Robotic finger monkeys are cute and not weird at all

We're now so desperate for distraction and companionship that some of us will even wear tiny robo-monkeys on our fingers.

At least WowWee's Fingerlings Baby Monkey Toys, unveiled this week at New York Toy Fair, are adorable.

As the name implies, these palm-sized monkeys slip onto your finger like a giant, ridiculous ring. Fingerlings are motion and touch sensitive.

While most of the little battery-operated figure is fixed, the toy monkey's head turns and eyes open. That little bit of animation affords the monkey-bots an impressive amount of expression. WowWee told us that there are actually over 40-to-50 distinct animations and sound effects in Fingerlings. Read more...

Give a dollar to Peaches Monroee on GoFundMe for every time you've said 'on fleek'

If anyone deserves your GoFundMe contribution, it's Peaches Monroee.

The internet sensation — real name Kayla Lewis — coined the phrase "eyebrows on fleek." And even though the entire world has used it, Lewis hasn't received much credit.

That's why she launched a GoFundMe campaign, in the hopes that her linguistic contribution to the world might inspire some to help her start — fittingly — a cosmetics line.

"Everyone has used the phrase/word but I haven't received any money behind it or recognition," Lewis wrote on her GoFundMe page. "But for the most I want to start a cosmetic line and hair line; But I don't have any money to do so. Maybe this can help me with my wishes and dreams."  Read more...

Milo Yiannopoulos had a pretty rough Presidents Day

Presidents' Day was pretty bad for Milo Yiannopoulos.

The alt-right troll and Breitbart editor — banished from Twitter for inciting harassment against Leslie Jones, known for "provocative" attacks against trans people, feminism and "P.C. culture" — finally saw it all come crashing down.

Over the weekend, a video showing Yiannopoulos defending and advocating for sexual relationships between 13-year-olds and adults began to draw attention. Yiannopoulos has made his celebrity saying outlandish, offensive and purposely provocative things, but this was too much for many of his conservative sympathizers — and his biggest business partner. Uber CEO's memo on diversity could use a fact checker

Safe to say, the past 24 hours have Uber a little shook up. So shook, in fact, that it's been a little free and easy with statistics.

On Sunday, former-Uber engineer Susan J. Fowler's chilling account of workplace sexism and incompetent HR practices sent #DeleteUber trending yet again. VR may be hyped, but it'll take 'maybe a decade' to become mainstream

Apparently, VR hardware penetration in Australia will only reach 25.5 percent of households in 2021. Currently, about 2.3 percent of local households have some sort of VR available.

For the moment, high-tech, pricier VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are not dominant. For a brief moment, it was hell on earth, bolstering the increasing trend of heatwaves in Australia getting longer and more intense — an impact of climate change, according to Climate Council research.

India is getting an undersea bullet train

Drills for India's first bullet train has begun, according to reports. Construction of the 7-kilometres (about 4.3 miles) undersea rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmadabad in western India is slated to begin in 2018.

The drilling will help ascertain soil conditions under water. "Soil and rocks below the 70-meter-deep see are being tested as part of the geo-technical and geo-physical investigation undertaken for the entire project," a senior Railway Ministry official reportedly said.

Estimated to cost about Rs 97.6 billion ($14.5 billion), 80% of the project's funding will come by way of a loan from Japan that operates the Shinkansen bullet train between Tokyo and Osaka. India will replicate that system. The project cost includes possible cost escalation, interest during construction and import duties.  Read more...

Apple will launch 4 new iPads in March, report claims

Hold on to your seats, iPad fans: Apple might revamp its entire iPad lineup as soon as March 2017.

According to a report from Macotakara (link partially in Japanese), Apple will launch a quartet of iPad Pro machines, in four sizes: 12.9, 10.5, 9.7 and 7.9 inches.

The 12.9- and the 9.7-inch models will obviously be a continuation of the current iPad Pro lineup. The 10.5-inch tablet would be a new model, while the 7.9 would likely replace the iPad mini.

This contradicts some earlier reports which never mentioned the iPad mini. However, Macotakara reported once before — in October 2016 — that an "iPad mini Pro" will be coming. Note that in that report, the outlet claimed the all-new iPad Pro will have a 10.9-inch screen, not a 10.5-inch one.  Read more...

7 techniques for getting people to actually listen to what you're saying

At the heart of humanity is an intrinsic need to feel loved and cared for. This desire articulates itself in many different ways, but one of the most basic expressions of this need comes in the form of being heard and respected.

Listening to someone tells them that you care about what they have to say. But more than caring about the words they’re speaking, the listener is saying that they respect the individual enough to take time out of their busy schedule to consider what they deem important.

The problem is that we live in a world where people prefer hearing themselves talk over listening to others speak. Ultimately, this has created a hostile work environment where the powerful speak and everyone else listens, when a healthy business actually requires mutual conveyance and reception of ideas.  Read more...

You've likely never seen a pinball game like this.

Yoku's Island Express could probably benefit from a catchier title, but to see it is to believe. Gorgeous 'Belle' clip from 'Beauty and the Beast' leaves us wanting more

Bonjour! Welcome to Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast, where everything is live-action but also takes you back to your childhood and nothing hurts. A new clip from the film shows Emma Watson in full Belle glory, a "peculiar" girl in a simple town where no one can help but sing about it.

The full song will eventually introduce Gaston (Luke Evans) and Le Fou (Josh Gad), but this teaser is true to its name and cuts off with less than a minute of Belle and the townsfolk. We establish that Belle is a weirdo who likes to read (her material of choice may elicit more than one thinkpiece) and is kind but doesn't quite fit in. Read more...

Drake put in 'Work' for his birthday message to Rihanna

If only we could all be so lucky as to have Drake love us.

While performing a concert in Dublin Monday night, the Canadian rapper took time to shout out his love for Rihanna on her 29th birthday. Even though the pair spilt up months ago and Drake has recently been linked to Jennifer Lopez, there is obviously no love loss between the two exes.

A fan filmed the sweet moment in which Drake told the crowd it was someone's birthday that he "has a lot of love and respect for." And then, instead of singing the traditional "Happy Birthday" song, Drizzy decided to have the crowd sing Rihanna's part of their joint song "Work". Awwwww. Read more...

The Galaxy S8's fingerprint sensor sure looks like it's in a terrible spot

If all the leaks are to believed — and they all seem to paint the same picture — Samsung's next flagship phone, the Galaxy S8, will be hot fire.

The only thing that looks bad — and I must emphasize looks because I haven't held an S8 in my hand — is the placement of the fingerprint sensor.

The earliest rumors claimed Samsung would remove the home button and embed the fingerprint sensor underneath the screen, but a new leak from @evleaks suggests this won't be the case.

As shown in the image below, the S8's fingerprint sensor will be located to the left of the rear camera, like so: Read more...

Tattoo artist beautifully explains why women cover their mastectomy scars

Every mastectomy scar is unique.

The way it feels and looks depends on the woman who is wearing it, and what her body endured before and after the removal of one or both breasts.

Tattoo artist David Allen has spent the past few years learning these complex intricacies. In that time, he's adorned several dozen cancer survivors with chest tattoos of plants, flowers and branches to give their scars new meaning — and the women who bear them a newfound sense of beauty and agency.

"They’ve gone through a process where they’ve lost control," says Allen. "The beauty is that they're in control of this."  Read more...

Google's Tilt Brush VR art tool comes to the Oculus Rift

The Rift version of Google's VR app is not only completely compatible with the Oculus Touch controllers, but using Oculus Touch with Tilt Brush feels just as intuitive as when I've used the app on the HTC Vive. Unlocking the iPhone 8 could be as easy as looking at it

Just imagine unlocking your iPhone just by looking at it. According to the latest report from KGI analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, whose Apple predictions often turn out to be accurate, the next iPhone could be capable of that and more thanks to a "revolutionary" front-facing 3D camera system.

The KGI report, via 9to5Mac, claims the new camera system will merge 2D images taken by a standard front-facing camera with depth information from an infrared sensor to create 3D images. While turning the iPhone into a Nintendo 3DS isn't going to excite anyone, this might: the camera could be the engine that powers a visual login system similar to Windows Hello, where the iPhone unlocks the phone based on detailed facial or iris recognition. With such sentiments from well known females in recent history – celebrating the modern day woman – why is it that equal pay or equal opportunity is still an uphill battle in the ever-expanding tech sales world?

More to the point, how is it that in 2017, a worldwide technology provider, such as Oracle Corporation, is being sued by the federal government for allegedly paying white male sales employees more than their none-male or non-white colleagues?

Amazon's high-tech grocery store will let you grab a beer and walk out (almost)

Liquor laws will be the one thing keeping Amazon Go in the low-tech past.

The grocery store with no cashiers and no checkout lines will sell alcohol, requiring a human to check IDs, Recode reported on Tuesday.

The publication spotted an application for a liquor license in the window of Amazon's Seattle store, and Amazon confirmed that it plans to sell beer and wine. Amazon didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Mashable

“When we start offering beer and wine, there will be an associate checking identification,” an Amazon spokesperson told Recode

Amazon unveiled its plans for Amazon Go with a video showing its vision for grocery shopping in December. Customers enter the stores by checking in with their smartphones, which will track everything customers take from shelves and charge their Amazon accounts after they walk out.  Read more...

'Rogue Legacy' dev reveals its next game: 'Full Metal Furies'

Full Metal Furies immediately puts me in the mind of those old coin-op arcade games based on franchises like X-Men and The Simpsons. Or even more recent examples, like The Behemoth's wonderful brawler, Castle Crashers.

Well. This one comes from Cellar Door Games, the talented indie team behind Rogue Legacy. The earlier game twisted the "roguelike" genre with its unusual (and completely engaging) approach to long-term play: each "life" was the next generation in a family line, with different genetic traits tweaking how subsequent generations played.

Full Metal Furies' trailer describes the game as "not your typical brawler." The trailer is mostly focused on looking cool, but check out Cellar Door's website if you're curious to know more about how this game stands apart. Read more...

In the musical, as with Lego Batman, Batman (Joe Walker) learns to make friends, to love and appreciate Robin (Nick Lang) and Alfred (Chris Allen). The song starts around 2:52 and dare we say it's as infectious as "Friends Are Family"? Annoyed elephant makes tourists uncomfortable by chasing them for miles

Going on a safari affords you the chance to see amazing animals out in their natural habitat. It's thrilling, but there's also an underlying sense of nervousness. After all, these are wild animals and a great many of them can easily take a human out with the swat of a paw or a casual chomp.

These tourists on a safari ride through Kruger National Park in South Africa fully realized this when an elephant decided to chase after their vehicle for several miles. What started out as an awe-filled sighting quickly became more of a edgy slow-speed chase.

‘Halo Wars 2’ is captivating, but mechanically flawed

Halo Wars 2, a for-console real-time strategy game, straddles the line between joyful and jarring. The sequel to 2011’s Ensemble Studios’ spinoff makes big advancements, particularly by adding PC players to the mix, but controls once again hamper the RTS experience on console.

Before the original Halo Wars on Xbox 360, console-based RTS games didn’t have a whole lot going for them. Between the blighted ports of games like Command and Conquer: Red Alert and Battle for Middle Earth, there was a sizable void that no one dared to fill. Respectable RTS games like Starcraft and Total War required the precision of a mouse and keyboard. A controller couldn’t keep up. But Creative Assembly’s Halo Wars 2 begs to differ. Read more...

Experts say that isn't likely to happen, given the nation's shift toward natural gas and renewable energy. But if the coal sector does rebound, it'd be a boon for thousands of laid-off miners and struggling coal towns.

Yet those jobs won't come without certain risks for workers — not to mention a boost in carbon emissions and toxic air pollutants across the country.

From 'Boober' to #DeleteUber, the 12 times Uber disgusted all of us

Uber's a game-changer for millions of people, providing full-time income (or at least some extra cash) for drivers worldwide, and a (generally) safe, quickly-accessed ride between two points for passengers.

Over the past weekend, former Uber engineer Sarah Fowler became the company's loudest whistleblower yet, by exposing the sexism she faced at the startup, bringing more scrutiny to a problem that's now fully-metastasized inside Uber HQ. Everyone is loving Reese Witherspoon on 'Big Little Lies' and it’s about damn time

If nothing else, Big Little Lies is the televised second coming of Reese Witherspoon. Now a bona fide movie star who doesn't always get or even go for her due, Witherspoon shines on HBO's Lies, based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, and critics have noticed.

While the show itself has garnered mix reviews for dramatic tropes and stock characters and not-unwelcome scenic pornography, the performances, and Witherspoon's in particular, are as mesmerizing as their Monterey backdrop.

With one of many references to Witherspoon's perfect Election character Tracy Flick, The Atlantic notes that "Witherspoon excels as Madeline, finding the sympathetic side of a character who could easily be a monster in the hands of a less adept performer." In a Slate review framed entirely around Witherspoon and her career, Willa Paskin describes Flick as Witherspoon's "personal Batman suit" and "a superpower she refuses to deploy" — until now. The iPhone 8 with two different storage options—64GB and 256GB—according to a new report from Chinese research firm Trendforce. That means the basic model is double the 32GB offered as the lowest storage tier for the iPhone 7.

Here's the huge downside: the cost. Normally, Apple prices the iPhone at $50 to $100 more for each successive storage level. For example, the iPhone 7 is currently $649 for 32GB, $749 for 128GB and $849 for 256GB off-carrier in the U.S.  Read more...

Moana and Maui outwit a giant eight-eyed bat monster in this 'Moana' deleted scene

The underworld of Moana is dark and full of terrors — one of which we never got to see before now.

In this deleted scene shared exclusively with Mashable, Moana and Maui, the heroes of Disney's latest animated triumph, are lurking around the underworld lair of Tomatoa (the giant crab who has Maui's magical hook).

Along the way they encounter a flock of giant, eight-eyed bats that, in the completed film, are only glimpsed for a quick flyover. But as directors Ron Clements and John Musker explain, a cut-for-time scene showed Moana and Maui using conch shells to trick one of the not-very-friendly-looking critters. Read more...

Africa's elusive forest elephants are disappearing

The clock is ticking to save Central Africa's forest elephants.

Populations of the elusive elephants have plunged by around 80 percent inside one of the region's most important nature preserves.

Within Gabon's Minkébé National Park, poachers likely killed about 25,000 forest elephants for their ivory tusks between 2004 and 2014, according to a Duke University-led study in the journal Current Biology.

That's a significant number of animals, considering that Gabon holds about half of the estimated 100,000 forest elephants across all of Central Africa. Read more...

Disney's new research could make wireless charging as easy as downloading your email

Wireless charging is a farce. We’ve basically traded in charging cables for custom-built surfaces that only work if we place our phones right on top of them.

What we want is to walk into a room and have our iPhone 8 start charging automatically. And it looks like that dream is now a tick closer to reality.

A team of scientists at Disney Research (yes, that Disney), have built a gadget-charging, device-powering room that’s safe for humans, their furniture and décor, if perhaps rather ugly.

In a very dense paper published last week in the journal PLOS One, Disney researchers Matthew Chabalko, Mohsen Shahmohammadi and Alanson Sample describe the development of “Volumetric wireless power for livable spaces.” Read more...

EPA's Scott Pruitt enters a hotbed of anti-Trump resistance: his own agency

Usually, new administrators at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are welcomed at headquarters without too much fanfare. That is, until today.

Scott Pruitt — the new EPA administrator nominated to the position by President Donald Trump — gave his welcome address to his agency Tuesday after garnering more "no" votes on the Senate floor than any other EPA nominee since the agency was founded in 1970.

In taking on the job, Pruitt is facing a daunting challenge: stiff resistance from within the agency itself, with current and former employees having protested his nomination, with some taking the nearly unheard of step of openly advocating for senators to vote "no" when it was brought to the Senate floor.  Read more...

A fifth-grader stuck on a math problem went to go to an unusual place for  help when she decided to message the cops on Facebook.

The best part is that the cops actually responded.

Molly Draper shared a few screenshots of her Facebook Messenger app on Friday which showed an adorable interaction between her 10-year-old daughter Lena and the Marion, Ohio, Police Department. According to the post, Lena was a bit stuck on a math problem, so she messaged the cops for a bit of help.

After asking for assistance, Marion Police Dept. Lt. B.J. Gruber, who is in charge of running the page, responded to the request with, “Ok with what?” CBS News reports. Read more...

Urban Outfitters is selling a ridiculous homage to the 90s internet

America may have long ago de-friended MySpace co-founder Tom Anderson, but his likeness is apparently still worth big bucks at the country's number-one destination for hipster clothes.

Urban Outfitters is selling a long-sleeved tee emblazoned with the forgotten social network head's still-familiar face for a pricey $50.

The item is part of a collection that also includes clothes themed after other web has-beens like AOL and Napster.

At $45, the retailer's America Online T-shirt will set you back much more than even the priciest of the once-titan's service packages of its 90s heyday (top-tier was $25.90 per month). Read more...
