Of course Cate Blanchett joined an Adele performance at a drag show at Stonewall in a pussy hat

There are certain basic comforts we, as a species, have come to rely on, like anesthetics during surgery and Netflix. Now we can add watching footage of Cate Blanchett at drag shows whenever we're sad to the list.

Blanchett stopped by the historic Stonewall Inn on Monday night to perform in a benefit drag show, and, because she is incapable of failure, her efforts were nothing short of a masterpiece. The show raised our spirits and a chunk of change for Newtown Action Alliance, which provides support to communities affected by gun violence.

The worst 'Game of Thrones' villain is heading to the Marvel universe

Game of Thrones alum Iwan Rheon, who played literal and figurative bastard Ramsay Bolton, is heading to the Marvel universe for ABC's new Inhumans series, it was announced Tuesday.

Sticking with type, Rheon will play the villain Maximus — aka "Maximus the Mad" — brother of lead character Black Bolt.

In the show, Maximus is described by Marvel as a clever and charming Inhuman that is fiercely devoted to the people of Attilan, especially his brother, the King – although he harbors an intense desire to wear the crown himself.

ABC's Inhumans will premiere its first two episodes in Imax theaters for a two-week run before the series airs on television. Read more...

The first manned hoverbike could finally fulfill your 'Star Wars' dreams

Are you ready to live out your wildest speeder bike dreams? A Russian drone-building startup just dropped some crazy new video showcasing the closest thing we've seen to Return of the Jedi's famous vehicles IRL.

Hoversurf's newest prototype, the Scorpion-3, is a single-seat electric quadcopter that looks to be the world's first fully rideable hoverbike. The vehicle, which can be controlled by a human pilot or remotely as a drone, could be used in the future for transport, shipping cargo, and more—once everyone gets adjusted to those dangerous-looking propellors spinning right next to the pilot's legs.   Read more...

Lindsey Lohan claims she was profiled in an airport while wearing a headscarf

Lindsay Lohan is turning heads again, but this time it’s for a reason a lot more serious than her accent.

While visiting Good Morning Britain, hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid asked the actress a series of questions about Islam, Trump's presidency and Lohan's experience reading the Quran. But what was particularly interesting was Lohan's claims of being singled out at an airport because she was wearing a headscarf.

She explained that while flying into New York recently, she got stopped because of her headscarf and was double-checked by security. Lohan doesn't always wear one, but said she happened to don one out of "personal respect" while leaving Turkey, where she had met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.   Read more...

Uber's ratings are in the toilet

Things just keep getting worse for Uber.

With #DeleteUber trending once again following allegations of sexism from a former employee, disgruntled users are taking to the App Store to vent.

Uber's app currently has an abysmal 1.6-star average rating in the U.S App Store, despite its rank as the No. 10 app overall, according to app analytics company App Annie. Though its lifetime rating stands at 3.7, it's received 3,941 one-star reviews in the last 30 days, pushing down its overall score.

Many of the poor ratings appear to be directly tied to the company's policies, rather than the performance of the app itself. Numerous users cite the allegations of sexism and harassment made by former engineer Susan J. Fowler, whose blog post detailing her time at Uber went viral over the weekend. Read more...

Short film celebrates the powerful connection between generations of activists

It's crucial to value and learn from the work of older activists, especially as the resistance builds and strengthens during the Trump era.

A moving new short film called Together We Rise celebrates the importance of intergenerational activism, and recognizes the trailblazers of decades past. In less than two minutes, the largely silent film illustrates how connections between older and younger activists are necessary in order to sustain a movement.

Directed by visual artist and producer Francesca Beltran, Together We Rise was first screened on Jan. 21 at the Women's March on Washington, which commissioned the film. The video, however, was only just released online by the march's organizers. Read more...

It's not aliens. It's never aliens. Stop saying it's aliens.

On Wednesday, NASA will make an announcement about a "discovery beyond our solar system."

Pretty cool and mysterious sounding, right?

According to the space agency, the announcement is specifically related to "planets that orbit stars other than our sun,  known as exoplanets."

Cool, cool. Exoplanets are a big deal in space science these days so it makes sense that NASA would plug the finding in a press event of some kind.

4-year-old's anti-Trump dinosaur protest gives us the fuel we need to stay woke

Since Donald Trump was elected to the presidency, protests have rocked both the nation and the world. Millions of people got up, made signs and gathered to make their voice and thoughts heard.

On a little patch of Washington D.C. earth, a similar protest is also quietly underway. Signs have been carefully made, and participants are standing firm.

The difference is that the signs here are the size of an index card and the protesters are plastic dinosaurs.

Apple might be creating its own version of Bitmoji

There's been a lot of Snapchat-copying going on in the tech world lately, with Facebook being one of the main culprits.

But the social media giant isn't alone. Another tech juggernaut appears to be cribbing from the ephemeral messaging app, as well. On Monday, Apple was granted a patent for an "avatar editing environment" that looks a lot like Bitmoji, the popular app from Snapchat-owned Bitstrips

The patent document, which was first picked up by Mic, says this theoretical product would allow users to create custom avatars for "online games and other applications." Starting with a blank face, users can add, rescale and resize features like eyes, a nose and a mouth. They can also modify face shapes and skin color and will be able to choose whether to create the avatar automatically or manually.  Read more...

Libraries are fighting back hard against Trump's America

Perhaps libraries and President Donald Trump were destined to be enemies.

The president has made it known that he's not a man of books. Libraries, meanwhile, are filled with many more books than people. The president has made it known he's not a fan of immigration. Libraries are often an integral part of the life of immigrants in the United States. These things are not like each other.

Protest has taken many forms in the few weeks since Trump became president, but one of the most distinct forms of demonstration has taken place at libraries around the United States.  Read more...

Intense battle between an octopus and crab ends with a surprise

Nature can be absolutely brutal sometimes.

An unnamed diver captured an intense fight between a crab and a small octopus off the coast of Monterey, California, earlier this month. In the clip, the octopus tries its very best to get a nice crab dinner, but the crab was pretty intent on staying alive. After a few tense minutes, the fight abruptly ends when player three enters the game.

According to the diver, who submitted the footage to Viral Hog, the harbor seal, named Whiskers, who interrupted the fight has a habit of following around divers and using their flashlights to catch an easy meal.  Read more...

The Comcast streaming video platform has launched a new series from The Cut called Dan and Dietrich Play Would You Rather.

For example: Would you rather eat the entire McDonald's menu deep fried or blended together into a smoothie? Take a poop in front of 10 strangers or live stream it? Get shot with a rubber bullet or get tased? Watch porn with your parents or fight an MMA fighter?  Read more...

How one construction company is thinking outside the box

But one look at a home built by LA-based Binishells is all it takes to realize that this construction company is doing things differently — and thinking outside the box.

A tech company just gave walking meme Ken Bone a job as 'chief people officer'

With a perfectly corny, safely politically neutral ad about politics, undecided voter Ken Bone is still squeezing out the last drops of internet fame.

Bone, in case you forgot, was the man who shot to internet celeb status during the second presidential debate last fall. Dressed in a red zip-up cardigan, he asked a friendly middle-of-the-road question about energy policy amid a frankly nasty political climate. That was enough for him to be quickly embraced as the much-needed "can't we all just get along" meme of the moment.

His fleeting fame also came with some less-than-savory discoveries about his internet past. Nonetheless, his image and a Twitter following of 224,000 have managed to persist. Read more...

The first ever self-driving car race ended in a crash

For the first time ever, self-driving race cars zoomed through a course in public, with impressive (well, for one of them, anyway) results.

Roborace, the self-driving racing series Formula E announced in 2015, made history with its first public trial race at the Buenos Aires ePrix last weekend.

The two competitors: Devbots 1 and 2, which raced each other in a sprint around the Puerto Madero street circuit.

Roborace says the winning Devbot 1 hit a top speed of 186 kph (115 mph) during the contest. Formula E's normal manned cars can reach about 225 kph (140 mph), not waaay faster than the self-driving car. That said, it was only driving with one other car on the course — adding more competitors to the field could slow it down a bit.    Read more...

Why sex harassment scandals like Uber's are bound to persist in tech

If you thought tech companies were succeeding, even incrementally, at creating more inclusive workplaces, it's not entirely your fault.

Headline after headline suggests that influential Silicon Valley executives understand they have a problem and are working to fix it. But a serious scandal like the one Uber now faces, following damning allegations of sexual harassment and corporate negligence, is all it takes to shatter the optimism. And this one likely won't be the last.

The truth is that while some of the biggest names in tech — Facebook, Yahoo, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Airbnb — at least nominally support inclusivity by releasing annual diversity reports, we don't know much about what they're doing to change their male-dominated cultures. Dozens of other startups and companies stand idly by, perhaps happy to enjoy the glow of perceived progress without publicly working for it. Meanwhile, a female engineer like Susan J. Fowler, who recently documented her jaw-dropping experiences at Uber in a blog post, may find herself in an abusive work environment where sexual harassment goes unpunished and the victim becomes the pariah.  Read more...

There's not enough medical marijuana in Australia, so it's speeding up imports

While Australia is increasingly pro-medical cannabis, it's still hard to get your hands on the stuff if you're in need (and have a prescription).

The government has indicated it's open to speeding things up, with Health Minister Greg Hunt announcing Wednesday that authorities will allow more rapid importation of the drug while a domestic supply is built. Medical cannabis is often used to alleviate pain associated with cancer as well as epilepsy.

Importers will now be allowed to buy from "a reputable supplier overseas," and store it locally to be distributed via doctors approved to supply medicinal cannabis products. The change is intended to counter delays for patients prescribed medicinal cannabis, who currently have to rely on "case by case" imports from overseas. Read more...

But just when you finally get your standing desk approved by your office manager, another study declares that standing for prolonged periods is equally as threatening to your health. Read more...

In an ivory gown, Australian woman Justine Clarke, 26, turned heads at the South Australian state final of Miss World Australia on Sunday.

Rich people deserve more nice things, so here's a bowling alley just for them

Do you have an obscene amount of money? Are you also inexplicably obsessed with bowling?

Then boy are you in luck, because a bowling alley in Melbourne, Australia has popped up that will set you back at least A$10,000 ($7,691) for a mere three hours-worth of play. Of course, you're also in luck generally, because you've got A$10,000 to blow on absolutely nothing.

The so-called "Pins Royale" experience has been unveiled as part of the new Kingpin Complex in Melbourne's Crown plaza.

It looks like a lot of fun — if standing in a shiny-looking room while eating disgustingly rich food and playing a game designed largely for children and drunk people is your thing. Read more...

Blogger learns that it's never OK to talk down pizza

Here's a life tip: Never, ever talk ill of pizza.

While there recently have been arguments over what exactly should go on pizza, there will be hell to pay for those who try to get people to stop eating it.

As a Nigerian fitness website called Naija Gym Blog found out over Twitter, when it received the wrath of the internet when tried to badmouth pizza.

Japan zoo kills 57 monkeys carrying 'invasive alien' genes

A Japanese zoo has killed 57 snow monkeys by lethal injection, after they were found to be carrying genes of an "invasive alien species."

One third of the monkeys at the Takagoyama Nature Zoo were found to have been crossbred with the rhesus macaque.

The rhesus macaque, which is native to parts of India and China, is banned in Japan, and therefore categorised as an "invasive alien species."

The snow monkeys were believed to have escaped from their enclosure and bred with the wild monkeys outside the facility.

The monkeys had "to be killed to protect the indigenous environment," an official told the Japan Times. Read more...

The Dot braille smartwatch is finally getting shipped out to patient buyers

SEOUL — Next week, the Dot smartwatch will finally hit shelves, offering a sleek timepiece for the blind.

The watch is coming to the market after nearly three years of repeated stops and starts.

Unlike most assistive smartwatches for the blind which rely on audio prompts, the Dot displays messages four braille characters at a time on its screen.

Its round face displays four cells of six balls each, and allows users to send simple replies or actions back through its two side buttons.

Dot, the eponymous South Korean startup behind the watch, has been developing the product since 2014, but hit delays in sorting out the display's durability, as the tiny moving parts were hard to protect while remaining tactile, it said. Read more...

Watch a man smash 124 coconuts in less than a minute. With his bare hands.

It's not that we have any personal vendetta against coconuts. But the amount of effort you need to invest to break them open is a deal-breaker for many of us. If you're one such soul, you've just found a new friend in Abeesh Domanic.

To say Domanic, 25, is good with coconuts would be an understatement. The resident of Southern Indian state of Kerala last week smashed all the world records when he cracked open 124 coconuts in less than one minute. With his bare hands.

I know what you're thinking: If there's ever a John Wick adaption in India, we would want to see Domanic in it. But until that happens, all we have is the video of him and coconuts not getting along very well. Read more...

18-year-old chess grandmaster gets kicked off Iran national team for not wearing a headscarf

An 18-year-old Iranian chess grandmaster has been kicked off the national team after she showed up for a game not wearing a hijab.

However, she failed to wear a hijab, or traditional headscarf, which is compulsory wear for Iranian women in public.

Derakhshani, who is a student in Spain, will be barred from representing Iran, as well as banned from playing in any tournaments in Iran.

Separately, her younger brother, Borna, was also playing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival. The 15-year-old was similarly barred from the team — a punishment for playing against Alexander Huzman, of Israel. Read more...

Badass cyclist gets revenge on catcalling van drivers

Getting catcalled is never a pleasant experience. And, sometimes it's not until after the event that we think about what we could have said or done

But, one London cyclist got her revenge on a van driver who was catcalling and verbally abusing her.

The cyclist — who was being filmed from behind on a motorcyclist's go-pro — had stopped at a traffic light when two men in a van began asking for her number. When they didn't get the desired response, they began verbally abusing her.

"You on your period?" asked one of the men before driving off down the road.

Just when the van drivers thought they'd got away with their behaviour, the cyclist caught up with the van and pulled off the wing mirror. Read more...

His controversial opinion spread like wildfire on social media, with everybody weighing in on the foodie debate.

Eventually, Guðni was forced to clarify his position, saying he liked pineapple, just not on pizzas.

This startup buys and fixes up languishing mobile games and tools

Major app stores are often littered with forgotten or neglected husks of software — apps that developers have, for whatever reason, long given up on updating or actively managing.

While some simply gather cobwebs, others maintain loyal followings of a respectable size despite their dilapidated code. In those latter cases, inattentive proprietors are often letting a steady stream of potential advertising dollars fall by the wayside.

'Nioh' speedrun took less than two hours because gods walk among us

Speedrunners have officially conquered Nioh. The new Team Ninja game that delivers Dark Souls-style RPG play in feudal Japan has now been completed in one hour and 40 minutes — by speedrunner Distortion2 — and you can see video proof above.

If you're wondering why that's so impressive, then you're probably not familiar with From Software's Souls games. They're a special breed of RPG, built with an eye toward extreme challenge above all. They're also lengthy adventures, with playtimes climbing into the double-digit hours.

Nioh appropriates the core ideas of the Souls games, but it features faster-paced combat. That doesn't mean the game is any shorter, however. Most reports put the story mode at a minimum of 20 hours — so "under two hours" is pretty wild.  Read more...

People on Twitter are so confused by Russia's attempt to debunk 'fake news'

Zakharova said the page would bust inaccurate posts from mainstream media and officials in the West and link back to reliable data.

However, the section, entitled “Examples of publications posting false information about Russia”,  at the moment just consists of five screenshots of news pieces with a big red stamp reading "FAKE" and the line “This piece contains data that does not correspond to reality.”  Read more...

Apple's now the official owner of the website iCloud.net, which up until recently, had nothing to do with its iCloud storage and services website accessible at iCloud.com.

Ownership of iCloud.net was transferred to Apple sometime this week, TechCrunch reports. The site, which was owned by a software developer named Tong Lei, was a Chinese social network of sorts since its creation in 2011 and will be shut down at the end of the month.

In a blog post on Feb. 14, Lei said "iCloud.net finished his mission" and that it was time for him to retire.  Read more...

Seth Meyers pokes fun at awards show darlings in 'Oscar Bait' clip

La La Land. Carol. Manchester by the Sea. They're all critically acclaimed films. And they were all shamelessly released right before Oscar season.

To be fair, so was "Oscar Bait," a new Seth Meyers clip that pokes fun at the curious annual influx of poignant cinema around Nov. 1. Yes, all the trappings of an Oscar nominee are here: jarring visual effects, a child actor with three names and a rare disease called "balloon foot," for example.

Wait, should this win an Oscar? Read more...

Banks are finally taking on Venmo — and have a money-transfer app of their own

For years, banks have watched as their youngest customers split restaurant checks, shared utility bills, and pitched in for parties using third-party payment apps such as Venmo. Now, they're trying to take back the person-to-person payments business by launching an app of their own.

Nineteen banks, including Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, and Wells Fargo, are teaming up to start Zelle, a web site and app that will let users send and request money much like Venmo does. Bank of America says it is the first to incorporate all of Zelle's capabilities—including the ability to split bills between users—into its own mobile app, starting today. A standalone Zelle payment app should be available to anyone with a debit card, regardless of where they bank, by the middle of the year. Read more...

Amber Tamblyn and David Cross have my permission to name all celebrity babies

Celebrity baby names have become a total snooze.

Where have all the Audio Sciences gone? Blake Lively couldn't even throw us a bone by naming her kid after Taylor Swift. Instead, she and Ryan Reynolds went with the lovely and admittedly unexpected name Inez. The last truly great branding of a celebrity offspring was clearly Saint West.

But, as we prepare to welcome Beyoncé's twins to the world, Amber Tamblyn and David Cross have given us hope in the time we need it most. Tamblyn gave birth to the couple's first child, a daughter, and announced on Instagram with a cute video that her name is Dauphinoise Petunia Brittany Scheherazade Von Funkinstein Mustard Witch RBG Cross Tamblyn-Bey Jr.  Read more...

Twitter helps brands become more than faceless monoliths to their customers

Next time you seek out customer service through a Twitter message, you may find yourself talking to an actual human rather than a corporate account.

The social network now lets brands display avatars and names of individual employees in direct-message conversations, while still operating through the company’s main profile. The new tool will also more clearly indicate when you are talking to an automated bot.

The feature launched Wednesday with T-Mobile signed on as the only advertiser partner.

The move is grounded in Twitter's market research that shows personalized customer service is around 20 percent more satisfying and productive to consumers than nameless corporate interactions. Read more...

This ‘Walking Dead’ shirt was banned from stores for racism

A shirt sporting a popular line from The Walking Dead was just discontinued by UK retailer Primark, after complaints regarding the racist history of the phrase.

The white t-shirt depicts Lucille—the name given to a barbed-wire wrapped bat owned by Walking Dead villain Negan, along with the phrase "eeny meenie miny moe"—a reference to the words spoken by Negan before deciding which Walking Dead character to kill off.

Ian Lucraft came across the shirt while shopping with his wife in the UK. He then spoke to The Sheffield Star this week about how "shocked" by how "fantastically offensive" he believed the shirt was.   Read more...

The Pope is still enjoying a one-way Twitter beef with Trump

It's been a busy few weeks since President Donald Trump was inaugurated but that hasn't kept one of our favorite feuds, between Trump and Pope Francis, from rolling on.

Admittedly, it's been a one-sided affair since the two first traded barbs last February over Trump's plans to build a wall. "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian," the pope said at the time. Trump called the pope "disgraceful" in response.

In recent times, the pope has continued to deliver shade at Trump's immigration policy in his tweets. Trump, so far, has not bitten back.  Read more...

SodaStream recalls some bottles since they might explode in your face

Believe it or not, repeatedly pumping carbon dioxide into a small bottle might just make it go boom. One line of bottles from DIY soft-drink maker SodaStream's has been declared particularly prone to explosions, so the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall.

The one-liter bottles in question have a blue tint and base, dishwasher safe labels and an expiration date of April 2020. When pressurized or shaken the bottles might burst and potentially injure bystanders. However, no one appears to have reported being injured by an exploding bottle — SodaStream's move is precautionary. Read more...

Chelsea Clinton remembers the good old days when fake news was about aliens

Remember the good old days when fake news was about space aliens instead of important political issues?

No? Well, luckily Chelsea Clinton does, and she's decided to enlighten us by sharing a scandalously hot fake news story from the 90s.

You may think that the fake news phenomenon originated during the 2016 presidential election, but Chelsea Clinton — whose mother, Hillary, was the subject of many barbaric headlines over the past few months — is here to remind us that fake news is nothing new and used to be a lot more fun.

Sure, over the years misinformative media outlets have gotten craftier in the way they present their information — making it more challenging to identify true from false — but in one epic tweet Clinton recalled one of several absurd extraterrestrial lies that were publicly spread about her family over a decade ago. Recut version of 'La La Land' directed by David Lynch looks more like a suspense thriller

Ford's self-driving cars won't have steering wheels because engineers maybe kept falling asleep

Will self-driving cars have steering wheels? Maybe not, if engineers keep falling asleep.

Ford's self-driving cars will skip over Level 3 — where cars are automated, but human drivers are still expected to take over if need be — to Level 4, where cars are basically fully autonomous except for extreme conditions. (Self-driving cars that would meet the requirements for Level 5 are still theoretical at this point.) The levels are defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE.

Automotive News reported that Ford came to that decision after its engineers fell asleep, lulled into a false sense of security with nothing much to do while driving Level 3 cars. Read more...

Seven Earth-sized planets orbit an alien star only 40 light-years away

A small, cool star in distant space plays host to something amazing.

Scientists have discovered that at least seven Earth-sized worlds circle the star TRAPPIST-1, a ultracool dwarf star only about 40 light-years (235 trillion miles) from Earth.

The planetary haul — which includes at least six rocky planets total, three of which were first discovered last year — is detailed in a new study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday.

This marks the first time so many Earth-sized worlds have been found orbiting the same star.  Read more...

Switch storage limits take Nintendo gaming back to the '90s

Nintendo seemingly has one thing to say about our supposedly "all digital" future: LOL.

The upcoming Switch features a downright minuscule 32GB of built-in storage, and that number comes down even more once you account for the operating system and basic apps. It's so small, in fact, that one of the console's launch titles in Japan won't actually fit.

A newly updated listing of Switch games lays out storage requirements for each one, and from it we learn that Dragon Quest Heroes I+II is a 32GB game. It even says right there on the game's info page (translated from Japanese): "A microSD card of 32GB or more is required separately." Read more...

That's it, Netflix just cornered the comedy-special market

Netflix is making damn sure Netflix gets the last laugh.

The streaming giant on Wednesday announced Louis C.K. will debut two new stand-up comedy specials exclusively on the platform. The six-time Emmy winner joins Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, Amy Schumer ... and just about all the other big name comedians who have taken their jokes to Netflix in exchange for its global audience and big paycheck.

Last year, Netflix announced that after an eight-year absence from doing stand-up, Chris Rock will tape two new specials that will debut on Netflix worldwide. Netflix reportedly outbid HBO by dishing out a whopping $40 million.  Read more...

Peter Thiel company reportedly helped NSA spy program

Peter Thiel is a man who enjoys both the having of cake and the putting of that cake into the largest hole in his face.

He's written that "A free press is vital for public debate," yet financed a lawsuit that bankrupted Gawker Media. He's buddy-buddy with "America First" President Donald Trump, but if his friend winds up ruining the United States, Thiel's got citizenship in New Zealand. And now, thanks to a report by The Intercept, it sounds like Thiel has worked to sharpen government surveillance while his company (and he) has claimed a fondness for privacy.

Falling ice chunk demolishing car provides another reason to hate winter

Anyone blessed to live in an area with heavy snowfalls and winter weather knows the dangers that come along with the climate.

A camera captured two extremely lucky men narrowly avoiding a huge chunk of ice that fell onto their vehicle as they were exiting. Just a moment before the impact, the two look up, likely because they were warned or could hear the ice as it started to slide off the roof.

The car sustained the majority of the impact and it appears as if both men escaped without any major injuries. We just hope they had "ice falling from the sky" coverage on their insurance.   Read more...

Peeps Oreos taste nothing like Peeps, and that's a good thing

Peeps, adorable as they are, do not taste good.

That's fine! Your mom doesn't stock up on Peeps every spring for the flavor. No, she buys them for their squishy little chick-like shape and their unbelievably stabile shelf life.

So when Peeps Oreos landed on our desks, we were skeptical. These new, limited edition sandwich cookies feature a vanilla wafer with a hot pink "Marshmallow PEEPS FLAVOR CREME" filling, blended with fine sugar crystals that mimic the original marshmallow's crunchy coating.

We tore open the package, sampled the cookies and were pleasantly surprised to find that these Oreos taste pretty much nothing like a Peep. Read more...

Earnest little girl tries her best to make oatmeal despite not understanding recipe

Let's be clear: This little girl is really trying her best.

It's not her fault that recipes can be very confusing. It's not her fault that the word "cup" in English can mean many different things. It's not her fault that she probably hasn't learned about measurements yet.

All this girl wants is to help her family make oatmeal. Even though she is going to need a lot of help to get there because she doesn't know what she is doing, her intentions are so pure and we love her for that. Read more...

Google wants to give you back your face when you're in VR

The blank, robotic VR masks seen in mixed reality videos could soon receive a facial fix that's pretty cool but also kind of creepy, just like any good advancement in technology should be.

In a new blog post on the Google Research Blog (hat tip to The Verge), a few researchers from the tech giant discuss the process of replacing the blocky VR headset with an image of the user's face for mixed reality videos — videos that show both the VR user and the virtual reality around them.

The researchers hope they might eventually be able to extend this "headset removal" technique beyond mixed reality videos and into the VR world itself, increasing engagement and social interaction. Read more...

Rivers in the sky: Why California is flooding

It's hard to believe that after five years of record drought, many Californians are hoping that this winter's weekly deluges will come to a swift conclusion. The latest storm, which struck over the weekend and ended on Tuesday, has forced thousands to evacuate, including urban residents in San Jose, as floodwaters continue to rise and levees are strained.

This winter demonstrates how too much of a good thing — in this case, rain and mountain snow — can lead to severe problems.

This is increasingly important, since human-caused global warming is already causing both ends of the weather extremes spectrum — too little water and too much — to occur more frequently and with greater intensity. Read more...

A couple took 'breakup photos' and they're still pretty sad about the whole thing

Harrison and Jackie broke up in 2015.

At the end of 2016, they had a photoshoot. A breakup photoshoot. For their breakup.

They dated in high school, tried to make it work while attending college separated by a few thousand miles of farmland, and eventually the distance drew them apart. three and a half years into their relationship, they ended it.

Fast forward to New Year's Eve 2016. If you're doing the math along with me, you'll note that's a bit over a year since the breakup, and for reference, they hadn't seen each other since then.  Read more...
