The creators of the world's most hated font still love it
The creators of the most hated font on the web have spoken out with words of love. In an interview with the Guardian, former Microsoft font designer Vincent Connare said he's proud of Comic Sans MS, a sans-serif casual script typeface that has divided the internet since its release in 1994. "It was for novice computer users and it succeeded with that market. People use it inappropriately: if they don’t understand how type works, it won’t have any power or meaning to them," he said. "I once heard a guy at a Rothko show say: “I could have done that.” He clearly doesn’t know anything about art. He’ll probably use Comic Sans without realising it’s wrong in certain circumstances." Sorry to ruin your lives, but Crayola is acting ~cray~ and we really need to address it. Last week, the beloved art supply company that fueled all of your childhood creativity announced it would be doing something huge on March 31 (a.k.a. National Crayon Day). Handing out free art supplies? Organizing the world's largest craft mob™? NOPE. For the first time in over one hundred years, Crayola decided it's time to retire a color from its classic, iconic 24-count box of crayons. The company casually announced its ruthless decision on its social media platforms as though it wouldn't crush anyone who has ever colored outside the lines or dared to dream. My gosh. Then, Crayola had the audacity to announce it would be live-streaming the madness and holding an event in New York's Times Square to really celebrate this tragedy. Read more... In American Gods, belief is power. In the new Starz series, based on the bestselling novel by Neil Gaiman, a war is brewing between the Old Gods and the New, with one unfortunate man, ex-con Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), caught in the middle. The traditional Old Gods, with mythological roots from around the world, fear irrelevance as their believers die off or are seduced by the shiny New Gods, like Media (Gillian Anderson) and Technical Boy (Bruce Langley), who represent our obsessions with technology, celebrity, money and pop culture. Our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man swung by in a new trailer today, so it's time for us to do what neighbors do and get a little nosy. While the new Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer reveals a whole lot more about the superhero vs. supervillain conflict at the heart of the story, it raised as many questions for us as it answered. Let's dive in now and talk about what we've learned – and what we're still dying to know. First, if you haven't seen the new Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer yet, here it is: While the last Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer emphasized the film's high school setting, this one plays up the conflict between our superhero and his supervillain, the Vulture (played by Michael Keaton). It also featured a lot more of Tony Stark and even a brief cameo from a certain other Avenger. So here's what we still want to know: Read more... Kids these days are a lot more old-fashioned than you'd think. A new survey of 3,500 college students done by Abodo, the apartment hunting app, found some surprising results. These kids aren't nearly as modern in their approach to meeting people as you might think. Of those surveyed, only four percent said they preferred to meet people using dating apps. Some 80 percent of college students said they still liked to meet through mutual friends or because of shared interests. The rest said they liked to leave it up to chance and meet people while out and about. How positively old-fashioned. Dating apps may not be their preferred method, though that doesn’t mean these students aren’t still using them. But contrary to belief, apps haven’t led to a culture of endless hookups. A little over 90 percent of these students said they are using Tinder and other apps for purposes other than hooking up. Read more... A rough 2017 continues to unspool for Uber, the ride-share company that can't catch a break—not even in Europe. Come April, Uber will say goodbye to Denmark as the country starts enforcing new taxi laws—requiring taxi meters and surveillance equipment in vehicles—that will make it impossible for Uber to keep operating in Copenhagen, the only city in Denmark where Uber was doing business. Uber says there are 300,000 riders and 2,000 drivers in Denmark currently. Those drivers would also be affected by a new law that sets a limit on issuing new cab licenses per quarter (125) that would dramatically curtail the addition of new drivers. Read more...
