An advanced weather satellite will launch to space Saturday: Watch it here

A satellite designed to revolutionize the way we forecast weather on Earth is set to launch to space Saturday.

The GOES-R satellite, developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is scheduled to launch to orbit atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket at 5:43 p.m. ET Saturday.

Once in space and operational, the satellite is expected to change the way we look at and forecast weather on our planet.

The satellite is one of four new geostationary spacecraft expected to launch between now and 2024 that will overhaul the way scientists look at the weather. In total, the program will cost about $10.83 billion. Read more...

Watch Prince surprise the late Sharon Jones with a spontaneous guitar solo

You know that feeling when Prince loves your song so much, he surprises you onstage with a spontaneous guitar solo? You almost certainly don't. But Sharon Jones did.

The beloved soul singer died of cancer on Friday at the age of 60, and fans are reminiscing about this June 2011 show in Paris. A few months prior, Prince had expressed admiration for Jones's song "When I Come Home." So, naturally, the late Purple One decided to pop in for a guitar solo on that same track.

And in a quintessentially Prince move, he rode to and from the stage on his bike.

The next frontier in wearables is helping couples conceive

The next round of wearables is good for more than tracking your steps.

Ava, a fertility wearable that helps couples conceive, raised $9.7 million in a Series A round this week. The round was led by Polytech Ventures, a European VC firm.

The FDA-approved medical device tracks measurements like pulse rate, breathing rate, skin temperature, movement and heat loss to identify the days of each month when a woman is most likely to get pregnant.

Women wear the device while sleeping. The technology detects at least five fertile days each month, far more than women are usually able to identify by taking their temperatures or taking ovulation tests. It costs $199.  Read more...

6 vegetarian Thanksgiving mains even carnivores crave

Thanksgiving, for all its stuffing and creamed corn, generally relegates vegetables to the side dishes.

After all, it's all about that turkey, right? Wrong, if you're a vegetarian or vegan (or just don't like turkey).

Here are six vegetarian main courses that are so hearty, flavorful and seasonal you might find your most meat-hungry friends forgoing the drumstick for another helping of the veggies.

1. Vegan pot pie

Image: facebook

This recipe from Minimalist Baker is so on point it's hard to say what its strongest suit is. It is vegan, it's savory, it's hearty and it comes together in an hour. It's also topped with pumpkin sage biscuits. But if that's too daunting, you can substitute any canned biscuit, pie dough or puff pastry.  Read more...

LinkedIn thinks campus recruiting hurts tech sphere diversity

Campus recruiting is a staple of hiring for tech companies, but the process feeds into the lack of diversity already plaguing the industry.

Elite colleges have their own diversity problems. And when companies only recruit from elite schools the lack of diversity is magnified.

That's what LinkedIn found when the professional network ditched campus recruiting in favor of regional recruitment events not limited to students at four-year colleges.

"Our goal is to create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce. When I looked at the process of traditional college recruiting, it wasn't necessarily in line with our company's vision to do just that," Tey Scott, LinkedIn's talent acquisition executive behind the change in strategy, told MashableRead more...

Massive South Korean protests calling for President Park ouster continue in Seoul

You call that a political protest, America? Take a look at how it's really done.

While the U.S. has been mired in its own post-election hangover and all the things it portends for 2017, South Korea's president has remained embroiled in one of the biggest political scandals in the country's history.

Protesters calling for the ouster of President Park Geun-hye took to the streets in October following revelations regarding her behind-the-scenes dealings with Choi Soon-sil, a relationship that some reports have linked to possible corruption in Park's administration.  Read more...

Trump tweeted about 'Hamilton' again and then deleted it

Yup, Donald Trump is still upset about Hamilton

Hours after he first took to Twitter to criticize the cast of Hamilton for delivering a message to Mike Pence, the President-elect once again had some harsh words for the actors. But, this time, he quickly deleted them.

"Very rude and insulting of Hamilton cast member to treat our great future V.P. Mike Pence to a theatre lecture," Trump wrote in a tweet that was promptly deleted Saturday evening.

He further criticized Hamilton actor Brandon Victor Dixon for not memorizing his lines — apparently referencing the now viral videos of the actor reading a statement directed at Pence, the vice president-elect, following a performance of the musical Friday night. Read more...

Alec Baldwin returns as a totally overwhelmed Donald Trump on 'Saturday Night Live'

Donald Trump knows Mike Pence is his ticket to not getting impeached.

At least, that was one of the best jokes of this week's Saturday Night Live cold open, which found Donald Trump (Alec Baldwin, back after being MIA last week) taking meetings about cabinet appointments and just being generally overwhelmed at the process of, you know, being president.

When a military general came in to meet with him about his "secret plan" to defeat ISIS, Trump quickly went to Google and Siri to hopefully provide him some answers about important military questions, like "What is ISIS?"  Read more...

Over the last few months I've had the sweet, sweet pleasure of rereading all the Harry Potter books.

Newly discovered spider looks just like a dried-up leaf

In the animal kingdom, sometimes the best survival strategy is to pretend to be something you're not — either to ambush unsuspecting prey or to convince predators that you're not very tasty.

And scientists recently discovered a spider that uses a unique masquerade to hide in plain sight. It is the only known spider to have a body that bears an uncanny resemblance to a dangling, partly dried-up leaf.

The find was reported in a new study, though the spider is yet to be described and assigned a species name.

The newfound costumed arachnid is in the Poltys genus in the orb spider family, which contains more than 3,000 species and one spider celebrity from children's fiction — an Araneus cavaticus was the barn spider Charlotte from the classic story "Charlotte's Web" (Harper and Brothers, 1952).  Read more...

Gorgeous color postcards capture life in 1899 Tunisia

Souc-el-Trouk, Tunis.

Image: Library of Congress

These color postcards of the sun-baked streets and Moorish architecture of Tunisia were created using the Photochrom process, a technique for applying realistic color to monochrome images that predated the spread of practical color photography.

Invented by a Swiss printer in the 1880s, the process began with coating a tablet of lithographic limestone with a light-sensitive emulsion, then exposing it to sunlight under a photo negative for up to several hours.

The emulsion would harden in proportion to the tones of the image and the less-hardened portions would be removed with a solvent, leaving a fixed lithographic image on the stone. Read more...

Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig making kitten jokes is the 'SNL' sketch you need

Here's Kate McKinnon and Saturday Night Live guest host Kristen Wiig playing with kittens. There are nods to Jill Stein, S&M (but not the way you think) and the musical, Cats. It's the best kind of SNL weirdness.

The two comics break again and again as they successfully out-funny one another with increasingly deranged kitten origin stories. It's the SNL sketch we need right now in this confused and embattled world.

How to get the best deal on Black Friday

Consumers spent $626.1 billion during the 2015 holiday season, snatching up Black Friday bargains and Cyber Monday goodies. Most shoppers on the day after Thanksgiving Day likely believed that it was worth getting up early, fighting crowds and waiting in long lines for the sales.

But are Black Friday sales really such a bargain? Use these tactics to find out.

This looks familiar

Most retailers get up to 30% of their annual revenues in the months of November and December, so they need to make you believe that you’re getting a good deal during the holidays. A 2016 NerdWallet study of Black Friday advertisements found that at least 32 retailers listed at least one product for the same price as in their 2015 ads. So if a sale price looks familiar, don’t buy the item without doing some research. Read more...

7 unexpectedly great moments from Season 7 of 'Gilmore Girls'

Fans probably haven't watched Season 7 of Gilmore Girls lately.

Due to a contract dispute with the CW, Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino was not involved with the beloved show's seventh season — and it showed.

The dialogue is slower. The plot lines are more contrived (Lorelai and Christopher in Paris, anyone?). Honestly, it's not really the Stars Hollow fans came to love — which is partially why people are so excited about the show's Netflix revival.

But despite Season 7's general mediocrity, it didn't all leave us cold. In fact, those 22 okay episodes gave us a few stellar moments — even though we'll always know Lane deserved better and that Rory should have just told Lucy she already knew Marty or whatever. Read more...

The wonderful, weird world of wizard rock

Paul DeGeorge was 26 when he quit his day job. He gave up a full salary, benefits and stock options to write songs about Harry Potter -- to tour and produce wizard rock full time.

A very niche genre of music, wizard rock describes tunes written about Harry Potter from the perspective of various characters in the stories, most of which are written by bands who do so exclusively. That was in 2004 -- to date, there are over 750 wizard rock bands, active or archived, and like the Harry Potter books and movies, in 2016 the music is thriving.

Back in 2000, DeGeorge read Harry Potter and began to think about what music the eponymous hero would identify with. Read more...

Alec Baldwin responds to Donald Trump's latest 'Saturday Night Live' attack

President-elect Donald J. Trump's ongoing one-sided feud with a weekly sketch comedy series took on a new wrinkle Sunday morning.

The incoming United States president bemoaned Saturday Night Live's "one-sided, biased" (presumably political) leanings in a Sunday tweet. He capped off the blast with a question: "Equal time for us?"

The tweet earned a response from Alec Baldwin, who impersonated Trump on SNL multiple times toward the end of the 2016 election. He revived that role on Saturday for the first time since Nov. 5, portraying a now-victorious Trump, overwhelmed by the enormity of his new role. Read more...

At least 115 people died Sunday in a train wreck in northern India, with rescuers still working to pull passengers from the mangled coaches.

An overnight passenger train rolled off the track around 3 a.m. local time near the city of Kanpur. The cause of the derailment is not yet known.

Ranchandra Tewari, a passenger on the Indore-Patna Express, said he was asleep when the train suddenly lurched and flung him to the floor. Tewari, who smashed his head, is one of at least 150 people injured in the wreck.

The 1972 Texas State Fair was bursting with beef, eggs and wild fashion

Image: Texas State Archives

In 1887, rival associations merged to create the Texas State Fair & Dallas Exposition, an annual occasion for the farmers, ranchers and business owners of the state to gather and show off their products, and for visitors to enjoy a wide selection of entertainment.

After a series of mishaps, the fairgrounds were sold to the city of Dallas, with an agreement to hold the annual exposition each fall.

More than a million people visited the fair in 1916, and auditoriums, a stadium, a monorail and a 52-foot cowboy statue were constructed as the event grew.

By 1968 the fair was drawing over three million annual visitors. Read more...

'Saturday Night Live' creates a safe space for life in Trump's America

Saturday Night Live has a happy surprise for the liberal elite: You don't have to swallow four years of a Donald Trump administration after all.

Just move to The Bubble, a planned community for like-minded free-thinkers — and absolutely no one else. It's a haven for those that wish to spend the next four years checked out and blissfully unaware of the toilet drain their country is circling.

If you watch this and think, 'Hey, that looks a lot like Brooklyn,' you're right. That's because The Bubble is literally Brooklyn, with an impenetrable dome built around it.

New York forms special police hate crime unit after Trump's win

As hate crime reports have spiked across the country following the election, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo promised to do something about it in his Sunday address Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church.

He pledged to form a special police unit to respond to the "explosion of hate crimes" in New York state and a legal defense fund for immigrants who fear prosecution under a Trump administration.

"With trained professionals we will investigate every incident and prosecute the perpetrator to the fullest extent of the law," he said after listing off chilling finds, such as KKK fliers on parked cars in Long Island, a swastika on the B Train in Manhattan, and a swastika with the words "Make America White Again" in Buffalo.  Read more...

Americans are now arguing about where incoming First Lady Melania Trump and First Kid Barron Trump will live, pushing stories of President-elect Donald Trump's $25 million Trump University settlement and his controversial cabinet appointments further into the background.

This latest story started with a New York Post report that Melania and Barron would continue to reside in Trump Tower in New York City with a source telling the Post, “Melania is extremely close to Barron, and they have become closer during the campaign. 'Fantastic Beasts' can't conjure 'Harry Potter' magic at the box office

Don't break out the champagne for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them just yet.

Hollywood's first return to Wizarding World of J.K. Rowling in five years posted an estimated $75 million at the domestic box office. It's a fine start, especially accompanied by a reported $143.3 million in foreign sales.

Still, Warner Bros. ought to pay attention.

Fantastic Beasts is on track to be the lowest Wizarding World opening to date. It's closest to — and could conceivably surpass, once final tallies are in — Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which opened with $77.1 million in July 2007. Read more...
