'Overwatch' player turns Sombra haters into Sombra lovers with pro plays
Sometimes you have to let your skills do the talking. Overwatch player Bunsen was tired of all the expletive-filled hate he was getting for picking the hero Sombra at the beginning of matches, so he made a video to prove that in the right hands, Sombra can be a great asset to any team. At the beginning of his video, Bunsen shows the kind of abuse that can be dished out to Sombra players, and then turns the hate into praise by making clutch plays and helping his teams toward victories. Whoever says Sombra isn't a viable hero needs to get good. Hilarious photo series shows the alarmingly normal lives of immigrants
In a photograph fading with age, Priya Patel proudly poses in a cap and gown for her preschool graduation picture. Flanked by her beaming aunt and mother, she holds up her paper diploma with a slight smile. It's an adorable, normal moment for most families — but the caption might catch you off guard. "A little #ScaryImmigrant plots to steal jobs," it reads. Patel's image is the latest contribution to the new satirical website Scary Immigrants, which documents the "boringly normal" lives of immigrants. But there's a twist — each photo has a caption that plays off anti-immigrant rhetoric, which often paints immigrants as dangerous or manipulative. Read more... Even though the Samsung Galaxy Note7 is dead and buried, its ghost continues to haunt the smartphone market. The South Korean government published the results of its own investigation into the explosive phone Monday, according to the The Korea Herald. Like Samsung, the state-run Korean Agency for Technology Standards concluded that the Note7's volatility stemmed from its battery. As a result, the government has announced new, stronger regulations for smartphone battery safety. The Agency tested 14 overheated Note 7s, 46 stable phones and 169 batteries provided by Samsung over a three-month period. The tests showed the batteries exhibited "factors that cause explosions," but said there were no flaws with the Note7s themselves. In other words, there wasn't an issue with the phone's construction—just with the battery it contained. Read more... Noted Boston guy Mark Wahlberg has handy excuse for leaving Super Bowl early
Yo! Mark! Marky Mark? Mark Wahlberg from Dorchester? Bro! What gives? Because, I mean, Ben Affleck would never. Mark Wahlberg presents himself to the world as a dyed-in-the-wool "Boston guy." It's a theme that's present in several of his movies. It's in his accent, and it's in his sports fandoms. Being a tough but likable, everyman "Boston guy" has been one of the hooks on which Wahlberg has hung his hat as an actor. That's why many an eyebrow was raised Sunday night when Wahlberg and his family were filmed leaving Super Bowl LI early. At the time, his Patriots were down 28-12 with under 10 minutes to play. No one could fault confused Boston Globe subscribers who woke up to an odd sight on their doorstep: a photo of a defeated Tom Brady with the headline: "A Bitter End." Wait, didn't the Patriots win the Super Bowl, in a historic overtime battle, no less? It appears The Boston Globe, which sends out early editions of its daily newspaper, thought what the rest of the world did — with the Atlanta Falcons leading the Super Bowl by 19 points heading into the fourth quarter, New England had no shot. And then came that misleading photo and dramatic headline. Below the fold, it's clear the early edition was reporting on the game before it ended, presumably because a print deadline loomed. But what was above the fold had social media abuzz, with several making callbacks to the infamous Dewey-defeats-Truman mistake made by a Chicago newspaper in 1948. Read more... Imams in the United Kingdom want to talk. Around 150 mosques across the country welcomed guests on Sunday as anti-Islamic rhetoric and crime continues to flow into everyday life in much of western Europe and the United States. The goal of the event — organized by the Muslim Council of Great Britain and galvanized with the hashtag #VisitMyMosque — was conversation, along with some food and tea. Muslims opened up their mosques so anyone with questions could ask them, no matter the topic. Folks that were gathered at a mosque in Birmingham asked what Muslims think of Jesus and how people there were combatting Islamic State (ISIS), according to Al Jazeera. Sweet short film about a couple is a actually hearing test in disguise
Hearing loss effects many of us, but less people talk about it. A short film, Does Love Last Forever, wants to open up that conversation. The film has two very different outcomes, that depend entirely on the viewer's hearing ability. The film follows a young couple, growing older together. For people with good hearing it would be clear at the end of the film that they are very much in love. For those that have difficulty hearing, the film's audio techniques, choreographed performances and clever editing would make it appear that the couple's relationship is deteriorating as the film goes on. Nothing on the Earth's solid surface is static because all land is moving very slowly due to continental drift. This very slow movement affects everything around you in the same way so you can’t tell it is happening, unless you are able to very accurately measure where on the Earth’s surface you are. The Australian continent, perched on the planet’s fastest moving tectonic plate, is drifting at about seven centimetres a year to the northeast. This is taking features marked on our maps out of line with the global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) such as GPS. YouTube has released an update to its mobile app that will likely make a lot of users very happy: You can now skip 10 seconds forward or backward in a video by double tapping the right or left edge of your phone's screen. Perfect for those quick replays or just skipping a boring portion of the video, the feature is in many cases vastly better than fiddling with the video's slider on the bottom, especially when you're in a hurry. The feature also lets you skip 20 or 30 seconds — Android Authority says these are invoked with a triple or quadruple tap, but I could only get it with a quadruple and quintuple tap, both of which are incredibly hard to get right. Hopefully Google's YouTube dev team will conjure a better way for those longer skips; for now, I recommend you stick to the good old double tap which is the only one that works well. Read more... The lines for hackathon participants to use the 3D printers were taking forever. The team laser-cut the wrong material for the casing. In the future, Apple might give you a way to switch seamlessly between playing music directly into your ears and blasting it out loud for the rest of the world — and not just because your headphone's volume is jacked up way too high. The company was recently granted a patent for a convertible headphone design that looks to transform normal headsets into stereo speakers, which the document calls "dual mode" headphones. According to the design outlined in the patent, listeners would be able to switch between headphone mode and speaker mode either at the touch of a button or by using sensors to detect the positioning of the device. The sensors would also protect the user's ears by preventing the engagement of speaker mode, and a possible built-in amplifier and power source, when the headphone mode is in use. Speaker mode would be engaged when the device is positioned a certain way, as seen in the figure below. Read more... When Stanford University student Reggie Brown told his classmate in 2011 that he wanted photos he'd sent to a girl to disappear, he uttered aloud a thought that had crossed the minds of countless others. But this time, his assertion would lead to the creation of an app that would change the nature of photo messaging and — crucially — sexting, forever. That app became Snapchat. Snapchat's launch has taken sexting — the consensual act of sharing intimate photos — from a stigmatised and seedy activity, to a mainstream and widely-accepted practice. The company has grown significantly since those early dorm-room days — and will soon be a massive public company — thanks in part to its legacy in the world of sexting. Read more... Luckily, @IamAdademiks was there to capture the whole thing. “Every day I wake up and see all this bullshit going in the world, people trying to tear us apart, people trying to make us turn against each other," Drake said. "So tonight, my proudest moment isn't selling tickets or having people sing my songs. My proudest moment, if you take a look around at this room, you’ll see people from all races and all places all we did tonight was come inside this building, show love, celebrate life more life and more music." The gap between average people and and the majority of successful people isn’t that significant. While there are some individuals who are born with incredibly high IQs, monetizable skills, or magnetic personalities that allow them to move up in life, and there are some who simply got lucky, most people aren’t that far apart from one another, and the differences are largely controllable – anyone can become “somebody.” What do successful people do that makes the difference? It’s not that they’re taking huge risks or making decisions that are massively different than yours, like attending one university over another, pursuing a certain career field, learning a specific language, or building connections with powerful people. These are big things, and while these choices and activities may play a role, the real answer is they’re doing a few small things well. Read more... The Tesla Model S P100D has hit a new acceleration record, according to a recent test by Motor Trend. According to Motor Trend, that makes it the first production car to reach 60mph in under 2.3 seconds, beating out the Porsche 911 Turbo S and Ferrari La Ferrari. A software update last December allowed the S P100D to reach 60mph in just 2.4 seconds, according to a tweet from Tesla CEO Elon Musk. He later hinted that "promising test results" might make 2.34 seconds from 0 to 60 mph possible. As pointed out by BGR, the recent record exceeded Tesla's own expectations. Read more... Those aren't just towers—they're enormous, verdant air filters for smog-choked cities. Now China—a nation grappling with dangerous smog from coal plants, factories, and vehicles—will get green buildings of its own. Teens who follow the news on social media are more likely to strongly support the First Amendment, according to a new survey. "Students who actively engage with the news on social media — discussing news with others, commenting on news stories, posting links to news stories — are more supportive of First Amendment freedoms," said a report from the Knight Foundation, a nonprofit focused on journalism and free speech. The survey found a correlation between agreeing with the statement that "people should be able to express unpopular opinions" and social media use. Seventy-one percent of high school students who "often" discussed the news on social media agreed with that statement, versus 56 percent of students who "never" discussed the news online. How does one acquire the ability to manipulate time and space like Doctor Strange? For starters, you hit the gym. In a new behind-the-scenes clip from Doctor Strange, the cast and executive producer Charles Newirth describe the intense physical training Benedict Cumberbatch underwent for his role as a Marvel leading man. "Benedict threw himself into this role," Newirth says, describing the actor's intense training even while he was performing Hamlet on the West End. "He has been game for everything." "You have to be incredibly fit," Cumberbatch observes, noting that fight scenes sometimes took up to five days to film. Whether you love Dust2 or hate it, the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive map produced quite a few memorable moments while it was in competitive rotation. The map was replaced by Inferno, which was recently reworked by developer Valve. Although Dust2 is still playable in casual and deathmatch game modes, it won't be popping up in any pro tournaments for a while — Inferno spent nine months out of Active Duty Group before making its triumphant return. The site's since been wiped from the internet, but whoever scrubbed Spicer's old WordPress blog forgot to delete an important piece of the pie: Spicer's WHOIS data—or the information behind who registered a website, which left unattended, is publicly-available information—including his home address, and his personal phone number. Since the dawn of the space age, humans have launched amazing pieces of advanced technology to orbit. In the process, we've also created a whole lot of space junk. Expendable rocket stages, defunct satellites and random bits of metal traveling at more than 17,000 miles per hour litter the space above Earth, threatening functioning satellites and people living in orbit. Space junk also takes more than just a broom to clean up. A Japanese experiment expected to deploy last week was designed to test out a 70 meter electromagnetic tether that could be used to drag junk down, allowing the material to re-enter Earth's atmosphere, where it would harmlessly burn up. The famous Merriam-Webster dictionary is at it again, keeping President Trump in check with some harsh Twitter shade. When the White House released a list of dozens of terror attacks it claimed were under-reported by the media, it contained plenty of typos. "Attacker" was spelt "attaker," San Bernardino was missing an "r" and the list referred to a country known as "Denmakr." Not that this was the only red flag; the round-up included events like the Paris, Orlando, and San Bernardino attacks, none that anyone would consider "under-covered." Read more... The report, which is the seventh annual look at the solar power workforce in the country, found that solar industry employment outpaced U.S. economic growth by 17 times, with an addition of 51,000 jobs during the year. PayPal just released its first very first bot, and it's going to let you make payments in Slack. Slack users in the U.S., UK, Canada and Australia will be able to use the feature, the company announced in a blog post this morning. You can download it from the Slack App Directory, and to use it, you'll have to link your PayPal and and Slack accounts. After that, you can modify settings on reviewing and approving payments. Sending money in Slack is as easy as typing "paypal" as a slash command. Why would you want to do send money in Slack instead of Venmo or a host of other app? PayPal made a video that shows the situations where a PayPal bot would be useful, like splitting lunch bills with your colleagues or paying them for the coffee they bought for you on their way to work.
