Yes, Patriots coach Bill Belichick did write that letter of support to Donald Trump

Many an eyebrow was raised when Donald Trump read aloud a letter of support from New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick at a campaign rally in New Hampshire on Monday night.

Wednesday morning — hours after Trump was elected president of the United States in an upset that shocked pundits — Belichick told reporters that he's "not a political person." The letter, he said, was about "friendship."

After Trump read the letter he said was from Belichick, many expressed skepticism the popular Patriots coach had in fact endorsed the Republican candidate. Here's a transcript; there's video embedded below that.  Read more...

Chicago anthem 'Go Cubs Go' cracks the Billboard charts

As if the "first time since" narrative surrounding the Chicago Cubs hadn't been beaten to death, they just did it again.

A week after the Cubs won the World Series for the first time since 1908, the team's anthem, "Go, Cubs, Go," claimed a spot on Billboard's charts.

But this wasn't a "first time since" scenario. This was the first time ever.

Steve Goodman's 1948 tune — which plays after Cubs victories at home — took the No. 21 spot on the Pop Digital Song Sales chart and No. 49 on the Hot Digital Song Sales chart, according to Billboard. The song also debuted at No. 3 on the Hot 100's Bubbling Under chart and climbed to No. 3 on Spotify's Viral 50 list.  Read more...

Instagram's non-chronological timeline makes this election even more painful

This is not the week for the non-chronological.

After watching Hillary Clinton concede the U.S. presidential race to Donald Trump, Instagram users are scrolling through their feeds to find hopeful photos of women voting in pantsuits 24 hours earlier.

Instagram's non-chronological timeline, introduced in June, is putting "I Voted!" selfies and other photos taken before election results rolled in next to more somber photos posted after Trump won the White House.

The out-of-order Instagram timeline has attracted complaints since it debuted, but this time around it's causing many users heartache rather than just annoyance.  Read more...

Why we keep fighting: A salute to the women who got us this far

It’s official: Donald Trump is set to become the president of the United States, dashing the hopes of feminists poised to usher in the first woman president in the country's history.

Nearly 100 years since women won the right to vote in the United States, the nation had a chance to elect a woman as its commander-in-chief. Hillary Clinton had already made history by clinching the Democratic nomination, but voters rejected her historic bid for the presidency on Tuesday. That "highest, hardest glass ceiling" remains in place, awaiting the woman who'll shatter it.

Clinton was hopeful in her concession speech: "Someday, someone will." Read more...

Facebook made a new Snapchat clone for Brazil because why not

If you were wondering if Facebook is finally growing weary with trying to copy Snapchat, the answer, it seems, is: not even close.

The social network launched a new app in Brazil on Tuesday that looks like yet another near-perfect Snapchat clone.

Called Flash, the app allows Brazilian users to send disappearing messages — complete with filters masks emoji and doodles — to friends or add them to their in-app stories.

Facebook has previously tested some Snapchat-like camera features in its main app during the Olympics in Brazil. Apparently those tests were successful as Facebook is now launching a similar experience in Flash.  Read more...

The voices of 'Overwatch' had a blast at BlizzCon, and filmed it

Heroes never die, but they do have IRL alter-egos.

Jonny Cruz — the voice of Lúcio in Overwatch — met up with several of his fellow voice actors at BlizzCon 2016 over the weekend. The fun-loving group spent some time hamming it up for the camera, playing with a variety of their memorable one-liners from the game.

Cruz cut the whole thing together and shared it on Tuesday, giving Overwatch fans a brief respite from the day's tense vote counting process.

Enjoy it now for yourself. It's really strange to hear these oh-so-familiar voices coming out of actual human mouths, but also great to actually see the talented individuals we've spent so much time with as fans. Read more...

'GTA Online: Deadline' is the 'Tron' crossover you didn't know you wanted

Why are Tron-inspired light cycles now a thing in GTA Online

You know what? It's best not to ask. The new, free GTA Online: Deadline update adds extremely familiar-looking Shotaro Light Bikes to the game, along with a competitive race mode that makes each bike's light trail a dangerous physical hazard.

Yeah, it's Tron comes to GTA Online. Kind of dated at this point — not only was Tron: Legacy a failure, it also came out six years ago — but this looks super cool. Go check it out.

Watch Conor McGregor meet an Irish NYPD officer and feel all of the feels

For a guy who makes millions to kick, punch and wrestle other people, Conor McGregor sure seems like a nice guy.

The Irish mixed martial arts fighter, who will fight in UFC's main event on Saturday at Madison Square Garden, met one of his biggest fans — an Irish NYPD officer — in New York City this week.

All of the feels ensued.

"Besides my kids being born this has been one of the best days of my life," she said.

McGregor isn't this kind to everyone. UFC fined McGregor $150,000 last month after a heated argument with one of his opponents turned into a barrage of thrown water bottles and energy drink cans. Earlier this year, he called WWE wrestlers "messed up pussies." Read more...

Although we had a limited time to test the Necromancer, it was one of the most satisfying classes to play in Diablo 3, primarily due to its dark and unique abilities (some of which are making a return from Diablo 2). Read more...

First and foremost, Americans wanted to know basic facts about their often confusing electoral system:

After last year's drama, Starbucks unveils holiday cups designed by 13 women

On this bleary, post-election afternoon, I trudged through Brookfield Place, a fancy mall in Manhattan's Financial District, with the promise of being one of the first to see Starbucks' 2016 holiday cup.

I entered the mall's Starbucks thinking: Can we please just let this cup thing be drama-free?

This year's holiday cups are red and white, and feature 13 different designs from 13 women from six countries.

“We hope that this year’s red holiday cup designs express the shared spirit of the holidays as told by our customers,” Sharon Rothstein, Starbucks' global chief marketing officer, said in a press release. Read more...

Everything women stand to lose to President Trump

American women woke up in a terrifying new world Wednesday morning. And for progressives, the crushing despair of Hillary Clinton's defeat by Donald J. Trump turned into fresh horror at his proposed agenda.

Though women believe abortion rights are theirs to keep, Trump has promised to appoint a Supreme Court justice who would overturn that constitutional guarantee. Women in same-sex relationships who wed their partner, or want to, have a different reason to fear Trump's appointment: he's pledged to nominate someone opposed to marriage equality.

Trump's America: What women, immigrants and people of color want you to know

America has voted, and for many marginalized communities, it feels like the nation has failed them.

President-elect Donald Trump's campaign rhetoric has been dubbed racist, sexist, ableist and abusive throughout his fight to the presidency. And although his tactics have long been criticized as abrasive and alarming, Trump succeeded in defeating Hillary Clinton for the presidency.

Many activists argue his victory came by harnessing privilege, deeply offending and disregarding various communities on his way to the most powerful seat in the country. New software could give lip-reading powers to everyone

Giving everyone the ability to comprehend one another might soon be much easier.

The development of the software, which was supported in part by Alphabet's DeepMind AI program, has been detailed in a paper which reports LipNet has bested the existing top marks in lipreading tech accuracy by 13.8 percent. The previous best software and its 79.6 percent mark was already light-years ahead of the efforts of human lip-readers, who averaged 52.3 percent accuracy with the same test.   Read more...

Seth Meyers tears up while talking about Trump win on 'Late Night'

With tears in his eyes, Meyers was clear to give audiences a message of hope, and especially, he hoped he'd be as wrong about Trump as president as he'd been about him in the past.

"I felt a lot of emotions last night and into today," Meyers said. "Some sadness, some anger, some fear. Millions of Indians are taking a break today from their office to visit banks and exchange the recently withdrawn currency notes with new bills that have gone into circulation from today. Naturally, many are taking a selfie with the new notes  — hey you don’t get new currency notes in the country everyday.

The John Lewis Christmas ad is here and it's guaranteed to make you happy

There are various signs that Christmas is approaching in Britain — the lights being switched on; mince pies appearing on the shelves — but the release of the John Lewis Christmas advert surely has to be one of the most hotly anticipated.

And although many of their previous ads have been tear-jerkers, this year's is the perfect chirpy antidote to the widespread misery of 2016.

After all: what can possibly be more cheering than the sight of a smiley dog bouncing up and down on a trampoline?

Indians sign up for mobile wallets after most cash rendered useless

Indians have avoided digital transactions for decades, but this week they are increasingly looking at cashless solutions.

In the aftermath of withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination currency notes earlier this week, people are increasingly downloading and using mobile wallet apps such as Paytm, Ola Money, and Freecharge, the companies say. Most of them took the opportunity to advertise their solutions with full-page advertisements in national dailies.

Ola Money said Wednesday it saw a 1,500 percent increase in wallet recharges (adding money from a bank account to the digital wallet). Paytm said it saw a 435 percent upward spike in traffic as "millions" of people used its app. It also saw 200 percent increase in app download numbers, and 250 percent surge in overall transactions and transaction value. Don't believe the tweets claiming 'The Simpsons' predicted Trump's win

The Simpsons might be really, bizarrely good at predicting things — just look at this list of technological predictions they've made over the years — but they didn't predict Donald Trump's presidential win.

At least, they didn't predict it in the way suggested by the following tweet that went viral on Wednesday.

Not only did the Simpson predicted Trump winning, they even "predicted" the electoral map and they got it rightpic.twitter.com/2t1DORUjBM

Relax! There's no GPS chip in new Rs 2,000 notes

There’s no denying that the new currency notes in India look visually appealing and come with enhanced security features. But they still don’t carry a GPS chip, despite what everyone is telling you on WhatsApp.

India’s finance minister Arun Jaitley today confirmed that there’s no GPS chip embedded on the new Rs 2,000 notes. Responding to the question, an irate Jaitley said, "from where did you come to know this? I haven't heard of it."

Hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise address to the nation and announce the new currency notes, a rumor began circulating on WhatsApp that a new Rs 2,000 note will be issued by the Indian government and it will come embedded with a nano-GPS chip. The rumor gained steam once Modi made the new Rs 2,000 notes official and also made it to many news publications as journalists scrambled to find anything they could to write about the new currency bills. This letter proves the Nixons saw Trump's victory coming

For many people, Donald Trump's victory at the U.S. presidential elections came as a shock.

One very powerful couple, though, knew Trump would snatch the top post almost 30 years ago, when he was a young real estate magnate.

Ex-President Richard Nixon wrote a short letter to the president-elect back in December 1987 after his wife and former first lady Pat watched Trump on Phil Donahue's TV show.

Irish couple live tweets journey to receive legal abortion in England

LONDON — An Irish couple is live tweeting its journey as the anonymous pair travels across the Irish Sean abortion in England.

The couple began tweeting in the early hours of Thursday morning as it set off in a taxi to the airport in Ireland, and will be posting updates throughout the day

In the Republic of Ireland, a constitutional ban on abortion means that only women whose pregnancies put their lives at risk can have access to safe, legal abortion services. This constitutional ban means that abortion is not permitted in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities. In July, the Irish parliament blocked a bill that would have allowed abortions to take place in Irish hospitals in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities.  Read more...

Google's first shot at a real VR headset is a normcore miss

The world of virtual reality is a convoluted mess right now, divided into three categories: low, mid and high end.

On the low end you've got Google Cardboard and all the "viewers" that don't have any kind of head tracking or controllers. These are pretty terrible in most cases.

In the middle, you've got Samsung's Gear VR and a dozen of clones that provide good VR experiences with limited head-tracking and controller support (either built-in or wireless).

And on the high-end, there's the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which require expensive, powerful gaming PCs to work. But man, are the VR experiences worth it. Sony's PlayStation VR gets lumped into this category, too, but it's a notch down from the Rift and Vive. Read more...

Consumer habits are affecting bird species around the world

Our rising plastic consumption and growing appetite for beef are endangering bird species around the world, scientists said this week.

The papers were both published Wednesday in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances.

The first study explores why seabirds are so inclined to gobble up marine plastic pollution. The second paper used satellite imaging and geospatial data to see how deforestation and industrial agriculture are putting hundreds of species at risk of extinction.  Read more...

FAA declares YUGE, glamorous no-fly zone over NYC's Trump Tower

In another demonstration of the repercussions of Trump's victory, the Federal Aviation Administration has now banned flights over midtown Manhattan—where Trump Tower is located—until Trump moves into the White House in January.

The temporary flight restriction, or TFR in FAA-speak, went into effect on Nov. 9 and continues through Jan. 21, 2017. It bans flights from the surface through 3,000 feet with a radius of 2 miles. According to the FAA's website, the restriction's reason is "VIP movement."

While TFRs are frequently issued for presidential visits at the request of the Secret Service, this one blocks off flights over a popular corridor for helicopter tours, media choppers and even airliners maneuvering in the busiest airspace in the country.  Read more...

There probably won't be a new 4-inch iPhone SE in 2017

Sorry guys, but small iPhones just aren't as hot as big iPhones.

LinkedIn could soon be blocked in Russia after Moscow court decision

LinkedIn could soon be blocked in Russia, a Russian court threatened on Thursday.

If LinkedIn loses a battle over violations of a Russian law governing personal data, the nation's communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, could block the professional networking site. Russia's personal data law requires companies to keep Russians' personal data within the country, a difficult requirement to uphold for most foreign companies and social networks.

‘’LinkedIn’s vision is to create economic opportunity for the entire global workforce. This iPad accessory is about to up-end the whole 3D imaging industry

From 360 video to 3D emoji, there's a big movement from Microsoft and others to make 3D imagery accessible to everyone. However, the act of scanning a real-word environment — a room and everything in it, for example — remains an expensive chore, involving hours of manual measurements and subsequent building in 3D software.

That will no longer be the case if the Structure Sensor has anything to say about it. Introduced by Occipital two years ago as a way to quickly scan objects and spaces and turn them into 3D imagery, the $379 gadget is getting an upgrade. With a new app called Canvas, the scanner can scan a room in incredible detail, letting users measure things like the length of furniture and the distance from floor to ceiling. You're the Worst star Aya Cash shared a screenshot of an email she sent to her agent after her first audition in Trump's America, which didn't go so well. Cash describes the scene, in which women auditioning for the role were crying in the waiting room.

Why women in the UK just walked out of work

LONDON — Women from all over the UK have just downed tools and left their workplaces in an act of protest against the gender pay gap.

At precisely 3:34 p.m. women from across the nation staged a mass exodus from their jobs to mark the moment when women effectively start working for free — because, on average, they earn less than men.

According to the Fawcett Society, the gender pay gap in the UK currently stands at 13.9 percent; which equates to women in the UK working for free from today until 2017.

The #EqualPayDay walkout — organised by Stylist Magazine — is intended to be a "symbolic gesture" to highlight the contribution of women and raise awareness of "one of the most important economic issues of the day"

"Closing the gender pay gap could add £150 billion to the UK’s GDP alone. Not to mention the benefit to both sexes of ensuring your work is equally valued," reads an article about the initiative published by the magazine.  Read more...

Edward Snowden predicted an even bolder surveillance state under new leader

President-elect Donald Trump is only months away from wielding the power of American intelligence agencies, including the NSA's mass surveillance operation.

Many people on Twitter have already begun to voice their concern.

This, they've said, is what happens when a complacent nation allows the construction of a legally dubious mass surveillance system under a president not generally viewed as irresponsible. Then, when the reigns of the country are handed to a man whose campaign staffers wouldn't even allow him the use of his own Twitter account in the lead-up to the election, it's too late to do much. Edward Snowden warned us about a president like Donald Trump

Edward Snowden warned us we were just an election away from surveillance-based tyranny.

In 2013, the former NSA contractor-turned whilstleblower spoke about the dangers of allowing a surveillance state to bloom before handing its powers to a president willing to use them for whatever he or she likes.

"A new leader will be elected, they'll flip the switch, say that because of the crisis, because of the dangers that we face in the world — some new and unpredicted threat — we need more authority, we need more power," Snowden said. "And there will be nothing the people can do at that point to oppose it. It will be turnkey tyranny." Read more...

Facebook pledges to clear News Feed of misinformation, again

Facebook is promising yet again to tackle the spread of misinformation in your News Feed.

"We value authentic communication, and hear consistently from those who use Facebook that they prefer not to see misinformation," Adam Mosseri, the vice president of product management, said in a statement to TechCrunch Thursday following widespread criticism of he platform's performance as news conduit during the election.

It remains unclear what "authentic communication" means, or why Facebook seems to acknowledge that this is a problem only because its users say "they prefer not to see misinformation" much in the same way that you might prefer not to eat a bologna sandwich covered in sand. The company did not immediately respond to Mashable's request for comment. Read more...

Reinhardt saves 'Overwatch' team by essentially jumping on a grenade

In Overwatch, sometimes the good of the team outweighs the good of a single player.

Reddit user Worros demonstrated just how selfless Overwatch players can (and should) be by saving its entire team from certain disaster with a split-second decision to sacrifice its own life for everyone else's.

Using Reinhardt's charge ability, Worros swiftly took an exploding D.Va mech out of the fray and into an area where nobody would get hurt.

The hero D.Va's ultimate ability can be the single most devastating move in the game, effectively killing every enemy player that is unfortunate enough to be standing next to it. The only way to save yourself is to run away quickly, get behind cover or hide behind Reinhardt's shield. Read more...

Latest 'Survivor' castaway takes responsibility for the final vote

The merge is now behind us, but the next Survivor castaway didn't have much time to enjoy it.

Former Millennial tribe member Michelle Schubert was the latest casualty of this week's Tribal Council vote. While it wasn't a surprise to see the vote turn in the favor of the Gen-X squad — too many ruffled feathers among the Millennials — it was a surprise to see Michelle go.

A quietly strategic player who was part of the original Vanua tribe's power alliance from day one, Michelle fell in what amounted to a numbers vote. Will had immunity, there was some suspicion that Jay had an Idol and Gen-Xers believe — perhaps correctly — that Jay would have burned his theoretical Idol to save his buddy. Read more...
