A group of artists celebrated some of the biggest Oscar-nominated movies by reimagining them in different film, TV, video game and comic book universes.

Imgur user Diablien uploaded a collection of 10 alternative posters for Oscar-nominated movies featuring characters from other universes and new titles to fit them. The gallery also includes links to  purchase the poster prints along with attribution to the different artists.

The mash-up of Pokémon with Zootopia may be one of the greatest creations imaginable and putting Deadpool and Wolverine into Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling's roles in La La Land is definitely the funniest idea to come out of this collection. Read more...

Kellyanne Conway reportedly benched from TV by Team Trump

Does it seem like we've been seeing less of Kellyanne Conway lately?

Once the most recognizable mouthpiece of President Trump, she hasn't been on TV since last week, when she said on MSNBC that Trump still had "full confidence" in Gen. Michael Flynn...a few hours before Flynn resigned.

If absence makes the heart grow fonder, Kellyanne's fans can prepare for the worst— Conway has reportedly fallen out of favor with Trump. On Wednesday, CNN reported that Conway's been "sidelined," taking her out of the mix as one of Trump's media surrogates.

Even before that interview, Conway's presence seemed to have peaked. After a series of particularly contentious interviews, CNN reportedly began passing on interviews with ConwayMorning Joe, the MSNBC show that is known to count Trump as a fan, also reportedly refused to have her onRead more...

NASA discovered 7 Earth-sized planets and everyone made the same Trump jokes

Finally — some good news. NASA has found what pretty much appears to be a backup solar system a mere 40 light-years away. And not a moment too soon.

Scientists discovered seven Earth-sized exoplanets circling a dwarf star, TRAPPIST-1, and everyone on Earth is ready to sign up for a one-way ticket to the new system. (Using current technology, it would be nearly impossible for humans to get to the planetary system, however. #Thanks2017.)

Image: NASA/JPL-CALTECH

Everyone also immediately made the discovery about the 45th president. With seven new worlds suddenly available, the possibilities seemed endless. Earthlings could send Trump to the new system. He could mess up these exoplanets before destroying Earth. Or we could all flee to these new worlds and leave Trump behind. Read more...

The pineapple on pizza debate is tearing us apart

When you hear the phrase "pineapple on pizza" people are either drooling in hunger, dancing on a table at 3 a.m., or reaching for a barf bag to throw up their disgust.

The debate over whether to put fruit on your pizza dough is raging again and it's as ugly as a four-day-old slice.

Over the past week, we've learned that when it comes to this particular food mashup, there is no neutral ground. The crazed masses of the internet jumped into the latest round after Iceland president's boldly declared that if he could, he would ban people from adding pineapple as a pizza topping.

Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, President of Iceland, created so much controversy with his comment that he had to backtrack by offering an apology to pineapple lovers and pineapples everywhere.  Read more...

'Mass Effect' brings totally f*ckable aliens to 'Cards Against Humanity'

It's about time: Half of all websites are now encrypted

Slowly but surely, the web is becoming more secure.

About half of all websites are now encrypted using HTTPS, in a development the Electronic Freedom Foundation (EFF) has labeled a significant milestone.

Both Google and Mozilla now report that at least 50 percent of web traffic from their respective browsers is encrypted with HTTPS, the secure internet protocol that helps protect users from tracking and other malicious activities.

The nonprofit EFF and other privacy advocates have been encouraging wider adoption of HTTPS for years but progress has been relatively slow. Even now, many mainstream websites and services still use the less secure HTTP protocol, or don't turn on HTTPS for everyone by default.  Read more...

For only the second known time, a chimp has a disorder similar to Down Syndrome

A 24-year-old chimp in Japan has a genetic disorder similar to Down Syndrome in humans, researchers have found.

Kanako is only the second chimpanzee known to have the chromosomal defect trisomy 22. The disorder has stunted her growth, left her blind and resulted in a congenital heart disease and underdeveloped teeth.

But she's also lived a surprisingly long time.

The first chimp with a confirmed case of trisomy 22 — which scientists documented in 1969 — didn't live to see its second birthday. That makes Kanako the longest-living chimp with this chromosomal disorder, at least that scientists are aware of, according to a new study in the journal Primates. Read more...

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick needs to resign

In the wake of sexual harassment and fundamental employee mismanagement allegations detailed by a female engineer, thousands of people are deleting Uber from their smartphones in protest. Again.

It's a nice gesture, but will probably have very little impact on Uber's bottom line. This is a global company after all, and I think it's safe to assume that most of those deleting Uber are in the U.S. The #DeleteUber movement gives you that temporary rush of "There. Now I've really done something!" until you realize that the last time we all did #DeleteUber over Uber CEO Travis Kalanick's involvement with President Donald Trump, just 200,000 people (out of an estimated 40 million monthly uniques) dropped the service. Hug a tree while you still can: U.S. forests are disappearing

The Amazon rainforest and Indonesia's peat swamps aren't the only places suffering from deforestation. On the mainland U.S., swaths of forests are steadily disappearing, too.

It's not just that we're losing trees. The forests themselves are growing farther and farther apart, researchers say.

A new study found that the average distance between forest patches increased by nearly 1,690 feet — or about 14 percent — between 1992 and 2001.

That's bad news for biodiversity.

Think of each forest patch as a sanctuary or transit hub for migratory animals and other species. When forests are closely knit together, the wildlife, plants and soil can share nutrients and thrive. When trees are few and far between, these connections break down. Read more...

iPhone users spent so much money in the App Store last year

Congratulations, iPhone users: you spent a ton of money on apps last year.

Right after the holiday season, Apple touted huge App Store sales. But now analysts at SensorTower have broken down the numbers at the user level to give us a better look at what people were spending their money on.

The standout stat: The average iPhone user coughed up $40 on premium apps and in-app purchases throughout the year, up from $35 in 2015. But the spending growth didn't necessarily come from new downloads, as iPhone owners actually downloaded fewer apps in 2016 than the year before (33 per device last year compared to 35 in 2015).  Read more...

Here's what the Ice Age tells us about future sea level rise

A new study on an ancient ice sheet may hold important clues about our planet's future.

The research focuses on the Laurentide Ice Sheet, the massive expanse covering North America during the last Ice Age, which ended about 10,000 years ago. A team of scientists found that small spikes in the temperature of the ocean — not the air — likely caused periods of rapid melting and splintering of the ice.

Their findings add to a growing body of evidence that climate change could ultimately drive sea levels even higher than today's models predict, according to the study published Feb. 15 in the journal Nature. Glaciers in Greenland, Antarctica and other areas have been melting rapidly in recent years due in part to increasing ocean temperatures. Read more...

Somewhere along the internet's path into content oblivion, Spiderman and Elsa videos on YouTube became a guaranteed and genuinely weird traffic winner.

The premise is simple enough: Adults dress as characters from the Spiderman and Frozen franchise and act out wordless, often slightly violent skits to chirpy music.

As TubeFilter noted in early February, these short films, ostensibly for children, have been racking up the views. Search "Spiderman and Elsa" on YouTube and you get more than 6 million results.

The videos are part of a surge of kid-friendly content on Youtube — a trend the site itself has embraced via the Youtube Kids app (the main app is meant for people 13 and over). Videos of Kinder eggs being opened, toy reviews and yes, even Spiderman and Elsa skits aren't just niche, mind-melting internet fodder: they are a full-blown business. Read more...

Users get message about Susan Fowler when trying to delete Uber

Some Uber users trying to delete the app are getting a notification from the company specifically mentioning the allegations of sexual harassment detailed over the weekend in a blog post by former employee Susan Fowler Rigetti.

A screenshot of one such interaction, confirmed to Mashable as authentic by an Uber spokesperson, demonstrates the lengths to which the company is going to assure fleeing customers that "what [Fowler] describes is abhorrent and against everything Uber stands for and believes in."

Gentle koala investigating his carer's arm is what dreams are made of

You have to love the story of an orphan made good, right?

Dust the koala, who is under the care of a koala rescue service on Australia's east coast, was found injured and taken in by Port Stephens Koalas in January. Dust was roaming the streets without his mother, according to the shelter's Facebook post, weighing a measly 1.8 kilograms (3.96 pounds).

After a bit of TLC, Dust has become quite the curious and affectionate koala, giving its carer little sniffs and kisses.

"Because he's still growing, he will now be on formula until he's around 2.5 [kilograms] at which point he will be released," the rescue service explained on Facebook when he was first found.  Read more...

Internet stands up for trans kids as Trump rolls back protections

In a significant setback, the Trump administration rescinded federal guidelines that give transgender students the right to use public school restrooms that match their gender identity.

According to the Washington Post, officials from the Department of Justice and the Department of Education told the U.S. Supreme Court to "disregard memos" on transgender student rights.

The guidelines, first issued by the Obama administration, say that prohibiting transgender students from using facilities which match their gender violates federal anti-discrimination laws on the basis of sex. Read more...

Japan launches an app that'll tell you where the nearest vacant toilet is

When you gotta go, you gotta go — until all the cubicles are full and there's a snaking line waiting.

A Japanese company has the perfect solution: an app that shows the nearest vacant toilet.

According to telecommunications giant KDDI, the app will predict if toilets are in use by using sensors installed on stall doors to determine whether they are open or closed.

App users will then receive real-time updates on how many cubicles are available in their area.

"People often waste time by looking around for an available toilet on various floors or by waiting until one becomes available," KDDI spokesman Daisuke Maruo told the Japan Times. Read more...

Enough is enough! Citizens of this country demand a public sex offenders registry

The US has it. The UK and Ireland have it. And now, an Indian state will have it too.

The southern state of Kerala has announced the institution of a Sex Offenders Registry following increasing attacks on women in the state. With this, it becomes the first Indian state to put out identification details of sex offenders in public domain, The News Minute reports.

It all started when a popular Kerala actress was reportedly abducted and molested in her car, an incident that led to outrage in the film industry and political parties.

And last month, when a convicted pedophile was arrested in the national capital of Delhi, there were demands for a National Sex Offenders Registry.  Read more...

Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus rumored to have a 6.2-inch screen

At this rate of information leakage, we're likely to know every single detail about Samsung's upcoming flagship phone well before it launches.

Reliable leaks guy Evan Blass just posted a full set of specs for the larger version of the device, apparently named the Samsung Galaxy S8+.

Most specs aren't out of the ordinary, and some, like the 12-megapixel dual rear camera and 4GB of RAM, are slightly underwhelming. But the spec sheet claims the device will have a huge, 6.2-inch screen (or, in reality, a 6.1-inch screen if you consider the rounded corners). Read more...

People can't, can't, can't believe how much some are paying for Justin Bieber's concert tickets

We told you that Justin Bieber is performing in India for the first time.

Understandably, there's a lot of excitement, especially in millennials who can't have enough of the 23-year-old pop sensation.

But now there's a problem as we discovered once the tickets went on sale.

Firstly, there's a queue. Even if you wait, you are never sure that you're going to get a ticket. What if they are exhausted by 2,000 or even 3,900?

And you thought only ATMs in India have queues? At least those were to get money, not spend it #JustinBieberIndia pic.twitter.com/6plre83R7c

The four-minute 'Alien:Covenant' prologue is surprisingly cheery

After the first poster and trailer for Alien:Covenant scared the bejeezus out of us, we expected something equally sinister from the new, four-minute prologue to the movie.

But it's exactly the opposite: We get to meet the crew of the colony ship Covenant before things start going awry, and while there's a lot of uneasy looks and one pretty scary situation (especially if you've watched the original Alien), do not expect to see alien claws ripping through human flesh in this one.

According to the YouTube clip's description, the prologue shows us the "main crew (all couples) and their android, Walter, enjoy their final meal together before cryosleep." That explains the clip's title: "Last Supper," but given how the original movie ends, we don't doubt that for many of these crew members, this was, in fact, their last supper.  Read more...

One telecom carrier is fixing a major privacy problem you probably don't know about

A telecom operator is trying to fix a major privacy problem that many of us are unaware about.

Vodafone, India’s second largest telecom operator by subscribers, has introduced a new way for its subscribers, especially women, to top up talktime credit to their phones without disclosing their phone number to strangers.

The new program, called Private Recharge Mode, allows people to add credit to their phones with a unique code instead of their phone number.

It might sound like a non-issue to many, but in India, where over 90% of the billion mobile phone users are on prepaid connection, walk into mom-and-pop shops and hand out their phone numbers to top up their accounts.  Read more...

As #DeleteUber rages, Lyft expands to 54 new cities

Lyft is having a big 2017, both due to reasons of its own making and, um, others

On the Lyft side of things, the ride-hailing app on Thursday expanded its service to 54 new cities and four new states — its biggest launch day ever. That expansion is part of Lyft's goal to enter 100 new cities in 2017.

Lyft got started on that goal with a launch in 40 cities in late January, which brought the ride-hailing competitor into three new states. This time, Lyft is adding service in Alabama, Iowa, North Dakota and West Virginia. The goal for Lyft is to move from covering 55 percent of the U.S. population to 72 percent by the end of the year, the company said in January.  Read more...

Finally, there's a Mike Tyson iPhone emoji for every situation

First things first: Yes, there's an ear emoji.

Mike Tyson on Thursday became the latest celebrity to release an emoji sticker application and the ear is right there among the portraits and catch-phrases and other ephemera, clenched between a bared set of teeth.

This is life for Tyson now, 20 years after his most infamous moment, when he bit a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear off during a 1997 bout for the heavyweight championship. Tyson was already a boxing legend by then; at 20 years old, in the late 1980s, he became the youngest pugilist to win the World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council titles. That ignominious bout with Holyfield represented a professional nadir, but now the ear-bite heard 'round the world is a joking matter.  Read more...

Dog DGAF when poor owner shells out $1,000 after it swallows a bouncy ball

We love our pets unconditionally. But sometimes, they test that love. A lot.

For example, Redditor Ferenginar's dog decided to swallow a $0.25 bouncy ball. You know, one that you get from those toy dispensers in malls or right by the exit in grocery stores.

The problem was, the ball got stuck in the dog. And in the end, a bouncy ball that cost a quarter ended up costing almost $1,000 to get it surgically removed from the dog.

The best part? The dog clearly would do it again. Just look at her face.

"We saw it happen," Ferenginar said in response to questions about how the ball ended up in the dog in the first place. My son was playing with the ball and the dog grabbed it as it was bouncing around." Read more...

The 27 hardest job interview questions, according to Glassdoor

Jobs interviews are always hard, but some come with trickier questions than others. Where do you see yourself in five years? How many ping pong balls fit in a school bus?

Glassdoor, the jobs- and career-focused site, compiled 27 of the toughest interview questions job seekers face in any field. The information came from job seekers and Glassdoor users who shared their interview experiences on the site. The website looked through questions that users marked as difficult to find the toughest ones across industries.

Along with individual questions, Glassdoor found that hospitals have the most challenging interview process, followed by nonprofits. The number of screenings, company size, public or private status of employer and job seekers' education and age all affected how difficult interviews were.  Read more...

You'll have to wait to play old Nintendo games on your Switch

Virtual Console, the subsection of Nintendo's online eShop that peddles downloadable games from across the company's history, won't be available for Switch owners at launch.

The news is confirmed in a Feb. 23 email that also lists the three indie games that will be available in the eShop at launch. Two of those games are Shovel Knight.

There's no word on when Virtual Console titles will be available for Switch. Nintendo's email plainly states that it "will share more information in the future."

Hopefully the delay can be attributed to ongoing efforts on Nintendo's part to bring Virtual Console purchases on earlier consoles forward to the Switch. A 'weather bomb' named Doris batters the UK

A large and rapidly intensifying storm struck northern Ireland and the UK on Thursday, plastering some areas with snow and bringing widespread wind gusts approaching or exceeding hurricane force.

The storm, named Doris by the UK Met Office, crossed Ireland as it intensified, before pinwheeling between Scotland and England. According to the Met Office, the storm underwent bombogenesis, which occurs when the central pressure in a storm plummets by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours.

As of Thursday afternoon local time, the center of the storm had emerged over the North Sea, with the backside of the circulation battering London and other parts of southeastern England with strong winds. Some light snow was still flying in Scotland, the Met Office said. Read more...

Inauguration singer and her trans sister would like to talk to President Trump

One critic of the Trump administration's repeal of protections for transgender students in public schools should come as no surprise: Jackie Evancho, the 16-year-old inauguration performer and sister of a transgender woman currently suing her school district over the issue.

Evancho, a  former contestant on America's Got Talent, tweeted at Donald Trump Wednesday evening, asking for a meeting with her and her sister to "discuss transgender rights."

On Wednesday, the Trump administration rolled back a previous Obama-era rule that allowed transgender students to use restrooms in public schools that matched their gender identity. The rule was challenged in the courts and is not currently being enforced.  Read more...

The Grey Lady would like to have a word.

The New York Times is launching a new ad campaign around "The Truth," its first major TV marketing effort in more than a decade.

The first ad will debut during the Academy Awards on ABC this Sunday.

The ad addresses all the noise around modern media, particularly the arguments around bias and alternative facts.

The Times has been among the most vilified news outlets by President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly called the outlet "failing."

The paper has published some of the most deeply reported journalism about the Trump administration, much of which has cast the president in a negative light. Read more...

Your next phone could shoot slow motion video at a whopping 960 fps

If you like recording slow motion videos with your smartphone, you're going to love what's coming in the future.

While smartphones today can record impressive slow motion videos at 120 or 240 frames per second (fps), Sony has developed a new CMOS image sensor for phones that can record slow motion at 960 fps.

With 960 fps capture, motion will be slowed even more so you can really see every drop of water burst from a balloon or every chunk of watermelon explode when you wrap too many rubber bands around it.

According to Nikkei Technology, Sony was able to create such high frame-rate capture by sandwiching a DRAM layer between "the image sensing part and the logic circuit part" to create a system that can temporarily store more images at once before compiling them into a slow motion video. YouTube livestream of pregnant giraffe briefly pulled for nudity and sexually explicit content

A livestream of a pregnant giraffe waiting to give birth has struck controversy online after alleged animal rights activists successfully had the stream removed.

"This is the perfect example of why we can't have nice things," said Jordan Patch, owner Animal Adventure Park in New York. After the stream was taken down, Patch was visibly shook and vented his frustrations in a Facebook Live Thursday morning.

Patch claims that the livestream of its pregnant giraffe April, received 20 to 30 million views in just twelve hours. But with this masses came problems. While the zoo sees the video as education, Patch says that some "extremists and animal right activists" reported the livestream as containing sexually explicit or nude content, which triggered YouTube to pull the video.  Read more...

#BootBae shows us the real function of high heel boots

Every once in a while, a video comes around to remind us we're not alone.

In relationships, society tells us it's unattractive to be possessive, but it's hard to fight our feelings. When those feelings of possessiveness arise within us, we worry about coming off as overprotective, jealous, or even insecure. But not now, not today.

#BootBae is here to liberate us all.

At a date auction, a woman was strutting her stuff in front of a crowd of potential bidders to take her on a date. She spotted a man in the front row, and decided to approach to give him a better look. Read more...

Inside Uber: Women either 'drink the Kool-aid' or suffer

Women working at Uber face a culture of sexism and harassment that takes a serious toll not just on their careers, but also their mental health.

"I knew two women engineers who both experienced psychological trauma after being at Uber," a former engineer who worked for Uber said in a phone call Tuesday.

"Uber is also the only place where I’ve had to walk around the block with somebody and have them cry on my shoulder," she added.

This woman, who worked at Uber in 2015, gave an account of her time at the company that closely mirrors the experience of Susan Fowler Rigetti (who goes by Susan J. Fowler on her blog), the former employee of the ride-hailing startup, who has renewed discussion of the company's treatment of women with her blog post recounting a "very, very strange year at Uber." But Fowler is not alone; now, another former Uber engineer is speaking out.  Read more...

Watch a bunch of chubby tigers take down a drone and try to eat it

A drone operator got a little too close to a group of excited Siberian tigers, and well, a drone looks a whole lot like a really awesome cat toy.

According to The Independent, a sanctuary in China's Heilongjiang Province uses drones to help keep their tigers get in shape, though it doesn't seem to be working well because some of the tigers still look a little overweight. (Not that we're tiger fitness experts.) Regardless, the drone flew a bit too low, and one of the tigers makes an impressive leap, knocking the drone out of the sky.

The rest of the tigers gather round as one of them starts to chomp on the drone, causing it to emit a thick grey smoke. Don't worry, though, the staff were able to remove the mangled machine before it caused any harm to the animals.  Read more...

Here are all the 'Stranger Things Seaso 2' tidbits for you to obsess over until fall

We have a release date. We have episode titles. We have an endless loop of Millie Bobby Brown videos to watch until Halloween, but what else can we pore over until Stranger Things comes back? For now we'll settle for nitpicking every known plot detail — it'll have to be October by then, right?

Here's what we know for sure about Stranger Things 2...besides the fact that we'll love it.

Eleven is back, but how?

Actually, let's be clear: Brown is back, but Eleven isn't spoken for yet. In fact, the season at least begins with Mike mourning her apparent death in their fight against the Demagorgon — but we know that Sheriff Hopper ain't leaving no Eggos in the woods for the bears. While Season 1 was about meeting Eleven as she is now and seeing how she interacts with people for the first time, Season 2 will go deeper into her history and background. Read more...

The Oscars movies get 'Honest Trailer' treatment

La La Land or "Hollywood Hand Job"?

Honest Trailers thinks the movie's alternative title should be the later.

This week, the popular ScreenJunkies series from Defy Media poked fun at the nine Best Picture Oscar nominees with its classic trailer-spoof format.

"It's that time of the year when L.A.'s pretty narcissists use their awards to take shots at D.C.'s ugly narcissists," the voice says in the trailer. "As these nine films compete for Hollywood's highest honor because back when it was just five the Academy couldn't trick you into rooting for something you actually saw."

The Washington Post wants you to watch people scream at politicians

We're used to seeing politicians give long-winded speeches, ask politely to complete their points, and respond to others with a smattering of polite applause. In reality, we'd rather watch randos scream at them.

The Washington Post has gifted the internet with a list of 30 videos in which politicians from Barack Obama to Jeb Bush to Mitch McConnell get yelled at. It's pretty awesome.

The list is mostly full of Republicans, many of whom have endured or dodged a barrage of questions and shouting at recent town halls. You can watch a man yell at Sen. Chuck Grassley about the Affordable Care Act. You can watch Majority Leader Mitch McConnell slowly lose his will to survive in the face of a woman shouting a few feet from his slackened face. You can watch an entire room holler "do your job" at Sen. Joni Ernst.  Read more...

GLAAD celebrates triumphs of black transgender trailblazers in new video

Black transgender activists are finally getting some of the recognition they deserve.

To mark Black History Month, LGBTQ media advocacy organization GLAAD created a video to celebrate 14 influential black trans people, all of whom have made vital contributions to the movement.

The video, which focuses on visionaries from the past century, features Stonewall-era leaders like Marsha P. Johnson and Miss Major, as well as modern-day advocates like Laverne Cox and Janet Mock.

"Black transgender people have been at the forefront of the fight for trans equality for decades," said Nick Adams, director of GLAAD's Transgender Media Program. Adorable cat brothers reunited thanks to Tinder

Dating apps usually bring people together, but in one very adorable case Tinder brought a pair of cats together.

Butter and Ozzie, an especially cute pair of orange and white feline brothers, were separated when they were adopted by different families from a shelter in Petaluma, California. Their story would have ended there if a stroke of luck hadn't brought their respective owners, Brian Herrera and Cathleen Cavin, together on Tinder.

After chatting on the app for a long time, Cavin almost bailed but eventually agreed to meet Herrera for a date. They hit it off and when she went back to his house, she initially mistook Butter for her own cat, Ozzie, when she spotted him out of the corner of her eye. Read more...

Please: You can come out as gay, you can't 'come out' as conservative

Once upon a (surprisingly-worse) time, only members of the LGBTQ community could come out to the world. For many, coming out was a long, stigmatizing journey that could fray family relationships while putting housing and employment opportunities at risk.

To some people living outside the community, there was something so delightfully saccharine about these liberation stories. By the end of the aughts, everyone was "coming out" as their own "non-traditional" identities: vegetarians, emo fans, nerds and atheists, just to name a few.

While the term's appropriation has always been irritating, it's never been more grating than in its latest iteration: people who now "come out" as conservative. They claim, erroneously, that it's similar to coming out as gay. Read more...

Fugitive pig almost got away with it

A fugitive pig is headed back home to his rightful owners this week after a standoff with two Ohio police officers.

A 911 dispatcher received a call Tuesday morning alerting the police to a pot-belly pig running loose through a Columbus neighborhood.

Two officers managed to leash the pig before snapping a few mugshots for Facebook. Unlike its fellow fugitive animal brethren, however, it refused to wait for its owners in the back of a squad car. Instead, the local humane society came to the rescue with a crate, and soon returned the runaway to his owners. Read more...

Scientists find new link between sugar and Alzheimer's

Scientists are finding more evidence that you should probably cut down on your sugar intake.

A group of U.K. researchers say they've spotted the molecular "tipping point" that could explain sugar's ties to Alzheimer's disease.

Their findings provide further evidence that there might be a link between high blood sugar levels and the memory-robbing disease, though they don't prove that sugar causes Alzheimer's outright.

"Excess sugar is well known to be bad for us when it comes to diabetes and obesity," said Omar Kassaar, a biologist at the University of Bath, in a press releaseRead more...

The sci-fi propulsion system that will get us to TRAPPIST-1 fastest

800,000 years: That's how long (buzzkill) astronaut Scott Kelly said it'll take us to get to the TRAPPIST-1 star system and its seven newly-discovered, potentially life-supporting, Earth-sized worlds.

That timeline, Kelly also notes, is using our current propulsion systems. Which max out at a robust, but not interstellar-ready 29,000 mph.

But what if we could traverse those 235 trillion miles (40 light years) with some other technology—like something from the world of science fiction?

This is awesome! Send me! Be there in 800,000 years w our current propulsion technology. More work to do. Let's get on it! #TRAPPIST1 https://t.co/lCbfGkBpLY

FCC commits $2 billion to expanding internet access in rural America

Internet access is still elusive in much of rural America, and the Federal Communications Commission is taking steps to close that gap.

The FCC on Thursday morning approved a plan to provide $2 billion for a program to encourage the development of broadband internet access to rural parts of the United States. Internet providers will compete for FCC support in a "reverse auction" to expand broadband and voice service to unserved areas in 20 states. The $2 billion commitment is part of the FCC's Connect America Fund.

"Broadband access is essential in the 21st Century for jobs, education, information and economic development. Since 2011, the FCC has been working to expand access in rural areas where deployment costs are high by providing support from the Connect America Fund," the FCC said in a press release.  Read more...

Blind: the app where Uber employees are gossiping right now

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has said change will come to his company after a blog post detailed horrific acts of sexism and repressive, Kafka-esque HR company culture.

Yet, it seemed that some found their last straw, and weren't willing to wait out the change. A rumor circulated that 118 people, based in Uber's San Francisco office, had resigned following that meeting.

This number is not true, according to an Uber spokesperson.

The idea had been posted on Twitter, but it had gained traction on an app called Blind, where techies can anonymously share grievances or just chat. Companies are grouped into private channels, and users are verified based on their work email addresses.  Read more...

Senator finds it hard to respond to criticism from a kid

My roughly 10-year-old cousin once wanted to take me on in ping-pong, using the table in my basementSure, I said. I let him get up 11-1, because I'm much older than he is, and what the hell do I care?

But then he started talking shit. Like, a surprising, not-marginal amount of shit for a 10-year-old. So I beat him. I beat him 21-11. I scored 20 straight points. I probably said something I either don't remember or have blocked out of my mind because I didn't want to remember the taunts I hurled at a kid less than half my age.

Anyway, the takeaway here is that nothing good comes from getting shit-talked, as an adult, by a kid. As both I and Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton now understand.  Read more...
