Man instantly regrets driving close to a hungry hungry hippo

A man driving his truck across a bridge made the terrible mistake of trusting that a hippo was friendly toward humans.

Wikus Ceronie, a 26-year-old welding inspector, was crossing a bridge in Kruger National Park during a drive from Mozambique to South Africa on Friday. Ceronie tells Latest Sightings that he noticed the hippo on the bridge, but assumed that it was used to humans because there were people walking in the nearby vicinity. Ceronie was very wrong.

Almost immediately upon noticing the truck, the hippo charged the vehicle, leaving the front end of the truck with significant damage. The hippo briefly tried to bite the truck, then walked away as if nothing ever happened. Read more...

NASA unveils 'food bars' to feed astronauts on long space journeys

Your average granola bar simply won't cut it for a Mars-bound astronaut.

NASA food scientists are in the process of developing a new "food bar" (that's seriously what they call it) that astronauts will be able to eat for breakfast every morning while on missions to deep space destinations like Mars or the moon.

At the moment, NASA astronauts have a variety of good tasting — but mostly questionable looking — options for breakfast and other meals on the International Space Station. If NASA crews start flying to the red planet as planned sometime in the 2030s, however, that variety won't be viable.  Read more...

San Francisco transit hack hints at possible attacks to come

The start of this news story reads like a typical vaguely futuristic plot from a movie that isn't hard to imagine coming to a theater near you.

First, a hacker breaks into the fare system of the San Francisco Municipal Railway on Friday. Unable to immediately regain control of the system, railway officials allow free rides until further notice. Then the hacker demands  to leave them alone, though officials release a statement on Sunday to say the situation is "contained," and things are soon mostly back to normal.

Baby tries yogurt for the first time, is instantly repulsed

It wasn't long ago that this baby tried broccoli for the first time and realized the world is a cruel place. So when her parents offered her a new food to sample for the first time, they figured yogurt might be a safe bet.

Well, perhaps this baby already has a refined palate because she was totally repulsed by her first taste.

If just one spoonful was enough to make her gag, sampling new snacks should continue to be a pretty entertaining adventure.

This ramen joint is an introverted foodie's paradise

Embrace your inner #ForeverAlone.

Ichiran Ramen is a Japan-based restaurant chain famous for its unique dining style. Customers eat alone, partitioned into individual sections that separate them from other diners and the staff, and orders are taken by filling out a form, all in order to limit human interaction.

And now, there's good news for New Yorkers: Last month, the introverted foodie's paradise finally opened a shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Ichiran was founded in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1960. As explained by Timeline, the chain believes that eating solo "helps people focus on their food," as it "eliminates the need for exchanging saccharine pleasantries with servers or companions."  Read more...

Large parts of West Antarctic Ice Sheet could collapse 'in our lifetimes'

Scientists say they discovered the "troubling" reason why a massive iceberg splintered off one of West Antarctica's largest glaciers last year, and why this may not bode well for the future of the world's coastal megacities.

Warm ocean waters appear to have melted Pine Island Glacier from underneath, causing a deep subsurface crack that split the ice from the inside out, Ohio State University researchers found.

The 20-mile-long rift eventually broke through the surface and cleaved off a 225-square-mile iceberg in July 2015, according to their study, published Monday in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. Read more...

NFL Dance Party: This LeBron James impression is the week's best celebration

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. scored a pair of touchdowns in Sunday's win at Cleveland. Naturally, he channeled one of the city's biggest stars — LeBron James — while celebrating one of those touchdowns.

The best part? He actually busted out the James impression twice.

Beckham returned a punt for a touchdown in the fourth quarter — displaying James' classic chalk toss and "The Silencer" — but the score was called back after a holding penalty. So when Beckham found the endzone again later in the quarter, he made sure the James celebration received its due diligence.  Read more...

Hot 'Deals' are the fake news of online shopping, and you're all buying it

Want to understand the problem of fake news? Want to do it while seeing how much money you just got schemed out of by Google, Amazon, or Facebook? Then take one look at the online holiday shopping bonanza: Massive corporations, peddling questionable information, to a public without sufficient tools to help separate the good from the bad.

Black Friday just gave way to Cyber Monday, and now, the internet's lousy with "deals." Consumers have already spent over $5.3 billion online this shopping season, according to Adobe (which doesn't even account for weekend or Monday spending, which Adobe expects to add on another $3.4 billion). But how many people spent that money under the guise of getting a "great" deal, only to get an average (or even downright bad) deal?  Read more...

Here's the school newspaper's interview with the Ohio State attacker

The young man identified by officials as responsible for Monday's attack at Ohio State, Abdul Razak Ali Artan, had spoken with school's student newspaper three months ago as he was adjusting to life on campus.

The interview, part of The Lantern's "Humans of Ohio State" section, was originally published in the Aug. 25, 2016 issue. In the piece, Artan talks about his Muslim faith, being new at Ohio State and how he felt Muslims were portrayed.

Noting the interview took place on his first day on campus, Artan seemed overwhelmed, comparing the campus to his previous school, Columbus State (where he reportedly graduated Cum Laude in May 2016), by saying, "This place is huge and I don't even know where to pray." Read more...

NYU's plan to make college cheaper: Get students to live with senior citizens

New York University is thinking outside the average dorm to make college more affordable.

To alleviate some of the costs of living, the private university is launching a pilot program to pair students with older New York City residents with extra room in their apartments.

Some are calling the housing option "grandma's spare room," as The Guardian reported. Students will be living with senior citizens and other residents near the university who may be struggling financially, but have extra space. #DefineAboriginal shows what it's like to be Indigenous in the face of racism

Australian far-right politician Pauline Hanson has been quite the know-it-all recently.

Last week, she claimed the Great Barrier Reef is fine, then on Monday night, she decided that "there's no definition to an Aboriginal" and a person could be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander by marrying one.

It's part of her rhetoric around lobbying to repeal the country's Racial Discrimination Act, 18C, which makes it illegal to "offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate" someone due to their race or ethnicity.

But with grace, a touch of sass and a large serving of reality, Indigenous Australians have responded with a hashtag: #DefineAboriginal. Read more...

Such is the case of Gable Tostee, now sometimes known as Eric Thomas, who was found not guilty in October of the murder of New Zealander Warriena Wright on Australia's Gold Coast.

Dubbed the "Tinder Murder" after the pair met on the dating app, the case has lived on far beyond the verdict, kept alive in no small part by the more than 5,000 members of the "Gable Tostee and Warriena Wright case discussion" Facebook page.

Now anyone in India can book an Uber without downloading its app

Uber is making it easier for more people in India to book cabs on its network.

The Silicon Valley company announced today that its "Dial an Uber" feature, which lets people book a cab without downloading the app, is now available across all 29 cities in India where it operates. The company had begun testing this feature in India in August.

With this feature, a user can book a cab by visiting dial.uber.com website on their phone. They do not have to create an Uber account to book a cab, as the feature only requires them to provide their phone number for authentication. They can settle the payment in cash at the end of the trip. (However, that might be a little difficult for many right now). Read more...

Daily Mail tweet about 'Britain's best looking couple' instantly becomes meme

LONDON — If you ask the internet something, you might not always get the answer you were expecting.

The question "Is THIS Britain's best looking couple?," which was tweeted on Monday night by the Daily Mail's @Femail account alongside photos of a couple from Essex, is a classic example of this — they were probably expecting a "yes" or "no" type reply, but the whole thing quickly got a lot more... well unconventional.

How the Aussie star of 'Barry' learnt self-acceptance with help from Obama

What do a 24-year-old kid from Perth, Australia, and the 44th President of the United States have in common?

Quite a bit actually, if you ask the Aussie actor of Netflix's upcoming biopic Barry.

Like the young Barack Obama, who he plays, Devon Terrell is on a journey of self-discovery. And thanks to Obama, he's learning a lot.

Barry centres on the life of Obama as a young Columbia University student in racially-charged New York of the early '80s. Emigrating from Indonesia in 1971, the child of a white American woman and a Kenyan man, Obama deals with issues of belonging in Barry — based partly on his account of the period in the memoir Dreams From My Father.     Read more...

7 extremely useful sites and apps to help you organize in Trump's America

It's been less than a month since President-elect Donald Trump's victory, and everywhere you look, people are struggling to organize.

You can see a lot of it happening on our favorite social platforms. On Facebook, it comes in the form of repetitive pleas to "Call your legislator!" On Twitter, people retweet every 140-character nugget of pseudo-profundity they can find.

It can be confusing to know what to do when so much of our democracy is at stake, but a few new sites and apps (and even a couple of old ones) can help activists and concerned Americans pave a manageable path forward. Read more...

War between Reddit CEO and The_Donald rages on

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has expressed regret for abusing his power by editing comments made about him on the site by Donald Trump supporters, but that's not preventing subreddit users and moderators from calling for his resignation.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Huffman, who co-founded Reddit with Alexis Ohanian in 2005, admitted that changing abusive posts about him to mention the moderators of Reddit's biggest pro-Trump subreddit, r/the_donald, wasn't exactly a good idea.

People think this video of a New Yorker smashing a windshield is fake

Or did he?

The video shared to Twitter shows an encounter with an apparently enraged motorist who takes a bat to the windshield of the 21-year-old social media star's car.

California is cracking down on cow farts

California is taking its fight against global warming to the farm. The nation's leading agricultural state is now targeting greenhouse gases produced by dairy cows and other livestock.

Despite strong opposition from farmers, Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation in September that for the first time regulates heat-trapping gases from livestock operations and landfills.

Cattle and other farm animals are major sources of methane, a greenhouse gas many times more potent than carbon dioxide as a heat-trapping gas. Methane is released when they belch, pass gas and make manure.

Intense video shows a very angry bear being rescued from a septic tank

A video of a bear being rescued from a septic tank in Bolu, Turkey, has surfaced online, showing the fury that rises when Mother Nature gets trapped.

AwesomenessTV's 'Foursome' gets Season 2 release date, trailer

LOS ANGELES — Foursome is headed back to YouTube Red.

The AwesomenessTV show, which debuted in March, will premiere its second season on YouTube's streaming service on Dec. 6.

The show follows Andie (Jenn McAllister known on YouTube as JennxPenn), a sophomore who struggles with dating —  largely because of her overprotective older brother Alec, played by Logan Paul. So, she turns to her three best friends (Rickey Thompson as Dakota, Meghan Falcone as Courtney, and Brooke Markham as Imogen) to help her navigate the highs and lows of high school.

Susanne Daniels, YouTube's Global Head of Original Content, has touted the show as one of the platform's most popular offerings. Like other streaming services, YouTube Red doesn't release its viewership numbers. However, the platform reported that the pilot episode of Foursome has generated more than 5.2 million views since its release earlier this year. Read more...

These alternative Christmas cards will stop you in your tracks

LONDON — As Christmas draws nearer, Christmas cards are beginning to land on doormats up and down the country.

One charity has created a series of alternative Christmas cards to remind people of the 2016 events that forced millions of people from their homes.

International humanitarian medical charity Doctors of the World launched its arresting collection of Christmas cards, which paint a more sombre picture than the usual nativity and festive scenes emblazoned on our cards.

Lyft will give you an exact price now, not just an estimate

Lyft is saying goodbye to estimates.

Lyft will tell consumers the exact price of their rides with a new feature launching Tuesday.

The upfront price information will be similar to the locked-in prices users see before they agree to an UberPool or Lyft Line ride. Lyft has provided price estimates for a while, but its new feature will be the first time the app is able to guarantee a price for regular Lyft rides.

Uber began introducing upfront fares for regular Uber rides in July.

The new fare works similar to traditional taxis in that it will set a definite price on the distance — but time can still be a factor. Lyft noted that if "your ride takes more or less time than expected — the ride total you were quoted will not longer apply."  Read more...

An artist is making a nice piece of jewelry out of someone else's toe

A Tumblr user called cummy-eyelids is just thrilled about her upcoming art project: making a necklace out of someone else's pinky toe.

Royallyoily, another Tumblr user who had that toe amputated almost ten years ago, recently commissioned cummy-eyelids to make the piece. "Not only do I absolutely trust your artistic expertise, cummy-eyelids," she wrote, "but I also feel my body part ... could not be in more capable hands."

That's a relief. Who could wear a toe necklace made by an amateur?

But what really set the internet off was the below photo, which cummy-eyelids posted to Tumblr a few weeks ago.  Read more...

There's a devastating environmental cost to returning your Cyber Monday purchases

As the wait for Cyber Monday packages to arrive drags on, here's something to feel guilty about: Your returns.

Goods sent back during the holiday season online shopping are hurting the environment — and retailers.

In 2015, consumers returned $20 billion worth of goods purchased online over the holidays, according to a report by the returns-focused logistics company Optoro. That's nearly a third of total holiday returns, which came in at $69 billion in 2015. Annual returns for the year landed at $260 billion.

All that stuff isn't just getting shipped back out. Those total returns lead to 4 billion pounds of excess and returned inventory sent to landfills by U.S. retailers each year, Optoro said. That's enough to fill 220,000 garbage trucks.  Read more...

The 2017 Pirelli calendar features actresses in #NoMakeup glory

Last year's Pirelli calendar made headlines for its stunning yet silly portrait of a nearly naked Amy Schumer drinking a coffee.

For the 2017 edition, titled "Emotional," photographer Peter Lindbergh went in a different direction.

He visited five cities to photograph powerful actresses including Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong'o, Penélope Cruz and Nicole Kidman, all of whom embraced the makeup-free look.

The idea behind the photos was, “to create a calendar not around perfect bodies, but on sensitivity and emotion, stripping down to the very soul of the sitters, who thus become more nude than naked," Lindbergh said in a press release. Read more...

While binging certainly might make you sleepy, passing out mid-meal is a new extreme. But this baby just wants to keep eating, whether or not sleep is an option.

Mid-way through eating mouthfuls of spaghetti, this sauce-covered baby slipped into a pleasant, carb-induced slumber and then wakes immediately back up to eat more.

We can only assume that eating yourself to sleep is the best way to pass out.

8-foot poisonous snake found inside a toilet is the stuff of nightmares

An 8-foot-long poisonous snouted cobra has been terrorizing an apartment building in Pretoria, South Africa.

The snake was first spotted on Thursday morning inside a toilet in one of the building's apartments. The residents quickly called Barry Greenshields, a snake catcher who attempted to remove the snake from the building, according to News 24

Unfortunately for Greenshields and everyone else in the building, he was unsuccessful and the snake slithered back down the toilet. Resident Anton Meijer posted a clip of the extraction attempt to YouTube, stating, "we still have no idea where the snake is hiding." Read more...

Man livestreams harrowing escape from wildfire

"We just got stuck, we're turning around. There's power lines and trees blocking the road. We cannot get out."

Those are the first words viewers hear when they start watching a video uploaded to Facebook by Michael Luciano, who's in a vehicle along with one other person as they roll over burned up branches and through sheets of smoke, trying to escape a raging fire that has scorched much of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, over the past 24 hours.

The video is apocalyptic. Spots of fire glow orange at the edge of the road. Cabins are engulfed in roiling flames. The sky, normally navy blue above the bare tops of the trees, glows red.  Read more...
