Let's take a moment to appreciate to the pathetic Cleveland Browns and their sad-sack fans

In this most challenging and tumultuous of years, Americans can still count on one thing: The Cleveland Browns sucking at NFL football.

The Browns lost (again) Thursday night, this time 28-7 to the very mediocre Baltimore Ravens. Thus, the franchise defined by its tradition of failure reached unprecedented depths by beginning a season with an 0-10 record for the very first time. The losing streak extends back to last season, too.

Just how bad is it? The Cleveland Browns haven't won a game since the notorious Johnny Manziel (remember him?) was their starting quarterback. Meanwhile, Browns fans are creating slapstick lowlights of their own.  Read more...

The 2022 World Cup is already a disaster, and now you won't be able to drink alcohol

As if the 2022 World Cup wasn't enough of a debacle already, officials have announced what sports fans often fear most: No booze allowed.

That's right. Public consumption of alcohol will be banned at the tournament in Qatar. That includes drinking inside stadiums and outside on the streets, according to the officials governing the 2022 World Cup, which said this week that providing alcohol in public is against the "values and traditions" of their culture.

But prohibition is hardly the lone fiasco of the 2022 World Cup.

The art of sleuthing: Can detective skills be taught?

The last time your significant other somehow “just knew” about your eyebrow-raising coffee “meeting” with an especially attractive coworker, you probably wondered – when did he or she become such a Nancy Drew?

There’s a common misconception that some people are simply born with a talent for sleuthing – whether to uncover infidelity or to solve more sinister mysteries. But the truth is that many of the skills that make a successful sleuth can actually be taught, and therefore, they can be learned.

It doesn’t hurt, however, to have a curious predisposition.

In TBS’s upcoming new show, Search Party, a young girl named Dory flexes her sleuthing muscles to solve a vexing mystery – the disappearance of a former college acquaintance. Read more...

Facebook says it's not a media company, but it just bought a tool for publishers

Facebook has repeatedly insisted that it's not a media company. On Friday, it bought one of the most powerful Facebook-focused pieces of software that media companies use to`do their jobs.

CrowdTangle, a tool that publishers use to track how their stories spread through the internet, said Friday that it had been acquired by Facebook for an undisclosed sum.

Facebook already has its own tools that let publishers track how their pages perform, but CrowdTangle can track other sites, like Facebook-owned Instagram, Twitter and Reddit.

You can blame CrowdTangle if you feel like news sites often post the same stories. When its software tells publishers that a topic is trending, many outlets scramble to cover it at once. Read more...

Facebook is now saying we're all dead

Many living Facebook users were "memorialized" Friday afternoon, meaning the social network claimed they were dead.

You just can't make this stuff up.

It's unclear why this happened, but the issue affected a variety of users — including the author of this post:

"We hope people who love Damon will find comfort in the things others share to remember and celebrate his life," a new header said at the top of my profile page, and several others that I checked.

Several people I know on Facebook are seeing the same thing: pic.twitter.com/f1Si14T7b5

John Legend's new music video reminds us that we need more love

A little love goes a long way during trying times, and John Legend's new music video for "Love Me Now" is a stirring reminder of the love that exists and is thriving despite pain, all across the globe.

Director Nabil Elderkin shot scenes of solidarity with folks at Standing Rock, families in Northern Iraqi refugee camps, Pulse Nightclub shooting victims in Orlando, people in the Dominican Republic and Legend with his own family.

In a message on Instagram, Legend explained his disappointment in the election results and clarified the unintentional timing of the music video's release. "But in this time of conflict and uncertainty, it's clear that we all need more love. I find it in my family and in my music," he wrote

"Embracing my family has made today full of love and light despite the bad news. But it's also important that we show love and empathy to people who may not look like us or live like us. Those who are marginalized and rejected, feared and left behind," he said before inviting fans to celebrate love with the hashtag #lovemenow and a photo.  Read more...

Silicon Valley billionaire slums it with government job

Billionaire Gawker-destroyer Peter Thiel has officially joined President-elect Donald Trump's transition team, according to a news release from the Trump team.

The PayPal founder and Facebook board member supported Trump throughout the presidential race and pledged to donate $1.25 million to his campaign in October.

The pairing makes sense: A president-elect who bucked tradition and refused to give the press access to his schedule or movements once being elected to office, and a billionaire who used his near-limitless resources to bankrupt a news website over a decade-old grudge. Trump, of course, has expressed hostility toward the media throughout his campaign, not just since winning the election on Tuesday.  Read more...

A guide to marijuana microdosing: How tiny hits could be the future of weed

Given the tumultuous and traumatic past few days, anyone would be forgiven for rolling up something large and potent for the weekend. However, a new marijuana mantra has been emerging as the drug has become increasingly legal and that is: less is more.

Microdosing, the practice of taking tiny amounts of marijuana for all the benefits and less of the side effects, is being increasingly embraced - and it's as much by professionals as professional stoners.

Weed received an almost universal endorsement across the country this month, with eight of nine ballots proposing legalized medical or recreational use given a "hell yes" by voters. Only Arizona rejected it recreationally, while California, Massachusetts, Maine and Nevada made it legal for anyone over the age of 21. Arkansas, Florida, Montana, North Dakota approved medicinal use.  Read more...

Hey, Facebook: Social media really can change what people believe

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg doesn't believe that fake news on his social network influenced the election.

But recent findings from the Pew Research Center suggest the opposite is true, as 20 percent of social media users say they've changed their stance on a political issue because of something they saw on sites like Facebook. The shift was usually pessimistic.

"People who said they had changed their minds on [the presidential] candidates often said that social media pointed their opinion in a more negative direction," Pew research associate Monica Anderson said in a post about the survey that was published Monday. Read more...

5 ways that President Trump could affect your student loans

In an Oct. 13 speech in Columbus, Ohio, Trump outlined the basics of his views on student debt, tuition rates, administrative “bloat,” income-based repayment and loan forgiveness.

“Students should not be asked to pay more on their loans than they can afford,” Trump said. “The debt should not be an albatross around their necks for the rest of their lives.”

China may leave the U.S. behind on climate change due to Trump

President-elect Donald J. Trump will enter office on Jan. 20, 2017 with an agenda that includes dismantling President Barack Obama's environmental actions, particularly when it comes to global warming. Environmentalists are gearing up for a fierce fight against him, and it's easy to see why.

Trump is set to become the world's only leader who does not believe human-caused global warming exists.

In just his first 100 days, he is seeking to green light the Keystone XL Pipeline, a project Obama rejected in 2015, as well as redirect climate aid the U.S. gives to other nations. In doing so, Trump may hand over the mantle of global leadership on combatting climate change to a country he aims to compete more fiercely with: China. Read more...

You will be watched by Donald Trump

America in 2017 will begin to experience life under Big Brother Donald Trump.

The president-elect is still a little more than two months away from having the United States's massive security apparatus at his fingertips, but it's not difficult to imagine a spike in domestic surveillance after he sits down in the Oval Office.

Trump plainly laid out his thoughts on surveillance during the campaign and it is terrifying.

He said he'd like to restore parts of the Patriot Act — passed in the aftermath of 9/11 — that would allow for bulk data collection. A year ago, he said he wants "surveillance of these people that are coming in," though he wasn't clear about to whom he was referring.  Read more...

Trump won this election with turnout at a 20-year low

It wasn't just the result of the presidential election that was unexpected — a surprisingly large number of people didn't even show up or cast ballots.

Voter turnout in 2016 looks likely to be around 55 percent, based on CNN election numbers that are still being counted. That's the lowest since 1996, when just 49 percent of eligible voters showed up for the presidential race between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole.

The United States Elections Project calculates there were more than 231.5 million eligible voters this year. Of those people, preliminary tabulations show about 127 million voted in 2016, meaning that well over 100 million people sat this one out. Read more...

As America came to grips with the upset electoral victory of Donald J. Trump for president, Secretary of State John Kerry — himself a former presidential candidate — was as far away from Washington as humanly possible.

According to the State Department, Kerry is also planning to travel to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. With these travels, Kerry also becomes the first secretary of state to set foot on both of the world's land-based ice sheets, having visited Greenland in 2015. The 4 ways to see 'Billy Lynn's,' and where to catch all 120 frames per second

LOS ANGELES — No one pushes the technological envelope in Hollywood quite like Ang Lee, the Oscar-winning director of 3D marvel Life of Pi. With his new movie Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, Lee embarked on another ambitious challenge, shooting the film at 120 frames per second — five times higher than the normal frame rate.

While Billy Lynn has received mixed reviews, critics have admired Lee's bold decision to make movie history. The extra frames create a smooth, crystalline hyper-reality and depth of field that some people love and others loathe — much like 4K and UHD television. (Peter Jackson doubled the frame rate to 48 fps for The Hobbit, but this ... this is next-level). Read more...

Facebook has discriminated against you, and it's not going to stop

Online advertising's been built around the ability to know exactly who you are. Are you a guitar-playing, cat-owning botanist? You'll get served ads for guitar-shaped catnip hedge grow kits. Google, Twitter, and all other digital platforms where an advertisement can be served—with Facebook leading the charge—want to know everything about you, usually already do, and use that information to convince marketers that the ads you'll see are perfectly targeted to whoever you are (or aren't).

That's an intense stripe of power. And maybe that's fine—even, potentially, helpful—when advertisers are dividing people by shopping habits, or hobbies. But when it comes to identifiers like race or ethnicity, that targeting can devolve into discrimination that cements harmful societal norms. At worst, it can perpetuate blatant prejudice that can affect critical issues in our lives, like housing and hiring. Read more...

Alibaba sells a record-breaking $17.8 billion on Singles Day

China's e-commerce giant Alibaba moved $17.8 billion in sales during its Singles Day sale on Friday, smashing its own records.

Perry, who was a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton throughout the election cycle, posted a photo to Instagram of her own $10,000 donation alongside a poignant open letter.

The singer credited Planned Parenthood with teaching her about sexual health when she had no other resources.

"Planned Parenthood educated me on my body and my reproductive health, so that I could focus on my dreams and using my voice until I knew the timing was right for me to make a plan to have a family," she wrote. Read more...

Students escort girl to class after she reports racial harassment on campus

Nearly 300 students showed up to escort Baylor University student Natasha Nkhama to class on Wednesday after she reported being pushed and called the N-word while walking around campus.

In a video posted to Twitter by Nkhama's friend Jaileene Maite, Nkhama described the attack.

"On my way to class, this guy went out of his way to bump into me and ... shove me off the sidewalk," she said. "He said 'no n*ggers allowed on the sidewalk'."

"And I was just shocked," she added. "Like, I had no words."

Nkhama also said that when confronted by a nearby student, her attacker replied "Like what ... I'm just trying to make America great again." Read more...

We've endured a long, hard political slog this week, so it's only fair that we get a bit of respite this weekend. And that has arrived in the form of comedian Dave Chappelle hosting Saturday Night Live.

Ever since quitting his Comedy Central show years ago, Chappelle has remained elusive, often popping up unexpectedly to deliver a stand-up routine in small clubs around the U.S.

But along with his new, mysterious movements, something else has changed about Chappelle: he's now as buff as a UFC fighter.

Uninspiring design aside, Google's new Pixel and Pixel XL are fantastic smartphones that really give the iPhone a run for its money, especially when it comes to taking photos and videos.

Earlier this month, Adrian Ludwig, the director of Android security at Google, told Motherboard at a security conference that the Pixels are as secure as iPhones.

"For almost all threat models [the Pixels and iPhone] are nearly identical in terms of their platform-level capabilities," Ludwig said.

Well, so much for that. A group of Chinese white hat hackers managed to hack a Pixel in 60 seconds at the PwnFest hacking competition that took place in Seoul on Friday, according to The Register. Read more...

Airbnb ad touts new anti-discrimination pledge

Airbnb wants to remind everyone that it takes discrimination very seriously.

The home rental service is launching a flashy new ad campaign to show off its anti-prejudice efforts after a series of reports alleging racism among its hosts caused the company a public relations headache.

The 75-second ad involves a montage of ultra-zoomed faces of a diverse range of people sliding like a kaleidoscope into one another as diversity-affirming text flashes sporadically across the screen.

The commercial's title, "Accept," is meant to be a play on the pink confirmation button for bookings on the site, which is featured in the closing shot. Read more...

Scary videos show GoPro Karma drones plummeting from the sky

If you missed it on Tuesday because you were too busy watching the U.S. presidential election, here it is again: GoPro is recalling 2,500 of its recently launched Karma drones. In other words, all of them.

GoPro said "in a very small number of cases, Karma units lost power during operation." And there have been no reports of injuries or property damage. GoPro's urging all Karma owners to return their drones and get a refund.

Though the company's working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for the recall, there will (inevitably) be some customers who refuse to comply, just as some people refused to give up their Galaxy Note7s. Read more...
