Elon Musk's SpaceX is betting big on its rocket launch this week

Elon Musk's SpaceX is about to face one of its biggest tests yet.

On Thursday, for the first time, the private spaceflight company will attempt to reuse a previously flown rocket booster to deliver a satellite to orbit.

This attempt at reusability will mark a key moment for SpaceX in that basically all of its plans for the future — including human trips to Mars and maybe beyond — rely on fast, efficient and affordable launch capabilities.

SpaceX, along with other private spaceflight companies, is trying to drastically lower the cost of access to space in order to open up a new range of possible missions. The launch on Thursday will be the biggest test of this business plan to date. Read more...

These terrible photos might explain why Donald Trump rejected an offer to throw a first pitch

Womp womp.

Hours after a report Tuesday morning that President Donald Trump was "in talks" to throw out the first pitch at a Washington Nationals game on Major League Baseball's Opening Day, that dream was dashed.

Now we're left with so many questions.

Politico reported Tuesday morning that Trump was "in talks" to throw out the first pitch at Nationals Park on April 3. What exactly "in talks" meant was not clear (more on that in a minute). But by midday Tuesday, the White House cited a "scheduling conflict" to say it would not happen.  Read more...

Sorry, Lyft, but being less awful than Uber doesn't make you 'woke'

If Silicon Valley is the land of self-congratulatory BS, then Lyft President John Zimmer just made a play for the crown.

As his ride-hail company continues to benefit from the ongoing struggles of its top rival Uber, the extremely rich executive took a moment out of his busy schedule rescuing kittens or whatever to chat it up with Time

The topic du jour? How his San Francisco-based company is less a Peter Thiel-backed behemoth working with General Motors to automate its drivers out of jobs than a thoughtful and do-gooding corporate citizen.

"We’re woke," the questionably woke exec told Time. "Our community is woke, and the U.S. population is woke." Read more...

Dating app figures out what we all hate about sex

When it comes to what we love and what we hate about sex, the dating app Hater has got our number.

The app, which launched in February and matches people based on what they both hate, isn't just for helping people find love. Their users can swipe through more than 3,000 topics to indicate if they love them or hate them, and thus it's become a great source of data on how people feel about all kinds of things — including sex.

Hater analyzed responses to sex-related topics and found that the biggest disagreements between men and women were about “butt stuff.” Even though it’s now been endorsed by Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP, only 48 percent of women were in favor of it. In contrast, 88 percent of men were on board. Sorry, guys. Read more...

This jewelry store's billboard got everyone so riled up even Chelsea Clinton tweeted about it

A family-owned jeweler thought it had a funny, witty take on an old adage so the company put it on a billboard.

Spicer Green Jewelers' cheeky sign told motorists "Sometimes, it's ok to throw rocks at girls..." What the owners thought was an innocuous phrase invoking nostalgia and promoting the store's diamonds and gems quickly turned into a storm of outrage.

Trump's climate order puts 'China first' in clean energy

President Donald Trump is vowing to put "America First" — just not when it comes to the global clean energy race.

The president on Tuesday signed a sweeping executive order that experts say could leave the United States lagging behind China and other nations as manufacturers and investors throw trillions of dollars into renewable energy projects.

The order will start unraveling the Obama administration's key efforts to address climate change. Flanked by coal miners and cabinet officials, Trump vowed to revamp fossil fuel production and erase "job-killing" restrictions on power plants and pipelines. Read more...

Donald Trump is now your last hope for the most basic internet privacy rules

Go ahead and assume that everything you do online is being tracked and sold without your knowledge.

The House voted 231-189 on Tuesday in favor of erasing a rule that would prevent internet service providers from quietly selling off consumer data without notifying those consumers. The rule — enacted last year by the Federal Communications Commission — was so short-lived that it never got the chance to be implemented.

The Senate voted to do the same thing in a 50-48 vote late last week. Now, it's up to President Donald Trump to sign off on the bill to finalize the repeal. The White House formally indicated on Tuesday that Trump supported the bill's repeal.  Read more...

Spiders could eat all humans in one year, and this petition wants to make it happen

The Washington Post either ruined or made your day on Tuesday when it published a bit of an analysis that suggests spiders could eat every human on Earth in one year if they really wanted to.

Now musician John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats is petitioning Senator Al Franken to help make that happen.

It reads:

The WaPo piece that kicked off Darnielle's bid for swift human extinction bases its analysis on a study published this month on the global spider population's eating habits.

Researchers Martin Nyffeler and Klaus Birkhofer found that spiders the world over consume, in total, between 400 and 800-million tons of prey per year. It's a set of numbers large enough to trigger a fear-induced blackout for anyone with arachnophobia. Read more...

NBC will air the 2018 Olympics live because social media always spoils everything

Finally! NBC will air the 2018 Winter Olympics live across all U.S. time zones.

You can thank — or blame — social media

NBC's conundrum was simple and has sparked complaints from fans for years.

It went like this: The Olympic Games are a global event that often happens half a world away from the United States. NBC used to broadcast the most intriguing competitions during U.S. primetime. But as social media and digital technology revolutionized the ease of learning results as they happened (or even watching them happen via online live-stream), NBC's lack of live broadcasts seemed increasingly greedy and outdated.  Read more...

Trump plays the villain in trailer for 'An Inconvenient Truth' sequel

"Climate changes. Truth does not."

That's the tagline for An Inconvenient Sequel, the follow-up to Al Gore's 2007 documentary An Inconvenient Truth.

The documentary — which debuted at Sundance Film Festival — released its first trailer on Tuesday, and it couldn't be more timely.

President Trump plays a prominent role in the trailer, which dropped on the same day that the president signed an executive order aimed at rolling back the Obama Administration's climate policies.

The order reopens federal lands to coal mining and effectively makes it impossible for the U.S. to meet its goals under the Paris Climate Agreement, which Gore helped advocate for in 2015.  Read more...

Americans now trust ads more than news and who can blame them?

Are you tired of doubting information from the news media? Fed up with America's public institutions?

Well, you're in luck, because a new survey has revealed one surprising source that Americans trust in increasing numbers: advertising.

A report released by market research firm YouGov on Monday found the American public's faith in the ads they see has grown over the past few years, just as trust in mass-media news, government and other institutions sinks to new lows.

Nearly three quarters of people surveyed now say they think advertising is generally "honest" — a 16 percent jump from March of 2014.  Read more...

Cyclone Debbie proved one thing: Australians are super weird

Cyclone Debbie was a big one. It tore down trees, smashed wharves and sent people huddling indoors as it made landfall in north Queensland on Tuesday.

But even in the face of wind gusts that reached 260 kilometres (162 miles) per hour, there was plenty of bizarre, occasionally foolhardy behaviour going on in the face of one of the biggest storms to hit that part of the country since Cyclone Yasi in 2011.

Consider that Queenslanders avoided gluten-free bread, despite the supermarket appearing to have no other options.

China just registered 14 million people that never officially existed before

China just registered 14 million people that before this, had never officially existed on record.

That's a population size bigger than the state of Illinois, or Pennsylvania.

The 14.35 million were registered over the past four years. Without official IDs, these citizens would have been previously denied access to education and healthcare benefits, Xinhua reports.

Patrick Stewart is being compared to Kellyanne Conway and he couldn't be happier

If someone asked you to compare Sir Patrick Stewart with another famous person in terms of looks, Kellyanne Conway probably wouldn't be the first to spring to mind.

Then again, you may not have seen this photo.

Something is happening in Hollywood tonightpic.twitter.com/hhDTqOtBx5

Donald Trump switched to an iPhone and that call for an Apple boycott seems so far away now

Remember when U.S. President Donald Trump called for a boycott of Apple products after the company refused to help the FBI gain access to San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook's iPhone?

"What I think you ought to do is boycott Apple until such time as they give that security number," Trump said at the time.

Well, Apple never did comply with the FBI's request, but it appears that all that's in the past now, as Trump is now using an iPhone.

According to Dan Scavino, Jr., Director of Social Media and Senior Advisor to the President, Trump has been using his new iPhone "for the past couple of weeks" on Twitter.  Read more...

'Trump sucks' lollipops let you bite off Trump's head and raise money for Planned Parenthood

One company has come up with a very sweet tooth-friendly way to raise money for Planned Parenthood, and it involves biting off Donald Trump's head.

Alcoholic sweets company Smith and Sinclair is selling limited edition "Trump sucks" lollipops to protest Trump's reinstatement of an anti-abortion policy. 100 percent of the profits from the lollipops will be donated to the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

Image: smith & sinclair

In January, Donald Trump reinstated the Mexico City Policy, known as the global gag rule, which prevents non-governmental organisations working abroad from receiving federal funding for family planning if they perform abortions or even talk to their clients about abortion.

The lollies come in two flavours — butterscotch and sea salt, and strawberry and mint. Priced at £5 ($6.23), the lollies are available for pre-order online. Read more...

Read an exclusive excerpt of Mindy McGinnis' upcoming book 'Given to the Sea'

Sometimes the best way to follow a hit novel is to switch things up and try something completely different.

Or at least that's the case with YA author Mindy McGinnis and her latest book, epic fantasy novel Given to the Sea.

The novel follows four intertwined characters — Khosa, Vincent, Donil and Witt — as each struggles to confront fate and loyalty in the warring kingdom of Stille. At the center of the story is Khosa, a girl destined to sacrifice herself to the sea to save her village. After surviving an attack on her village, Khosa is taken to safety at the royal palace in Stille where she finds herself enmeshed in a love triangle — or probably more apt, love square — that could not only alter her own fate but the fate of her kingdom. Microsoft's Windows 10 Creators Update is an OS done right

With 400 million machines now running Windows 10, it's proving to be an ascendant operating system, and the disastrous Windows 8 is barely a spec in Microsoft’s rear-view mirror.

Even though Windows 10 only has 19 percent of the desktop OS market, according to Net Market Share, and Windows 7 still has almost 50 percent, the momentum is clear. The Windows users who held onto Windows 95 for years, and that still cling to Windows 7 like a lifeboat in rough operating system seas, are slowly but surely migrating to what very well may be the best Windows ever.

Watch the world's first ever monster truck front flip. You know you'll love it.

Even if you don't care about monster truck culture, you've got to admit: watching a big truck flip in the air is pretty damn awesome.

Monster truck driver Lee O’Donnell recently won the 2017 Monster Jam World Finals Freestyle Championship by executing the world's first ever monster truck front flip. Bonus: he didn't even die.

'Outlander' Season 3: 10 burning questions we have about Claire and Jamie's reunion

Because we're not half as good at time travel as Claire Fraser, we won't get to see any new episodes of Outlander until September, which means we have a few empty months in which to occupy ourselves with wild speculation until the droughtlander is officially over.

We've already discussed what we know about Season 3 of Outlander so far, so let's talk about what we don't know, and what we hope to find out when Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) finally return to our screens.

Of course, if you've read the third novel in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, Voyager, you know a lot about what the new season has in store (I'm right there with you) — although that doesn't mean showrunner Ron Moore and his cohorts won't throw in some deviations from the source material, just to keep us on our toes. In the interests of letting non-book fans play along, we're going to pretend that Voyager is not readily available to sate our curiosity, and just go with what we've seen on the show so far.  Read more...

How Star Wars fans are reclaiming the prequels with memes

The three Star Wars prequel movies are finding redemption in the most unlikely location: dank memes on Reddit.

The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were pilloried when they were released (in 1999, 2002 and 2005, respectively). All were critically panned at the time for poor dialogue, uneven plots, cardboard characters and an over-reliance on special effects.

At the same time, the prequels were all box office blockbusters and introduced an entire generation to Star Wars fandom. The Galaxy S8's iris scanner fixes the one thing that made it suck on the Note 7

One of the coolest features from the Galaxy Note 7 (RIP) is back and better on the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

I'm, of course, talking about the Note 7's iris scanner. Samsung introduced the iris scanner on the Note 7 as an alternative way to secure the phone, but it wasn't without its flaws.

Fast as it was, activating the iris scanner was kind of a pain in the ass. Allow me to quote myself:

And:

Samsung's fixed this complicated three-step process on the S8 and S8+.

First, it's now only two steps: Wake the phone up by pressing the power button or virtual home button and then look into the IR sensor on the top bezel. No more, swiping up to bring up the iris scanner preview/PIN lock screen. Read more...

Trolling will get worse before it gets better

If you thought that the internet had a chance of becoming a nicer place at any point in the near future, it might be time to give up hope.

"Harassment, trolls, and an overall tone of griping, distrust, and disgust" will stay the norm on the internet over the next decade, experts told the Pew Research Center in a new report

The Pew Research Center and the Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University surveyed about 1,500 technology experts, scholars, corporate practitioners and government leaders in July and August 2016 for the study, and the results are pretty demoralizing.

Forty-two percent of respondents thought the internet would stay the same sometimes less-than-pleasant place over the next 10 years, while another 39 percent said they thought the internet would become a more negative environment. Just under 20 percent of experts thought the internet had any chance of getting better over the next decade when it comes to harassment and trolling.  Read more...

Samsung Gear VR is now so much easier to use

Sometimes the smallest change can make a world of difference.

Samsung didn’t make any significant changes to its popular Samsung Gear VR virtual reality headset, but the update it announced Wednesday promises to make it considerably easier to use for one simple reason. It now ships with a controller.

In every edition of the headset, which delivers immersive VR by combining the power of Samsung Galaxy smartphones and a headset co-developed by Oculus, the external controls included a touch-sensitive pad and a pair of physical buttons on the right side of the headset. This led to a lot of reaching up to your temple to back out of games and access some other VR controls. It was annoying and fatiguing. Read more...

The ultimate fate of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is perfectly apt

Samsung's infamous Galaxy Note 7 has a new job: Battery security guard.

As Samsung took me and some other journalists on a tour of the company's smartphone factory and battery testing facility in Gumi, just outside of Seoul, South Korea, we saw several parts of the company's new eight-point battery check, created in the wake of the Note 7 debacle and subsequent recall.

One of these is the charging/discharging test, which does exactly what it says. Rows and rows of Galaxy S8 phones, each with a USB cable connected, alternately charge up and charge down, as cameras look on. Read more...

Samsung rises again

The explosion was never supposed to happen.

The Samsung smartphone battery, safely behind glass, began to smoke. In a few seconds it was engulfed in flames. A minute later the flames dissipated, leaving a black, smoldering mess.

"Does that one fail?" one journalist asked, as the Samsung workers, who were leading a rare tour of a smartphone factory and battery testing facility in Gumi, South Korea, tried to continue their rote explanations of the testing machines all around us. One of the machines conducts a compression test, pushing down on the battery with over a ton of force (13 kiloNewtons, to be precise). It was within this machine that the battery exploded. Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8+ are gorgeous—but far from perfect

The Galaxy S8, which launches on April 21, is Samsung's first major phone launch since the Galaxy Note 7 explosions that ultimately ended with two global recalls and the device's discontinuation.

The Galaxy S8 will be judged not only by how it competes with the iPhone 7, but its ability or inability to restore consumer trust in Samsung. Read more...

Samsung goes after Apple at home with new Connect Home hub

How the Note 7 disaster got Samsung to rethink the battery for the Galaxy S8

After Samsung figured out what went wrong with the Galaxy Note 7, it set to get in front of any battery problems for future phones. The main result was the highly publicized eight-point battery check, which incorporates new and existing tests for battery flaws.

What hasn't been revealed until now is that Samsung altered the battery design of its next flagship, the Galaxy S8, in the wake of the Note 7.

On the spec sheet, Samsung rates the S8 at 3,000 milliamp-hours (mAh), the same as its direct predecessor, the Galaxy S7. #BlackWomenAtWork hashtag uncovers the everyday racism black women face at work

The disrespectful and condescending treatment of two prominent black women in the U.S. has sparked a global hashtag campaign about everyday racism.

On Tuesday, Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly said he couldn't listen to Congresswoman Maxine Waters' latest speech about Trump because of her hair, which he called "a wig." Later that day, U.S. Press Secretary Sean Spicer told veteran journalist April Ryan to "stop shaking her head" in response to an answer he gave.

Just like us lazy humans, lazy animals will sometimes do anything they can do avoid even the least bit of overexertion.

This tired little blue bird avoids all responsibilities it has and hitches a ride on a very cool, unaffected cat.

Remember, birds have wings and they can fly, so we'll go ahead an say the bird had a really tough day and it's just done with everything. It has officially hit peak laziness and this cat just gets it.

Animals always seem to have each other's backs and we bet the flight-less bird couldn't be more thankful for this pet pact. Read more...

Buzzfeed got listicle-trolled by the guy suing them in court filing

Buzzfeed got trolled in court.

The website's been embroiled in a lawsuit with a Russian tech executive since early February, a spat that stems from Buzzfeed's decision to publish a dossier of unverified information alleging a number of ways in which Russian officials compromised the electoral affairs of the United States in 2016. The dossier describes how Aleksej Gubarev—CEO of XBT Holdings, of which Florida-based Webzilla is a part—was "recruited under duress" to become a major part of the Russian-led hacks of American campaign officials.

Robots to deliver pizza, lulling us into food-comas for eventual takeover

Domino's Pizza is teaming up with Starship Technologies for a pilot program that will roll out pizza delivery in Europe courtesy of a cute little robot that looks like something that would be friends with R2-D2.

James Corden and Kristen Bell's high-flying duet went a bit haywire

"I SHOULD BE UP THERE!"

The problem with performing stunts during any show is the ever looming possibility that something could go horribly wrongJames Corden and Kristen Bell learned that lesson the hard way Tuesday night on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

The pair started their performance of Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes's "Up Where We Belong" on solid footing but things went a bit haywire when their aerial lifts never quite matched up with one another. At one point, Corden tried to keep the romance of the song going by grabbing Bell's foot but, unfortunately, she kept drifting just out of his reach every time. Read more...

Theresa May signing Brexit letter is the meme you've been waiting for

There's something about photo ops of politicians signing papers that triggers the people's imagination, not to mention an avalanche of memes.

First it was the turn of Donald Trump, who made quite the scene signing troves of controversial executive orders and holding the paper up to the camera. A lot of memes followed, which you can find gathered in the Twitter account @TrumpDraws

Now the memes-mania has crossed the pond and, faithful to the special relationship, targeted Theresa May.

Not so, apparently. Twitter announced Wednesday (amid the frenzy that is Samsung Galaxy S8's release) three new features on Periscope.

Biometrics on the Samsung Galaxy S8 are a confusing mess

The 5.8-inch Samsung Galaxy S8 is a lot of screen and, because of that, it maybe has a tad too many biometric options — meaning you can unlock your phone in maybe too many ways with your hands and face.

The extra-large "infinity display" not only curves over the sides, but extends nearly to the top and bottom edges of the device. There’s a thin strip at the top that accommodates the selfie camera, IR reader, proximity sensor and speaker, but otherwise the screen leaves no room for a physical home button anywhere on the face of the Samsung Galaxy S8 or 6.2-inch S8+. Instead, there’s a virtual Home button that appears in the same spot as a physical one might. When you press that spot, you get a little haptic response.   Read more...

Here’s how much the Galaxy S8 and S8+ will cost you

In Wales there are so many castles that wedding guests turn up at the wrong one

Wales is often called the castle capital of the world, with over 600 castles, of which 100 are still standing.

So you can't really blame this wedding party that turned up to the wrong castle.

Problem is, the two castles are some 124 miles away. The mixup happened in Wales' oldest town of Carmarthen, where the group expected to see Caernarfon Castle.

Instead, there stood the smaller, less majestic but equally historic Carmarthen castle.

Carmarthen town councillor and tour guide Phil Grice said the blunder has happened more than once.  Read more...

Charity is giving away free sex toys to close the orgasm gap

The orgasm gap is real, and one group is doing something very exciting to address it.

Sexy Liberation is an organization of activists who want to make sure all women have access to pleasure. They say their mission is to provide sex toys to those “who are less fortunate, curious or both.” And they’re doing this by offering free or heavily discounted vibrators and other gizmos online.

As the Huffington Post reports, the group is tackling the under-discussed issue of the orgasm gap — the fact that women don’t experience orgasms as often as men during sexual encounters. Sex toys can help with this, of course, but often people don’t seek them out — either because they don’t know they're an option or are too shy to buy them. They can also be very pricey. Read more...

Samsung exec poses one of the most important questions of modern life

You use your smartphone 24/7 — but when was the last time you really stopped to appreciate its less..sexy aspects?

We rave and worship over screen resolution, biometric scanners and high-powered cameras, but there's so much more that goes into your smartphone.

That being so, Samsung Marketing VP Justin Denison asked the age-old question on the Samsung Unpacked event's stage in New York City on Wednesday: When was the last time you admired your phone's bezels?

I know he was trying to make a point about how free and "unboxed" the new Galaxy S8 is, with its super-slim, barely there bezels, but he raises a good point. When was the last time I stared longingly at those static panels, just eating up space on my phone's display?  Read more...

10 YA books we want to see adapted as TV shows

Making books into movies is such old news. It's PEAK TV which means it's peak TV adaptations of novels to maximize screen time, revenue and #buzz.

Netflix will drop 13 Reasons Why this week and is fresh off a successful Series of Unfortunate Events release that quickly garnered a second season order. Books are all over our TVs, whether it's HBO's Big Little Lies or Syfy's The Magicians or miniseries like The Casual Vacancy and Cormoran Strike in the U.K.

Adapting popular books for the small screen isn't new — in fact, in the illustrious '90s, it was the O.G. format for bringing page to screen, as with Goosebumps, The Baby-Sitters Club, Animorphs and other sacred texts of childhood. We're in favor of the format's resurgence, and have some ideas for what to adapt next... Read more...

Google scales China's Great Firewall with Translate app

Google is rolling out its Translate app in China in a first-wave effort to reestablish a foothold in the world's most populous country.

The internet titan has been largely absent from China for the past seven years, after disputes over censorship caused Google to pull many of its services from use. It even moved its operations in the region to Hong Kong.

There has been a web-based version of Translate available to Chinese users for the past eight years — but with a growing base of around 695 million mobile users (roughly half the country's population of 1.4 billion people), an app would be much more accessible.  Read more...

Westeros can't handle the perfection of this 'Game of Thrones' wedding

If you're going to do a themed wedding — particularly a Game of Thrones wedding — you better get it right.

Well, sometimes miracles do happen and we all feel really bad about making fun of themed weddings. Case in point: the Game of Thrones wedding shoot Katie Lee of Katherine Elena Photography recently helped to design for lovebirds Elizabeth and Geoffrey. The photographer took pains to make sure every detail accurately reflected the show for couples who wanted to follow the theme.

Lee explained her process:

"The gowns had a lot to do with finding a happy medium between fantasy and wedding as well," Lee told Mashable. "We knew that we wanted some sort of cape for Austen (who was playing Daenarys) with a very ethereal dress. For Courtney (playing Sansa), we wanted something regal and girly, but very strong. The velvet was the perfect fabric for that and the fur cuffs and stole along with the long train were perfect for her. " Read more...

This rare tiger is on the rebound in Thailand's jungle

The footage offers the first evidence of breeding tigers and cubs in eastern Thailand in more than 15 years. At least two populations of breeding Indochinese tigers still exist in the wild, researchers have confirmed in a new scientific survey.

New 'The Mummy' footage shows terrified Tom Cruise drowning in rats

The operating word for The Mummy, Universal's first in its multi-installment monster-movie franchise, seems to be "terrifying."

Plane crashing, swarmed by ravenous rats, falling down a deep hole, drowning, being chased by swimming zombies while drowning, being mummified and buried alive, stalked by big hairy spiders — it's all there and more.

The studio showed an extended trailer for its June 9 release at Cinemacon on Wednesday, with Tom Cruise introducing via pre-recorded video — and even his word-emphasis was on "terrifying." Tesla's Gigafactory looks like a town in the middle of the Nevada desert

'Persona 5' review round-up: Social sim + dungeon crawler = YAY

These slo-mo videos of mosquitos in flight will soothe the fear out of you

If only mosquitos moved this slowly in real life, giving us ample time to smash or flick them before they took a juicy bite.

The video above shows a mosquito moving 667 times more slowly than normal. Scientists used eight high-speed cameras recording at 10,000 frames per second to capture the meticulous motions.

Their study, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, describes the unique aerodynamic mechanisms that allow mosquitos to fly.

Richard Bomphrey, a biologist at the Royal Veterinary College in London, led the research. His team found that mosquitos' long, thin wings can beat rapidly for their size—at a frequency of around 800 hertz—with shallow strokes that are smaller than those in any other insect group.  Read more...

Would you live in this huge skyscraper suspended from an asteroid?

This is a new one: An architecture firm has released speculative plans to build a tower suspended from an asteroid that would hang down to Earth.

Yes, you read that correctly.

This building — named the Analemma tower — would be the tallest in the world, according to Clouds Architecture Office.

The name of the tower refers to the figure-eight pattern the sun would make if you tracked it at the same time of day from the same place, every day for one year.

"By placing a large asteroid into orbit over earth, a high strength cable can be lowered towards the surface of earth from which a super tall tower can be suspended," Clouds AO said in a statement about the project.  Read more...

As you earn better and better max-level gear in World of Warcraft, one of the satisfying side effects is being able to go back and steamroll through enemies and dungeons that used to give you trouble. Blizzard quietly put a stop to that in the latest patch by making enemies' health scale up with the quality of your gear.

A handful of WoW players took to the game's forums yesterday after noticing that enemy non-player characters (AKA mobs) had higher health when players' item levels (the quality of their gear) were above a certain threshold (850). In the latest expansion, Legion, mobs' levels and corresponding stats scaled up with your character level, but stopped increasing once you hit the max level: 110. That's no longer the case. Kid won't take no for an answer: Builds a Nintendo Switch out of cardboard

How do you think the frame rate is on cardboard Zelda?

We can all relate to this kid. That feeling of really wanting a particular thing — in this case, a Nintendo Switch — but not being able to get it. You can almost imagine his parents saying: "You want one? Build your own."

And so he did.

Twitter user @fraise_ama shot a short video of her little brother's cardboard creation (h/t to Kotaku). It doesn't actually play Switch games, but it is the full package: the tablet, the dock, the Joy-Con controllers and grip, even a tiny cardboard game cartridge (I'm assuming it's Zelda: Breath of the Wild). People are plotting to get back at the politicians who voted to sell your web data

Republicans in the House of Representatives voted yesterday to allow internet service providers to sell your private data—like your web history—without your knowledge. Republicans in the Senate had done the same late last week, all but ensuring that privacy-boosting regulations implemented at the end of the Obama administration would never go into effect.

Now that protecting our web data is a distant dream, some folks figured it was only fair to return the favor to those politicians.

Two GoFundMe accounts were recently started to help their creators purchase the private internet history of Congress members. Read more...

Adorable Pixar short 'Dante's Lunch' introduces the cutest 'Coco' character

Get ready to meet your new favorite Pixar character.

The animation house has just unveiled a two-minute short titled Dante's Lunch, which follows an energetic dog who's hungry for a bone.

Actually getting that bone proves a lot more difficult than Dante anticipated, for reasons you'll soon find out. But this determined doggo is not going to let anything stand in his way – not fences, not food stalls, not cranky humans.

That can-do spirit should serve him well when he accompanies his human friend Miguel to the Land of the Dead, as he'll do this fall in Coco. The Pixar feature arrives in theaters November 22.  Read more...

The next big update to 'Heroes of the Storm' takes a page out of 'Overwatch'

Heroes of the Storm, Blizzard Entertainment's foray into the MOBA genre, is getting a major facelift in 2017 with a new progression system, loot chests and a whole lot of new loot.

In the spotlight video above, Blizzard lays out all the new features and changes coming to the game in an update dubbed Heroes of the Storm 2.0, which currently doesn't have a release date (although it sounds like it's coming very soon). In addition to new collectible loot — like hero voice lines and banners to mark camps or towers you've beaten — Heroes 2.0 is introducing a new way to get that loot that looks very similar to Overwatch: you'll get loot chests after every level. Loot crates can contain the new loot mentioned above, heroes, hero skins, mounts, portraits and, another new feature, sprays. Read more...
