This blimp that looks like a butt is the largest aircraft in the world

It's a bird, it's a plane, oh nope, hold on... it's that aircraft that looks like a butt.

Airlander 10, the world's largest aircraft — appropriately nicknamed the "Flying Bum" for its resemblance to a rear end — is back in action following a crash that took place in August 2016.

According to a news release from the aircraft's developer, Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV), the Airlander 10 was repaired after it crashed during its second test flight at Cardington Airfield.

Several flight deck instrument panels, along with the overhead console and wiring, sustained damage after the aircraft took a nosedive during landing, but luckily there were no injuries. Read more...

This group is trying to build a pyramid of 'Jerry Maguire' video tapes in the desert

Last month it was an art installation filled with thousands of VHS tapes of Tom Cruise's 90s classic film Jerry Maguire. Now comedy video collective Everything is Terrible! is dreaming even bigger, imagining a giant pyramid of those video tapes.

The group is really serious about making their desert pyramid of tapes, which they call Jerrys, a reality. After hosting their VHS-filled pop-up in a Los Angeles "video store" last month with 14,000 copies of the movie, they have taken their growing collection of old-school tapes to the next level.

Twitter's backend is breaking under Trump's tweets

Imagine signing onto Twitter to fire off a couple responses to @RealDonaldTrump's latest 140-character missive. Immediately, you start getting a ton of likes and replies, but within several hours, the entire conversation just...evaporates into thin air.

What happened?

Whether in support or in anger, those taking the time to tweet at Trump are now seeing this glitch happen all the time. Users' tweets are increasingly being "orphaned" or "disconnected" from the original thread.

The bug has caused some users to worry that the White House, Trump's supporters, or Twitter's employees could be censoring their messages to the president. Read more...

I love social media, even if it doesn't love me back

I’ve checked my various social feeds at least a dozen times this morning. I stare into the void watching a space that never looks back in search of something I can’t even define.

This is my unhealthy social media love story.

I’ve been on social media for almost a decade, and even when I wasn’t, I wanted to be, jealous of those college students who got involved with Facebook early.

I’ve been, if I’m being honest, a fickle social media lover. First obsessing over Twitter, then flirting with Vine and even enjoying a brief dalliance with Google +

This much-needed feature is going to make Sonos speakers way more fun

You’ll finally be able to control your Sonos speakers with Amazon's Alexa — and it might not be the only digital assistant in the device’s future.

The news was revealed earlier this week at an event in Boston, where Sonos executives also made it sound like the company is gunning for even more AI partners, which could provide users with a "brand-agnostic voice control system," CNET reports.

Sonos VP of software Antoine Leblond took the stage and paused the music playing over the room's Play:5 speakers by giving Alexa a command. The device didn't have the AI built-in, though — the music was being played through the speakers via an Amazon Echo Dot, which is how Alexa joined the party.    Read more...

Hackers put SNES, Sega Genesis and Game Boy games on the NES Classic

For some people, playing NES games on the NES Classic just isn't enough. They want the throwback system to play games from the SNES, Game Boy, Sega Genesis and Atari 2600, too.

YouTub user Soulctcher recorded use of an NES Classic hack that runs games from multiple different consoles, showing off gameplay from Super Metroid for the SNES, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for the Game Boy, Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis, Pitfall! for the Atari 2600 and more.

The hack allows NES Classic owners to install and load files that didn't come packaged with the console. At first, hackers found a way to get other NES ROMs onto the console using a method that spread pretty quickly in January. But some hackers didn't want to stop at simply expanding the NES Classic library. Read more...

iMessage is the only thing keeping me on an iPhone

There once was a time I texted without fireworks. I'm never going back.

Honestly, is there a better way to say you have a stomachache than with virtual pyrotechnics? Nope, and it doesn't even stop there. You communicate your malaise with fireworks and then toss in an animation of an obese cat eating pizza. And ice cream.

This is what it's like to text with an iPhone in 2017. Apple's iOS 10 update transformed iMessage, the iPhone-to-iPhone texting service, allowing users to speak to one another with a variety of ridiculous effects. You could call it indulgent, but a better word might be "personal". iMessage has become the most individual form of texting on the market, and it's good enough to keep me, a lapsed Android-lover, on Apple's system forever. Apple fixed a bug that accidentally kept your cleared browsing data on iCloud

Apple has fixed a bug that was inadvertently storing users' cleared browsing history on iCloud.

Vladimir Katalov, CEO of security firm ElcomSoft, recently told Forbes that he discovered browsing history dating back as far as a year on his iCloud account—despite having cleared it. Katalov did this using ElcomSoft's own "phone breaker" software, which allows you to download your iCloud data, including your old browsing records.

Katalov's claim was reportedly validated by an iOS forensics expert, and a Forbes reporter conducted a test on his own device by running the software on his iCloud account. He found browsing data from November 27, 2015, including the visit counts, dates and search terms. Shortly after the article was published, Katalov reportedly reached out to Forbes and said that his old browsing history was no longer accessible.  Read more...

This creepy robot walks like a chicken and could someday deliver your groceries

This could be the future of robotics — and it kind of looks like a chicken.

Agility Robotics unveiled a bipedal robot called Cassie this week. The company, which spun out of the ATRIAS project at Oregon State University, is focused on "legged locomotion" and hopes to someday engineer robots that can walk just like people.

That should be incredibly useful in a wide range of applications — but it needs some more work before then.

Cassie was built using a 16-month, $1-million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The custom design took cues from animal morphology and behavior, including a hip joint with three degrees of freedom and flexible ankle joints, just like a human's leg. This makes it much more stable than the team's previous designs, whose motor-heavy systems were inefficient.     Read more...

Ford just made a $1 billion investment in a self-driving AI company no one has heard of

Ford just announced a massive $1 billion investment in a startup that hadn't even gone public before today.

It's one of the auto industry's single largest investments in self-driving tech and sounds like a desperate move to stay relevant in the self-driving race with Waymo, Tesla and others — until you find out the company, Argo AI, is led by two self-driving tech industry vets who held leadership positions on the autonomous development teams at Google and Uber before striking out on their own.

This follows Ford's pledge to put fully autonomous cars on roads by 2021 and rebrand as a "mobility company." Ford's Autonomous Vehicle Development program recently unveiled a new version of its self-driving Fusion design, but this new investment will shift focus to the development of a virtual driver system, which serves as  the "brains" that control autonomous vehicles.   Read more...

James Dolan pours lighter fluid on the raging dumpster fire that is the New York Knicks

Rarely are sports fans treated to a spectacle of such pyrotechnic intensity as the raging dumpster fire that was the New York Knicks this week.

This is about as low as it gets for a pro sports franchise: The team president appears to subtweet its star; one day later, a retired legend is tackled court-side by team security as appalled fans chant his name. Oh, and the team sucks too.

Put on that flame-retardant suit, reader. We're about to go dumpster diving.

Charles Oakley is a Knicks legend of the '90s for his heart and toughness during New York's last sustained run as a respectable NBA team. Yet there he was at Madison Square Garden for a Knicks home game on Wednesday night — not being feted for his years of passionate play or even simply taking in the game. No, there he was at the Garden being confronted by security, tackled by several men, then surrounded while on the ground, handcuffed and arrested. Video of the incident is surreal.  Read more...

This 1979 Stephen King novel is a chilling prediction of Donald Trump's rise

"The man is a clown. He goes charging around the speaking platform, like that at every rally [...] He's a clown, so what? [...] So people want a giggle or two. Even more, they want to thumb their noses at a political establishment that doesn't seem able to solve anything."

It would be easy to mistake that as an old quote about Donald Trump. Maybe a comment from a political analyst in the early stages of his campaign. Maybe a line from an interview with a member of the public discussing the ever-increasing popularity of his 2015 rallies.

It's not, though.

Despite the similarities, that's actually a line spoken by a character in the 1979 Stephen King novel The Dead ZoneRead more...

When the trolls come at you over birth control coverage, here's what to say

If you're a woman who, on the internet, has tried to defend widely accessible and affordable birth control, you probably know all the counterarguments by heart: "Why should my tax dollars make it easy for you to have sex?" "I don't want to pay for what you do in the bedroom""Don't have sex if you can't afford to get pregnant"

Such comments conveniently gloss over the complexities of real life. But it's also easy to trot out similarly simplistic responses when arguing for birth control. Women and their allies are tired of having to defend something that seems basic, but the important thing to remember is that you're not trying to convince the troll. Instead you want to sway the social media audience watching your exchange. You're playing to the crowd.  Read more...

Following the invasion of Poland by Germany in September 1939, construction began on a complex of camps to house thousands of Polish political prisoners — Auschwitz.

The first prisoners began to arrive in the spring of 1940. The camp rapidly expanded and was repurposed into one of the central points for the concentration and murder of Jews

Before the liberation of the camp by Soviet troops on Jan. 27, 1945, 1.1 million people, 90 percent of them Jewish, died there. They were systematically exterminated in gas chambers or killed by beatings, starvation, exhaustion or disease. Read more...
