Snapchat update lets you create 'Snapcodes' for any website, including porn

A new Snapchat update rolled out to iOS users Tuesday makes it much easier to share online content within the app. It allows users to create so-called Snapcodes for any link, which is as simple as manually entering a URL into an entry field.

This is good news for online content creators hungry to share their pages within the Snapverse, since Snappers won't be forced to exit the app to view them — they simply have to interact with the code. And it's a win for Snapchat, as users will be less likely to exit the app, pushing engagement and possibly even helping to collect more user data for targeted ad campaigns. Read more...

Editors note: Imagine if every time you used Google, you were reminded of how you lost your family — then found them many years later. That's how it is for Saroo Brierley, whose life story is the basis for Lion, nominated for six Oscars including Best Picture and Supporting Actor (Dev Patel, who plays Brierley as a young man). Brierley penned the following op-ed for Mashable about how technology — which emerged in the years after he was lost — was the only thing that allowed him to find his way back.

2 goats manage to get thier heads stuck in 1 bucket

Goats aren't necessarily known for being the smartest animals in the kingdom.

A man waiting for the bus in Lalitpur, Nepal, stumbled across a sad yet hilarious scene: two curious goats managed to get both of their heads stuck inside a bucket, presumably because there was something delicious inside.

Thankfully a good Samaritan was able to free the goats the from the clutches of the bucket, and it seemed like nobody even missed the bus in the process.

Boy Scouts lifts ban on transgender boys

If you're searching for some hope in the world right now, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has lifted a ban preventing transgender boys from joining the organization.

On Monday, the group announced the controversial stance that spanned more than a century would be reversed via a statement on its website.

"For more than 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America, along with schools, youth sports and other youth organizations, have ultimately deferred to the information on an individual’s birth certificate to determine eligibility for our single-gender programs," the group said to preface the announcement. "However, that approach is no longer sufficient as communities and state laws are interpreting gender identity differently, and these laws vary widely from state to state." Read more...

Even primates use Tinder now

Swiping has become such a pervasive way of finding love that even primates are doing it now.

It’s all part of a four-year project in the Netherlands dubbed “Tinder for orangutans.”

Scientists at the Apenhaul primate park will soon have an 11-year-old female orangutan named Samboja swipe through a selection of possible partners. Though, sadly, she'll have her own private app, so you won't be able to match with her next time you open Tinder.

The goal is to pair her up an orangutan she’s actually attracted to and improve her breeding chances. Basically for the same reason you find yourself swiping around at 2 a.m. on a Wednesday. Except your companion for an evening can usually be right around the corner.  Read more...

So much for peak iPhone: Apple's smartphone just had its best quarter yet

Apple can sell iPhones and make a lot of money doing it.

Crazy thought, as you look at your iPhone or the iPhones around you, but it's been top of mind to investors as they judge the short-term viability of one of the world's most valuable companies. For the last three quarters, iPhone shipments were on a decline.

This time around Apple proved that it's still a tech giant worth owning. The company set a new record for unit sales, which also helped them bring in a record amount of revenue for the product.

"We're thrilled to report that our holiday quarter results generated Apple's highest quarterly revenue ever, and broke multiple records along the way. We sold more iPhones than ever before and set all-time revenue records for iPhone, Services, Mac and Apple Watch," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement Tuesday.  Read more...

'Overwatch' scourge Bastion is finally due for some changes

There's an unspoken rule in Overwatch: Bastion always gets "Play of the Game" honors.

The trolliest among Overwatch heroes, Bastion is a machine gun-toting robot that can transform into a stationary bullet-hosing turretbot. The math is super simple: If Bastion can see you, Bastion can kill you.

Well. Now, at long last, it seems like developer Blizzard Entertainment is keen on changing things up for the lovable-yet-detestable defense hero.

A new Overwatch forum post from Principal Designer Geoff Goodman lays out the planned changes, which should roll out in the next Public Test Region update. They're comparable to hero-altering updates we've seen in the past for D.Va and Symmetra. Read more...

Donald Trump holding executive orders is the meme that keeps giving

Though it may seem like forever to some, Donald Trump has been in office for less than two weeks, and he's made it a point to sign some controversial executive orders in the process. Trump has made quite the scene signing these orders, making some of the signings a big photo op for all to see.

But there's a downside to Trump's bragging — in the process of showing of these newly minted executive orders he's breaking a golden rule of the internet by holding up a sign or a piece of paper to a camera. Whenever that happens, the internet has free reign to Photoshop whatever it damn well pleases onto the paper, and things have been getting pretty great recently. Read more...

This website finds the perfect reaction GIF to express your selfies

Even with all the crap going on in the world, you can always count on the internet to come up with something stupidly wonderful to distract you from reality and cheer you up.

Alex Holachek's "Reaction GIF Generator" (via BoingBoing) isn't your typical GIF generator. In what must have been a clever napkin idea, Holachek decided it would be brilliant to combine the randomness of Giphy with Microsoft's Emotion API, which uses machine learning to detect between eight distinct, universal emotions (anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, neutral, sadness, and surprise).

The result of his mashup is this hilarious GIF generator that analyzes your selfie and then spits out a GIF to match your facial expression. Read more...

After this gruesome murder, you'll never look at chimps the same way again

Chimps aren't exactly the soft and cuddly animals that Curious George would have you believe.

Scientists have documented aggression in territorial chimps on numerous occasions, with separate bands of chimps attacking, killing and even cannibalizing one another to gain access to more resources.

But a new study details a far more rare case of chimp murder: One aggressive male chimp appears to have been attacked and killed by members of the group he once led.

The chimp — named Foudouko by the scientists studying the Fongoli community of chimps in Senegal — seemed to have been killed in 2013 after he attempted to rejoin the community he once led after five years in exile, the study published in the International Journal of Primatology said.  Read more...

Budweiser accidentally made a moving political statement with its Super Bowl ad

Budweiser claims it didn't set out to make a moving political statement with its new Super Bowl commercial — but fate evidently had other ideas.

The ad follows Budweiser's immigrant founder, Adolphus Busch, along his quest from Germany to America in the late 1800s. Upon arriving, he isn't exactly greeted with open arms right away.

"You're not wanted here," a man growls at him immediately after his immigration papers are stamped.

Given the current political climate around immigration and refugees, it's not hard to see how one might take the message of the ad as a comment on the times.

Male-specific fake tan is a thing now because of, um, reasons

Since then, Park-Pettiford told Mashable via Messenger he shared the story to help speak up against Trump's immigration ban

I told this story about #refugees a couple years ago on Veterans Day with a humorous slant. I'm going to tell it again today, unfiltered.

Teenager receives a huge gift surprise from Miss Universe contestant

A teenager in the Philippines came home to a dream come true — a prom dress that graced the Miss Universe stage just days before.

This risky fireworks battle is straight out of a Harry Potter scene

Don't try this at home. Seriously.

This intense battle between two guys in China shooting fireworks at each other is going viral.

The official People's Daily outlet tweeted the dangerous "duel" between the two men, where they blasted fireworks on sticks at each other. Needless to say, we don't recommend doing this. Ever.

The scene looks a lot like the showdown between Harry Potter and Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2.

The event took place over Chinese New Year, which is usually celebrated with fireworks in China.

Samsung to launch something on Feb. 26, but it probably won't be a phone

If it were any other February, we'd probably be waiting for Samsung to launch a new version of its flagship smartphone. But after the Note7 fiasco and the subsequent long investigation into what happened, the Galaxy S8 launch got pushed to a later, yet-unannounced date.

However, judging by this invite I've just received, Samsung will be launching something this February — and it's probably going to be a tablet.

The invite itself has no info beyond the date and place, and frankly, the image could be a stylized representation of anything. But the Galaxy Tab S3 has recently been certified by the FCC, which means it should be ready for a February launch.  Read more...

This country will give all its senior citizens a biometrics-based smart health card

This country just banned cash transactions over $4,500

India's war against black money has led to several new policies and orders of late, one of which was announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday in his Union Budget presentation in the Parliament.

The country has banned all cash transactions above Rs 300,000 (roughly $4,500) from April 1.

This move follows last year's ban on high-value currency notes that had sucked in 86% of the cash in circulation and sent India's 1.3 billion people into a collective frenzy.

Jaitley's decision is based on a recommendation made by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money that was set up by India's apex court.  Read more...

Relax everyone, your gin supply is safe

LONDON — Gin is a precious thing. But, recent fears over dwindling supplies of juniper have troubled gin enthusiasts around the world.

The UK's National Tree Seed Project has been quietly working to safeguard the future of gin by protecting native juniper trees. Berries from the juniper tree are a critical ingredient in the production of gin

The project — set up by Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank — has been collecting juniper seeds from across the country since May 2013.

The seed collection forms part of a wider project to collect seeds from the entire UK woody flora. And, juniper is the first species to be fully collected in its entirety across Great Britain

The supply of gin has become an ever-growing concern as a deadly tree fungus — Phytophthora austrocedri — has been killing juniper trees across the UK in recent years. A 2015 report found two thirds of juniper stock in Scotland — the UK's last stronghold for juniper — to be unfit for usage. Read more...

How Nike plans to break one of the most daunting barriers in human performance

Human beings have walked the earth for millennia, yet no one has ever run 26.2 miles — a marathon, if you prefer — in less than two hours.

Can it be done? Nike thinks this is year it will be done. In December, the company announced a lofty goal to break the barrier sometime in 2017. Now, speaking on the record for the first time, three of the principle architects of this quest shared with Mashable just how the footwear giant plans to break one of the most daunting barriers in human physical performance.

The closest anyone's ever gotten to breaking the two-hour mark on an official course was Dennis Kimetto, a runner from Kenya who ran the 2014 Berlin Marathon in two hours, two minutes and 57 seconds. For historical context, Haile Gebrselassie set a mark of two hours, three minutes and 59 seconds in 2008, while Khalid Khannouchi set a mark of two hours, five minutes and 42 seconds in 2009.  Read more...

It’s time to stop doubting Apple

A good quarter for a company can make critics forget what they were talking about.

In the days leading up to Apple’s first quarter 2017 earnings report, which encompasses last year’s holiday buying season, many pundits were engaged in hand-wringing over Apple’s fortunes and futures. Questions included:

No one predicted the blockbuster quarter Apple ended up with, which included a record-breaking $78.4B in revenue. The champion product was none other than the once-flagging iPhone, specifically the bigger, pricier iPhone 7 Plus. We’d heard about supply shortages when Apple introduced the phone last fall, but most assumed this was due to orchestrated scarcity to inflate interest and keep demand high. In reality, demand was very high all on its own. Read more...

Apple just beat Samsung as the world's top smartphone maker

Apple reported selling 78.3 million iPhones in the last quarter of 2016, whereas Samsung sold "just" 77.5 million phones. (Different companies use different financial calendars, which is why Apple considers the same period the first quarter of 2017.)

Remember when Facebook was a fun place to see cute baby photos? And now it feels more like a sanitarium where everyone's screeching about the impending apocalypse? And scrolling through it knots your stomach and makes you feel like going to bed forever?

Turns out,  there's something to all of that.

Consider how your relationship with social media's changed since President Donald Trump took office. It's no doubt helped you stay on top of each day's fresh horror unleashed by the guy elected to lead our free world, like the Muslim ban railroaded into place by executive order at the end of last week. Maybe it's helped you join—or even organize—some protests. Read more...

Bryan Singer explains why the X-Men franchise is perfect for TV

Ever since the very first X-Men film went into production, filmmaker Bryan Singer has, minus a step out of the universe here and there, held a Professor X-level degree of authority over the movie franchise. Now he’s expanding the world of the mutant superheroes into television — and he’s even getting behind the camera himself for the pilot.

Mashable caught up with Singer at the premiere of the FX's new X-verse series, Legion, created by Fargo's Noah Hawley, which counts Singer as an executive producerLegion is the first co-production between Marvel Television and 20th Century Fox (the studio that owns the film and TV rights to Marvel's X-Men characters under a long-held licensing agreement) — but it won't be the last. Snapchat will soon make real clouds vomit rainbows

With lenses, Snapchat has already made augmented reality a large, core part of its platform. And now the popular app is looking to further expand into AR with environment-detection that'll augment your surroundings.

According to The Information, Snap Inc. is working on a more advanced version of the real-time "World Lenses" that were introduced last year.

The new lenses, which don't have a name yet, will reportedly be able to "identify environmental elements" and let users "layer an object like a blimp in the sky."

It's unclear how the feature, which is currently being tested internally and isn't slated for a release soon, works exactly. For instance, we don't know to what the environment detection is looking for and if the overlaid objects/images  will be applied automatically or not.  Read more...

Trump's short Black History Month speech was mostly about himself

It took President Donald Trump just three paragraphs before he began to talk about himself in the opening speech of a meeting held on Wednesday morning to honor Black History Month.

The president briefly mentioned Martin Luther King Jr., then pivoted to talk about how news coverage of himself is bad and he does not like it.

"Last month we celebrated the life of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., an incredible example, unique in American history," Trump said. "You read all about Dr. Martin Luther King a week ago when somebody said I took the statue out of my office. And it turned out that that was fake news. Fake news." Read more...

Using a mind reading device, 'locked-in' patients told researchers they're happy

In a major breakthrough, a team of European researchers has developed a high-tech solution to give a voice to the voiceless.

By using a brain-computer interface, the team from the Wyss Center in Geneva successfully communicated with patients suffering from complete locked-in syndrome (CLIS), a devastating neurological condition. The researchers published their findings in a new paper published in PLOS Biology

Those affected by CLIS, which comes as a result of diseases like ALS or neurological damage from a stroke or damage to the spinal cord, suffer from total paralysis. Mentally, however, they remain active and aware of their surroundings. In other words, their consciousness is locked inside their body with no way to break free. Read more...

How Facebook is trying to dominate mobile without owning your smartphone

Mobile, once Facebook's greatest flaw, is now the social network's greatest success thanks to its ownership of four of the world's most powerful apps.

That's not enough. Now, Facebook is working on further integrating these apps to dominate your smartphone experience — while simultaneously building for the next platform.

"For a while it didn't make sense to do multiple standalone apps," said Scott Stanchak, New York Times managing director of platform operations, "but Facebook proved that theory wrong."

The numbers for the company's standalone apps are already huge. Facebook says it attracts more than 1.79 billion people per month overall. Instagram counts 600 million users per month and Messenger has 1 billion. There is some overlap in these numbers, since users can belong to more than one app, but it's a massive user base.  Read more...

Johnny Depp apparently spends $2 million a month to live like Johnny Depp

A lawsuit battle between Johnny Depp and his former business management company has revealed more about the actor than any interview with Barbra Walters or Oprah Winfrey ever could.

Depp, who originally sued The Management Group for misconduct and claimed they grossly misused his finances, received a countersuit from the management company, who claim that they did all they could to manage Depp's lifestyle, but that his outrageous spending was to blame.

The suit was filed on Jan. 31, and disclosed some of the actor's surprising habits.

Instagram is testing photo albums, because nothing is sacred anymore

Instagram is about to get a lot more like Facebook.

The app is testing a new feature that allows you to share multiple photos and/or videos in a single post. That's right: photo albums could be coming to Instagram.

The feature, which is currently live in the beta version of Instagram's Android app, allows you to select up to 10 photos and videos to combine into a single post. It's not clear what the final post would look like in the app's feed, as the beta doesn't allow you to actually share such a post, but presumably it would look like the app's "carousel" ads that allow you to swipe through multiple photos. Video games are already off to a great start in 2017 — especially after the runaway success of Resident Evil 7 — and February is looking even better.
