How accurate is Netflix's 'The Crown'?

LONDON — Move aside Lady Mary, the leading lady on everyone's lips right now is Queen Elizabeth II.

The nation watched Her Majesty celebrate her 90th birthday this year, but now the world is getting a glimpse into the early days of HRH's reign with the release of Netflix's transfixing new show The Crown

The famously private royal family has always endeavoured, successfully or not,  to keep its family squabbles and intrigues out of the spotlight. But with a family as well known as the royals and a public thirsty for gossip, rumours abound about what really went on behind closed doors at the palace

Right now, The Crown is giving us the through-the-keyhole view of the royals we've been yearning for. And naturally the question on everyone's lips is: Did all of that really happen?  Read more...

Nutella fans, rejoice: the 'Nutella burger' has arrived

If you really, really, really love Nutella, listen up: Fly to Italy, head to a McDonald's and chow down on a Nutella burger.

The "Sweety con Nutella," which was announced by McDonald's Italia in a Facebook post on Thursday, does not include an actual hamburger patty (phew). Instead, it's a hearty helping of hazelnut spread sandwiched between two glistening buns. Sweet!

For now, the treat is only available in Italy. But if you want to create your own, just put some Nutella between some buns. Delicious, no?.

Australia to send its own refugees to Trump's America

Although its president-elect has strongly denounced refugees and Muslims, Australia will send asylum seekers to the U.S as part of a one-off resettlement deal.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced that asylum seekers interned in Australia's regional processing centres would be eligible for the new program, with women, children and families to be prioritised.

The two centres on Nauru and Manus Island in Papua New Guinea are part of a system set up in 2001 to send anyone who arrived by boat seeking asylum offshore while their refugee claim was assessed. The program was intended to deter further "irregular" arrivals. Read more...

'Silicon Valley' stars say they were harassed by Trump supporters

The guys immediately wanted to argue about his opposition to Trump, Nanjiani wrote, but when he tried to end the conversation, the situation escalated.

Acer's ultra-light Swift 7 is a formidable foe to Apple's MacBook

The push to make the thinnest, lightest, most portable laptop is proving fruitful. Case in point: the Acer Swift 7.

According to Acer, the Swift 7 is the thinnest notebook PC in the world. When closed, it wouldn't be impossible to mistake it for a tablet with a keyboard attached, only thinner. At least, that's the case with my tried-and-true iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard Cover combo.

While there's more to a laptop than its size, let's start there.

Razor thin

The Swift 7 doesn't have a tapered design, where it's thicker in the back and slowly gets thinner towards the front where the trackpad is. Some manufacturers use this design technique to claim an unrealistic number for the thinness of their laptops. Read more...

'Saturday Night Live' takes it easy on us with powerful Hillary Clinton opener

All eyes were on Saturday Night Live following Tuesday's election, with viewers curious how the show would handle Donald Trump's win. Many wondered whether Alec Baldwin would make another appearance as the President-elect in full-on gloat mode, or whether the show would find a new Trump surrogate now that he's poised to assume the mantle of Commander in Chief.

In the end, the show did perhaps the only humane thing after such a contentious campaign (and the raw feelings it provoked on both sides): turn the spotlight away from Trump to focus on Kate McKinnon's Hillary Clinton, who performed a poignant rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."  Read more...

'Fantastic Beasts' reviews are in: What critics think of J.K. Rowling's first screenplay

LOS ANGELES — Magic is finicky, isn't it?

According to all our modern wizarding lore, be it Harry Potter, Doctor Strange or otherwise, you have to nail the incantations, swirl your hands just right and land the flourish perfectly to make the spell work.

Does Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them do the trick?

Ehhhhhh, yes and no.

The sight of the beasts themselves is indeed fantastic, as is the lavish '20s New York that director David Yates presents, according to the first wave of critics who published reviews Saturday night (many of whom appear to be Harry Potter experts standing in for their respective outlets' regular reviewers). Dave Chappelle tackles Donald Trump in hilarious and heartfelt 'SNL' monologue

Alec Baldwin's Donald Trump was conspicuously absent from this week's Saturday Night Live, with the show's cold open instead focusing on Kate McKinnon's Hillary Clinton, who performed a poignant rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."

The show left the political jabs to host Dave Chappelle, who opened his monologue by noting, "I didn't know that Donald Trump was gonna win the election — I did suspect it. It seemed like Hillary was doing well in the polls, and yet...

"I know the whites. You guys aren't as full of surprises as you used to be."

He continued, "America's done it, we've actually elected an internet troll as our president. The whites are furious…I haven't seen white people this mad since the O.J. verdict." Read more...

'SNL' just gave us the 'Walking Dead'-'Chappelle's Show' crossover of our dreams

At first, Dave Chappelle wasn't planning on reviving any of his Chappelle's Show characters on Saturday Night Live, but then The Walking Dead went and killed Glenn, and all bets were off.

Ten years after the iconic comedy series left the air, Chappelle dusted off some of his most beloved Chappelle's Show personalities as part of a spoof of the zombie show.

Chappelle, dressed as Negan, lords over a lineup of potential victims including Tyrone Biggums, Lil Jon, black white supremacist Clayton Bigsby (sporting a "Make America Great Again" hat, natch), Silky Johnson and white anchorman Chuck Taylor. Read more...

37 hidden clues I only spotted when I reread 'Harry Potter' in my 20s

LONDON — It's really no big shock that J.K. Rowling went on to write crime fiction.

Some people — including me — were a bit surprised at first with the route she took after finishing the Harry Potter series, but in hindsight it makes beautiful sense.

Each and every Harry Potter book has a mystery at its core. Despite the fantasy backdrop and the themes of adventure and coming-of-age that run through the series, every individual story is packed with the elements you might normally find in a crime tale: there are red herrings, countless clues, detective work, and normally at least one major twist or revelation at the conclusion. So your state legalized marijuana: 6 things to know

Recreational marijuana won big at the polls on Tuesday, with California, Massachusetts, and Nevada approving those laws and Maine’s measure leaning toward yes, tripling the U.S. population living in pot-friendly states.

The laws allow adults to grow, consume, and give away marijuana — but the patchwork of laws and marijuana’s federal status mean that it can be tricky to stay on the right side of the law.

So if your state has recently given the green light to light up, here are a few things you should know:

1. Cannabis on campus

Because most colleges get federal money, and pot is still illegal under federal law, universities — private and public — will probably prohibit you from using pot anywhere on campus. Washington State University wrote a very direct post on its website in 2012 when recreational marijuana was legalized for individuals 21 and older. “What will change on campus?” it asks. “Essentially nothing.” University policies there and at other schools prohibiting marijuana remain in place. When Native American activists took control of Alcatraz for 18 months

1969

John Trudell, a Sioux activist, looks out across San Francisco Bay from a teepee on Alcatraz Island.

Image: AP

On March 8, 1964, a small group of Sioux made landfall on Alcatraz Island, which had been abandoned as a prison the previous year. They invoked the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie in reclaiming the surplus federal property as Native land, and spent a few hours singing and drumming before being removed by federal marshals.

That occupation was small and brief, but was noticed by Native Americans across the country who were suffering under federal policies of relocation and termination, by which the government was encouraging Native Americans to leave reservations for cities and seeking to end federal recognition of tribal sovereignty. Scarlett Johansson kicks ass in the first 'Ghost in the Shell' trailer

From manga to anime to star-powered Hollywood blockbuster, the first look at director Rupert Sanders' Ghost in the Shell is here.

The adaptation controversially stars Scarlett Johansson as The Major, a human-cyborg construct that fights the worst of the criminal underworld as the head of an elite task force, Section 9. Even in a post-Doctor Strange world, this one looks pretty trippy.

Ghost in the Shell arrives in theaters on March 31, 2017.

Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock get real about the U.S. election on 'SNL'

Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock seem to have this whole "U.S. presidential election upset" pretty well figured out.

Rock made a surprise appearance on this week's Chappelle-hosted Saturday Night Live to participate in a gentle-yet-firm skewering of Super Tuesday. Their target? Liberals that gripped tightly to misplaced certainty that Hillary Clinton had the election buttoned up. In other words: white privilege.

Dave Chappelle and Kate McKinnon had a 'derotic' make out session on 'SNL'

Kenan Thompson tried so hard to play his bartender straight in this Saturday Night Live sketch. But in the end, he broke — and broke hard.

In Thompson's defense, it's tough to keep a straight face when Dave Chappelle and Kate McKinnon are sitting a few feet away, drunkenly smashing their tongues together.

The short-lived lust story of Sheila Sovage and Corey Dipships isn't necessarily good SNL, but Thompson's break — so joyful and unrestrained — is a winner.

7 smoky beers to challenge your taste buds

Smoked beer — Rauchbier in German —traditionally acquires its particular flavor from heating malted barley over an open fire, though craft brewers these days are finding many ways of imparting a smokiness in their brews. Often evocative of bacon, bonfires, and/or whisky, it’s one of the more divisive genres of beer out there.

Here are seven eclectic examples to try. All achieve smokiness in different ways, and all with excellent results.

Monday's supermoon will be the biggest and brightest until 2034

A full moon the likes of which we haven't seen for almost 70 years will grace skies around the world on Monday night.

The "supermoon — so named because the moon will be both in its full phase and at its closest point to Earth during its orbit at the same time — will be the closest of its kind since 1948.

This cosmic coincidence won't happen again until 2034, according to NASA.

So, how can you see it?

Basically, just look up.

From Sunday night through Monday night, the moon will be big, bright and shining just about 216,486 miles from Earth's surface. If you have good weather, you should be able to spot it.  Read more...

New Zealanders flee tsunami after powerful earthquake

Residents on New Zealand's eastern coastline fled their homes early Monday morning after powerful earthquakes triggered a tsunami.

Officials urged residents in Wellington, Christchurch, the Chatham Islands and other coastal areas to move inland or seek higher ground after a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck shortly after midnight local time.

A magnitude-6.5 temblor hit shortly after about halfway between Wellington and Christchurch, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

Cars clogged the roads and tsunami sirens blared on New Zealand's South Island as waves approached the northeastern coast. Emergency officials warned of tsunami waves as high as 5 meters, or over 16 feet, along certain stretches of South Island.  Read more...

Hillary's weak economic messaging is to blame for President Trump

In the aftermath of Donald Trump's electoral college victory, many on the left and around the world are looking for someone to blame, but it might have been the messaging.

Fingers have pointed in many directions. Some have blamed the Democratic National Committee for conspiring to side with Hillary Clinton against Bernie Sanders. Some have blamed women voters for not turning out in larger numbers. Some have blamed the media for giving Trump free coverage.

However, the fault may lie with Clinton's inability to convince key voters in those valuable swing states that she understood their economic anxieties and that she would have their backs if they elected her commander-in-chief. Read more...

Amy Adams' alien 'Arrival' can't top 'Doctor Strange' at the box office

Marvel has another November hit on its hands.

For the second weekend in a row, the trippy Doctor Strange is #1 at the domestic box office, with an estimated $43 million. It's a #2-peat as well for Trolls, which hangs on in second place with an estimated $35.1 million.

In both cases, the continuing success can be credited to lingering interest and repeat viewingsStrange ticket sales dropped just 49 percent over the weekend — which is the lower end of normal for movies in their second weekend.

After opening with an almost identical box office total to Marvel's only other November release to date, Thor: The Dark World — $85.7 million then versus $85.1 million now — Strange is looking like the bigger hit. The Sorcerer Supreme's $43 million second weekend is far ahead of Thor's $36.6 million in weekend two. Read more...
