Teens have officially gone off the deep end with the #BackpackChallenge

It's happened: teens have finally lost their damn minds.

The mannequin challenge and Andy's coming are dead, and a new, much more violent challenge is making its way through American high schools: the #BackpackChallenge.

Here's how the #BackpackChallenge works: one very brave person runs between two rows of lined-up participants, who throw their backpacks full-force at the runner.

As you might guess, this doesn't turn out well for the runner, who typically topples over after two or three blows. Backpacks are heavy.

Here is the original video from Twitter user Abucci Wood who claims he is the challenge's creator: Read more...

And yet:

Notre Dame football team placed on probation following academic misconduct

The NCAA placed Notre Dame's football team on one-year probation Tuesday after a student-trainer committed academic misconduct, according to a statement from the NCAA.

During the 2012 and 2013 seasons, the trainer completed coursework for two football players and gave "impermissible academic assistance" to six other players, according to the NCAA. A number of those players also committed academic misconduct individually by playing while ineligible.

As a result, the team is forced to vacate its wins from the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Notre Dame went 12-1 in 2012, and eventually lost the BCS championship game to Alabama. In 2013, the Irish put up a 9-4 record. All 21 of those victories will be forfeited.  Read more...

Snapchat Spectacles: The teardown

Snapchat's new smart sunglasses, Snapchat Spectacles, are the hottest gadget in town. It's probably the first wearable designed specifically for the Snapchat generation. They're also in incredibly short supply and only available through special robot vending machines. Which is why we had to tear one down.

Snapchat Spectacles, which arrived on the social media landscape a little more than a week ago, let you Snap videos from your point of view. They're essentially life-casters for the teen-set.

Unlike previous wearable glasses, Spectacles look, more or less, like hipster sunglasses. Snapchat did all it could to hide the technology away. The only indications that there's something else afoot here are the two yellow circles on either side of the sunglasses. One houses the video camera and the other a circle of LEDs that make it clear to others when Spectacles are filming. Read more...

How to get high with your family this Thanksgiving

It's going to be a green Thanksgiving for families across a lot of America this year.

Gathering with family and a copious amount of food and drink is part of what makes the Thanksgiving holiday so special. But many families in certain America states may be considering adding a different offering to their holiday menu this year: marijuana.

Thanks to the 2016 election, California, Massachusetts, Nevada and possibly Maine have all voted to legalize cannabis for recreational use among adults, joining Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Washington DC. So, now that pot is legal for millions more families and the stigma surrounding cannabis use is slumping faster than you can slide into the comfy spot on your couch, it's safe to say that it's going to be a very relaxing Thanksgiving for many. Timely browser extension replaces ‘alt-right’ with ‘white supremacy'

As the alt-right grows louder, journalists are still debating what to call the movement. One Chrome extension, at least, has taken that decision out of their hands.

The "Stop Normalizing Alt Right" browser extension replaces appearances of the phrase "alt-right" with the phrase "white supremacy."

A Google search for "alt-right," with the results doctored by the Stop Normalizing Alt Right browser extension.

Image: screenshot/google

The term "alt-right" was coined to describe a far-right ideology whose supporters often espouse racist, misogynist and otherwise bigoted views. But since Donald Trump's win in the presidential election, many have called for journalists to more directly refer to the movement as "white nationalist" or "neo-Nazi."  Read more...

8 ways to consume news without using Facebook

The era of "fake news" is upon us and it's time to reconsider the ways in which we consume information.

After multiple media reports documented a severe rise in incorrect articles being shared on Facebook, the platform announced its plan to break the "fake news" cycle.

Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a post on Saturday the company will introduce a number of measures to help with the infestation of fake news, including stronger detection, easier reporting tools, warnings and new advertising policies.

Truck driver fired via text gets his sweet revenge

A truck driver who was fired from his job while on the road tried to get the last laugh.

Darren Walp, 36, of Crum Lynne, Pennsylvania was driving a load of corn from Reynolds, Nebraska to Hanover, Kansas in August when he was fired by his boss via text.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Walp's boss texted him saying, "Pack your stuff ASAP and you can leave..." according to an arrest warrant that was later released.

Walp was still in possession of the truck's load of corn, so he allegedly decided to seek some revenge on his trucking company. He pulled over to the side of the road, opened his trailer's bottom hatch and took off, leaving nearly 1,000 bushels of corn strewn across Highway 8 in Gage County, Nebraska.  Read more...

Under Trump, dark days ahead for net neutrality and the open internet

The battle for the future of a free and equal internet is flaring up again, and looks set to take a dramatic turn.

The momentous win that net neutrality advocates celebrated in 2015 is on track to be reversed during Donald Trump's presidency.

On Monday, the president-elect named two high-profile opponents of net neutrality to oversee the transition of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which handles federal regulations of companies providing internet access to consumers.

Quick refresher: "Net neutrality" is the principal that all internet traffic should be equal—that we should all have the same internet. That means: No blocking sites or throttling traffic by providers, or letting those same providers get away with selling faster, more open internet access to individuals or companies with the money to pay for it. The internet's always worked this way, but in the past decade, the issue's become a major concern for internet advocates worried about powerful business interests turning the web into a glorified version of cable television. Given Trump's appointments, concern for the future of the issue is flaring up again. Read more...

There may be no aloe in that aloe vera you just bought

If you find yourself needing some aloe vera to soothe a sunburn after your Caribbean Christmas vacation, be wary: it may not have any aloe at all.

Bloomberg reports that tests it had an independent laboratory perform on aloe vera bought off the shelves at Wal-Mart, CVS, and Target did not contain any traces of actual aloe, though all three listed aloe barbadensis leaf juice as a primary ingredient.

Aloe vera is big business, too, according to Bloomberg, racking sales of $146 million in the last year.

The small, foldable DJI Mavic Pro is the ultimate personal drone

Owning a DJI Mavic Pro is a little like having a secret. The drone is so small, light and, most importantly, foldable, that it can easily fit in a backpack, a large handbag or even a car’s glove compartment. No one looking at me walking down the streets of Manhattan would know I have the power of flight in my backpack.

It’s more, though, than just the size that makes DJI’s new pro-sumer drone a winner. It’s expertly designed, smart and one of the easiest-to-fly drones I have ever encountered.

The $999 drone – and included remote – is unlike anything DJI has ever produced before. Gone are the smooth curves of DJI’s Phantom series. Instead you have a tough, gray plastic body and slightly military-looking lines that might remind you of a tiny tank. It weighs just 1.64 pounds and, folded, is 83x83x198 millimeters — about the size of a water bottle. The four rotors attach bayonet-style to the arms and, for the first time in my memory, there are no back-up blades.  Read more...

Watch: New Zealand sea bed lifted over 19 feet during earthquake

Earthquakes is universally known to be powerfully destructive, but it's not everyday you can witness them raise a seabed a bunch of feet into the air.

A Youtube video from GeoNet features an area in New Zealand known as the Papatea fault. That's where earthquakes with magnitudes of up to 7.8 literally lifted the sea bed on the coast of the south island.

In the video, researcher Kevin Berryman inspects the area where the quakes lifted the sea bed almost 6 metres (19.6 feet) into the air, essentially creating a massive wall a little out to sea.

According to locals, Berryman said, the sound of the fault shift was "just horrendous" to locals, saying they "described not the earthquake noise but the noise of water running off the top of the platform here." Read more...

You can blame 'heavy' webpages for frustrating online shopping delays

There are few hallmarks of the holiday shopping season more frustrating than those infamous Black Friday check-out lines.

It's bad enough to have struggled through the crowds before sunrise in a battle for doorbuster specials. Waiting in line among the mass of other shoppers after the adrenaline has worn off and counting on an overtaxed seasonal employee manning the register to make the process run smoothly is even worse.

There may be one other experience that can measure up on the frustration-scale: an online shopping system delay.

The physical commitment and stress might not be on the same level, but being stripped of the advantages of buying online — staying home, dodging crowds and not being required to put on pants chief among them — is an unpleasant shock. In-store shoppers expect the lines, but online shoppers expect the instant gratification of clearing their shopping cart with a click. Read more...

At the Airport Operators Association conference, O'Leary said Ryanair could make such generous offerings by drawing its profits from shared revenue (partially from shopping and retail services) at the airports it works with, The Guardian reportedRead more...

Wattpad, an online community of readers and writers, announced Tuesday that has partnered with Universal Cable Productions (UCP), a division of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.

Under the new deal, UCP will produce a number of television projects derived from Wattpad content across multiple categories including: mystery/thriller, teen, science fiction, action and general fiction.

“Wattpad data will help spot compelling stories with massive built-in audiences, and fans will influence the development process,” head of Wattpad Studios Aron Levitz said in a statement. “There’s no place for hunches and guesses when it comes to content development these days. Data- and community-driven entertainment is the future, and Wattpad Studios is leading the way.” Read more...

The company's audit team found several instances of language they thought had the potential to incite violence. Like many other big ad networks, AppNexus bars sites that traffic in unsavory activities like hate speech, pornography or media pirating. Read more...

Aussie NBA player Matthew Dellavedova is getting his own biopic

Love him or hate him, Australian NBA player Matthew Dellavedova has done well to capture attention of basketball fans with his hustle on the court.

While some may paint Delly as the league's dirtiest player, many others think that's not always a bad thing.

Perhaps that's why the life of the Milwaukee Bucks point guard makes for an attractive movie concept. A kind of twisted Aussie Cool Runnings saga in which an unlikely kid makes a splash in the big time.

A biopic is set to be made about Dellavedova, capturing his meteoric rise from small town Australian to championship winner, with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. Read more...

Justin Bieber leaves a fan bloody after punching him from a moving car

Justin Bieber doesn't love over-eager fans.

That fact has been established numerous times now, what with the artist walking off stage when the crowd was screaming obnoxiously instead of, like, listening in quiet contemplation.

But after a fan in Barcelona invaded Bieber's physical space by swatting him with loving aggression through an open car window, Bieber reacted in expected Bieber fashion — with anger

The Spanish fan was all up in his personal business one minute. And the next minute, BAM!

Bieber's car drives off and the unnamed fan is left nursing a bloody lip with what seems like a mixture of excitement and shock. He truly is shook. This is possibly both the best and worst moment of his life.  Read more...

What are 'drop bears' and why is one town naming a street after them?

Koalas are cute and cuddly, right? You gorgeous, naive reader, just how deeply wrong you are.

The koala's vicious cousin, "drop bear" is totally a real thing and it will bite, kill and even embarrass you, if you get too close.

The mythical creatures are widely regarded (at least in camp fire tales and articles such as this, designed to scare foreigners) to be the size of a small leopard. They drop from the camouflage of eucalyptus trees onto unsuspecting bushwalkers.

It's about time such a formidable beast got naming rights to an Australian landmark.

'This Is Us' gives us a Thanksgiving stuffed with revelations

This recap contains spoilers for This Is Us Season 1, episode 8, titled "Pilgrim Rick."

It's Thanksgiving on This Is Us, which means the show that thrives on punching us in the feels has even more license to do so, because Thanksgiving is already fraught with family conflict and issues.

So. Many. Issues.

So really, why not heap some tears on the plate to top off the feast that is Turkey Day? Let's unpack our emotional baggage and dig in.

What Else Can Go Wrong?

This week, we learned the story of the family traditions that Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) established when the family was headed to Rebecca's family's house and their car caught a flat a few miles from the Pinewood Lodge motel. Desk clerk "Pilgrim Rick" became the basis for the pilgrim hat tradition Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) maintain to this day, along with a 3.4 mile hike, Thanksgiving cheese dogs and the yarn ball of thankfulness. This year, more than the yarn unravels, as Randall finds out a big piece of information. But more about that in a bit. Read more...

Injured kangaroo being shot by cops in front of a kid is disturbing viewing

Often the only way to help a badly injured animal is to be put of it out of its misery. But you'd hope the person pulling the trigger would check to see if there are kids around first. Geez.

According to News Corp, Australian police were called to the suburbs of Melbourne on Nov 21. and attempted to put a critically-injured kangaroo down with a rifle.

The officer was filmed — by local man Hash Tropoja — shooting the animal just seconds before a small child rode past on his scooter, mere metres from the .22 calibre rifle's target.

In the disturbing footage, a nearby fellow officer is heard telling his colleague "There's a kid coming, sir," right before the rifle-holder fired. The kangaroo was also shot in such a way that it's seen twitching and writhing graphically in a small pool of blood, as the child scoots past. Safe to say he's scarred for life, then. Read more...

They blocked Netflix, but no one's in a rush to regulate insecure 'smart devices'

It seems the banal world of baby monitors and webcams is all it takes to bring down our most popular websites these days.

So, what should we do about it? Well, we shouldn't regulate — at least not yet, according to the Australian government.

At an address at the National Press Club in Canberra Wednesday, Minister Dan Tehan, who assists the prime minister with cyber security, said the government would regulate smart devices to ensure adequate security only as a "last resort."

The option may have to be exercised sooner rather than later, however. In late October, major sites like Twitter, Netflix and Spotify were left briefly inaccessible after thousands of insecure internet-connected devices were hijacked and used to funnel a stream of malicious traffic at the domain name systems (DNS) provider, Dyn.  Read more...

18 of the most excellent tattoos for pop culture diehards

Tattoos are pretty much forever, so when you get one, it better be good. And by good, we mean pop culture-referencing.

While there's a tendency to get a tattoo meaning something significant — like your mother's name, or Chinese characters *shudder* meaning "luck" — we're in admiration of those who've used their bodies to pay tribute to their favourite modern day icons.

There's an inherent risk that a pop culture tattoo will stop being relevant at some point, so we're giving two thumbs up to these brave souls, who felt the fear and did it anyway.  Read more...

Here's the proof that the Niffler from 'Fantastic Beasts' is actually 100% real

LONDON — Three baby Nifflers have been born at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, and their muggle caretakers, bless them, seem to think they are actually echidnas.

Echidnas (also known as puggles) are a species of spiny anteater that are notoriously difficult to breed in captivity. In the wild, they are shy and elusive, making it difficult to observe their reproductive habits — possibly because they're actually, definitely, the magical breed known as Nifflers and they do what they want.

The baby "puggles" are the first batch to grace the zoo in almost 30 years, and actually hatched from their eggs back in August. However, the zoo waited until the little critters had developed before making the announcement public. Read more...

How you'd love to troll your Trump-supporting family this Thanksgiving and what to say instead

Happy Turkey Day everyone, and welcome to the worst Thanksgiving of your life.

Beloved KKK-darling Donald Trump has been officially elected president of the United States of America, promising to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, put law-abiding Muslims on a registry and destroy our enemies at Hamilton. For people who voted for Clinton, going home to visit their Trump-supporting parents this Thanksgiving is an exercise in torture — and yet somehow they still need to find a way to talk to them about the election.

Of course, it's too late to change Trump-supporters' vote, but it's on anti-Trumpers to respectfully challenge them on their attitudes, help curb the wave of hate violence currently sweeping the nation and prepare for 2018. And no, they can't do it by calling them racist misogynistic morons — science says that just doesn't help. Read more...

These Irish people are positively delighted by American Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is celebrated as a national holiday in the United States. But international curiosity for the tradition spreads far and wide, particularly regarding the meal served on the day.

And the world is right to be intrigued.  Thanksgiving foods are undeniably delicious as these Irish folks found out when they sampled a handful of favorites.

The butternut squash soup was a smash hit. The scalloped potatoes garnered respect. The turkey & cornbread stuffing with cranberry sauce were eloquently described as "a season in your mouth." And who doesn't agree that the filling in pecan pie is definitely better than the crust?  Read more...

Snapchat's Spectacles might have just ruined regular sunglasses

Look closely at the photo above. See anything unusual about my sunglasses?

No? Good, because it isn't a trick question. There is absolutely nothing special about my sunglasses. They're just regular sunglasses I picked up in Berlin a few months ago.

And yet, this morning, as I rode to work on a packed New York City subway train, someone mistook them for Snapchat Spectacles.

You probably shouldn't follow Stephen Colbert's turkey cooking advice

The Butterball Turkey Talk-Line is sure to be a saving grace for many cooking turkeys this Thanksgiving.

That is, as long as Stephen Colbert is not the "expert" on the other end of the line.

The goofy Late Show show host visited Butterball's call center in Naperville, Illinois to volunteer to help the nation's confused turkey chefs.

He provided callers with ridiculous gems such as, "Butterball hotline, let's butter your balls," "Cook it a long time," "You got ripped off. Birds usually come with thighs," and "You'll be fine as long as you don't take any of my advice."

This clip is only part one of Colbert's Butterball antics, so stay tuned. Read more...

This Thanksgiving, don't play nice—bring out your inner nasty woman instead

Every Thanksgiving celebration this year needs a nasty woman.

After all, this beloved tradition in American households is one that has, in form and function, generally put women in their place. They become the gracious hostess, greeting family members with a warm smile, and a hot meal. They stay out of dinner table disputes over politics, and take their meals standing up in the kitchen.

That may sound like a throwback, but plenty of women—liberals included—slip into a conventional role that makes everyone else feel comfortable.

No, voting machine hackers probably didn't steal this election for Trump

Two weeks after the presidential election, a whiff of scandal is all it takes to rattle voters, even if just for a moment.

A New York Magazine article published Tuesday night indicated there was a chance hackers had broken into voting machines in Wisconsin, altering the tally just enough to tip the state in favor of Trump.

If that was true, and if Clinton somehow pulled off a win in still-too-close-to-call Michigan, and if she was somehow able to challenge the results in Pennsylvania and pull off a win there, maybe she could win the election after all.

Patriots coach is not at all amused by Butt Fumble question

Stunning 'Zelda: Majora's Mask' fan film leaves you wishing for that Netflix series

The rumored Zelda series on Netflix may never actually happen, but Ember Lab makes the strongest case for it imaginable in Majora's Mask - Terrible Fate.

The fan-made short film is a stylized origin story that sets up the events of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, a Nintendo 64 classic. It's way too short for our liking, but manages to nail both the Zelda series and the dark tone of Majora in fewer than five minutes.

Facebook's ideals: As fake as its fakest news

After all, why should anyone be surprised by that recent report alluding to the potential of Facebook supporting Chinese censorship of their News Feed? They want to make inroads into China, where the service is currently banned. China is a huge potential market for them. The social network is a machine, and human users are its grist.
