The atmosphere has forgotten what season it is in the U.S.

There was something not quite right about the severe weather outbreak that tore across the Midwest late Tuesday and into Wednesday.

At least 24 tornado reports were recorded with more than 162 high wind reports and more than 200 hail reports, and while this wouldn't be a strange occurrence for a weather pattern in March or April, it happened at the end of February.

This is not normal.

On a typical last night of February in Chicago, snow would be in the air, or at least on the ground. But not this year. In a city where for the first time in 146 years of record-keeping there was no snow on the ground at all in January or February, the skies lit up with streaks of lightning on Tuesday night.  Read more...

Spotify takes a cue from Tidal with hi-fi streaming option

Facebook copies Snapchat, and Spotify copies Tidal.

The top music streaming service is planning to introduce lossless audio — or CD-quality music — to subscribers for a higher monthly price, according to a report in The Verge

That report was based on a Spotify user source who got the option to sign up in what looked like a test of potential pricing, and some Reddit users who did, too. A Spotify spokesperson told the publication that “We are always testing new products and offers but have no news to share at this time." Spotify gave the same statement to Mashable

The pricing test offered users an upgrade to high-quality audio for between $5 and $10 more per month than the usual $10-a-month Spotify Premium. That would be $15 to $20 a month total for lossless audio Spotify subscribers.  Read more...

Talented rapper drops a 6-minute nonstop freestyle that's absolutely fire

Freestylin' ain't easy. Even professional rappers struggle to think as fast as you need to pull off smooth rhyming lines that actually make sense.

This doesn't seem to be an issue for Harry Mack, who freestyles everywhere he goes. He is so quick on his feet that he also quickly draws crowds anywhere he decides to stop and drop a beat.

His latest video shows him rapping up a storm in Venice Beach, California. He pulls in everything from what people are wearing to how great at rapping he is. But when he says that "he flows so dope, bro" he's actually telling the complete truth. There's six minutes of proof right here. Read more...

This is what you need to do at the gym to keep up with Ruth Bader Ginsburg

When you're the oldest justice on the Supreme Court, it's understandable that you are willing to do anything to stay as mentally and physically fit as possible. The country sorta depends on it.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg does just that with a rigorous workout that Ben Schreckinger from Politico lived through long enough to share the sweaty journey with us all.

If you wanna get swole like Notorious RGB does at the hands of her trainer Bryant Johnson, you first must warm up. The 83-year-old justice kicks things off with five minutes on the elliptical before a series of light stretches.  Read more...

Facebook enlists AI tech to help prevent suicide

Can Facebook use all that it knows about us to help stop someone from committing suicide?

It's been more than a rhetorical question since January, after a video, pulled from the social media platform Live.Me and shared on Facebook, showed a 12-year-old Katelyn Nicole Davis taking her own lifeFacebook couldn't control the spread of the video and appeared unsure if it even violated its own terms of service.

A month later, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's 6,000 word global community manifesto made it  clear that Facebook is ready to take on a more parental role, one that acknowledges its incredible influence and impact over nearly 2 billion people around the worldZuckerberg wrote: Read more...

One of the world's best soccer teams is taking the names off their jerseys to make a point

The Swedish women's national soccer team may have won a silver medal in the 2016 summer Olympics, pulling off a huge upset by ousting the Americans from the competition, but that apparently hasn't translated into widespread respect for their skills back home.

In the wake of their historic win, the less successful men's team still managed to get a significant share of accolades and media attention. So the players decided to launch an unconventional campaign.

In partnership with Adidas, the team created limited edition jerseys that swap the players' names for tweets meant to inspire and empower.  Read more...

Now is the absolute worst time to buy an iPhone

Apple is about to commit infanticide on the iPhone 7.

The device—which is great, and just a few months old—will likely be blown to unrecyclable smithereens by the upcoming iPhone 8, if rumors are any indication. Sure, it's always true that a shiny new iPhone's just around the corner, but there's reason to believe the next iteration of Apple's iconic gadget will be such a substantial leap forward that you'd be foolish to invest in a device now.

Here's the big thing: A report in the Wall Street Journal Tuesday indicated that Apple will dump the Lightning port on the iPhone 8, replacing it with USB-C. In layman's terms, the cords you currently use to power your phone or listen to music will be rendered useless, doomed to haunt your junk drawer or some far-off landfill forevermore. Read more...

Netflix now lets you trick out your subtitles

Unless you're a member of the deaf community or a big fan of foreign films, you probably never think about how drab your default subtitles are. You just queue up your device, press play on your favorite show and relax for the next eight straight hours of binge watching without reading a word.

New settings from Netflix might just make you opt for closed captions more often. You can match your subtitles to the content on your screen with new fonts, colors and text effects — or just make everything really weird by watching a period piece matched with a font that looks just like Comic Sans.

Inside the shadowy Skype seat selection process

While the early weeks of the Trump administration have been marked by a stormy relationship with the media, the White House press office has managed to institute at least one promising initiative.

The office has started using "Skype seats" during press briefings, allowing reporters from outlets that are at least 50 miles away from Washington D.C., to sit in on the briefings and ask questions of Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

On the surface, there's lots to like about offering reporters from outside the Washington circle a chance to throw their voices into the mix, asking questions that may get overlooked by the scandal du jour and are of importance to their audiences.  Read more...

People are trolling the giraffe birth livestream by saying giraffes lay eggs

There's nothing like a good conspiracy theory to really set off an extremely odd and unexpected internet trend. A group of people are trolling a popular YouTube livestream by saying that giraffes lay eggs.

It all started last week when the Animal Adventure Park in New York started a livestream of its pregnant giraffe, April. Intended for educational and promotional purposes, the stream got off to a rocky start when alleged animal rights activists flagged the YouTube stream for removal, citing nudity and sexually explicit content. The stream was briefly taken down by YouTube, then reinstated, but the damage was done.  Read more...

The Oculus Rift and controllers dropped from $800 to $600

Oculus is drastically reducing the price of its Rift virtual reality headset and Touch controllers to a combined cost of $600 — $500 for the headset and $100 for the controllers — the company announced today.

The Rift was first released a year ago this month, and the Touch controllers came out in December, for a combined cost of $800. It's a pretty steep price to pay to experience VR considering it requires a high-end (read: expensive) PC to run games and programs effectively. The 25 percent cut in costs makes the system a bit more appealing to people interested in VR but deterred by the high price of entry. Read more...

Giant spider crabs ripping apart a squid has all the makings of a horror movie

If you needed any more proof that nature is ruthless, scary and unforgiving, take a peek at this video of giant spider crabs ripping a poor squid to shreds.

Spider crabs usually migrate to Port Phillip Bay, Australia from May to July as waters cool down, so seeing this kind of migration in February is surprising. Chiharu Shimowada, the diver who provided this video to Storyful, said in his 10 years of scuba he has never seen anything like this.

Clippy is back, and this time it's coming for your browser

Clippy is backAgain.

The world's most infamous paper clip is back in the form of a Chrome extension called Clippy Everywhere! Once installed and activated, the extension creates (or, more accurately, recreates) Clippy's creepy/cute animate antics every time you visit a web page. It asks you with those weird eyes, "Hi I'm Clippy! I'm the browser assistant and my job is to help you navigate this page. Do you need assistance?"

Image: Screenshot

Its usefulness, or rather its lack thereof, ends there. Unlike the Microsoft version, which actually did provide assistance when asked (not that we ever did), the only other thing this Clippy can do is stare at you with those creepy eyes. Occasionally I saw it dart its eyes over the yellow paper, and just about five seconds ago it appeared to have turned itself into a... hole-puncher? a stapler? a frog? You be the judge: Read more...

Snapchat shares will likely cost $17 each on their debut

Snapchat officially announced on Wednesday that its shares will begin trading at $17, according to numerous media reports.

The news marks the last major piece of the puzzle before Snapchat officially becomes a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange.

The $17 price tag is above the initial expected range of $14-$16, meaning Snapchat saw considerable interest in its offering.

The pricing puts Snapchat's valuation at $24 billion.

The pricing also means that Snapchat will officially be the biggest U.S. tech company to go public since Facebook in 2012.

Snapchat, of course, remains well within Facebook's sizable shadow, but is also seen as the company that Facebook has been most desperate to vanquish. Facebook has repeatedly copied Snapchat features, and is also starting to invest more in high-quality content in order to attract the big brand-based ad budgets.  Read more...

He tweeted (and later deleted) a photo of Emma Stone in the wings with her new Oscar minutes before giving presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway the wrong envelope for best picture.

This Messenger app will keep your friends anxiously waiting for your reply

There's about to be some drama in the group chat.

Then, whenever a friend messages you on Facebook Messenger, the app will make it look as though you're typing indefinitely. It also tracks how long your friends have been waiting. Devious!

We tried the app, and it works perfectly. Just download the app, send your friend a serious-sounding message like "hey, we need to talk," and sit back and let it work its magic.

The cleverly-named app is a reference to the Samuel Beckett play, Waiting for Godot, in which two characters wait for someone named Godot who never arrives.   Read more...

Ancient fossils may hold the oldest known signs of life on Earth

Ancient rocks in northwestern Canada may contain the oldest evidence of life on Earth.

Scientists have discovered remains of microorganisms that likely thrived around 3.8 billion years ago near volcanic vents on the seafloor, according to a study published Wednesday in Nature.

Iron-dwelling bacteria left behind tiny, rusty filaments and tubes, which were found encased in layers of quartz in the Nuvvuagittuq supracrustal belt near Quebec.

"The fact we unearthed them from one of the oldest-known rock formations suggests we've found direct evidence of one of Earth's oldest life forms," Dominic Papineau, the study lead and a lecturer at University College London (UCL)'s Earth Sciences department, said in a press release. Read more...

Beer bottle sand could save New Zealand's beaches

Each machine lets drinkers instantly turn their empty beer bottles into sand. Publishing platform Medium released a new feature on Wednesday that might look awfully familiar to any Snapchat user.

That or any of the services including Instagram, Facebook and Tinder that have have ripped off Snapchat's popular "Stories" feature.

Medium's new "Series" tool — the company at least had the decency to switch up a couple letters — isn't an exact clone of Snapchat's trademark feature, which strings together video clips and photos, but there is certainly a strong resemblance. Read more...

George Michael is gone, but his impact on the LGBTQ community won't be easily forgotten.

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is on Saturday, and the final touches are being applied to the 180 or so floats set to travel down Oxford Street, in one of the world's biggest pride parades.

Among them is DIY Rainbow, the group known for chalking city streets with rainbows in support of marriage equality. In tribute to the late pop star, they've created "Freedom! The Float." And we are here for it.

Global warming made Australia's record-breaking, sizzling summer 50 times more likely

Millions of Australians just endured a sizzlingly hot summer, with three blistering heat waves enveloping much of southeastern Australia during January and February sending temperatures soaring as high as 48.2 degrees Celsius, or 118.7 degrees Fahrenheit.

New South Wales, located in southeastern Australia, had its warmest summer on record, with numerous temperature milestones shattered in Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra, among other locations.

Now a new quick-turnaround analysis from an international group of climate researchers found direct ties between global warming and this summer's heat. In completing the study, the researchers utilized the computing power of hundreds of volunteers' laptops and desktops worldwide, through a project known as weather@home. Read more...

Nintendo Switch cartridges taste disgusting but that's not stopping anybody

There's plenty of intrigue and excitement when it comes to the imminent launch of the Nintendo Switch. But please, don't put the cartridges in your mouth.

According to reports, the game cartridges themselves taste goddamn awful. While the question of why people started putting them in their mouths to begin with remains, it turns out Nintendo's made them taste bad intentionally.

It's to dissuade children from trying to eat them. Makes sense considering the cartridges are pretty small, and well, children eat everything in their sight. Read more...

Social media influencers, it's time to be truthful about your #ads

If you've been turning a profit on Instagram, it's time to get your #ad house in order.

A new provision in the code of ethics, issued by the Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA), seems aimed at brands and influencers who hawk their wares on social media. Coming into effect Wednesday, the code states that sponsored content "must be clearly distinguishable as such to the relevant audience."

Some bloggers are using hashtags like #sp or #sponsored on Twitter and other platforms.

The world of influencer marketing, where celebrities, public personalities and bloggers get paid to promote brands across their social media accounts, is a nebulous one and notoriously difficult to regulate.  Read more...

Drones and UAVs are going to help inspect our subway tunnels

Singapore is keen to start using drones and unmanned aerial vehicles to inspect its extensive underground subway tunnel network.

The transport regulator put out a request for companies on Wednesday to design and develop suitable trial technologies, including 360-degree video mapping of the tunnels, as well as software that would automatically detect defects and provide their location.

Gmail finally doubles email attachment limit, but it means nothing

It’s 2017, and we're still stuck with email clients that refuse to accept attachments going north of 25MB. Gmail is changing that. Well, sort of.

Google has announced that it is doubling the attachment size for all Gmail users — going up from 25MB to 50MB. It’s a welcome move and should worry rivals Outlook and Yahoo (a lot of people use it!).

Except, they don’t really need to worry ... yet.

You see, Gmail users can receive emails with attachments that are as big as 50MB in size. But they still can't send an email that big. The attachment size is still capped at 25MB, Google said in a blog post.  Read more...

Here's a device that make dads feel pregnant. Hey, why are you running away? Come baaaack!

Every pregnant woman has wished she could transfer the bizarre and often painful experience of carrying a watermelon-sized creature in her abdomen to her partner. But has an ambitious startup finally figured out a way?

Ehhh, sadly, that's a big fat nope. The Fibo, which was created by Danish company First Bond Wearables, is essentially a bracelet that's meant to give a sense of how a baby is moving inside its mom. This snazzy wearable was initially created by three jewelry students at Copenhagen School of Design and Technology.

Image: Fibo

It's meant for fathers (and other non-carrying partners) who obviously can’t experience the magic of hosting life first-hand. The company told the Huffington Post that the intention was to get them more involved in pregnancy since “they sometimes tend to get a little left out when the mother is going through all the changes with her body.”  Read more...

Why this Indian state banned Pepsi and Coke and then revoked it

Yes, the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu cannot make up its mind on how to deal with international beverage-makers Pepsi and Coca-Cola that were accused of exploiting ground water resources.

The ban, which was effective on March 1, has been revoked by the Madras High Court which found that there was sufficient water in the river and only the surplus was being channeled for commercial purposes, the Times of India reports.

In January, the Tamil Nadu traders’ association announced that it would stop selling soft drinks manufactured by MNCs including Pepsi and Coke from March 1 and promote local beverages instead. Six thousand affiliated member associations agreed to the decision. Read more...

The mesmerising northern lights made an appearance Wednesday evening in the northern parts of Scotland and England.

"If so, the northern lights phenomenon would become a natural show exclusive to the polar regions, due to a lack of solar wind forces that often make it visible at lower latitudes," said Owens. Read more...

Subway swears its chicken is chicken and releases its own study

The subway chicken war isn't over.

A poultry analysis of various fast food restaurants from CBC Marketplace last week found that Subway's chicken may actually contain less chicken DNA than one would hope. Obviously, Subway wasn't too pleased with this study, and after releasing multiple statements disputing the report and demanding the piece be retracted, it released its own study.

The original CBC report conducted by Matt Harnden, a researcher at Trent University's Wildlife Forensic DNA Laboratory, found that the chicken used in some of Subway's wraps and sandwiches contains less than 50 percent chicken DNA, with the remaining majority being soy. Of the six sandwiches tested from various restaurants, Subway's oven roasted chicken and chicken strips were the worst offenders.  Read more...

Future iPhones may have something in common with Fruit Roll-Ups

Apple's far-flung concepts for a future iPhone seem to be inspired by a famous snack food.

The company's latest patent filing, brought to light by AppleInsider, describes a bold new build with a super-flexible OLED screen that retracts into a compact package like a scroll—or better yet, a Fruit Roll-Up.

It would allow future iPhone owners to hide their screens anytime they like. A quick deploy command would control the device, unfurling the display, while a retract command would bring it back into its casing.

The phone's internal components would be stuffed into the two rounded housings at either end. That's not a ton of space for the speakers, camera, battery, processors and the rest, but this is the future we're talking about—we'll figure it out later.  Read more...

On Wednesday night, Bria, a fifth grade "green fan" of Musk's company, Tesla, blew the billionaire's mind by writing him a letter suggesting an innovative advertising idea.

After Bria's father, "an auto writer for InsideEVs.com and U.S. News & World Report," shared a photograph of the letter to Twitter, explaining it was written for a school project, Musk gave it a read. And let's just say, he was seriously impressed. Read more...

French far-right leader at risk of jail time after tweet of violent images

The leader of the French far right may yet have her career derailed by a few tweets.

Marine Le Pen, who regularly denounces Islam and leads the far-right National Front party, has a legitimate shot at the presidency. But she's been under investigation for tweeting graphic photos related to the Islamic State in December, including an image of the beheading of James Foley, a journalist from the United States who was held hostage by ISIS militants.

French law punishes the publication of certain violent images by up to three years in prison, but Le Pen had been under immunity because she's a member of the European Union Parliament. The French judiciary had asked for her immunity to be revoked, and on Thursday they got their wish.  Read more...

Nintendo Switch brings back the widely reviled Friend Codes

No one rains on Nintendo's parade quite like Nintendo itself.

While the gaming internet raves about how sensational the new Zelda game is, Nintendo's just-deployed day one update for the Switch — out March 3 — exposes a darker truth about the new console. Friend codes are back.

Here to ask the most pressing question of all, Mr. John Stewart....

Nintendo's 12-digit codes — which are 14 characters on the Switch, with an "SW" at the front — are used to sync up with friends online. So where services like PlayStation Network, Steam and Xbox Live employ user-selected nicknames, Nintendo uses a jumble of numbers. Read more...

Restaurant owner won't let scathing Yelp review get away with 'alternative facts'

Not everyone knows how to act when in restaurants. Sorry, folks, but the customer isn't always right.

While business review services like Yelp and Trip Advisor can offer valuable insight and influence your night out on the town, anyone with a computer can write a negative review. There's bound to be some inaccurate accounts from both patrons and restaurant owners defending their establishment. Regardless, there's no greater internet drama than when an owner goes shows up on Yelp to duke it out with a reviewer.

Wearable for your dick wants to measure thrusts, girth and warn you about STIs

These days you can track just about anything with the aid of a wearable device — your steps, your calories burned, and even how soundly you sleep at night. So, it makes sense that you should also be able to measure what your penis gets up to during sex.

That's precisely what the i.Con aims to achieve.

The i.Con (manufactured by British Condoms) is a wearable condom ring which uses a nano-chip and sensors to measure and remember a number of different variables during sex.

Bluntly put, those variables include penis girth and the "average velocity" and total number of thrusts, as well as other useful info, such as calories burned, average skin temperature and the frequency of sex sessions. Read more...

Snap had a very special, very Snapchat lens for its IPO day that you can't get

On the outside of the New York Stock Exchange Thursday, Snap Inc.'s IPO looked rather boring.

A yellow background. A black font. Simply the name: Snap Inc.

TBH this could use the ghost logo $SNAP pic.twitter.com/DPTw37KjAi

— Kerry Flynn 🐶 (@kerrymflynn) March 2, 2017

It seemed so stale for a company beloved by millennials (including me) for its puppy filters and rainbow-vomiting lenses.

But, turns out there was a surprise hidden inside. It was a discovery, only made, with the help of Twitter: Elite Daily political reporter (and friend) Alexandra Svokos had mentioned me on Twitter in response to Shane Ferro's question on the matter: Read more...

Meet the 35-year-old guy who is running the NYSE’s Snapchat account

When I arrived at the New York Stock Exchange check-in Thursday at the crack of dawn (a.k.a. 8 a.m.), I told the security guard, Juan, I was there to be a guest on live-streaming media outlet Cheddar and to interview a so-called “Matthew Kobach.”

He grinned and said, “Oh, you mean Snappy?”

I laughed at the nickname, though it didn't at all surprise me. We had scheduled this whole interview on Snapchat. Kobach casually slid into my DMs on Twitter when he noticed me screenshotting and tweeting out his snaps.

Kobach is the guy, among the sea of almost entirely white men on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, who can't stop taking selfies. That's partially because it's his job — he runs the NYSE Snapchat. Read more...

Kristen Stewart says text messages are kinda ghosts and who are we to argue?

In a way, Kristen Stewart texts you every single day just to see how you're doing. And in another, actually real way, your relationship with Kristen Stewart is completely in your head but still yours to keep.

The actress, who is promoting her new film about a girl haunted by her brother's ghost, Personal Shopper, thinks text messages and social media are pretty much just that — your projections. And that's fine.

"When you speak to someone on the phone, that is a decipherable, understandable exchange," she explains to V Magazine. "But with text and social media, it’s essentially a dialogue with yourself and your interpretation of a shadow. It’s not invalid; it’s a new language.” Read more...

Apple's USB-C plans might not kill the Lightning connector

Calm down, Apple fans. We're probably not going to lose the Lightning connector — not with the iPhone 8, at least.

The Wall Street Journal dropped a bombshell on the tech world earlier this week with a report claiming Apple's upcoming iPhone 8 will ditch the company's standard Lightning connector in favor of a USB-C port. This would be a huge move for Apple – on par with the iPhone 7 killing the headphone jack – as a shift in charging ports would leave loyal iPhone adherents with piles of Lightning-dependent accessories in the lurch

However, new information claims all three of this year's iPhone models will keep the the Lightning connector, but they'll adopt USB-C Power Delivery technology for super-fast charging speeds. Reliable Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities shared the news in his latest research note, which first surfaced on MacRumors.     Read more...

Somebody made a spot-on Facebook Friendversary video for Trump and Putin

If anything can help us through the terrifying political warzone that is 2017, it is poignant Facebook satire.

The Nix Bros., who are known for their short and often political comedy videos, put together one of those Facebook Friendversary videos (that we all love and always view and publish whenever the option is available) of the two most notorious friends in the world right now.

And though the very real thought of Trump and Putin being friends is absolutely horrifying, we have to admit this video is incredibly, however sadly, spot on. Read more...

How Derek Jeter's once-mocked startup became a sports media powerhouse

CHRISTOPHER MINESES/ MASHABLE

For the better part of 20 years, Derek Jeter ruled New York like few celebrities before or since.

He wore the Yankees’ pinstripes from 1995 to 2014, racking up more hits than anyone who wore them before. Was called “Mr. November” for his habit of coming up huge en route to five World Series titles, and “The Captain” because that’s what he was.

Deep in the belly of the American media machine, he became renowned -- and resented -- for exercising meticulous control over his public image: Late-inning heroics in the Bronx, exiting the clubhouse looking fitted for a GQ shoot, whisked through the side-door of a Manhattan hotspot as a pack of reporters shouts futile questions. Google really, really wants you to try messaging with Allo, please

While it's not clear if anyone still uses it—a poll from Droid Life suggests maybe not—Google announced three new features for its messaging app Allo on Thursday. The app now includes GIF search, animated emoji and one-tap help from Google Assistant.

Google Assistant isn't exactly a new feature. Previously, users could access it by typing "@google" into the chat window. Now, there's a dedicated button for it.

Image: google

While this may seem like a small change, it makes using Google Assistant frictionless and easier to discover.

Next, there's GIF search. This is practically required in messaging apps today, so it's about time Allo offered it. The feature also comes with a feature reminiscent of "I'm feeling lucky"—users can tap on a smart reply with the "lucky" icon or type "@lucky" followed by a phrase to share a randomly selected GIF with friends.
