight to Scotland

Facebook is developing AI to bust 'offensive' Live video: report

Facebook has long been vigilant about keeping your News Feed free of "inappropriate" content. That's relatively simple when you're talking about material that can be reviewed in full after it's posted — but what happens if something goes wrong during a livestream?

A new initiative is reportedly in the works to build up the social network's flagging system for offensive content in a particularly difficult area: Facebook Live.

Facebook has previously relied in part on a system that depended on users to report offensive materials, which are then checked by Facebook employees against "community standards."  Read more...

Charles Barkley foolishly rips the Warriors for playing 'girl basketball'

Former NBA star and current TNT analyst Charles Barkley says he's no fan of the Golden State Warriors. Not because of their recent successes, though, and not because they added yet another superstar by signing Kevin Durant this summer.

YouTubers mad at YouTube again, this time over vanishing subscribers

LOS ANGELES — PewDiePie is so mad at YouTube that he's calling it quits once he hits 50 million subscribers.

Why? Felix Kjellberg is among a handful of frustrated creators who claim they have seen their video views decline and their subscribers suddenly disappear. Some YouTubers even say they have lost 30 to 40 percent of their usual views.

The general theory is that YouTube has a new algorithm that has caused glitches. Although some in the internet community have come up with a conspiracy theory that YouTube boosts ads on the “trending” tab and videos with more likes and comments.

"It is really upsetting how [YouTube] did this change. They won't explain what happened properly to anyone," PewDiePie, who has just over 49 million subscribers, said in a video uploaded Friday. "It's not just me, a lot of YouTubers are noting this." Read more...

'Rogue One' cast gets mildly political, stands up for diversity

It says a lot about post-election politics — and the traditional caution of Hollywood — that when actors in a major movie make a non-controversial statement about the importance of diversity in society, it is cause for wild applause.

But that's what happened Friday at the Rogue One Q&A at Lucasfilm, which was livestreamed on TwitterPeople's deputy editor and moderator JD Heyman pointedly asked the Star Wars movie's cast, and its director Gareth Edwards, whether the movie had any kind of message for the real world.

Now it has seemed obvious for a while to many viewers that there's a political message in a movie about a band of diverse, downtrodden rebels coming together to strike a blow at an authoritarian leader who has transformed a Republic into an Empire. As Forest Whitaker says at the beginning of the first full Rogue One trailer: "The world is coming undone." Read more...

The NFL is way overthinking this GIF thing

The NFL is finally modifying its overbearing social media policy, but making things quite complicated in the process.

In a memo reportedly sent out to all 32 teams on Friday, the NFL announced it would amend the social media policy it instituted two months ago, which prevented teams from posting GIFs and videos during games.

Teams are allowed to do so now, but this is still the NFL, so of course the change is accompanied by some very specific rules.

Previously, the league handed out $25,000 fines for posting unapproved video (including GIFs) during games. The new policy lets teams post video, but only of things like "fans, cheerleaders, mascots and touchdown dances," according to a memo obtained by Yahoo! Finance. Read more...

These incredible color postcards of 1890 Switzerland are anything but neutral

Vispach Bridge and the Matterhorn, Valais.

Image: Library of Congress

These pictures of the sublime landscapes and stately towns of Switzerland were created using the Photochrom process, a technique for applying color to monochrome images with nuance and precision.

Invented in Switzerland by an employee of a printing company, Photochrom was a time-consuming and delicate process.

First, a tablet of lithographic limestone would be coated with a light-sensitive emulsion, placed under a photo negative and exposed to sunlight for several hours.

The emulsion would then harden in proportion to the tones of the negative. The softer portions would be removed with a solvent, leaving a fixed lithographic image on the stone. Read more...

Atlas humanoid robot can now tiptoe over rubble to track down wayward humans

In this latest episode of How We're Making Robots That Will Be Able to Hunt You Down Wherever You Go, our old friend the Atlas humanoid robot has learned a scary new trick: walking over pretty much any unexpected obstacle.

We've seen the Atlas show off its walking and balancing skills before, but in this new demonstration it navigates its way over random, unknown objects of varying sizes. You know, kinda like building rubble a human might hide under after Skynet has already laid waste to the city.

The important aspect of this demo is the fact that Atlas had no preexisting knowledge of the terrain, so it isn't simply walking a set course, it's actually figuring out how to handle new, foreign objects in its path and adjusting its weight and balance with each step much like a human would.  Read more...

Airbnb sells out hosts in NYC lawsuit settlement

After rallying hosts to fight a New York state law that fines them for posting technically illegal listings on Airbnb, the company has abandoned the cause.

Airbnb settled a lawsuit against New York on Friday on the condition that fines for violating the states's apartment rental rules would only be leveled against hosts and not the company. The law was always written in a way that implied its fines of up to $7,500 would apply to hosts, but now Airbnb has that distinction in writing.

"We very much see this as a material step forward for our hosts, with Airbnb and the city agreeing to 'work cooperatively on ways to address New York City's permanent housing shortage, including through host compliance with Airbnb's One Host, One Home policy,'" Airbnb said in a statement. "We look forward to using this as a basis to finding an approach that protects responsible New Yorkers while cracking down on illegal hotels that remove permanent housing off the market or create unsafe spaces."  Read more...

'The Last of Us: Part II' sends Ellie on a quest for revenge

The 2016 PlayStation Experience keynote concluded with a brief, purely cinematic look at Naughty Dog's hoped for follow-up to The Last of Us.

Titled The Last of Us: Part II, the teaser finds a grownup, guitar-strumming Ellie in a rundown forest cabin. From the look of things, she just finished scrapping with a group of bad dudes and paused for a singing break.
