Sean Spicer owns the domain RateTheReporter.com

Press Secretary Sean Spicer is having a bad week on the internet.

First, the news hit about Spicer's public Venmo account, then Mashable reported that Spicer WHOIS page reveals a whole bunch of public data about him.

Using that data we discovered that Spicer registered the domain RateTheReporter.com in February of 2015, using his personal Yahoo address.

At the time the site was registered, Spicer was the chief strategist and communications director for the Republican National Committee.

Although the site is empty, it sounds like a slew of other premiere ratings site out there on the net, like RateMyProfessor.com.  Read more...

MIT-designed Chrome extension fixes your Twitter filter bubble

It's no secret that our social media feeds are pretty biased toward our own political leanings. And while we've seen a handful of Chrome extensions and other tools that address this issue on Facebook, we haven't yet seen as many tools made for Twitter. Until now.

Researchers at MIT have created a new Chrome extension that changes your Twitter feed to that of someone with different political views.

Called FlipFeed, the extension infers your political beliefs based on your own feed and then shows you the feed of someone with opposing views.  Read more...

Sad Atlanta Falcons fan buries team gear as a warning for the future

Time capsules are a nice idea.

The notion that one day some future generation of human (or alien) will unearth something from our current time and learn a bit about us is pleasing. It makes us feel important, like something worth remembering.

However, for one Atlanta Falcons fan, there are definitely things worth forgettingSuper Bowl LI is one of those things.

That fan was so distraught over the Falcons' drubbing at the hands of the New England Patriots that he decided it was time to fold up his Falcons shirt and bury it deep in the ground. With it, he wrote a note addressed to the people of the future. Read more...

Belgian company offers to make its employees cyborgs with microchip implants

In the latest move toward a brave new world, a European company has offered its employees a chance at becoming cyborgs.

NewFusion, a Belgian digital marketing and tech firm, recently took steps to make biohacking a company-wide initiative, Sputnik reports. Instead of old-school ID badges, NewFusion's workers can opt for a microchip implant in their hands to gain access to the company's HQ and computer systems.

We'll say that again: Employees can get physical chips surgically implanted into their flesh to access their building and computers.

This TV company was spying on you until it was called out

Electronics company Vizio doesn't want its customers to believe it ran a giant spying operation, but the company's surrender to a recent lawsuit suggests otherwise.

Vizio agreed to pay $2.2 million on Monday to settle a lawsuit brought against them by the New Jersey government and the Federal Trade Commission. In doing so, they agreed to stop fighting the charge that the company "installed software on its TVs to collect viewing data on 11 million consumer TVs without consumers’ knowledge or consent."

Vizio and "an affiliated company" built their smart TVs to spy on whatever their customers were watching, starting in Febuary, 2014, according to the complaint filed. They did this with a pixel-reading technology that matched pixels on customer TVs to pixels of whatever show was in their database — live shows, shows recorded for future watching, movies, whatever.  Read more...

The science behind finding your perfect match

In 2017, finding a life partner — one who will stand by you through thick and thin, who shares your core beliefs and whose side-of-the-bed preference is complementary to your own — seems to be more about "love at first swipe" than "love at first sight." With the rise of apps and online dating services, there are more technologically advanced options than ever before for finding that special someone.

Love is increasingly a game of numbers in our data-driven world. According to a recent study by eHarmony Australia, over two-thirds of Aussie singles have a "suite" of people with whom they're romantically involved to some degree ("talking to," dating or just keeping on the back burner). In fact, the average single Aussie has 6.9 people they're currently involved with in some kind of romantic capacity.    Read more...

You hate data journalism because you're reading it wrong

On Sunday night, the Patriots completed the most improbable comeback in Super Bowl history.

Which is to say: It wasn't impossible. Yes, a few pundits predicted the Patriots were done, but they're pundits. People who were crunching the numbers never ruled the Patriots out—even though, to many, it seemed like they did.

A look at the dramatic turn in win probability in the Patriots' Super Bowl winpic.twitter.com/tfBpu81zLm

Sweet judge forgives a super dumb traffic violation

Judge Frank Caprio has heard every excuse in the book from law violators on his local show "Caught in Providence," but because he has a giant heart, he sometimes lets them off the hook.

In this video, Judge Caprio makes the difficult executive decision to let this dangerous, rule-breaking criminal off the hook for her ill-timed parking ticket.

Even though we're cursing the officer who issued this ticket in the first place, we're loving this judge for being such a sweetie.

Put your undies back on. New data reveals sexting isn't so great after all.

Have you been fooling yourself into thinking that titillating sext you sent to your crush the other day was private? Think again.

SKYN Condoms just released their annual Millennial Sex Survey, and while there are some fun findings in there — masturbation is on the rise! New York is the most sexually active city — they uncovered a pretty disturbing trend: 30 percent of people admitted they’d shared a sexual photo without getting permission from the person in the pic. One in three people is a lot!

This massive violation of individual privacy has big implications. According to SKYN’s data, 48 percent of millennials (people ages 18 to 34) are sexting at least once a week. So that’s a lot of very revealing flirtation floating through the ether and offers plenty of opportunities for bad behavior. Even those who use Snapchat or other disappearing apps aren’t immune to having their most intimate moments go viral. Read more...

Grandpa and baby's matching T-shirts will inspire you to practice your math skills

Unfortunately, only babies are allowed to celebrate their birthdays every month. But that doesn't mean us olds can't keep track of how many months we've been alive, too.

Take this baby and his grandpa, for example. When the tiny human sported a celebratory "9 months" T-shirt earlier this week, Grandpa also made a "684 months" version for himself.

Then, thanks to the baby's dad, Redditor ModXMV, they ended up on the internet.

In case you don't want to do math (understandable), Grandpa is 57 years old. Looking good, dude! Read more...

'Pokémon Go' craze leads to new permit requirements for ARGs

The explosive popularity of Pokémon Go got people off their asses in huge numbers, but the increased foot traffic — and mess — that came with them has opened the door to a legal kerfuffle in Milwaukee, Wis.

The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors approved an ordinance on Feb. 2 that places permit requirements on alternate reality games in public spaces. So if Niantic wants to have active PokeStops and Gyms in a Milwaukee park, for example, it would need to seek approval from the local government.

The issue first sprung up in July 2016, when Pokémon Go launched. Larger-than-normal crowds turned up to chase Pokémon at Milwaukee's 138-acre Lake Park, and the resulting costs of enforcement and clean-up — which were higher than normal — fell to taxpayers. Read more...

How to order a pizza with Amazon Alexa or Google Home

What a time to be alive!

Ordering pizza used to be such an arduous chore. Think about it: You had to pick up a phone, punch in the pizzeria's number, wait for the call to dial through, and then talk to a human being to place your order.

Worse, sometimes you'd have to leave your house (maybe even in the snow or rain) and pick up the pizza by yourself. UghWalking!

In 2017, getting pizza delivered to your door requires far less human interaction. It's only a short, simple voice command away if you automate the process with the Amazon Echo or Google Home. The only human you need to deal with is the person making the delivery, and even then, you can just quietly shove a tip in their hand, and never make eye contact. Read more...

Google figured out how to turn pixelated images into high-res ones

You see it all the time in movies and TV shows: A security camera records footage of an intruder, but the image is too blurry or pixelated to make out who it is.

Some nerdy-looking "hacker" then clacks at his keyboard and — boom — seconds later, pixelated image turns into a crisp one revealing the person's face in glorious detail.

"Oh, come on!" we all say while rolling our eyes. Well, you might have to break that habit because Google has figured out a way to turn movie magic into reality (sort of).

According to ArsTechnica, researchers at Google's deep learning research project, Google Brain, have created software that attempts to "sharpen" images made up of 8 x 8 pixels.  Read more...

After 11 years, the feud between Chili's and 'The Office's Pam Beesly is now over

Forgiveness is a cherished virtue.

It's also something that Pam Beesly, former receptionist at Dunder Mifflin from our favorite show The Office, experienced today when restaurant chain Chili's officially forgave her for her uncouth behavior 11 years ago.

Fischer is alluding to a scene from Season 2 of The Office, when Pam becomes so drunk at Chili's that she falls out of a chair and is subsequently kicked out of the restaurant. This audio feedback vest makes music hum and VR come alive

The missing link for virtual reality that truly blows me away arrived late last year when I got my hands on the Oculus Touch controllers, which allow you to interact in VR with your hands. 'Shade' is officially in the dictionary, honey

The definition, in the context of "throwing shade," is "to express contempt or disrespect for someone publicly especially by subtle or indirect insults or criticisms."

The phrase "throwing shade" became popular in 2010 when an episode of RuPaul's Drag Race challenged the contestants to "read," or cleverly insult, each other. Consequently, most of the write-ups afterwards called it "throwing shade." Read more...

This powerful marriage equality ad just wants politicians to 'do their job'

When she started reading a letter from Coretta Scott King — the widow of Martin Luther King Jr. — about how Sessions was unqualified for a federal judgeship back in 1986, she was silenced by Republicans for impugning a fellow senator's character.

It was a rare move, one that outraged Democrats on social media — and silenced Warren for the rest of the debate over Sessions.  Read more...

Coal-fired electricity is at its lowest since officials started keeping track

President Donald Trump has vowed to restore the long-struggling U.S. coal sector. The only problem? America's power plants have already moved on.

Natural gas and renewable energy together produced half of U.S. electricity supplies in 2016, while coal made up just 30 percent — its smallest share since officials started keeping track 70 years ago.

Thanks to that shift, total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions plunged to a 25-year low last year, putting the nation on track to meet emissions reductions targets set by former President Barack Obama. Read more...

DARPA designed tech that can snag 1,100-pound drones right out of the air

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is working on a way to launch drones into flight and then snag them right out of the air with a system that can be loaded onto a truck or ship.

The agency recently released test footage of the next-gen drone tech, currently being developed under the callsign SideArm. It's designed to give the military the ability to manage the flight of large unmanned aerial systems (UASs, aka drones) from just about anywhere.

Using the current launch systems, putting these heavy-duty drones in the air requires the runway of a 90,000-ton aircraft carrier, along with a net to catch the aircraft when their flights come to an end. That setup obviously presents some logistical issues when there are no oceans around, so SideArm looks to make the launch pads more mobile.  Read more...

The Information reports that Netease, China's second-largest games firm, has approached Google to form a joint venture, in order to launch the Play Store in the world's largest smartphone market.

Elon Musk: Tesla Model 3 won't come with a 100 kWh battery

If you wondered just how big a battery will Tesla pack into its upcoming Model 3 electric car, we've got some bad news for you: It won't have a 100 kWh capacity like some Model S and Model X models.

Elon Musk confirmed that in a reply on Twitter on Tuesday, explaining that the Model 3's wheelbase just can't fit such a big battery.

@jovanik21 @Veidit No, will be lower. Wheelbase can't fit 100.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 7, 2017

Musk did not say exactly how big a battery the Model 3 will have. The Model S is available with either a 60, 75, 90 or a 100 kWh battery, so it's likely the Model 3 with come with one of the lower three options. Pornhub reveals that Super Bowl halftime porn is a thing

Websites usually don't like to talk about huge dips in their traffic, but that's exactly what Pornhub did, revealing exactly how much it traffic suffered during the Super Bowl.

According to a blog post (SFW link) Monday, U.S. traffic on the porn site dropped by 27% compared to usual levels shortly after the game began Sunday. It appears to have recovered slightly during halftime, but it stayed low until the end of the game, when it jumped to 9% more than usual, presumably because some football fans wanted to celebrate victory — or drown their sorrows — with a bit of X-rated action.

Here's what a 5,000 year old beer recipe tastes like

Did you know that the Chinese brewed beer about 5,000 years ago?

A group of researchers at Stanford were able to piece together the ancient recipe by analysing a yellowish residue found in 5,000-year-old Chinese clay funnels.

With that recipe, a group of students managed to do a homebrew of the uniquely Chinese beer, thanks to ingredients native to Asia.

The recipe calls for several components including barley, broomcorn millets, as well as Job's tears, also known as Chinese pearl barley.

Professor Liu Li, who was part of the team that unearthed the recipe, said that it was surprising to find barley in the recipe, as the earliest evidence of barley seeds in China date back only 4,000 years ago.  Read more...

Google guy builds bot that earns money from Trump tweets

Facebook's investment in the developing world is paying off.

More than 200 million people now use FB Lite every month, the company announced Wednesday. That's up from 100 million last March

Facebook Lite, or FB Lite, is a standalone Android app made for lower end phones and optimized for users with limited internet access.

The social network announced it will expand Facebook Lite's availability to more countries, including South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Italy and Israel, making the app available in more than 100 countries. The company has added more features from the core Facebook app, including the ability to like, comment and share posts. The app will also see performance improvements. Read more...

Google missed its big chance to stomp all over the Apple Watch

There are two kinds of people: Those who are fine with a smartwatch being a "companion" device for their phones and those who want it to replace their phones, at least in some respects.

I always thought I would fall into the latter group — because, honestly, who would rather carry around a giant phablet instead of a do-it-all smartwatch? — but after wearing LG's Watch Sport for about a week, I realized I don't actually need LTE in my smartwatch, and you probably don't either.

The $349 LG Watch Sport goes on sale Feb. 10 and is one of two flagship smartwatches Google is launching with Android Wear 2.0. The other is the smaller and cheaper ($249) LG Watch Style.  Read more...

With Android Wear 2.0, Google targets the Apple Watch by imitating it

Android Wear's second coming is finally here

After months of delays and more than a few leaks, Google is finally launching  Android Wear 2.0 with two new watches from LG: the LG Watch Style and the LG Watch Sport, both of which go on sale Friday. The update, which will roll out to more watches later this month, is a complete redesign of Google's smartwatch platform, bringing the Google Assistant and standalone apps to your wrist.

At first glance, what's most noticeable about the new Android Wear is the darker color scheme. Like we saw with the developer previews, the card interface of previous versions is (thankfully) gone and everything, including notifications, is instead set against a dark background.  Read more...

Arnold Schwarzenegger shows off his emotions, beard in new 'Aftermath' trailer

He came back. And he has a beard.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is making his return to the big screen in Aftermath, the story of a man who lost his wife and daughter due to a terrible plane crash caused by negligence. The movie, which is inspired by true events, has Schwarzenegger hunting down the person who caused the crash with his trademark stoic expression and snarls.

It's a more emotional movie than we're use to seeing Schwarzenegger in but the final showdown seems to be worth a few tears.

Aftermath will be in theaters on April 7.

'Counter-Strike' player gets 1,000-year ban for sexually harassing an alleged minor

After Counter-Strike players compiled and posted evidence that a fellow player was sexually harassing an alleged minor, competitive Counter-Strike community and league organizer ESEA hit him with an unprecedented ban to last 1,000 years.

25-year-old Counter-Strike player Reece "Bloominator" Bloom was banned from ESEA until June 5, 3016 after community members posted photos of conversations he had with an alleged 15-year-old girl on Reddit. It's 73 degrees in the Mid-Atlantic today. Tomorrow it will snow.

If you live in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, get ready for an acute case of weather whiplash.

On Wednesday in Washington, D.C., a 117-year-old temperature record was broken as temperatures surged past 70 degrees, which is nearly unheard of for early February. This came on the heels of a record warm Tuesday.

The D.C. warmup up comes courtesy of a push of mild air north ahead of an advancing cold front.

And that cold front will be a doozy.

On Thursday, a low pressure area will form along the front and rapidly intensify, sending temperatures crashing and snow flying in D.C. and many other areas experiencing mild, sunny weather today. Read more...

'Overwatch' hero Doomfist may be coming soon, evidence suggests

An intrepid Overwatch investigator uncovered evidence on the game's public test region that may point to a new, upcoming Overwatch hero: Doomfist.

Redditor Venxa posted today that Overwatch's latest PTR update includes a model of the payload on the map Numbani where its glass case has been shattered. That payload, which currently exists in the game, carries Doomfist's gauntlet, but the broken glass suggests it's possible that the gauntlet will be stolen in an upcoming game update.

Here is the current version of the payload carrying Doomfist's gauntlet:

When 44 men tried to silence Elizabeth Warren, she took her voice to Facebook Live

If you were one of the thousands of panicked politics dorks watching C-SPAN 2 last night, you witnessed something remarkable: Sen. Mitch McConnell, along with 48 other Republican senators, voting to temporarily but formally silence Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

It was a spectacularly theatrical — and of course, devastatingly sad moment — in our recent traumatic political history. McConnell invoked an arcane senate rule to silence Warren, at the precise time she was reading a letter from civil rights hero Coretta Scott King. And it wasn't just the actions of one senator either — 48 senators, 44 of whom are male, joined along with him.    Read more...

'Legion' creator wants the show to prove itself before you call it an X-Men series

Keep this in mind when you tune into Legion: series creator Noah Hawley isn’t just messing with the head of the mentally unstable — but very psychically powerful — mutant David Haller, he’s also messing with yours a little bit.

Hawley, of course, is the mastermind behind FX’s event series Fargo, which managed to retain the crime-noir-but-quirky sensibility of the beloved Coen brothers film, struck out on a daring path all its own, then somehow circled back in cleverly conceived plot twists that evoked the original 1996 movie.

Legion is his latest effort for the critically-beloved cable network; an equally unlikely set-up that has Hawley taking on a cult-favorite character (who in the comics also happens to be the son of Charles Xavier) from an obscure ‘80s-era X-Men spinoff title, who suffers from an array of severe psychiatric disorders while also possessed of some of the most intense telekinetic and telepathic abilities in the X-Men universe.  Read more...

This gaming smartwatch has Atari classics built right in

Since we now have smartphones with us at all times, we can carry our favorite video games in our pockets. If you're a really dedicated gamer, though, you'll want to be wearing the classics right on your wrist.

You can do exactly that with the Gameband, a smartwatch gaming platform that comes with 20 preloaded Atari classics like Pong, Breakout and Asteroids ready to play. A second version of the watch will have an exclusive mini-game version of the popular indie game Terraria built-in.

The wearable, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the Apple Watch, has a 1.63-inch touch AMOLED display, along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The Atari staples have been rewritten and optimized for the smaller display, so the wrist-based gaming is more intuitive than just porting the home console versions of the games. Read more...

Your dates are definitely judging you for your crappy old phone

We all love our phones. But if you're trying to find an actual person to love, your ancient Android or scratched up iPhone could be hurting your chances.

New survey data shows that your device of choice and how you use it can speak volumes about you. Though you may not have to buy a new phone just yet. It turns out impressing a date might be as simple as putting yours away and having an IRL conversation with them.

This damning data for phone slobs comes from Match’s latest Singles in America survey. It found that single people who have older model phones are 56 percent less likely to get a date in the course of a year. Women, in particular, mind an outdated device. They were 92 percent more likely to judge you for having one. Read more...

Despite it becoming easier and easier for Americans to legally consume cannabis, thousands of pounds of of weed still comes across the border.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Texas discovered 3,947 pounds of "alleged marijuana" inside a shipment of key limes. Although the seizure occurred on Jan. 30, the CBP just released information about the incident Tuesday.

According to the release, CBP officers at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility found the marijuana while inspecting a tractor trailer truck. Trump's 'Easy D' tweet took the internet straight to penis jokes

"Easy D" could mean many things to people. And few of them are probably what the President actually wants.

We know because we took 15 seconds to loudly express confusion, disbelief and wonder over Donald Trump's midday tweet on Wednesday.

To hunt in the dark, these fish bring their own 'flashlights'

If you're hunting for food on a pitch-black night, it helps to bring a flashlight.

That's exactly how reef-dwelling Anomalops katoptron fish find and gobble up their planktonic prey, German scientists found.

Splitfin flashlight fish have bean-shaped organs beneath their eyes that host light-producing bacteria. The fish can turn this light on and off by blinking, sending Morse code-like signals into the deep abyss.

While many other ocean creatures are bioluminescent, relatively little is known about reason for this particular fish's blinking patterns.  Read more...

Leak suggests Samsung is going after the Surface Pro with an impressive tablet PC

Samsung's TabPro S did a good job modeling itself off the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and iPad Pro, but it was no Surface Pro killer.

With no Surface Pro 5 available (yet), Samsung might get its chance to leap ahead of the competition, assuming leaked product details from The Leaker turn out to be the real deal.

Samsung's reportedly planning to announce a successor to the TabPro S in a few weeks at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the report claims.

The so-called Windows 10-powered TabPro S2 looks like it'll keep the design aesthetic of the TabPro S, meaning it'll be thin and light, but overhaul the internals. And from the looks of it, some models will run Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro, and some will have 4G LTE: Read more...

HoloLens app mixes AR and VR to put a room on the top of Mt. Fuji

We hear many descriptions of future applications around mixed reality — the intersection of augmented reality and virtual reality — but we don't see much in the way of real demonstrations of the technology.

Now a new HoloLens experiment from a Japan-based developer shows us what one version of mixed reality actually looks like.

Recorded from the HoloLens' camera, we see a portal to an outside environment floating in the middle of a room, but instead of representing a static 3D element, the HoloLens wearer is able to step through that portal and hover high above Japan's Mt. Fuji.  Read more...

How computer hacking is becoming Russia’s weapon of choice

In his 2007 address to the Annual Security Conference in Munich, Vladimir Putin threw down a gauntlet to the West. Attacking what he called "illegal" unilateral military action by the US, he hinted that Russia would build its capability in information warfare to counter American and NATO expansion.

In the same year, a Russian policy doctrine noted that as the world became more digitally connected, the well-being of nation states would become dependent on data and and its rapid movement. Back then, information warfare was just a sideshow, and Putin’s emphasis was on more traditional weapon systems. But things have changed. In the decade since, Russia has rapidly developed its information warfare capability and deployed it in conflicts in Estonia, Georgia, and Ukraine. Read more...
