Elon Musk throws subtle shade at Trump over travel ban
Elon Musk took a subtle swipe at Donald Trump on Twitter after the president criticized the U.S. justice system. On Sunday, the CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX praised America's judicial arm — a day after Trump tweeted angrily about a federal judge's decision to block a travel ban on citizens of seven mainly Muslim countries. Musk, who sits on Trump's economic advisory council, has attempted to position himself as a moderate voice in the president's ear — someone who can help influence the White House without condoning its most controversial actions. The Super Bowl isn't just the height of sport, it's also the height of branding. Now, it looks like the pope is getting in on the action. The pontiff stars in a 50-second spot that will be shown to tens of thousands of fans in Houston's NRG Stadium early in the game. Instead of shilling terrible food or a fizzy beverage, His Holiness details how the marquee event for a league plagued by traumatic brain injuries and domestic violence is a nice metaphor for a peaceful world. The pope also talked — unironically — about how nice sports are because it helps us learn to follow the rules, which we can only assume is a subtle troll of the notorious spy-gating, ball-deflating New England Patriots. I understand alternate facts. Sometimes my iPhone’s battery meter delivers them. Fact: I have a 18-month-old Apple iPhone 6. I keep it in god shape, never dropping it, subjecting it to extreme temperatures, or dunking it in bodies of water. I charge it regularly. Fact: On a recent weekday afternoon, I picked up my iPhone, which had been sitting on my desk untouched for hours, and noticed it was reporting just 18% battery life. It was officially in the red. I quickly plugged it into a charger and, a moment later, the rating was 43%. If you — like many Americans — only get your news from President Donald Trump's Twitter feed, you'll come to believe that all Syrian refugees are terrorists. A new video released by UNICEF challenges that obscene assertion. In it, an 80-year-old man discusses his traumatizing experience as a child refugee escaping Nazi Germany. A Syrian boy, himself a refugee, then recounts his own story. Their stories end with the same heartbreaking quote. "I am alive. I am one of the lucky ones." Because, yes, space geeks love sports, too, astronauts on the International Space Station decided to join in the Super Bowl fun and set up what they're calling "the longest Hail Mary pass ever." One of the ISS crew members threw a pass the length of the interior cabin with perfect spin, which the crew humorously claimed traveled 564,664 yards. Of course, that's only true if you take into account that the ball was "technically" traveling 8,800 yards per second as the ISS orbited the Earth at 17,500 miles per hour. Naturally, a least one science geek weighed in on the YouTube comments to admonish NASA for playing loose with stats: "You shouldn't really mix relevant relativity (velocity of the thrown football relative to ISS)." Internet pretty sure Justin Bieber channeled the old dude from those Six Flags ads
T-Mobile's Super Bowl 2017 ad starring Justin Bieber has the internet hopping a Vengabus back to 2004. Here's the Singaporean indoor skydiver just casually flipping and turning like it's no big deal: Kyra beat out 10 other competitors to win gold in the solo freestyle category. She choreographed her routine herself, with the help of her mum. "My routine style is kind of feminine, so I do lots of flips and spins, but I also like to mix it together with a long of strong and technical moves," the 14-year-old told Mashable. Read more... Julian Edelman's clutch, jaw-dropping catch was the real MVP of Super Bowl LI
Tom Brady was named Super Bowl MVP on Sunday night after racking up 466 passing yards while leading the New England Patriots to a historic comeback win over the Atlanta Falcons. But let's take a moment to recognize the game's real MVP, a jaw-dropping catch by Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman, one that blew up the internet and instantly goes down among the greatest in NFL history. New England had the ball while down eight points in the fourth quarter — having already clawed back from deficits of 21-0 and 28-3 — when Brady made what can only be described as a bad throw. Uber hires veteran NASA engineer to develop flying cars
In 2010, an advanced aircraft engineer at NASA’s Langley Research Center named Mark Moore published a white paper outlining the feasibility of electric aircrafts that could take off and land like helicopters but were smaller and quieter. The vehicles would be capable of providing a speedy alternative to the dreary morning commute. Moore’s research into so-called VTOL—short for vertical takeoff and landing, or more colloquially, flying cars—inspired at least one billionaire technologist. A 30-second ad during the Super Bowl is the holy grail of advertising. It's extremely expensive — about $5 million — but it does get tens of millions of viewers, so you better make that time count. Bob Ross — the television host/painter/unexpected Netflix star — once said, "We don't make mistakes; we have happy accidents." For Chris Nervegna, a 22-year-old from South River, New Jersey, his now-viral Ross-themed birthday party came together as his own kind of happy accident. "Jokingly, we threw the idea of having a Bob Ross and Chill kinda party," Nervegna wrote via email. "I don’t think anyone thought we were being serious. But a few hours before the party, a few friends and I bought a bunch of paint supplies at the local art store just in case. Turned out everyone was SUPER excited about it and turned out to be an absolute success by accident." Read more... In the Trump era, even a beer commercial can have political consequences, intentional or not, and spark boycotts such as the one facing the makers of Budweiser after their pro-immigrant Super Bowl ad. Specifically, people are mad at Anheuser-Busch for creating and airing an ad that depicts the path taken by Adolphus Busch, the German-born co-founder of the mega-brewery, upon his immigration to the United States in the early 1850s. The ad, which aired during the Super Bowl but debuted on YouTube on Jan. 31, depicts the cold welcome Busch received upon his arrival to the U.S., with one man growling at the young Busch, "You're not welcome here." An unexpected meteor is sure to surprise anyone lucky enough to catch a glimpse. Catching it on camera is a whole separate shock. In what may be the most perfectly timed Snapchat of all time, Canfora pushed the record button just as the meteor came into frame. "What the fuck?" Canfora says as the meteor zooms across the sky, followed by the sudden realization that she caught it all on video. "What the fuck I caught that. What the fuck?" she says. A perfect reaction to a perfectly WTF scenario. Read more... An extraordinarily powerful storm system is spinning across the North Atlantic Ocean, just southeast of Greenland. Together with long-term climate change and other transitory weather systems, it is setting the stage for a dramatic and unusual warmup at the North Pole this week. For the third time this winter, such a storm is likely to vault unusually warm air toward the pole, potentially bringing temperatures across the sunless Arctic to near the melting point for a brief period late this week. The storm, an unnamed beast that looks like it came straight from meteorological central casting, exploded in intensity on Sunday. The air pressure at the center of the storm bottomed out at an astonishing 932 millibars, or 27.52 inches of mercury on a home barometer. In general, the lower the pressure, the stronger the storm, and a reading this low indicates that the storm means business. Read more... Kanye West has finally seen what happens when one man has all the power, and he doesn't like it. West has deleted the tweets he posted about Donald Trump following West's meeting with the then-president elect in December. But apparently Yeezy isn't impressed by what Trump's done since then, particularly the immigration ban, according to TMZ. West is about connectivity, after all. West's only tweets from 2017 that remain shout out new albums from Big Sean and Migos. Keeping up with Kim Kardashian West is often the best way to know what's going on with her husband. Following the executive order, she tweeted a very matter-of-fact look at Americans' likelihood of actually being killed by Islamic jihadist immigrants, which is quite small. Read more...
