Two of your favorite SXSW attendees, Senator Cory Booker and Sesame Street's Bert, just shared a touching moment live on Twitter. After his eventful panel, Booker stopped by Day Two of "The Mashable Show" – an exclusive 90-minute Twitter live stream of all things SXSW – to chat with Co-host Bert about the Word of the Day: freedom. To honor Sesame Street's 'Word of the Day' segment, Mashable's Jessica Cohen asked Booker to explain what the word "freedom" means to him. After fulfilling one of Booker's life-long dreams, taking a selfie with a Sesame Street character, the senator dropped some serious knowledge at The Mash House. Read more... Cory Booker and Bert became BFFs on The Mashable Show at SXSW — and made it official with a glorious selfie. The Sesame Street muppet and the uber popular U.S. senator hung out in Austin, Texas on Saturday and captured the blooming relationship in the only worthy way. It followed a deep discussion about sidekicks, head shaving and the meaning of freedom. Booker didn't shy away from expressing his love for Bert, his idol since he was three years old. "Bert, what an honor, you have been in my life for a long time and I am grateful," he said, causing our old favorite muppet to blush. Read more... All across the country, schools and states want to dictate where people can go to the bathroom. That doesn't mean folks have to listen. For the trans and gender non-conforming community, the right to use the bathroom of their choice is increasingly under attack. North Carolina requires people use the bathroom assigned on their birth certificates, and Texas is preparing a bill just like it. And while we can't change those laws overnight, we can print out non-cheesy gender-inclusive bathroom signs and tape them to bathroom doors in our businesses and schools. A little-noticed bill moving through Congress would allow companies to require employees to undergo genetic testing or risk paying a penalty of thousands of dollars, and would let employers see that genetic and other health information. Giving employers such power is now prohibited by legislation including the 2008 genetic privacy and nondiscrimination law known as GINA. The new bill gets around that landmark law by stating explicitly that GINA and other protections do not apply when genetic tests are part of a “workplace wellness” program. The bill, HR 1313, was approved by a House committee on Wednesday, with all 22 Republicans supporting it and all 17 Democrats opposed. It has been overshadowed by the debate over the House GOP proposal to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, but the genetic testing bill is expected to be folded into a second ACA-related measure containing a grab-bag of provisions that do not affect federal spending, as the main bill does. The Winklevoss twins lost out on Facebook, and now they've lost out on bitcoin. The Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday denied an application from brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss — depicted by Armie Hammer in The Social Network — to create an exchange-traded fund for bitcoin. An ETF would track the price of bitcoin and make investing in the cryptocurrency more attractive to Wall Street. For weeks ahead of the SEC decision, the price of bitcoin soared on the expectation that major Wall Street interest could be ahead. At one point, one bitcoin was worth more than an ounce of gold. "We exist. We resist. We rise." This powerful statement was boldly brought to the White House, through protest signs and spirit, on March 10 as part of the Native Nations Rise protests. Thousands of Native Americans from tribes across North America marched to the White House to rally for Indigenous rights and environmental protection. The protest was in response to President Donald Trump's recent actions targeting Indigenous populations.
This is probably the only way you'll ever get to visit the Space Station, but it's pretty damn good
We never tire of seeing amazing new footage from the International Space Station (ISS), but it would be even better if most of us could get a VIP ticket to visit. Well, now we can, thanks to virtual reality on the Oculus Rift. Mission: ISS is a completely immersive VR experience that puts you on board the ISS as it orbits the Earth, with all the realistic effects you'd actually experience in space, including weightlessness. Produced by Los Angeles-based studio Magnopus, the experience was developed in collaboration with NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency. Read more... After basking in 70-degree temperatures in February, residents of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast are in for one heck of a rude awakening early this coming week, as a powerful storm takes shape off the East Coast. While there is still considerable uncertainty in the details a little over two days in advance, it's clear that areas from Philadelphia to Boston stand a decent chance of getting walloped with heavy snow, strong winds, coastal flooding and possibly, for a time anyway, heavy rain. Whether or not the nation's capital, which has had a measly couple of inches of snow so far this season, sees much from this event is unclear, as is exactly how long the storm lasts. Read more... Floating just inches from my face was a semi-translucent brain. It was, this being Austin, missing a few pieces. To my left floated the frontal lobe. I reached out with my virtual left hand, tapped it and the lobe floated into place. The brain and my first taste of Meta 2 augmented reality were complete. The experience was not wholly unfamiliar. I've tried out Microsoft's HoloLens — the best-known augmented reality headset — fending off invaders crawling through hotel walls and walking around a virtual solar system. It's impressive. Meta 2, which Meta is showing off here at SXSW in Austin, Texas, where there are dozens of panels and sessions devoted to AR and virtual reality (VR), is impressive on its own. Read more... Another week in Trumpmerica, another bout of nervously chuckling through Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update. This week, hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost take on Trumpcare (but don't call it that), Trump's "Muslim ban 2.0," and the leaked CIA documents. The funniest moment, however, is footage of Trump himself. Last Tuesday, the president literally jumped out from behind a wall to the astonishment/seeming abject terror of a White House tour group. Saturday Night Live cast members Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney are good eggs. The corporation then leased plots of the island for wealthy New Yorkers to build bungalows and stilt-legged summer homes along the island’s shallow canals. I've said this many times: Huawei makes great phones. They're built to last and their software won't cause you many headaches after you get used to it. All the Huawei phones I've tested in the last couple of years worked very well, even after I've been using them a while (which can't be said for many Android phones). But while the company's latest flagship, the Huawei P10, follows in that path, it has one pretty big flaw: it's boring. It doesn't bring any truly exciting features, and it's not even keeping pace with competitors. There's no huge screen. No waterproof design.
