This nonprofit is selling tiny $6 hijabs for children to put on their dolls

It's time to give the hijab a warm and long overdue welcome — at playtime and beyond.

A new initiative called Hello Hijab wants to encourage wider acceptance of hijabs, creating tiny headscarves for children to put on their Barbies and similar dolls. The effort aims to make playtime more inclusive, while also getting children used to seeing headscarves in order to help fight stigma.

The $6 handmade hijabs will be available for U.S. order starting April 1, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to nonprofits serving multicultural communities.

Google swears ads will stop showing up in the absolute worst places

Ads sold through Google have turned up in some pretty horrific corners of the web lately, and many big advertisers are outraged.

The search giant responded to the growing uproar among its client brands on Friday with an unusual public apology and a promise to "do a better job."

"We’ve heard from our advertisers and agencies loud and clear that we can provide simpler, more robust ways to stop their ads from showing against controversial content," Google U.K. managing director Ronan Harris wrote in a blog post.

Google is the biggest advertiser on the internet, and ads bought through its various platforms are spread across hundreds of thousands of websites and millions of YouTube videos.  Read more...

Nothing says 'Will you marry me?' like a bouquet of Doritos at a hockey game

Fire up your tear ducts, friends. This is perhaps the most romantic proposal video we have ever seen. Why? Because of chips.

A woman proposed to her boyfriend at a Vancouver Canucks hockey game on Thursday while he was participating in the very fun Jumbotron activity "Puck Shuffle." This is when you follow a hockey puck on a screen with your eyes, then embarrass yourself in front of an entire arena when you lose track of it.

Luckily, no such tragedy befell Brandon Haubrich: it was all a romantic setup.

The puck on the screen revealed a message: "Will you marry me?" Haubrich's girlfriend, Amanda Mussio, appeared — holding a bouquet of engagement-ready Doritos Ketchup Roses (which are a real thing, btw — thanks, Canada). Read more...

This guy who uses dating apps to score free dinner is your new worst enemy

Step aside, breadcrumbers. Move to the left, ghosters. There’s a new kind of shitty match in town and his name is Dine-and-Dash.

Just when you thought you’d encountered all the different types of dating app disasters, a new one comes along. There’s a Los Angeles man who keeps inviting women to dinner via dating app and then sticking them with the check.

He’s like a much less fun version of Homeless Heidi from High Maintenance, and he appears mainly to have met his dates on Bumble.

His M.O., according to CBS LA, is to invite an unsuspecting woman to dinner and immediately order a hearty meal. (In one case he went for “A glass of pinot, a Caesar salad with a side of shrimp, a steak and a baked potato.”) Then he chows down and gets up to “take a call.” And — surprise! — he disappears, leaving his bewildered date to pay. Someone stole a Secret Service laptop with private Trump and Hillary info on it. Great.

Uh oh, looks like President Donald Trump might have another thing to add to his growing list of cybersecurity worries.

On Thursday, a laptop computer containing private information was stolen from a Secret Service agent's vehicle in New York, according to the law enforcement agency.

ABC News reported the computer contains Trump Tower floor plans, details about Hillary Clinton's email investigation and other national security information.

Wonderful. Just what America needs right now.

On Friday, the Secret Service released the following statement confirming the theft and stating the laptop is super secure. Read more...

Women found Trump's body language towards Angela Merkel so painfully familiar

No matter how hard we want it to, 2016's election never seems to fully go away.

For many women who chose to watch President Trump's joint press conference with Angela Merkel on Friday, the experience hit far too close to home. Not only did Trump's body language mirror his movements on the debate stage with Hillary Clinton (when will that memory go away?) it reminded them of their own personal interactions with powerful men who seemed to resent their presence.

If you haven't watched the full conference, please don't. Watch this very brief clip instead, where Chancellor Merkel asks Trump for a handshake, only to have it be rejected. It's not just that Trump refuses to shake her hand. He doesn't even look her in the eye.  Read more...

Twitter is slamming Donald Trump after awkward press conference with Angela Merkel

Here comes today's least surprising news. *Insert long, exasperated sigh.*

President Trump is getting destroyed on Twitter after his extremely awkward press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

After refusing to shake the Chancellor's hand (help) and suggesting that they were both wiretapped by President Obama (please help), people had their Twitter fingers ready for Trump - and let's just say, they did not hold back.

The best part of this is Merkel looking at the audience like: "Can you believe this schmuck?"pic.twitter.com/0hcdAA19Na

FBI arrested the troll who sent that seizure-inducing tweet to a journalist with epilepsy

A tweet has led to an arrest — three months after it was sent.

Back in December, Vanity Fair contributing editor and Newsweek senior writer Kurt Eichenwald shared that someone had targeted him with a strobing tweet. The flashing tweet gave the journalist a seizure. He is a known epileptic and Eichenwald believed he had been targeted for his political views.

So March Madness has Bill Murray going for it, which is nice

It's a scientific fact that Bill Murray makes everything better.

Even March Madness

Murray is a noted Chicago sports fan. But one year after becoming a sad NCAA Tournament meme, he's again in the stands supporting the Xavier University Musketeers out of Cincinnati, Ohio.

But happy Bill Murray was a delightful sight in the stands during a Xavier win Thursday, and the species may well be spotted again Saturday.

If you're wondering or have forgotten what exactly is going on, here's the deal.

Luke Murray, son of Bill, is a Xavier assistant coach. Musketeers head man Chris Mack even calls him "one of the top young assistant coaches in America." The very last line of Luke's bio on the Xavier website reads casually: "His father, Bill, is an Emmy and Golden Globe winning comedian and actor." Read more...

Jet.com bought ModCloth, which makes a strange kind of sense

Amazon has its private labels, and Walmart has Jet.com, which now has ModCloth.

The e-commerce subsidiary of Walmart on Friday closed a deal to buy ModCloth, the popular online retailer. The companies declined to confirm the price of the deal, but earlier reports pegged it between $50 and $75 million.

Jezebel first reported news of the acquisition earlier this week before the deal closed. The news was noteworthy, since ModCloth is known for its alternative, indie vibe and size-inclusive philosophy — kind of the opposite of Walmart. The indie retailer is most popular with 18- to 35-year-old women, a coveted group Walmart likely wants to woo.  Read more...

Google's figured out how to store even more selfies on your phone

If there's anything the lovable nerds in Silicon Valley have taught me, it's that compression technology is indeed sexy.

Who am I kidding? It's not, but compression technology is very practical.

Take Google's new open source JPEG algorithm called Guetzli — it can dramatically reduce the size of JPEG images without loss of quality, according to ArsTechnica

As per Google's Research Blog and GitHub, Guetzli-generated JPEG files are up to 35 percent smaller than most current JPEGs encoded with the widely-used libjpeg encoder. With smaller JPEG files, you'll not only be able to store more pictures (and most importantly: selfies) on your phone and computer, but websites that use Guetzli-encoded JPEGs would also (at least, in theory) load faster. Trump wants to kill the energy program that helped make Tesla what it is today

President Donald Trump wants to swing a heavy ax at government programs for innovative clean energy technologies — including an initiative that once backed Tesla.

Trump's budget proposal, unveiled on Thursday, would eliminate a major loan program that helped Tesla roll out its all-electric Model S. The costly but zero-emissions sedan later fueled Tesla's rise as one of the world's largest electric automakers.

The Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) program is one of dozens of climate-related initiatives that Trump has placed on his chopping block.  Read more...

Ugh, Facebook, don't give us even more tabs

Facebook constantly tweaks its user experience to give its members what they want, but the latest update is sure to drive pop-up haters, i.e. everyone, up the wall.

We spotted a new feature Friday that threads comment replies into a new pop-up window, just like the separate conversation tabs used for chatting with friends on Messenger when you have your News Feed open. That type of instant access might be useful if you're deeply entrenched in a comment war, but in just about any other circumstance, it's intrusive and demanding.

The real story behind Trump's fake Irish/Nigerian 'proverb'

Donald Trump set heads to scratching on the eve of St. Patrick's Day by sharing a proverb with his gathered "Irish friends" that was neither Irish nor a proverb, as far as anyone could tell. Unfortunately for lovers of irony everywhere, however, it was also not the work of a 30-something Nigerian banker, as many Google searchers suggested after finding the stanzas listed on Poemhunter.com, in a submission by Albashir Adam Alhassan.

While Alhassan has since assured CNN, NBC News and Buzzfeed that the work is most definitely his, a quick search of Trump's "proverb" immediately turns up online in inspirational quote books, toast books, books full of blessings, homemade books, memes and many religious books. Read more...

Angela Merkel's powerful side-eye at Ivanka Trump is asking the question we're all wondering

Ivanka Trump gatecrashed Angela Merkel's ill-fated summit with Donald Trump Friday, the latest in a line of questionable appearances at gatherings where she probably doesn't really belong.

The reality TV star, businesswoman and jewelry vendor had a seat next to the German chancellor, who has a Ph.D. in chemistry and speaks fluent Russian, for the roundtable discussion with German and U.S. business leaders. Twitter was quick to spot a theme in the photos that emerged from the encounter.

Sorry Trump, even Fox News thinks your wiretapping claim is BS

Not everyone at Donald Trump's favorite news network is gobbling up his latest piece of red meat.

Fox News anchor Shep Smith countered Trump once again Friday, this time aiming his measured, declaratory tone at the president's outlandish claim that his predecessor was wiretapping him.

"Fox News knows of no evidence of any kind that the now president of the United States was surveilled at any time in any way," anchor Shep Smith said during a Friday broadcast. "Full stop."

Smith's "full stop" comment, which was spread widely on social media, comes after analyst Andrew Napolitano claimed on Fox & Friends Tuesday that "three intelligence sources have informed Fox News that President Obama went outside the chain of command" and requested British intelligence officials spy on Trump. Trump found a way to kill the future of public service

There are so many wildly upsetting cuts in Trump's budget proposal that it's almost impossible to determine which one is the most cruel.

The indigenous people of Papua New Guinea saved hundreds of wounded soldiers in WWII

Dec. 25, 1942

The three-year-long New Guinea campaign was one of the most arduous of World War II, with Allied and Japanese forces sustaining tens of thousands of casualties as they struggled for control of the world’s second-largest island.

Deadlier than enemy fire, though, was the environment itself — far more Japanese died of starvation and disease than in combat. Numerous operations were hampered by the difficulties of maintaining supply lines through miles of thick jungle, steep slopes and swift rivers. Read more...

'Walking Dead' boss says Season 7 finale will be 'the end of a chapter'

The Walking Dead is rapidly approaching 100 episodes (time flies when you're crushing zombie skulls like watermelons), but according to its showrunner Scott Gimple, they're not planning on cancelling the apocalypse any time soon.

The series has already been renewed for Season 8, but Gimple apparently has his sights set on a much loftier goal.

"Episode 801, the first episode of Season 8, is gonna be the 100th episode. The first episode is less about that we reached 100 episodes, it’s more about setting up the next 100 episodes," he revealed during a panel at Los Angeles' annual PaleyFest television festival on Friday night. "The end of this season is very much the end of a chapter; it's a conclusion that promises this epic story ahead. It’s about setting up this gigantic, epic tale to come, not only in Season 8, but beyond." Read more...

This 'passive-aggressive art gallery' is the perfect petty roommate prank

Twitter learned a valuable lesson this week: passive-aggressively pranking your messy roommate can double as fine art.

To be fair, not all messy roommates are  created equal. There's the saucepan-in-sink roommate, for example, who likes to fill dirty pots with water and "let them soak" for weeks. There's the couch roommate, who stores at least a quarter of their belongings on the sofa for reasons you'll never understand.

The guy behind the '4-hour workweek' thinks you should work for 4 hours at WeWork

Tim Ferriss made his name on productivity: how to get the most out of your workday, and your life, in just four hours. The Silicon Valley investor—in startups like Uber and TaskRabbit—moved to become a hyper-productivity guru with his books The 4-Hour Workweek, The 4-Hour Body and The 4-Hour Chef.

Now, Ferriss is partnering with co-working chain WeWork on their new Creator Awards, which will give out $20 million to startups who compete. He answered a few questions from Mashable about why WeWork is his next project, and how to be productive there.

Why are you working with WeWork?

I’ve long been a fan of WeWork’s mission to help people make a life, not just a living. I also believe that we are the company we keep. What’s so powerful about The Creator Awards, and WeWork as a platform, is the ability to connect individual entrepreneurs who might otherwise be going it alone…or who might feel alone.  Supportive communities are just as vital as money, and I'm excited to work with WeWork to bring great people together. Snapchat needs to evolve—or it'll be brutally slaughtered by Facebook.

For Facebook, Snapchat isn't an app to be feared.

It's a feature to be absorbed.

The world's largest social network  relentlessly taunts Snap Inc., their much-smaller competitor, known mostly for its disappearing messages app, by lifting Snap's core functionality, and dumping it into a variety of products it doesn't really belong.
