While the top teams compete in the Super Bowl, everyone else eats

Super Bowl Sunday isn't quite a holiday like Thanksgiving (yet), but everyone eats like it's one.

But instead of turkey and cranberry sauce, everyone is stuffing their faces with only the healthiest of foods. Think chips, beer, cheese dip, chicken wings and pizza. And nachos.

While the 22 men run around in what is one of the world's most watched sporting events, with really expensive ads, millions of fans at home and tailgating parties and take in a lot of carbs and calories.

Before New England and Atlanta go head-to-head in Houston for the Lombardi Trophy, let's break down just how much everyone chows down. Read more...

Lady Gaga will perform with 'hundreds of drones' at Super Bowl LI's halftime show

Viewers watching Sunday's Super Bowl LI halftime show will get more than just an epic Lady Gaga performance.

Hundreds of lit-up drones will join her in the airspace above the field at NRG Stadium in Houston, according to CNNMoney. It will be the first time drones are used during a Super Bowl halftime show.

The report doesn't say what kind of drones will be used or even what company will be orchestrating the quadcopter performance.

Though over 100 million people are expected to watch the New England Patriots face off against the Atlanta Falcons, for most people, it'll be the first time they see hundreds of drones perform. Read more...

Aquarium animals star in the cutest Super Bowl hype video

'A Dog's Purpose' investigation finds no mistreatment of dogs

If you have a shred of human decency, you'll agree that "a dog's purpose" is not to get abused just to help Hollywood make a buck. Thankfully, it looks like a previously released video that appeared to show a dog on the set of the film A Dog's Purpose being abused may have been edited to make things look far worse than they actually were, according to a new report.

On Friday, American Humane (not to be confused with the Humane Society), the group responsible for monitoring the treatment of animals on the set of the film, released a statement effectively absolving the filmmakers of what many had thought was abusive treatment of dogs on set.  Read more...

'The Lego Batman Movie' is a pop-culture feast that also gives good Batman

Mashing up two brands can be a great way to make neither seem appealing: Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, Men in Black and 21 Jump Street, the Flintstones and the Schmoo — you get the nausea ... errr, the idea.

And that's the inherent risk of The Lego Batman movie, in which Warner Bros. takes two of its most potent film-franchise brands — one relatively new and developing, the other time-tested and fool-proof — throws them into a blender and hits frappé.

Have no fear, people of Gotham! What comes out is a whirlwind of comic-book and comedic delightsThe Lego Batman Movie is hysterical and irreverent, yes, but also visually captivating, with big screen-worthy action and the best new bat-vehicle since the Batmobile itself (it's called the Scuttler, and you'll soon be seeing it on a Christmas list near you). The White House just brutally burned Australia's Prime Minister

If Australia thought it mattered to the new U.S. administration, the message is now loud and clear: Nah, not really.

In one week alone, details of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's call with Donald Trump were leaked to the press. He was apparently told by the U.S. president that he "was the worst call by far" on a day that included a chat with Vladimir Putin. Trump's press secretary called him either "Trumbull" or "Trumble" multiple times. And now, they've gotten rid of him altogether.

A call sheet issued Saturday by the Office of the Press Secretary not only declined to mention Turnbull by name, it mistakenly (or purposefully) called him the "President of Australia." If Turnbull was a "cup half full" kind of guy, he could look on this as a promotion. Read more...

Legal action over boxing livestream highlights Facebook's piracy problem

The presence of questionable content on Facebook Live is nothing new, but getting sued for it? That's a little more unusual.

Two Australian men may be facing legal action after they streamed a highly anticipated boxing match on Facebook Live. To the chagrin of the cable television company Foxtel, Darren Sharpe and Brett Hevers livestreamed the Danny Green versus Anthony Mundine fight Friday, ABC reported, with both streams attracting tens of thousands of viewers.

A Foxtel spokesperson said Sunday it was "considering options" and taking advice from lawyers on the "very serious" matter. To watch the bout legally, the company required viewers to pay A$59.95. Read more...

Melissa McCarthy makes a better Sean Spicer than Sean Spicer on 'SNL'

If there's one (small) good thing about Donald Trump's presidency, it's giving America's best comedians a smorgasbord of weirdness to tuck into.

On Saturday Night Live, Melissa McCarthy took a turn as Press Secretary Sean Spicer and it was brutally good. Ill-fitting suit? Check. Alternative facts? CheckInsane gum addition? Check and check.

Parodying Spicer's infamously testy relationship with the press, Spicer/McCarthy used his bully pulpit Saturday to physically bully journalists.

He booed the New York Times, tried to explain why Steve Bannon is on the National Security Council using a giant key and visor as props, and deployed a super soaker filled with soapy water to harass journalists when they asked annoying questions.  Read more...

Alec Baldwin's Trump is back on 'SNL': 'Prepare to go to war'

This Saturday Night Live cold open basically wrote itself.

In the two weeks since the sketch comedy series last aired — on Jan. 21 — the U.S.A. has weathered the Trump administration's immigration ban; increasingly strained international relations with Australia, Germany, Mexico, and Arnold Schwarzenegger; adviser Steve Bannon's secret presidency; embarrassing gaffes around Black History Month and Holocaust Remembrance Day; and the dictatorial overtones currently emanating from the White House.

The cold open, which brings back Alec Baldwin's cutting Trump impersonation, rips into all of it. Because, really... what else is there to do? Read more...

Kristen Stewart's 'SNL' monologue blasts Trump's obsession with Robert Pattinson

True story: Donald Trump, the electoral college-mandated 45th president of the United States, once obsessively trolled Kristen Stewart on Twitter. She brought Saturday Night Live viewers up to speed during her opening monologue this week.

It happened in 2012, when Stewart was caught up in an on-again/off-again situation with her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson. Trump, just a reality TV celebrity back then, fired off 11 tweets urging RPattz to ditch KStew, who "cheated on him like a dog."

We can't make this stuff up.

Before moving on to other topics, Kristen had a parting shot for her stalker-in-chief: "Donald, if you didn't like me then, you're really probably not going to like me now because I'm hosting SNL and I'm, like, soooo gay, dude." Read more...

How the city of Atlanta finally fell in love with Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan

You could hear it late in the season, a thunderous chorus of Atlantans all chanting the same three letters, again and again.

"M-V-P! M-V-P! M-V-P!"

Throughout the Falcons' 11-5 season and their impressive playoff run all the way to the Super Bowl, the chants grew louder as the team inched closer to the ever-elusive championship. The man who fans had deemed an NFL MVP — quarterback Matt Ryan — kept playing like one.

Ryan is Atlanta's franchise cornerstone, a Falcons veteran of nine seasons. He's the leader of the team's dynamic offense, a field general with the arm strength to make plays you'd usually see in video games.  Read more...

This goofy 1908 children's book traces the path of a bullet with a literal hole in the pages

IMage: Internet Archive

In 1908, author and artist Peter Newell published The Hole Book, a fancifully illustrated children’s tale that incorporates a literal hole in the pages to trace the trajectory of an accidentally-fired bullet

The errant projectile sows chaos through a variety of scenes, shattering fishbowls, perforating hats and detonating gas tanks before coming to rest in a particularly dense cake.

Newell had previously built a career on his humorous drawings and poems in outlets such as Harper’s Bazaar and the Saturday Evening Post.

In addition to The Hole Book, he published other conceptually playful children’s books, including a compendium of pictures and poems that could be viewed upside-down or right-side-up, and a rhomboid-shaped volume, The Slant Book, that traces a rogue baby carriage’s topsy-turvy descent down a hill. 'SNL' shares a new 'Welcome to the USA' video for Trump's America

In Trump's United States, all visitors are welcome ... unless they come from one of seven predominantly Muslim nations, self-identify as Muslim, or just look too darn brown.

That's the message communicated in the newly updated U.S. customs "welcome" video, which Saturday Night Live helpfully edited to account for Trump's controversial immigration ban. It would be funny if it weren't so difficult to separate jokes from grim reality.

It's that special time of year again when the two best teams in the NFL go head-to-head to finally crown a champion. But the real show, as always, is going to be that sweet, sweet refereeing. It has been an exciting playoffs, as the referees have called every penalty from delay of game to illegal motion, and frankly, we can't get enough!

Kristen Stewart turns a Super Bowl party into an erotic French film on 'SNL'

Saturday Night Live's vision of Super Bowl Sunday starts out innocently enough.

A bunch of dudes are hanging out to watch the big game while the woman of the house (Vanessa Bayer) — an outdated stereotype who doesn't get sports and only exists to please her man — cooks pizza rolls. On the surface, it's a Totino's ad.

Then, Sabine (Kristen Stewart) shows up and the whole thing turns into a French love affair over pizza rolls. Then we get the twist: It's not a pizza roll commercial, it's a movie trailer for Cannes submission and surefire Palmes d'Or contender ..Totíno.

A group of New Yorkers came together to remove swastikas from a subway car

A group of New York City subway riders came together to remove Nazi imagery sprawled across a train on Saturday night.

Documented in a Facebook post by Gregory Locke, passengers in a Manhattan 1 train pooled resources to remove swastikas and hate speech from the train. According to Locke, swastikas had been drawn in Sharpie across every window and advertisement in the train car.

According to Locke, one passenger explained that hand sanitizer removes Sharpie and began scrubbing the messages off of the windows. More passengers quickly joined in, clearing the train car of hateful imagery in two minutes. Read more...

Leslie Jones lost it when she impersonated Samuel L. Jackson on 'SNL'

You'd think Saturday Night Live's Super Bowl-centric "Celebrity Family Feud" sketch would have been ripe for political humor, given the Trump vs. Atlanta narrative that has surfaced.

As it turns out, not so much! The real stars of this sketch are Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, as Justin Bieber and Samuel L. Jackson, respectively. McKinnon is her typically over-the-top self — a perfect fit for the Biebs — and Jones breaks hard as she channels Jackson's profanity-laden tirades.

Beck Bennett also gets a thumbs up as straight man and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who seems to still harbor a grudge after Deflategate. Read more...

The devastating 1889 Johnstown Flood killed over 2,000 people in minutes

A tree protrudes from a house tossed by the flood.

Image: Bettmann/Getty Images

On the morning of May 31, 1889, Elias Unger, the president of Pennsylvania’s South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, awoke from a night of heavy rain to an impending catastrophe.

Just below his home, swollen by ongoing rainfall, the artificial reservoir of Lake Conemaugh appeared to be on the verge of overwhelming the notoriously leaky South Fork Dam impounding it.

Unger sent urgent warnings to nearby towns and rallied a crew to try to relieve the pressure on the dam by creating spillways, to no avail

An hour and a half after Unger ordered his men off the eroding dam, it collapsed, freeing 20 million tons of water to charge downstream. Read more...

Brutally honest ad for a 2002 Oldsmobile brings the internet infinite joy

You know it's a dark day in America when a used car salesman is more capable of telling the truth than the president.

A Facebook ad for a 2002 Oldsmobile went viral this weekend for all the right reasons. Instead of trying to oversell what is undoubtedly a deeply terrible car, the advertiser keeps it honest with folks. This is a predictably awful, cheap car that probably won't kill you. Yet.

Twitter user kel121121 shared a screenshot of the ad, which has since been retweeted 72,000 times.

"Don't bring your ass down here saying it looks different in pics or you didn't know it had that much rust. I'm telling you now. This bitch rusty," the ad reads. Read more...

Snapchat drops Snapbot in Houston, lands best free Super Bowl advertising

The biggest brands spend millions each year on 30-second ads for the Super Bowl.

But one of the year's big names didn't have to craft a commercial to get attention on one of TV's biggest nights.

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, dropped a Snapbot — its interactive vending machine that dispenses the limited-edition Spectacles — in Houston, Texas on Sunday. It appeared near Pet Kingdom Park, surrounded by puppies, in honor of the annual Puppy Bowl.

Now, those attending the Super Bowl or simply those nearby in Houston can pick up Spectacles, the video-camera sunglasses that sell for $130 each.  Read more...

Here are all the best Super Bowl commercials in one place

The Super Bowl: the one time of year people not only tolerate but actively seek out commercials.

Hell, if you're a cord-cutter or DVR owner with an ad blocker, it may be the one time of year you actually see commercials.

Perhaps you were hoping this year's commercial breaks might provide an escape from our country's current political insanity. Wrong!

Budweiser probably didn't expect its German immigrant founder's story to be so controversial when it was greenlit last October, but it's taken on new meaning in our current political climate. One construction supply company even tried to include a border wall in its ad, but Fox wouldn't have it. Read more...

People can't stop sharing this cartoon about Trump's 'Muslim ban'

Last week, President Trump gleefully signed a defacto Muslim ban, hoping to ban green card and permanent resident holders from seven Muslim-majority countriesOn Friday, the Constitution caught up with him.

On Friday, Seattle judge (and Bush appointee) James Robart issued a temporary nationwide restraining order, lifting the ban nationwide. President Trump had a typical Twitter meltdown and appealed the judgment. Later, a U.S. appeals court denied the Justice Department's request to reinstate the travel ban, shutting him down, once again.

Shyamalan's 'Split' tries to hold off 'Rings' at the box office

The Sixth Sense, Signs, The Last Airbender, and The Village. Those are the only four M. Night Shyamalan movies to have earned more domestically than Split.

The James McAvoy-led horror flick picked up an estimated $14.6 million in its third weekend, which was good enough for a three-peat at #1 in the domestic box office. That's a feat director M. Night Shyamalan hasn't pulled off since The Sixth Sense (which spent five weekends at #1).

The third weekend estimate brings Split's domestic take to $98.7 million, just edging out Shyamalan's cult hit, Unbreakable, which ended its 2000/2001 domestic run at $95 million. It's an impressive 17-day performance that only stands to improve. Read more...
