'Call of Duty' developer takes us on a tour of the new Zombies map

"Rave in the Redwoods," the new Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Zombies map, is pretty damn cool.

I got a tour of the map on Feb. 7 from none other than Lee Ross, associate project director on Infinite Warfare's Zombies maps. For 20 rounds, we smashed the undead and talked at length about Call of Duty, broadcasting every moment of it on Facebook Live.

You can watch the rerun right here on Mashable's shiny, new Gaming portal on Facebook:

The new addition — which arrived as part of the "Sabotage" DLC — sends up to four players off to help Kevin Smith (no, really) and TRIP THEIR FACES OFF in the woods of northern California. It would be a fun party, if not for all the zombies. Read more...

Kylie Jenner might be scamming lip kit customers by repackaging old shades

Kylie Jenner is the beauty guru version of Pinnochio, except if she lies, her lips might get plumper and her wallet gets fatter.

Now Kylie Costmetics is embroiled in another kontroversy after fans started accusing the celebriteen of repackaging old lip kit shades as "limited edition" hues. The Holiday Lip Kit Set included a shade called Blitzen, billed as a "warmer version" of the existing shade, Spice.

But customers were disappointed to find out that if there is a difference between Spice and Blitzen, it's barely distinguishable.

Intel meeting with Trump turned into a really awkward infomercial

Chip tech giant Intel held a press conference with Donald Trump Wednesday, but instead of just the usual photo op and quick announcement about jobs and innovation, this meeting awkwardly veered into infomercial territory.

It started typically enough with the company's CEO Brian Krzanich announcing a major push for U.S.-based jobs with a $7 billion investment in an Arizona factory. But then Trump pressured him into showing off and talking up the company's newest technology.

With the news of some 3,000 high tech jobs and thousands of other support jobs out of the way, things could then shift into full-on infomercial. Pushed by Trump, who thickly doled out the praise for Intel, Krzanich ended up on camera holding up his shiny gold wafer, or silicon chip. Read more...

Oculus Rift gets voice-controlled search in VR

One the most frequent requests from Oculus Rift users is the ability to search for apps on Oculus Home, a basic but missing tool in the Oculus virtual reality environment — until now.

A new update, only available to some users right now, offers a search feature called Oculus Voice.

Currently, for most users, when you put on the Rift headset and open Oculus Home, you're forced to scroll through dozens of apps, page by page, a time-consuming process that doesn't encourage exploration of the Oculus store.

But a demonstration of the new Oculus Voice feature, from a user who first surfaced the feature on Reddit, shows the ability to handle a number of Oculus Home functions beyond search.  Read more...

San Jose Sharks trolled the Atlanta Falcons after they dropped a lead and lost in overtime

Oh, the agony of watching a big lead slip right through your fingers on the biggest stage.

The Golden State Warriors have felt it. The Cleveland Indians have felt it. And, most recently, the Atlanta Falcons have felt it.

The San Jose Sharks poked some fun at the Falcons, who on Sunday led Super Bowl LI 28-3 but fell victim to the Patriots historic comeback, eventually losing in overtime. San Jose experienced a similar pain on Wednesday night, though their 5-4 overtime loss to Buffalo was largely inconsequential, considering it came midseason. Read more...

Silicon Valley is struggling to work together against Trump's havoc

On a daily basis, Stewart Butterfield roasts Donald Trump on Twitter.

The Slack CEO is among the most outspoken leaders in the tech community when it comes to the new president, which made it all the more surprising to see his company missing from the list of 97 tech giants that signed onto an amicus brief opposing the recent Muslim travel ban—arguably the most unified, aggressive action ever taken by the industry on a political issue.

Turns out, Slack wasn't a holdout. They just got left off an email.

Everything we know about Disney's secretive Star Wars Land

Disney theme park guests on both coasts will get to visit a galaxy far, far away — but only after they've waited in line for two more Star Wars movies.

That was the word from Disney CEO Bob Iger, who announced in an earnings call Tuesday that two "Star Wars Lands" will open some time in 2019 — one in Anaheim, one in Orlando. In other words, after The Last Jedi (2017) and the as-yet-untitled Han Solo movie (2018) have come and gone from theaters.

The lack of any further detail from Iger is right in line with what we've come to expect from Disney regarding Star Wars Land: a level of secrecy that would make the Emperor proud. Here are the few details we know. Read more...

Bathrobe Trump gets comfortable in some strange places with this Photoshop battle

Trump loves a good bathrobe as much as Reddit loves a Photoshop battle.

It all started when a New York Times story reported on President Donald Trump's television habits, saying he channel surfs cable news in a bathrobe.

It then escalated when White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer insisted that the president does not do that and does not own a bathrobe.

Now people have become mildly obsessed with Donald Trump and his bathrobe, old evidence of which was easily found despite Spicer's comments.

Inevitably, Donald Trump's bathrobe has now made its way to Reddit where it has become the center of a heated Photoshop battle. Read more...

High school hoop star LaMelo Ball's 92-point game ignites backlash online and IRL

LaMelo Ball, a lanky high school sophomore from Southern California, scored 92 points in a high school basketball game. That is an absolutely astounding, astonishing, incredible and damn-near inconceivable amount of points for anyone to score in a basketball game — much less coming from a high school sophomore.

But if only this story were quite that simple.

Ball is a 6-foot-2, 160-pound point guard for Chino Hills High School who's ranked 16th nationally in class by ESPN.com. He took 61 shots in Tuesday's 32-minute game against Los Osos High and made 37 of them. He shot a scintillating 30-39 from two-point range and a not-that-good 7-22 from three-point range, according to a box score posted online after the game.  Read more...

Facebook will block certain ads if they're targeted by race

Facebook is taking more steps to address accusations that it enables advertisers to illegally discriminate by race.

The social network announced Tuesday that it would begin using its artificial intelligence tools to identify ads for housing, credit and jobs, then shut them down if they are targeted by "ethnic affinity" — essentially Facebook's proxy for race.

When Facebook recognizes that an advertiser is attempting to buy an ad in any of those categories, a window will now appear asking the buyer to confirm that they are following the company's discrimination rules. Read more...

Wikipedia pretty much bans 'Daily Mail' as 'unreliable' source

Prepare yourself for less celebrity gossip on Wikipedia.

Editors for the site (who are all volunteers) voted Wednesday to almost entirely ban the British tabloid newspaper the Daily Mail as a source, calling the publication "generally unreliable."

The Daily Mail's reliability has been a point of contention on the user-edited encyclopedia site since 2015 if not earlier. But discussion about its efficacy as a source was revived in early January when one user led the campaign against the Daily Mail.

Editor Hillbillyholiday argued during a discussion that the outlet is untrustworthy for science-related stories, inappropriately posts photos of children and has limited credibility even with direct quotes and interviews. Read more...

Something is very, very wrong with the Arctic climate

This Arctic winter has startled even the most even-keeled scientists, with records set for low sea ice extent, high temperatures and other indicators of a climate gone awry.

Sea ice has plummeted to record lows and stayed there as pulses of unusually warm air have swept across the region, with the latest one set to reach the North Pole on Thursday. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), sea ice extent hit record lows for the months of November, December and January.

Apple dominates the smartwatch market — but competition looms

With the release of its record-breaking earnings report for the fourth quarter of 2016, Apple silenced its haters (at least for a moment) and gave us fewer reasons to doubt its decision making process. Still, the company won't reveal any specifics about the Apple Watch, but using new smartwatch market projections from analysts, we can take a stab at just how well the Apple Watch sold last year.

If projections from market research firm Canalys are accurate, the Apple Watch absolutely dominated the wearable market in the last quarter and in 2016 as a whole, setting records and taking up nearly three times the market share of its nearest competitor. That type of dominance is exactly what Apple needs going forward, since the smartwatch field is about to get much more crowded with entries from big name challengers.  Read more...

How #DeleteUber should serve as a stark warning for all startups

The ferocity of the #DeleteUber movement is a warning for technology companies: If you're going to benefit from the industry's capitalist-hippy playbook in good weather, customers will expect you to back those values when things get stormy.

Only a handful of companies have Uber's visibility and reputation, but its missteps during the backlash to Donald Trump's "Muslim travel ban" — especially being perceived to "strike break" a taxi protest at New York's John F. Kennedy airport — indicate what may be at risk when conservative governments clash with a young, activist consumer base.

Apple rumored to remove even more buttons from the iPhone

If a new bombshell report from Fast Company is to be believed, the iPhone 8 sounds like it's going to have an even more radical design than we thought.

The most insane nugget is that Apple might remove all physical buttons (volume, power and mute switch) and replace them with "touch-sensitive inlays in the metal."

With no physical buttons to distract from the design, the iPhone 8, would inch closer towards becoming a single monolithic slab of glass — a pure, minimalist design that Apple's chief design officer Jony Ive would no doubt love. Read more...

Star Trek fans will finally get a 'Deep Space 9' sequel, but there's a catch

It’s finally time to go deep on Deep Space Nine.

In the Star Trek universe, Deep Space Nine is not necessarily one of its brightest stars. Not because the show wasn’t as good, interesting or long-lived as the others (it ran seven seasons from 1993-1999), but because it was unlike any Star Trek property that’s come before or since.

Darker, moodier and, perhaps, more static than the rest, DS9 placed its crew in a space station that never moved. It has enjoyed less acclaim and nostalgia than the original series or Star Trek: Next Generation and sits somewhere above the short-lived Enterprise series and just below Voyager on the Star Trek interest scale. Get your house fully connected with a smart light switch

Out of all the home appliances you'd expect could be smart-ified as part of the connected home, the classic light switch might be last on the list. It's basic, with no apparent need for bells and whistles in smart homes where lights are controlled by smartphone — but when you add some connectivity and a color display (who doesn't love touch screens?) it can become a smart light switch system that controls the whole house.

Brilliant Control looks to replace plain old-fashioned light switches with mini smart hubs, complete with 5-inch LCD touch displays, Wi-Fi, motion and Amazon Alexa voice control built-in. Instead of just turning on and off the lights, the system can act as a control panel for an entire connected home, bringing security, music, lighting and climate tech all under one domain.  Read more...

Fancy a Facebook Live at 17,000 ft? It might soon be possible at the Everest base camp

Soon you will have internet access in the Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain. Visitors will be able to tweet, chat, email and share  from the Lukla-Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Base Camp with the help of free Wi-Fi offered by Nepal.

Its state-run regulator, Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), announced on Wednesday that it plans to set up free W-Fi zones along the Everest base camp, a hugely popular destination for trekkers and mountaineers.

The service will operate on the “Okumura Model," which uses low-cost optical fiber cables for high-speed internet. Special cold-and-ice-resistant optical fibers will be used, and if they don't work in the high altitudes, other technologies such as micro-wave will be used.   Read more...

Google is bringing a rainforest right to your smartphone

Most of us have never stepped anywhere near a rainforest, much less had a chance to explore it — something Google hopes to change with its new augmented reality experience.

The "Into the Wild" exhibit sees some 1,000 square meters turned into a virtual rainforest, home to orangutans, Malayan tapirs and tiny mouse deer.

In order to view the sights, visitors pick up a Lenovo smartphone enabled with Tango, an augmented reality platform developed by Google.

The exhibition, the first of its kind to launch in Asia, is held at Singapore's ArtScience Museum. Read more...

Graphic designer and video maker Matteo Archondis used only Google Maps and Earth screenshots — 3,305 of them to be exact — to smoothly take the viewer on a long-distance trip.

There's a chocolate manhole cover in Japan and we don't know why

It's a weird shape to mold chocolate into.

@38beem, a Japanese Twitter user — in an effort to make a chocolatey gift for Valentine's Day — created what seems to be a manhole cover set into a sidewalk out of chocolate.

He documented the process on Twitter:

First, he produced a silicone mold for the manhole cover, then filled it with chocolate.

'Fake news' has officially hit Britain and people can't cope

LONDON — The term "fake news" feels already like a bad hangover from 2016, when bogus websites published false or hyper-partisan news — such as the conspiracy theory about Hillary Clinton running a child sex ring inside a Washington D.C. restaurant.

President Donald Trump and his staff have twisted the term's original meaning, by repeatedly using "fake news" to discredit reporting from the "mainstream media," notably CNN and the New York Times

But we, in the UK, truly believed we were safe from such a craze exploding across the pond.  Read more...

'Beauty and the Best' mashed up with 'Harry Potter' makes a bizarre love story

Belle (or is it Hermione Granger?) and Lord Voldemort aren't an obvious pairing, but this trailer definitely makes a case for the couple.

The YouTube channel PistolShrimps is known for parodies and movie mashups. They re-created a trailer called Beauty and Lord Voldemort by replacing the Beast with Lord Voldemort and adding scenes from the Harry Potter films. The results are both hilarious and heart-warming.

If only all Lord Voldemort needed to put an end to his evil ways was true love.

YouTube Go is finally here, kind of

It seems Google is all prepared to release its anticipated data-conscious YouTube Go app to the public.

An early version of YouTube Go hit the Google Play Store Wednesday. The app, as promised by Google last year, is light (less than 10MB in size) and features an option to share files using Wi-Fi Direct protocol.

Google announced YouTube Go at an event in India last September. The company is positioning the service as a "faster, and lighter" version of its giant video hosting and streaming service. It's also an extension to the download feature YouTube introduced to its primary app for offline viewing in 2014. Read more...

This is what Mr. Darcy would have actually looked like — and it's not pretty

It's fair to say that Colin Firth's rendition of Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice captured the hearts of countless Jane Austen fans.

But a group of UK academics have discovered that Austen's fictional heartthrob Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy didn't look at all like the actors — Colin Firth and Matthew MacFadyen — who've played him.

The research — led by Professor John Sutherland from University College London and Professor Amanda Vickery from Queen Mary University of London — involved a month-long study to gain a historically accurate idea of what Darcy would have looked like

The academics looked into Austen's personal life and relationships to draw conclusions about who might have been the inspiration for Mr Darcy. They also looked into the descriptions and illustrations  of the character and the socio-economic and cultural factors that would contribute to Darcy's background, appearance and lifestyle.  Read more...

Trump's antics didn't help Twitter bring in more revenue

Twitter isn't having a good moment.

The microblogging site turned live video app brought in $717 million this past quarter, quite overwhelmingly missing analysts' expectations of $740.1 million.

That's not good news for Twitter, which has had a contentious relationship with Wall Street due to stagnant user growth and an inability to turn a profit. Meanwhile, its similarly aged foe Facebook pulled in $8.8 billion in revenue over the same quarter.

At least Twitter added new users. A year ago, Twitter reported it had actually lost more users than it gained. Over the last three months, Twitter added 2.6 million monthly active users, bringing its total up to 319 million.  Read more...

Beauty vlogger wants you to apply your makeup with a condom

Beauty blenders are having a moment right now. But some sponges can prove far too absorbent when you're putting on your foundation.

Beauty vlogger Laila Tahri thinks she's found the perfect solution for that and it comes in the form of a condom. Yep, a condom.

In her tutorial, Tahri tears open the wrapper before washing the condom, which she says is important because it has "a lot of this stuff on it". Then Tahri puts her beauty blender inside it and places some foundation on the condom.

Then, she begins dabbing dots of foundation on her face with the condom and using it to blend her makeup. "It blended out my foundation so beautifully!" says Tahri.

Ebay founder backs tests to give people free money

The idea of a universal basic income has found growing support in Silicon Valley as robots threaten to radically change the nature of work.

Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar is the latest tech bigwig to get behind the concept. His philanthropic investment firm, the Omidyar Network, announced Wednesday that it will give nearly half a billion dollars to a group testing the policy in Kenya.

Universal basic income is the notion that a government should guarantee every citizen a yearly sum of money, no strings attached. The thinking is that such a program would relieve economic stress as automation technology severely reduces the demand for labor. Read more...

Need to fix your laptop or buy Coachella tickets? Float wants to offer you some tiny loans

If you asked a bank for a loan to buy Coachella tickets, they'd probably laugh and maybe take away your credit card.

But Float, a credit app, is launching a new service just for needs like that.

"We want to get you to your next paycheck," said CEO Max Klein.

The iOS app lets users apply for personalized lines of credit from $50 to $1,000. Applicants can connect Float to their accounts to be protected from overdraft fees, or use the line of credit to pay for unexpected purchases.

Applying for credit through Float won't hurt your credit score, because it doesn't base its credit decision on the traditional FICO credit score. Instead, the app's algorithm uses machine learning to analyze bank transaction data and public records to predict credit risk. In practice, Float looks at how you make money, how you spend money and if you've borrowed money in the past.  Read more...

Like most of us, Karlie Kloss loves Beyoncé, which means she also loves Destiny's Child. But in all the Fruitopia-fueled haze of the '90s, she failed to recognize one thing about the iconic girl group: they are not responsible for the TLC song "Waterfalls."

Kloss accidentally revealed her misconception in a Q&A for U.K. magazine Love. After asserting that she'd been a Bey fan since Destiny's Child in 2003 and that she was inspired by her "swag ... confidence, smile and kindness" (all admirable traits), Kloss wrote, "She is the soundtrack to my LIFE! People are terrible at remembering where they read news online

People are reading news online, but they don't always remember where the news came from — unless it was on Facebook.

Digital news readers between 18 and 29 years old remembered what news organization the stories they read came from 47 percent of the time. Thirty- to 49-year-olds remembered where their news came from more often — 57 percent of the time. Both groups — and other age demographics — read news online at about the same rate.

That's not even compared to how much print news consumers remember about the stories they read or their sources. A 2014 study from the University of Houston found that print readers retained a lot more of what they read. Print readers could recall 4.24 stories compared to the 3.35 stories digital readers remembered after 20 minutes of catching up on the news.  Read more...

Scottish comedian pens hilarious yet brutal piece about Trump

Ferocious blizzard smacks New York, but it'll be over sooner than you think

New Yorkers woke up to near-blizzard conditions as wind-driven snow reduced visibility, made streets nearly impassible and morning commutes a challenge at best.

By the evening commute, however, it's likely that the storm will be winding down, if not completely over, from the city to points west and north of town. Even in the Boston area, where the storm is starting later, snowfall is likely to come to an end before midnight tonight.

It's rare for a snowstorm to hit so intensely, dumping up to a foot or more of snow, yet only last about 6 to 8 hours, and is a testament to the impressive atmospheric dynamics involved with this particular weather system. New York's Central Park picked up 6 inches of snow in just three hours on Thursday morning, with 9 inches falling in the same period of time at nearby La Guardia Airport. Read more...

'Stranger Things' is clearly the inspiration for this horror game

I like how this trailer for Stories Untold, a four-part horror game anthology releasing on Feb. 27, doesn't even try to hide its nod to Stranger Things. The music, the retro technology, the red lettered logo — if you've seen the Netflix series, there's no escaping the similarity.

Cool!

The anthology appears to be an extension of The House Abandon. The earlier game — which was created by Stories Untold developer No Code — is a text adventure that plays out on an in-game CRT monitor in a creepy, old house (it, too, evoked Stranger Things in a trailer).

The anthology features a remastered version of The House Abandon plus three additional horror experiences. Check it out on Steam or GOG (no console release for this one, sadly). Read more...

Bryan Cranston almost smacked Tony Parker's butt to get $100 from M. Night Shyamalan

Betting on sports is a fun way to make a game a little more interesting. Except...people usually just bet on the outcome of the game.

Bryan Cranston, whom we all loved to hate as Breaking Bad's Walter White, was sitting court side at last night's matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers and came very close to smacking Tony Parker on the behind in order to win a $100 bet with Split director M. Night Shyamalan.

@MNightShyamalan bet me a hundy I wouldn't slap Tony Parker's ass. Sucker! https://t.co/QwzxZGn61u via @YouTube

Future iPhones and iPads could have stretchy screens

What will iPhones five or 10 years from now look like? While the iPhone is inching closer toward becoming just a single pane of glass, the future could look very different.

A patent filed last year and made public this week, unearthed by AppleInsider, suggests Apple is potentially interested in making electronic devices with flexible displays that could stretch.

The patent describes solutions for a "flexible input-output device" that may be "formed from an elastomeric substrate layer" (stretchy material).

Moreover, sensors such as "touch sensors, force sensors, temperature sensors, accelerometers, and other sensors, and vibrators or other devices for providing haptic feedback" could be integrated into the stretchable screen, removing the need for top bezels of any kind to house them. Read more...

About midway through his new book Universal Harvester, John Darnielle, lead singer of indie band The Mountain Goats and author of the critically acclaimed novel Wolf In White Van, drops a little nugget of wisdom: "Everybody leaves a little something behind."

This may seem simple and mundane, but it is this core truth that animates Darnielle's haunting and unforgettable new novel.

Universal Harvester follows Jeremy, a video store clerk in Nevada, Iowa, who notices that curious, shocking and sometimes violent scenes are being recorded on top of the store's tapes. When Jeremy and a few other employees at the store begin to investigate the tapes, they realize that the scenes were recorded just outside of their town, leading them down a dark and disturbing mystery that was hiding right in front of them all along. Verizon's big advantage of T-Mobile is just about gone

The days of Verizon as the unequivocal top mobile network are over.

The wireless carrier once known its superior wireless network can't really claim that advantage anymore. According to the 2017 State of Mobile Networks report from OpenSignal, which tracks the speed and availability of the United States' mobile carriers, T-Mobile is now just as good as Verizon.

"In no report has the clash between the two operators been so heated. Either Verizon or T-Mobile won or shared every single national award in our report," the report said.

Face it, Super Liking on Tinder is for losers

Swiping right on Tinder might be the fastest way to get yourself a date in this day and age. But if you dare to swipe up for a Super Like, you could be fast-tracking yourself to eternal singledom.

You can "Super Like" people you are ~SUPER~ into to encourage them to swipe right on you. While the idea sounds flattering in theory, the reality of being Super Liked can be deeply off-putting for some users.

When the Super Like function first launched in September 2015, I thought it sounded kinda cool. Who knows, maybe I'd be Super Liked by someone that I also happened to like, and it'd be a lovely ego boost? Read more...

Always cold? Here's how to make it replace your personality

When it's freezing outside and your toes are steadily going numb, it can be hard to concentrate on anything but how cold you are.

So don't!

Instead, make being cold the only thing that identifies you by eradicating all the other facets of your personality. It will make expressing yourself much easier — which is good, because you have to save energy to retain heat.

Here's where to start.

When you enter a room, wiggle around and say, "brr!"

Before anyone knows your first name, last name or reason for being in the room, they should know you are feeling a little cold. Read more...

Obama's official White House photographer is Insta-trolling Trump

The former chief photographer for Barack Obama in the White House is throwing some serious shade at President Trump on Instagram, according to many of his followers.

As many eagle-eyed people noticed and mentioned in the comments, photographer Pete Souza, who has gathered 824,000 followers since he created the account on Jan. 21, might have set up one of the biggest TTs (#ThrowbackThrusday) in the history of the social network.

The timing of some of his posts, which mainly consist of intimate peeks at the former president's life in the White House, is coincidental to say the least. As President Donald Trump signs executive orders and outlines policy, Souza drops perfectly timed images of Obama's time in office.  Read more...

Sapio, the dating app that wants to help smart people hook up

Think you're smarter than your average bear? A new dating app wants to help you find fellow intellectuals to love.

Sapio bills itself as a go-to community for people who are drawn to other smart people. Among other things, the free app allows users to define their orientation as sapiosexual, which is someone who finds intelligence attractive. Though it sounds a little... clinical? And presumably if you've selected this particular app, you've already identified yourself as at least sapio-curious.

Image: sapio

Kristin Tynski, one of the app's cofounders, told the Huffington Post that being a sapiosexual isn't just about your IQ, it's about bonding over shared interests and having meaningful conversation. “For many, defining oneself as sapiosexual has become statement against the current status quo of hookup culture and superficiality, where looks are prized above all else,” Tynski said. Normal suburban house becomes stage for intense moose battle

You may think of moose as cute animals, especially with such a silly name as 'moose.'

But moose are actually very dangerous animals when provoked. They are powerful, strong and they have a tendency to engage each other in epic brawls. Most of the time they fight over territory or females. However, they are also known to become ornery when tired, hungry or getting harassed according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

We don't know exactly what the reason is behind this particular moose fight, but it's fascinating and also a bit scary to watch. Two wild animals are just dueling in the driveway of a suburban home. This world is a crazy place. Read more...

There's a new Hyperloop company, and its leader is a familiar face

You can't keep a good Hyperloop visionary down.

Just a few months after settling a particularity acrimonious lawsuit with the company he co-founded, Hyperloop One, Brogan BamBrogan launched on Thursday a brand-new Hyperloop company, Arrivo.

Companies like Arrivo (which means "Arrival" in Italian) keep cropping up because no one actually owns the Hyperloop idea. The sub-supersonic, tube-based, next-gen transportation concept was cooked up by Tesla and SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk, who produced a lengthy white paper on the idea in 2013. Essentially, he open-sourced it so other people could build a ground-based transportation system that would get you from Los Angeles to San Francisco in minutes instead of hours. Read more...

'For Honor' beta is free all weekend and it's totally worth checking out

For Honor isn't like other games.

You don't have to take my word for it. Ubisoft is hosting an open beta for the game on all platforms — PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One — from Feb. 9-12. It's not the full game, but it's enough to illustrate the kind of experience to expect from this Feb. 14 release.

I'm just here to tell you: it's good stuff. Like, really good. We spent about 40 minutes messing around with the recent closed beta during an episode of #ButtonMash and came away impressed.

For Honor looks a little bit like a stripped down Warriors game — Mashable's Ben Fullon described it as a "1v1 Dynasty Warriors" — with its focus on melee combat across sprawling battlefields. But that "1v1" bit in Ben's description is critical; For Honor also embraces the spirit of fighting games with its deceptively deep duel swordplay. Read more...
