Game of Thrones has done some pretty unforgivable things, like using women as props and killing our faves — but the latest for loyal fans of the HBO show was being forced to watch a block of ice melt live on the internet in order to uncover the Season 7 release date. The live Facebook video (which stalled more than once) required fans type "FIRE" in the comments (or "DRACARYS" if you want to be extra efficient) to shoot fire at an actual physical block of ice in which the release date was hidden. Harriet Tubman, renowned abolitionist and creator of the Underground Railroad, is the subject of very few photos. There was a bounty on her head for many years, so keeping her appearance a mystery was a matter of life and death. You often hear the old canard "all publicity is good publicity," and that's true — if you don't care about potential customers reinforcing negative stereotypes around your product. What is the most damaging negative perception around HBO's hit Game of Thrones (which, to be clear, I love) if you want people to keep watching it? The perception that it drags on and on without much of importance changing; that many characters are traveling in circles; that it is "narratively bankrupt." That the author of the book series on which it is based, George RR Martin, is taking an Ice Age to finish his next tome; that neither he nor the showrunners have any clue how to wrap up this sprawling story in a satisfactory manner. Say it together now: Women know their bodies. Women can be trusted with their bodies. It's not every day that a reputable study comes along to support these obvious truths, given that women, of course, still routinely hear patronizing messages — including from the medical community — about things like menstruation, birth control, abortion and childbirth. Now a new study provides strong evidence that medical guidelines issued last year about pregnancy and alcohol use underestimated women. The research, published Thursday in Obstetric and Gynecology, essentially finds that women actually know how to make decisions about their bodies. The study was spurred by controversial recommendations issued last year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which advised women planning to get pregnant and sexually active women who don't use effective contraception not to drink alcohol because of the chance of a fetus developing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Congress doesn't like Trump's deleted tweets (and it's not because of the typos)
If there's one thing that's predictable about President Donald Trump's tweets, it's that he'll eventually commit a few typos. But it's what happens after these typos that has one Congressional committee a bit twisted. On Wednesday, the Committee on Government Oversight and Reform sent a letter to the White House expressing concern about the way Trump deletes those typo-filled tweets, preventing them from being cataloged properly by the Presidential Records Act. That act was implemented in 1978, after the Watergate scandal, make those archives public and putting them under the care of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). And with the expansion of social media — and the president's use of it — so, too, must specialists file away all those tweets. Read more... Movie theaters are desperate to get would-be customers off their couches, away from their unending supply of streaming movies, TV shows and cat videos. In what is being touted as a "historic" move, India has more than doubled its paid maternity leave to 26 weeks from 12 weeks for working moms-to-be. The global average is 20 weeks, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). India is now ahead of several European and Asian nations when it comes to fully paid maternity leaves but trails behind the likes of Estonia, Bulgaria, Hungary and Japan. The 26 weeks of paid leave, however, will be available to women for the first two children only, after which they will be entitled to just 12 weeks of paid leave. Read more... NASA just found a long-lost spacecraft orbiting the moon. The spacecraft — India's first moon probe — was found along with NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) circling the moon. "Finding LRO was relatively easy, as we were working with the mission's navigators and had precise orbit data where it was located. Finding India's Chandrayaan-1 required a bit more detective work because the last contact with the spacecraft was in August of 2009," Marina Brozovic, a radar scientist working on the project, said in a statement. If you've ever been to a Purim party (this year, the holiday falls on Mar. 11 and 12), you've likely eaten hamantaschen, a triangular cookie filled with prunes or other fruit jam. Sorry if you fell asleep, they just aren't that exciting. Until this year, that is, when Rebecca Firkser, of My Jewish Learning, created hamantaschen jello shots. The idea came because the Talmud (important Jewish text regarding many different subjects including law, tradition and history) specifically says Purim is a time for wine and revelry. Firkser says, "Indeed, we could be delicate and pour a proper glass of wine while munching on a cookie. It's been nearly six years to the day since a tsunami smashed into Fukushima, Japan, ruining the power and cooling systems of three nuclear reactors. The result was a "nuclear accident." Residents could no longer live there without great risk of radiation poisoning. Officials set up a perimeter for miles around the reactors, known as an exclusion zone. Now, former residents of four towns inside that zone are being invited back, but officials have found these towns have new inhabitants. Packs of wild boar have taken up residence where people no longer live. They inhabit abandoned homes and cross vacant streets. They plunder nearby crops, and have caused around $854,000 in damage to agriculture in Fukushima. Officials have tried to get rid of the newcomers as they ready the towns for re-population, and at first there seemed to be a ready-made way to make that happen. Boar meat is a sought-after meal in northern Japan, and here is a huge supply.
