Ashton Kutcher blew a kiss at John McCain and lol what is happening?

What the world needs now is love, sweet love — and if we need to rely on John McCain and Ashton Kutcher to help us achieve that, then so be it.

On Wednesday morning, Kutcher, dreamy actor and chairman of Thorn, a tech company that builds software to fight human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of children, attended a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing in D.C. to speak about how to end modern slavery.

After Kutcher's speech concluded, however, the world was given a quick glimpse at an, um, unexpected moment between him and Sen. John McCain.

It started with sass and ended with a kiss ... Read more...

Couple had romantic Valentine's Day dinner... on a New York City subway platform

New York City subways are grimy, loud and not the most romantic place to celebrate a relationship—but for some reason, none of that stopped Mohammad Choudry from choosing a subway platform as the location for a Valentine's Date dinner.

With a makeshift dinner table adorned with balloons, Choudry surprised his wife of nine years, Johnnybell Sanchez, on the platform Monday night.

Under a new bill, the EPA would die on the last day of 2018

So much for ponderous legislation that's too lengthy for lawmakers to read before voting. A new bill that would have sweeping consequences for every resident of the U.S., and in fact the world at large, contains just a single, all-important sentence.

The bill, sponsored by freshman Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, seeks to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

As in, get rid of it entirely. Bing, bong, boom, poof... gone. Just like that! Who knew that destroying an entire bureaucracy could be so easy?

Dads, like moms, are at risk of depression after a child’s birth, researchers report

New dads are at risk of experiencing the same symptoms of postpartum depression as women who’ve just given birth — despite the fact that their bodies don’t go through the same sort of changes.

A paper published Wednesday in JAMA Psychiatry finds that just over four percent of new fathers experience elevated symptoms of depression after their children are born.

The idea of postpartum depression among new dads is a relatively new one, and the study’s authors say raising awareness about the issue is a critical first step. That, combined with screenings, could help catch symptoms of depression among new fathers and treat them early. Read more...

Let #GandalftheGuide show you New Zealand in this photo series

"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us," said Gandalf in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

New Zealand has become inextricably linked to Tolkien's story due to the fact that the film adaptations were shot there. An untold number of people have visited the country just so they could stand in the closest place we have to Middle Earth.

Amateur photographer Akhil Suhas embarked on his own six-month road trip across New Zealand, but he didn't want it to be just any trip filled with just any photos. He was looking for a unique way of capturing the beauty of New Zealand. Read more...

You can now apply and interview for a job entirely within Facebook

The fear of a job recruiter stalking your Facebook account just got shook up.

Starting Wednesday, Facebook users can apply to a job directly on the social network. So if you're browsing Facebook all day because your job is boring, you're really in luck with this new feature.

Facebook Pages in the U.S. and Canada can now put up a job posting just as they would "a photo or a cat video," Facebook exec Andrew Bosworth said with a smile as he presented his pitch deck to Mashable. The user then simply taps a few buttons to apply.

Cat videos are fun. Jobs ... quite serious. And it's a serious endeavor for Facebook, which has come a long way from organizing college parties to helping small business owners navigate the internet.  Read more...

Under Armour CEO walks back his Trump praise with full-page newspaper ad

'All Our Wrong Todays' is your next fast-reading, mind-expanding, science fiction romance

If you're a fan of books that leave you gaping open-mouthed like Keanu Reeves at the end of The Matrix when you turn the final page, you're going to love All Our Wrong Todays

This is a debut novel by Canadian screenwriter Elan Mastai, whose work you might know if you've seen the Daniel Radcliffe movie What If. Mastai reportedly received an eye-popping $1.25 million advance for All Our Wrong Todays. Naturally the hype level around the novel, out this month, has been high.

I'm pleased to report that the hope lives up to the hypeAll Our Wrong Todays is the endearing transdimensional tale of Tom Barren. Barren is the indolent son of a great scientist in a flying car-filled, there's-my-jetpack version of 2016. The Microsoft Surface Studio is an illustrator's dream

For the two weeks that the Microsoft Surface Studio sat at my desk, it attracted a lot of attention. I'm an illustrator and I work with a lot of other creatives, and artists love to look at something beautiful. There were plenty of “Oohs” and “Aahs,” and the beautiful simplicity of the device was demonstrated when, for about 15 minutes, five co-workers gathered around my desk as we went on a tour of the world via Google Maps.

Navigating a 3D satellite view of New York City became a magical experience. Swiping a single finger on the screen allowed for rotating vistas that looked incredible. Was this a high point of artistic achievement? No. Was it insanely fun and beautiful, just because it was on the Studio? Yep. Read more...

Now we know how Elon Musk really feels about the Muslim travel ban

Elon Musk, the closest person we have to the living embodiment of Bruce Wayne, just accidentally revealed feelings about President Donald Trump's embattled travel ban that are stronger than he previously let on.

A series of tweets went out on Musk's Twitter account Wednesday afternoon, decrying the ban on travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries as "not right."

That's a few steps up on the criticism scale from the subtle shade Trump's economic adviser threw at the ban on travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries last month. The ban has been struck down by courts three times since Trump signed the executive order instituting it. Read more...

The very first IMAX VR arcade just opened and it's already pretty popular

For the last couple of years, I've been telling any VR company I meet that to truly take the technology mainstream, they need to move beyond mobile to virtual reality arcades.

Just one block from the movie theaters of The Grove shopping center in Los Angeles, IMAX VR will house 14 pods. Well, they aren't actually "pods," but large, rectangular spaces specifically devoted to various VR experiences.

Why you can't get a Sweetgreen salad on Thursday in D.C.

You might want to pack your own lunch Thursday.

In an email from the co-founders to customers and posted at the stores, the note said all 18 D.C. locations would be closed. Why cord-cutters should (kind of) be excited about Comcast's new Xfinity Stream app

Comcast Xfinity subscribers will be treated to a tricked-out new mobile TV experience later this month.

Xfinity Stream is an overhauled app that will serve as a replacement for the cable giant's current on-the-go platform, Xfinity TV.

The new app adds a slew of features to Comcast's mobile entertainment suite — but perhaps most importantly, it will serve as a stepping stone for the cable provider's $15 a month cord-cutting internet TV service, Stream TV, as it preps for a launch into markets nationwide.

For customers with full Comcast Xfinity subscriptions, the Stream app will grant its users access to over 200 live TV channels and over 40,000 movie titles and TV shows for streaming on demand via internet connection. "Thousands" of the on-demand options will be downloadable for offline viewing, but there are no details available about what exactly will qualify.    Read more...

This pollinating bee drone shows the powers of these endangered creatures

Bees in the U.S. are more endangered than ever, requiring protection under the Endangered Species Act for the very first time back in October.

Now a college student in Georgia is showing the world just how environmentally vital these creatures really are — by creating a bee drone that pollinates flowers.

Anna Haldewang, a 24-year-old senior at the Savannah College of Art and Design, created a black and yellow device called Plan Bee as a design project for a class.

It's a single prototype that's made out of foam, plastic and a set of propellers that takes it into the air. When you flip the hand-sized drone upside down, it looks like a flower with six little sections that mimic petals. Those sections each contain tiny holes that the drone uses to suck in pollen. From there, the drone stores that pollen and later releases it during cross-pollination. Read more...

Artist creates satirical 'monument' to Donald Trump in VR

While you're sitting on the sidelines wondering if VR is worth the cost of entry, visual artists are embracing the medium — and making political statements in the process.

One of those artists is Dante Orpilla, a Los Angeles-based traditional painter and illustrator who just picked up the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive a few months ago. Orpilla, who also happens to work full-time at Reddit as a designer, uses the full range of VR tools to lay out his vision, including Oculus apps Quill and Medium

This privacy app may work for White House aides, but it's still a mystery

Endorsements are a solid way to vault a product into a new stratosphere, and there are perhaps few better endorsements than the White House.

Signal and WhatsApp are the current darlings for anyone interested in sending secure texts on their phone, but an app called Confide got a huge — uh — signal boost on Monday when The Washington Post reported that staffers at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue were using it because they are afraid of being "accused of talking to the media."

But how exactly does Confide work, and how secure is it?

Confide's website stakes the app's appeal on three pillars. First, it claims "military-grade" encryption. Second, the texts disappear as soon as they're read. Third, your messages can't be screenshotted. This all fits with the app's motto of sorts, which is that they believe texts should be as private as "the spoken word."  Read more...

'Arrow' tackles the gun debate to 'start a conversation'

In the '80s, you could barely go a week without encountering a "Very Special Episode" of your favorite network sitcom or drama series. These days, most TV scribes leave the social commentary to late night hosts like Samantha Bee and John Oliver.

Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim is aiming to change that this week's installment, titled "Spectre of the Gun."

The sobering hour featured a gunman attacking City Hall, sparking a debate on gun control that exemplified the complex nature of the issue, with every member of Team Arrow offering a different perspective.

"I grew up on St. Elsewhere and Picket Fences and L.A. Law. I grew up in a time where it was commonplace — like literally every week — for a one-hour drama to tackle the issues of the day," Guggenheim told reporters at a preview screening of the episode earlier this week. "Somewhere along the line we got away from that, the whole industry got away from that. And now you have Black-ish and Carmichael Show, but as far as network dramas are concerned, [they're] really not tackling current events, current issues." Read more...

Watch this horrifying redback spider take out a snake

Size doesn't mean everything when you can offer up a lethal dose of poison in a single bite.

An auto shop called North Vic Engines in Cobram, Australia had an unexpected visit from a baby snake on Wednesday. Sadly for the snake, the shop's local redback spider was there to get rid of the intruder.

After trapping the snake in its web, the spider managed to sneak down and deliver a deadly bite to its back. The spider, native to Australia, is so venomous that it has proved to be been fatal in humans.

The shop followed up later with another video "for all the haters" who claimed that the snake in the original video was trapped on a hook instead of the spider's web. The snake in the new clip is clearly caught in a web. Read more...

Santana apologises for Beyoncé diss but when will he apologise for 'Smooth' feat. Rob Thomas?

The 69-year-old music legend responsible for the over-meme'd travesty that is "Smooth" had the nerve to criticise Beyoncé in an interview following the Grammys — weighing into the whole "who deserved the Album of the Year award the most" debate. And what he said shook the BeyHive to it's very core.

"I think that Adele won because she can sing, sing," Santana told AAP via the New Zealand Herald. Having enough rain and not too much. For the sun to warm us, but not too much. Climate change is set to change all that.

'Legion' recap: Episode 2 keeps us guessing

This recap contains spoilers for Legion Season 1, episode 2, titled "Chapter 2." If you're as lost as David Haller, refresh your memory with our recap of episode 1.

Legion’s second episode, “Chapter 2,” presented one fantastic foil for our hero David Haller: Jeremie Harris’s character Ptonomy, who appeared in the premiere but wasn’t properly introduced until now.

Where David has trouble remembering even crucial moments in his life, Ptonomy recalls everything that’s ever happened to him. David has made a cocoon of his past, wrapping himself in the nostalgia of scenes half-remembered. For Ptonomy there can be no nostalgia — romanticizing your past requires its edges be dulled, impossible when every memory is sharp as a blade. Read more...

Vandals removed all the train seats in this carriage and stacked 'em gently

You need a "DGAF" attitude to start vandalising public property, but whoever did this is on a whole new level of ennui.

A train carriage near Sydney, Australia had its seats pulled off, then stacked so they perfectly blocked one end of a train's exit. Now that's boredom.

The sight was discovered by commuter Steve Mateer on Tuesday night, who also scratched his head at who possibly had the time to create such a scene.

"It must've taken them 10-15 minutes to do the whole thing," he told 7 News. "With stations about five minutes apart, I don't know how they did that." Read more...

Heroic dog 'Oddball' dies after a long life, protecting tiny penguins

Last week, a dog died. Not just any dog. It was Oddball, the famous maremma.

Oddball was a lot of things: A penguin protector (seriously), loyal companion and the inspiration for a hit film, based on her life.

Oddball was part of a pioneering project developed by Allan 'Swampy' Marsh in order to protect the fairy penguin population of Middle Island in Australia's south-west Victoria from local foxes and other assorted predators.

She was the very first dog sent to the island as part of the Middle Island Maremma Project, and definitively proved that maremmas were capable of protecting the at-risk penguin population. Read more...

Ashton Kutcher wants the haters to know: Ending child trafficking is his job

Ashton Kutcher wants you to know what his day job is. And no, it's not acting.

The one-time film star appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Wednesday to talk about his efforts to combat human trafficking and child exploitation, as well his other "day job" — being the father of two children.

Kutcher was there as a representative of Thorn, a company he cofounded that creates anti-trafficking software.

"I'm here today to defend the right to pursue happiness," he told the committee. "But the right to pursue happiness for so many is stripped away. It's raped, it's abused, it's taken by force, fraud or coercion ... It's sold for the momentary happiness of another." Read more...

ZTE's next phone will have gigabit download speeds

China's ZTE has announced the launch of the Gigabit Phone, a device that offers extremely fast connectivity at 1Gbps, as well as a few other nifty features.

Besides the amazing download speeds — ZTE did not share details of how the phone will achieve such fast connectivity — the Gigabit Phone will also have the ability to create panoramic, 360-degree video, and it will come with "instant cloud storage."

While it's unlikely that you'll see support for gigabit LTE on your carrier anytime soon, you have to start somewhere. Qualcomm launched a gigabit LTE-capable chip last year, and a first gigabit LTE network went live earlier this month in Australia, but we're not aware of any commercially available phone that can actually achieve gigabit speeds right now. New iPhone might have a 'function area' instead of a home button

There's no lack of rumors about the upcoming iPhone's screen, which is widely expected to be covering the phone's entire face. But the latest report from reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI securities is perhaps the most detailed yet.

The report, via MacRumors, claims the new iPhone (which will probably be called iPhone 8) will have a 5.8-inch OLED display, but only 5.15 inches of that will actually be the usable screen. The lower part of the display will be reserved for the "function area," which will presumably host virtual buttons and, possibly, an under-the-screen fingerprint reader

Live streaming is taking off in China, but foreigners won't be able to join in the fun.

Foreigners are reporting having their accounts suspended on big streaming platforms, where popular users are raking in big bucks through virtual gifts and other microdonations.

Users on both Yizhibo, which is backed by Chinese social media giant Weibo, and Blued, China's most popular gay social networking app, have received vague suspension notices, Sixth Tone reports.

Guy sacrifices Tesla to save unconscious driver, Elon Musk offers to cover repair costs

It feels good to be the hero, and for the driver that exposed his Tesla (and himself) to danger in order to save another driver, it won't even be very costly.

According to Muenchner Merkur (via Jalopnik), 41-year-old Manfred Kick was driving his Tesla Model S when he noticed a man in a Volkswagen driving erratically on the Autobahn near Munich, Germany. When Kick realized the man was unconscious, he pulled in front of the Volkswagen and slowly braked until both cars came to a stop.

He then entered the Volkswagen and gave the man first aid, while some people who stopped called emergency services. The man, who appeared to have suffered a stroke, was taken to the hospital and is stable, the German police said Tuesday.  Read more...

India will now greet tourists with a local SIM card on arrival

Foreigners visiting India will no longer have to worry about the difficulties that they were previously subjected to in getting a local SIM card in the country.

The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) said Thursday foreigners with e-visas landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi will be provided with a SIM card from state-run telecom operator, BSNL. 15 other airports in the country, who have the provisions for e-visas, will soon initiate the program as well, the association said.

Tourists will now be only required to present a copy of their e-visa and the first page of the passport for proof to get the SIM card, the association added. The SIM card will be loaded with a credit of Rs 50 (85 cents) for making calls, and 50MB data for internet usage. It will be active for a month, and tourists will be able to avail the 24-hour helpline made for them, which is available in 12 languages. Read more...

This model of Donald Trump's awful handshake is hilariously on-point

We don't know if you've noticed, but Donald Trump has a pretty odd handshake.

It's sort of difficult to describe. Whenever he shakes a person's hand, he tends to yank on their arm with a strange shoulder-jerking motion while simultaneously patting them with his free hand as if to reassure them that what they're experiencing is normal.

Here's a real-world example:

On Wednesday, someone decided to map Trump's uniquely strange handshake once and for all — by making an actual model of it.

Here's the model in action:

At the time of writing, the Imgur post has been viewed around 170,000 times. It's also gone viral on Twitter, and has been shared by the likes of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. Read more...

Drug smugglers go full 'Mad Max' with pot-slinging catapult

Drug smugglers are equipping themselves for Donald Trump's wall, it seems.

U.S. border patrol agents in Arizona have uncovered and dismantled a very rudimentary catapult used to sling marijuana into the United States from Mexico.

Yep, for real. A closer look at the device reveals a medieval-style bundle of tubing and heavy spring tied together by rope which could be straight from Mad Max: Fury Road

Agents made the discovery when they approached several people near the fence, who then scattered away, according to CNN. Two bundles of cannabis weighing a combined 47 lb (21 kg) were still attached to the catapult.  Read more...

Somali-American teen wears hijab on Kanye West's Yeezy NYFW show

Somali-American model Halima Aden might not be a household name. But, Aden was the name on everyone's lips after Kanye West's Yeezy Season 5 show at New York Fashion Week.

Adem walked the runway wearing her hijab; a sight that is — even in 2017 — still something of a rarity.

The model — who was born in a refugee camp in Kenya — made history in November 2016 when she wore a burkini and a hijab when participating in the semifinal of the Miss Minnesota USA pageant.

Despite not making it to the final of the show, Aden was recently signed by model agency IMG and made her catwalk debut on the Yeezy runway on 15 Feb. Read more...

Reddit's new 'popular' front page excludes Trump-obsessed community

Reddit's new front page is all about popular posts — but it really depends on how you define "popular."

On Wednesday, social news site Reddit introduced a new version of its front page; more precisely, the front page that shows to new visitors who aren't logged into Reddit. Instead of showing posts from a hand-picked, default set of subreddits, the page — also available at Reddit/r/popular/ — now shows posts that are popular over a wider variety of subreddits across Reddit.

However, some subreddits are filtered out. As Reddit admin simbawulf put it, "subreddits that are large and dedicated to specific games are heavily filtered, as well as specific sports, and narrowly focused politically related subreddits," will not show on /r/popular. Furthermore, the announcement post said that "a handful of subreddits that users consistently filter out of their r/all page" will also be excluded.  Read more...

LG shows what that crazy 18:9 phone screen can do

We already know LG's upcoming G6 flagship will have a huge, 18:9, 2,880x1,440 pixel screen. But what do users actually gain from that unusual aspect ratio?

The answer is quite mundane: You get more space. A short teaser, posted by LG Mobile on Wednesday, shows some of the benefits.

First, it can display two squares on top of each other (18/9 = 2, duh), which opens the door for a nice, clean UI. It's also great for multitasking, which, while far from unheard of on smartphones, could really benefit from a longer screen.

We're not really seeing a lot of multitasking in the video, but LG explained how this would work in a press release. "Inside the calendar app, turning the G6 horizontally will display the calendar in the left window while a detailed schedule will appear on the right," the company said.  Read more...

Cool dog rides a skateboard on the subway just like you've always dreamed

Spotted by Twitter user Jessica Doyle on her way to work Tuesday, this pup truly has it all, by which we mean a hat, cool shoes and a skateboard. We will admit he would look cooler with headphones, but perhaps he did not have time to put them on.

No, you shouldn't be allowed to fix your own phone, 'Right-to-Repair' is a dumb idea

My co-worker, Tracey, held her iPhone like a baby bird with a bent wing.

I stared at the dark screen. The device was still on, but stuck between the worlds of being living technology, and a busted iPhone. She explained that while making a phone call shortly after having third-party iPhone screen repair company iCracked replace her shattered iPhone 6 screen, the device made a popping sound, and got really hot in one corner. Then, her screen cracked, and burnt her ear. She wanted to know what to do. iCracked was ready to let the original technician repair her phone again. I warned her against it. The phone was obviously dangerous—and letting them touch it again probably wouldn’t help. Read more...

Apple's war against you repairing your iPhone is pure corporate greed

You don't own your iPhone.

Not really, anyway: The software updates are administered by Apple, and if you break your touchscreen, the company does everything in its power to make sure you have to visit Apple's licensed stores to fix it. Each little screw holding the device together is a special, proprietary design you won't find in any standard toolbox.

When you power on, you're doing so at Apple's mercy—no matter how many hundreds of dollars you paid for your iPhone. Your gadget's on borrowed time. It's just inevitable, at this point, that the device will be laid out by some future iOS update, or a touchscreen that short circuits after taking a spill on your bathroom tile.  Read more...

New Snapchat filter idea: Vomiting money.

Snap Inc. will be worth as much as $22 billion if all goes well with its upcoming initial public offering, in which the company will for the first time make its stock available to the public for purchase.

McDonald's re-engineered super-straw is not an early April Fools joke

Did you hear about McDonald's new Chocolate Shamrock Shake? It's a dual-layer shake — basically a chocolate shake below a regular Shamrock Shake.

But you can't drink it properly with a regular straw. No sir, a regular straw just wouldn't do here, so McDonald's hired some aerospace and robotic engineers to redesign the straw to deliver the ideal 50/50 ratio of flavors while drinking the Chocolate Shamrock Shake.

The result is called STRAW — Suction Tube for Reverse Axial Withdrawal — and it looks like a regular straw with a couple of holes at the curvy bottom, but McDonald's, who hired two companies to work on the straw, Jace and NK Labs, claims it's much more than that.  Read more...

Dude defies physics and saves toddler from falling off a counter

Some people are just born with impressive dad reflexes, or the ability to defy physics and save a falling baby in a seemingly impossible situation.

An employee was assisting a customer who plopped his toddler up on the countertop at iFly, an indoor skydiving center in Houston, when the kid suddenly lost his balance while his father was distracted taking a photo. The employee managed to catch the kid just inches before its head hit the floor.

Realizing the awesome save he just accomplished, the employee turned and stared right into the security camera to flex some of his impressive toddler-saving reflexes.  Read more...

Future iPhones could catch screen cracks before they turn into major problems

Walking around with a cracked iPhone screen isn't a good look. It's a major turn-off in the dating world, and it can be outlandishly expensive and complicated to fix without Apple's own care plan.

Since clumsy texters will always find a way to thrash their smartphones, a new patent spotted by Apple Insider Thursday could make it a little easier for future iPhone users to detect screen damage before their display takes on full spiderweb status.

The patent lays out potential methods for detecting cracks as they form on the iPhone's display cover. The tech could be used to pinpoint problem areas and hairline cracks as they form beneath the surface, warning users that they're one drop away from reaching the point of no return. What exactly they might do next to prevent critical damage isn't clear, but a safety warning is better than nothing.  Read more...

Samantha Bee on the Trump administration's 'legislative f*ckfest'

"We're only one menstrual cycle into this presidency," Samantha Bee declared on Wednesday's episode of Full Frontal. "And there is blood in the water."

Beginning with news clips comparing Trump's floundering to Richard Nixon, Bee went on to explain why his administration has been so active.

Bee switches tack then to highlight the the Congressional Review Act, a law which allows Congress to repeal legislation passed in the last six months (A.K.A. by the Obama administration) by a simple majority vote. More than 50 of the Obama administration's regulations could still be affected, including the Endangered Species Act. Read more...

Elon Musk is totally, hilariously serious about tunneling his way out of traffic jams

Elon Musk is laughing all the way to the center of the Earth.

After the idea to build tunnels hit him while stuck in traffic late last year, he went ahead and founded a business to disrupt the tunneling industry — called the Boring Company (surprisingly, the URL was available). Chatting with a Bloomberg reporter, he revealed the two other names he says he considered: Tunnels R Us and American Tubes and Tunnels, or AT&T for short.

At this point you might think Musk is just having a bit of fun with everybody over a brief fixation with tunnels, but he's — apparently — totally serious. And he's already made one really big hole in the SpaceX parking lot in Hawthorne, California, to prove it. Read more...

It just got a whole lot harder for you to contact Energy Department employees

The Department of Energy has taken down its public-facing employee directory, making it far more difficult for journalists and members of the public to locate email addresses and phone numbers for agency personnel.

The move, which was announced to agency contractors on Wednesday and implemented Thursday morning, was confirmed in an internal email shared with Mashable

Making federal scientists and policy makers harder to contact isn’t a trivial matter. These kinds of moves toward opacity wall off employees from the outside world and make it more likely that they won’t experience public pressure related to their taxpayer-funded work.  Read more...

Giphy launches library of more than 2,000 GIFs to teach you sign language

GIFs can do more than add a sassy quip to the end of your tweet. Now, they can even help you learn a new language.

Giphy released an extensive GIF library on Thursday with more than 2,000 words and phrases in American Sign Language. To create the GIFs, Giphy cut videos from the popular educational series Sign With Robert, adding text descriptions to make the GIFs look like looping flash cards.

At first glance, the GIFs might seem a bit unremarkable — they simply show Sign with Robert creator Robert DeMayo, who has been deaf since birth, signing a word over and over. Read more...

Monopoly smites the humble thimble figure from its game

It has been a cruel 2017 thus far and now the humble thimble, the universal symbol of the blessed sewers who toil and sweat over clothes, blankets, and so much more, has unceremoniously been booted from the choice of Monopoly figurines.

In January, the game's maker, Hasbro, opened up fan voting on what it was calling Monopoly Token Madness for users to select new tokens for the game. But here's the twist: rather than simply replacing a token or two, as the game has done in the past, the current vote is to select all eight tokens for future versions of the game.  Read more...

CeeLo Green seems obsessed with Beyoncé and his latest weird song proves it

Yeah, we all love Beyoncé. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't like at least one of her songs.

But there's a difference between having admiration for her cultural influence and recording a cover of an 80's hit with lyrics rewritten to be about your Beyoncé obsession—which is exactly what CeeLo Green did.

In a music video, which premiered on WorldStar Hip Hop, a mini CeeLo leaps around a bedroom adorned with Bey photos while singing "Jay-Z's Girl," an updated rendition of Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl."  Read more...

Apple TV might get 4K video streaming, but it'll still lag behind

Big things could be coming to the Apple TV.

Last revamped in late 2015 with beefier hardware, a refreshed tvOS interface and the Siri Remote, Apple's set-top box has basically languished as competing set-top boxes like the Amazon Fire TV, Roku Ultra and the new NVIDIA Shield TV run circles around it.

That could soon change. Apple is reportedly testing a new Apple TV capable of streaming 4K video with "more vivid colors (sounds like HDR), according to Bloomberg. The current Apple TV only outputs at 1080p full HD, which is fine, but it's no 4K.

The dissonance between Vogue and Teen Vogue is finally too loud to ignore

In the Trump era, Teen Vogue has become a rallying point of the resistance. But its big sister has ... not.

Vogue's history of tone deafness got worse this week when it released photos from an upcoming fashion editorial featuring supermodel Karlie Kloss dressed as a geisha complete with yellowface.

You'd think most magazines would know better by now, then again, what is 2017 but a year of regression? If any of Vogue's high-fashion competitors — Harper's Bazaar, W, or Town & Country, for example — had a similar lapse in judgment, the magazine would likely issue a statement and try to move on.  Read more...

Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell bet it all in 'The House' trailer

The things we do for love. Many parents take out loans to send their kids to college, but in the trailer for The House, starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler, the Johansens need quicker payoff — so they start an illegal gambling ring in their basement.

Scott (Ferrell) and Kate (Poehler) don't have the funds to send their daughter Alex (Ryan Simpkins) to her dream school, so they enlist their friend Frank (Jason Mantzoukas) to turn their home into a miniature Las Vegas. The trailer is predictably bursting with familiar comedy faces, including Andy Buckley, Lennon Parham, Nick Kroll, Rob Huebel and Allison Tolman. Read more...

Heroic pet squirrel attacks burglar who breaks into owner's home

It turns out dogs aren't the only animal that's fiercely loyal to their humans. This past Monday, the local Idaho ABC news station reported on the town's new hero: Joey the pet squirrel.

When a burglar broke into owner Adam Pearl's home, Joey apparently sprang into action, scratching and attacking the intruder. The culprit later told police that Joey bothered him the entire time he was in the house.

Though usually only dogs get the honor of being good boys, we can confidently say that Joey is also a very good boy.

PewDiePie apologizes for anti-Semitic jokes, blames the media for everything

PewDiePie is the very definition of sorry/not sorry.

The world's top YouTuber (real name Felix Kjellberg) posted a response video Thursday, days after Maker Studios dropped him over The Wall Street Journal's extensive review of the YouTubers recent videos that found a handful containing anti-Semitic "jokes" and Nazi imagery.

Though PewDiePie does indeed apologize and says his joking went "too far," the video quickly veers into harsh critique of the media, pointing a finger (and crassly giving the finger) at the Journal and several other outlets for what he feels is a sustained campaign of twisting his words and taking his jokes out of context. Look out, Alexa — you can now buy stuff using your Google Home

It's hard to talk about the Google Home without comparing it to the Amazon Echo and Alexa — the two speaker systems are tied together as they compete to take the top spot as the dominant smart home hub. But Amazon has held one big advantage over Google from the start: You can order just about anything online just by asking Alexa.

Starting today, Google is taking steps to close the gap. The search giant is rolling out a new shopping feature on the Home using Google Assistant so you can make quick purchases via voice command.

Google Home owners just need to prompt their device by saying “Ok Google, how do I shop?” or even more specifically something like “Ok Google, order paper towels." Assistant will take over from there, placing an order for same-day or two-day shipping.   Read more...

A new 'continent's' been found under the magical land of New Zealand

New Zealand, the land of Hobbits, ridiculously beautiful landscapes and, uh, The Feebles, has just become a little bit more magical.

An entire flipping continent might be hiding beneath New Zealand, geologists say. The area, named Zealandia, is massive.

At 4.9-million square kilometers, or nearly 1.9-million square miles, it's bigger than all of India. Yet most of it — about 94 percent — is submerged in the ocean, according to a new study in the Geological Society of America's journal, GSA Today.
