This giraffe birth livestream is driving the internet insane

The internet may occasionally come to your rescue, but it is not patient.

Earlier this week, viewers rallied around a YouTube livestream of a pregnant giraffe named April waiting to give birth at the Animal Adventure Park in New York. The stream was briefly taken down following explicit content reports from pranksters, but under pressure from the web, YouTube quickly reinstated it.

Apparently the old saying that "no press is bad press" stands true, because the stream, which probably would have gone unnoticed by the majority of the internet, got major attention after the controversy. That was Thursday, it's now Sunday and April the giraffe has yet to give birth.  Read more...

Oh hey, Nokia's releasing some underwhelming Android phones

Nokia is back — sort of. The famous Finnish company is now owned by HMD, but it had a major presence at this year's Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona. It was the perfect balance of hype, novelty and nostalgia — the goal being to convince journalists that HMD is taking this whole Nokia thing seriously.

And while the pinnacle of this nostalgia-fest was the resurrected Nokia 3310, HMD was also there to show off a portfolio of inexpensive Android phones. The company promised a global launch for its top phone, the Nokia 6, and introduced two new, cheaper Androids; the Nokia 3 and the Nokia 5.  Read more...

Sean Spicer was once a terrifying White House Easter Bunny

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer is having one hell of a weekend. He riled up journalists with his decision to exclude certain outlets from a press gaggle, he's targeting his own staff for leaks, and he got in a fight with a journalist over where he was born.

But there's another specter of Spicer's past circulating around the web: his tenure as a terrifying Easter Bunny.

NASCAR drivers wears badass 'Star Wars' helmet

While NASCAR fans will be focused on Sunday's big Daytona 500 race, a driver on Saturday got plenty of love for his badass helmet.

Brennan Poole drove Saturday's Powershares QQQ 300 while wearing a helmet painted to resemble Luke Sywalker's headgear from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

The helmet, designed by BEAMdesigns, comes complete with Rebel insignia and even smudges meant to look like wear and tear. It's pretty awesome.  Read more...

Half of the world's species could become extinct, biologists say

Here's the sobering truth: Around half the species on Earth today could disappear by middle of the century, unless we humans can tackle climate change and slow our population growth.

That's a view shared by leading biologists and ecologists, many of whom are gathering in the Vatican this week for a wonky but optimistic-sounding conference: "How To Save the Natural World on Which We Depend."

Scientists estimate that by mid-century, as many as 30 to 50 percent of all species could face extinction.

"The living fabric of the world ... is slipping through our fingers without our showing much sign of caring," the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, which organized the conference, said on its website. Read more...

The brilliant way weather geeks paid tribute to 'Twister' star Bill Paxton

Hundreds of storm chasers and weather geeks mourned the death of U.S. actor Bill Paxton this weekend.

Paxton, who was 61, starred alongside Helen Hunt in Twister, the 1996 film that helped inspire a new generation of storm chasers — those thrill-seekers who track down dangerous weather events for the sake of scientific data, a rush of adrenaline, or both.

In the movie, Paxton and Hunt play a struggling couple that teams up to create an advance weather alert system, putting them square in the path of violent tornadoes.  Read more...

There's a really good reason why stars are wearing blue ribbons on the Oscars red carpet

There is no way the 89th annual Academy Awards was not going to get political.

Some actors and actresses kicked things off before the show even began on Sunday night by wearing blue ribbons attached to tuxes and gowns while they strode upon the red carpet on their way into the event.

The blue ribbons donned by those at the Oscars are meant to show support for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the national non-profit legal organization defending individual liberties and rights.

Yes, blue ribbons represent ACLU. Let us know who you spot wearing them! So far we've seen Ruth Negga and @Lin_Manuel! #Oscars #Oscars2017 https://t.co/2Bo4giuJcT

Here's 5 species to celebrate on International Polar Bear Day

Polar bears have become the poster child for all the horrible things we're doing to the planet. But they're also a symbol of hope.

Wildlife groups are fighting to save the Arctic-dwelling species as their habitat steadily melts and toxic chemicals pile up on the ice.

On Monday, conservationists will celebrate International Polar Bear Day to highlight the small but important steps people can take to help preserve the bears' homes — namely by cutting greenhouse gas emissions to slow the pace of global warming.

Yet polar bears are far from the only species to galvanize wildlife lovers and drive conservation efforts. Read more...

Adorable quokka is either in attack mode, or it really, really wants a hug

It'd be hard to tell if a quokka was angry at you.

The fluffy marsupial's often dubbed "the world's happiest animal" thanks to its cheerful disposition and trust of humans.

So we're not sure if this incredible picture snapped by 21-year-old Campbell Jones from Perth, Australia, is of a quokka aggrieved, or if it just wants to give him a hug.

Jimmy Kimmel calls 'Tanna' cast 'Moanna' dancers on the Oscars red carpet

Gowns and glamour are the norm on the red carpet, but for a brief moment on Sunday night, the Academy Awards were brought way back down to earth.

A few members of the Tanna cast rocked up to the red carpet in traditional garb, representing the Yakel people of Tanna, Vanuatu, where the Best Foreign Language-nominated film is set.

There was dancing, there was colour, there were smiles and hey — the night is young.

While Jimmy Kimmel mistakenly (and ignorantly) called the cast "'Moana' dancers" on Twitter, other people all the world are rooting for them.

Video about sauce actually a clever take on coming out of the closet

What kind of sauce do you like? Ketchup? Barbecue? Mustard? Perhaps a mix of them all?

It's a simple difference, but as the folks at huge LGBTQ pride parade, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras have pointed out in a new video, coming out about your sauce preferences (or sexuality) doesn't have to be a big deal.

'The Walking Dead' recap: Negan's having some personnel issues

This recap contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 7, episode 11, titled "Hostiles and Calamities."

If you thought the La La Land soundtrack was full of earworms, you'd probably forgotten all about "Easy Street," huh?

Luckily, if the Oscars aren't your bag, The Walking Dead is here to offer you a pickle-eating, doctor-burning alternative to Hollywood's most glamorous night, and you can rest assured that no one's going to be winning any prizes in Negan's world any time soon.

After one solid episode and one legitimately good one, the show took two steps back with episode 711, "Hostiles and Calamities" — although for an installment focused on the show's most consistently irritating character, I guess it's remarkable that the hour wasn't as calamitous as it could've been.  Read more...

Casey Affleck wins Best Actor after all

For Casey Affleck, the acting was ultimately enough to overcome the allegations.

Affleck won the Oscar for Best Actor on Sunday night for Manchester by the Sea, a powerfully subtle performance that made him the front-runner for the honor since the film premiered more than a year ago at Sundance. It was one of those performances that earned the "nominee" tag the minute the credits first rolled.

But in September, after old rape allegations took Nate Parker's Birth of a Nation out of the running, Mashable was first to resurface a pair of civil sexual harassment lawsuits — settled out of court — that had the potential to similarly haunt Affleck. Soon, many outlets followed suit, and some Oscar voters, women in particular, began saying privately that they could not support him.  Read more...

Warren Beatty, presenting Best Picture on Sunday night, took a long beat after opening the envelope to name La La Land as the night's top honor to conclude the four-hour telecast. Moments later, producer Jordan Horowitz took the stage to give his acceptance speech for the outcome everyone was expecting.

"There's a lot of love in this room," Horowitz said. "And let's use it to create and champion bold and diverse work ... toward empathy."

But as his colleagues began taking their turns, Horowitz returned to the mic to say: "There's been a mistakeMoonlight won." Read more...

This one tweet explains that truly bizarre Oscars Best Picture mixup perfectly

In what is certainly the weirdest moment in Oscars history, the incorrect Best Picture winner was announced on stage to finish off the 89th Academy Awards.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway first announced La La Land as the big winner of the night. The cast and crew walked onstage and began to make their speeches, only to be stopped halfway through — the correct winner was actually Moonlight. Comedian Jackie Jennings quickly pointed out a perfect explanation for the bizarre mistake.

Netflix and Amazon finally win Oscars

Hollywood finally likes streaming services enough to give them Oscars.

Digital giants Netflix and Amazon both took home their first-ever Oscars on Sunday — but not for the films you may expect.

Iranian film The Salesman, which Amazon is distributing in the U.S., and Netflix's documentary The White Helmets won for Best Foreign Film and Best Documentary Short, respectively.

This marks the first time either service has picked up Hollywood's highest honor. It underscores their efforts to get acknowledged as part of the entertainment industry, rather than disrupters of it.

Tortoise adopts a tiny bunny, proving even so-called rivals can be pals

Admit it: It's hard to resist the sweetness of an interspecies friendship.

Take this tortoise named Wamba who's somehow become best buddies with a tiny "hare" in their short time together.

Bucking the age-old fable about the two animals being rivals, the cottontail bunny made its way into the tortoise's warm shelter during a cold night. It was a safe place for the bunny, who had plant matter stuck around its neck.

Both reside at The Ritz-Carlton at Dove Mountain in Arizona, and photos of the pair were shared on the hotel's Facebook page. The tortoise could've kicked the bunny out, but instead, itdid the opposite. Read more...

The best and worst moments of the craziest Oscars ever

In a major break from tradition, the 2017 Oscars were far from boring. From wins for fan-fueled films like Suicide Squad and Fantastic Beasts to political messages and that ending, the 89th Annual Academy Awards were full of emotionally exhausting surprises — and became one unforgettable night.

Moonlight swings an upset

In the most insane Oscar plot twist ever, the La La Land team was mid-acceptance speech when they stopped to declare that Moonlight actually won best picture.

"This is not a joke," repeated producer Jordan Horowitz (probably because Jimmy Kimmel was in the vicinity) before Warren Beatty returned to show the winning envelope to the camera. Read more...

Twitter quickly made a glorious meme out of that massive Oscars mess

What La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz lost in a Best Picture Academy Award, he gained in memes.

Just as the La La Land producers began thanking people for the shiny new Oscar they won for Best Picture, frantic men in headsets interrupted with a very unexpected announcement. It turns out the underdog Moonlight had actually won.

To prove that it wasn't some lame Jimmy Kimmel bit that involved making further fun of Matt Damon, Horowitz held up the actual card that proved Moonlight's win.

Even police are making jokes about that monster f*ck up at the Oscars

Everyone's still catching their breath after rubbernecking at that calamitous end to the 2017 Oscars.

In case you missed it (where have you been?) La La Land was at first announced as winner of Best Picture. But midway through the speeches, it turned out Moonlight was the actual recipient of the award, leading to one of the most awkward, but thrilling moments in the award show history.

Of course, the perennial jokesters at Australia's Queensland Police were quick to stick the boot in further.

A play-by-play of how 'La La Land' won (but really lost) the Best Picture Oscar

Now that we've had a few minutes to breathe, let's unravel how one of the weirdest moments in awards show history actually went down.

It started, as trouble often does, with Bonnie and Clyde — Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, the stars of the classic film, had the honor of giving the night's biggest award away.

Beatty had the wrong envelope. He was understandably pretty confused, so he stalled as much as he possibly could before letting Dunaway figure out what to do, because delegating unpleasant tasks is the easiest choice.

He wasn't even gonna read it y'all. Warren Beatty woke af.

Emma Stone calls B.S. on Warren Beatty: 'I was holding my Best Actress envelope'

Who you gonna believe — Warren Beatty, Emma Stone, or some other, even weirder version of the truth?

Beatty told millions of people watching the Oscars' jaw-dropping, history-distorting mishap Sunday night that he mistakenly called out La La Land as the Best Picture winner — before it went to Moonlight in a stunning turnaround — because he had the wrong envelope in his hand. That envelope, he said, "said 'Emma Stone, La La Land.'"

His suggestion: Someone had mistakenly handed him the envelope for Stone's Best Actress win, which she'd accepted just moments before. Read more...

All the times the Oscars threw shade at Donald Trump

We can always rely on awards season to be a self-congratulatory parade of beautiful and talented people reflecting on how beautiful and talented their friends are, but this year, the circuit has also been pretty consistent in calling out President Donald Trump and his actions since taking office. The 2017 Oscars were no exception.

Host Jimmy Kimmel kicked things off during his opening monologue with a few subtle jabs, including the fact that the Academy Awards were being broadcast in "225 countries that now hate us," before going for the jugular:

"I wanna say thank you to President Trump — remember last year when we thought the Oscars were racist?" he quipped. Read more...

Finally, a phone that's perfect to bring to an EDM festival

Tons of phones have been announced at Mobile World Congress this year, but none look as electrifying as the Alcatel A5 LED. It features lights on its backside that can be programmed to get the party started.

Whereas some Android phones have an LED light for notifications, the Alcatel A5 LED has 35 large LEDs and hundreds of little ones that can display a variety of different light shows when you get a notification or incoming call.

The LEDs can even pulse to music like an equalizer. The light effect is similar to the pulsing LED lights on the JBL Pulse speaker. Read more...

Modular phones aren't quite dead yet, but the Alcatel A5 doesn't impress

Modular phones were supposed to be the next big thing in mobile. But interest in phones with swappable parts waned as companies like Google and LG abandoned their pet projects.

All hope isn't lost, though. Lenovo's still staying the modular course with its "Moto Mods" for the Moto Z phones, and now you can add Alcatel's A5 to an extremely small list of device's with customizable components.

Alcatel's A5 is "modular" in the same sense the Moto Z is: it offers something more like augmentation than a full device overhaul.

India's Paytm hits 200 million mobile wallet users

In a country where cash is still king, a mobile app that offers online transactions is seeing 700,000 new users join the platform each day.

India’s Paytm has hit 200 million wallet users, CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said Monday.

With this milestone reached, Sharma is also setting his company a new goal to get half a billion Indians to do online transactions using his app in the next four years.

Even though the six-year-old mobile wallet app has been fairly popular among urban Indians for years, it wasn’t until November last year when prime minister Narendra Modi declared the vast majority of cash invalid in the country that its relevance skyrocketed. Read more...

HP embraces 'lapability' with new Pro x2 detachable PC

It's been four years since Microsoft introduced its first Surface tablet and at least two since they coined the term "lapability," which is another way of saying, "This device is really comfortable on your lap."

In that time, Windows system manufacturers have slowly but surely adopted Microsoft's strategy of stuffing full-blown Windows PCs into tablets that can marry with keyboards and turn into lap-friendly ultra-portable devices. In general, Microsoft's designs for the Surface Pro 3 and 4 have been the range's apex, and most partners have offered only pale imitations. Read more...

Sony's Xperia XZ Premium is the world's first phone with a 4K HDR screen

The word overkill doesn't seem to be in Sony's vocabulary.

A year and a half after introducing the Xperia Z5 Premium, the world's first and only smartphone with a 4K display, Sony's now one-upped itself with the Xperia XZ Premium, the world's first phone with a 4K HDR screen.

The display's not the only thing that's bonkers on the Xperia XZ Premium. The phone's camera is also the world's first to be capable of recording slow motion video at a ridiculous 960 frames per second.

By "normal" standards, the Xperia XZ Premium's 5.5-inch 4K (3,840 x 2,160) HDR screen is totally unnecessary, but I guess when you're Sony and you have so little of the mobile pie, you've got to aim for the stratosphere or throw in the towel. Read more...

China's capital is replacing tens of thousands of taxis with electric cars to fight pollution

China's capital city is doing something huge about its perennial pollution issue.

Almost 70,000 petrol powered taxis in Beijing will gradually be replaced with electric vehicles, and any new taxis on the road must be electric, according to a report by the National Business Daily.

The project to replace all the current petrol powered cars is estimated to cost taxi operators $1.3 billion (9 billion yuan).

Some 67,000 of Beijing's 71,000 taxis currently run on petrol.

A conventional car is estimated to cost around $10,000, with an electric vehicle double that amount, at $20,000. Read more...

The Oscars made a big mistake during the In Memoriam

A lot of famous people died in 2016 — producer Jan Chapman wasn't one of them.

The Oscars on Sunday accidentally put a picture of the Australian producer instead of designer Janet Patterson during its In Memoriam portion of the show.

Patterson, who designed looks for films including Far From the Madding Crowd and The Piano, died in October 2016.

Chapman, a producer who is still alive, worked with Patterson on films such as The Piano and Bright Star

Chapman confirmed the mistake, and her vitality, to Variety Monday morning.

“I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson. I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered," she told Variety. "Janet was a great beauty and four-time Oscar nominee and it is very disappointing that the error was not picked up. I am alive and well and an active producer.” Read more...

It's that 'Moonlight's' win is historic. It's the first time a film featuring an LGBT character has won.  It's also the first time an all-black cast has won.  Read more...

Steve Harvey slyly jokes about Oscars blunder after everyone drags him into it

As you probably know by now, a monumental mistake occurred at the end of the Oscars on Sunday night.

La La Land was announced as winner of Best Picture, and the entire cast and crew had already gone up to the stage to accept the award before it was discovered that in fact Moonlight was the rightful winner.

We now know the blunder was the result of presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty having been given the wrong envelope. However, in the heat of the moment, responses and reactions were flying fast and hot on Twitter, and inevitably Steve Harvey was mentioned. He was mentioned many times.

John Oliver compares the Republican replacement for Obamacare with a thong

Republicans want to repeal Obamacare, but they are discovering (finally) that many people actually need the health care coverage that the Affordable Care Act provides to survive.

John Oliver dedicated a segment to Obamacare on Sunday's episode of Last Week Tonight, explaining its benefits and its weaknesses. He also points out that Republicans haven't come up with any sort of viable alternative to Obamacare, despite the fact that they want to get rid of it so desperately.

Oliver also compares Obamacare with a goat, and the closest thing the Republicans have to a plan with a thong. Classic. Read more...

Never mind the Oscars, Britain hosted its own awards ceremony... for kebabs

The world watched the Oscars with bated breath on Sunday night, but another awards ceremony was also taking place with something of a more culinary focus.

Britain hosted its very own equivalent of the Oscars — the British Kebab Awards. Nice.

With 1.3 million kebabs sold every day across Britain, it's safe to say the much-loved kebab is an institution in the UK.

Seventeen kebab shops from across the UK won awards in categories ranging from Best Kebab Van to Best Fine Dining Restaurant. The winner of the kebab van award went to Atalay Kebab Van in Thame, Oxfordshire, while Veyso's in Hertford won the award for best Fine Dining Restaurant. Pizza King Kebab House in Edmonton was named best takeaway in London

BBC Radio 1 DJs Chris Stark and Scott Mills hosted the event, which was attended by politicians including Andrew Percy MP, Barry Gardiner MP, and Simon Danczuk MP

True to British form, people flocked to Twitter to express their enthusiasm for the Kebab Awards, and their lack thereof for the Oscars. Read more...

The first-look at Samsung's Galaxy S8 was probably just leaked in this video

Samsung broke more than a few hearts when it didn't show off the highly-anticipated Galaxy S8 at this year's Mobile World Congress over the weekend. That doesn't mean Samsung fans are gonna be left in the dark, though.

Officially, all we got from Samsung over the weekend was a buzzy promo video hyping the S8's official unveiling on March 29.

Unofficially, newly-leaked video just surfaced, claiming to show an actual working Galaxy S8 for the first time.

The video was posted by UK-based accessory site MobileFun, which provided no real context to prove the footage is legit. We don't see much, since the footage only lasts for a few seconds, but the leaked phone boasts the massive edge-to-edge screen design we've been expecting from the S8, so it's hard to just pass off as a fake.  Read more...

Ripples in space and time carry the future of space science

Billions of years ago, two black holes merged in a violent explosion that rippled the fabric of our universe.

Those cosmic ripples — known as gravitational waves — produced by this collision spread far and wide in all directions, carrying with them information about the black holes that brought them into being.

In September 2015, that information made it to Earth. While these weren't the first gravitational waves to reach our planet, they were the first we could observe.

Two powerful tools known as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatories (LIGO) were able to directly observe the gravitational waves sent out by the two black holes, opening up a new way for scientists to study the inner-workings of some of the most extreme objects in the universe.  Read more...

Wife presents husband with 'Best Husband' Oscar and it's relationship goals

Actors and actresses aren't the only people that deserve to get all dressed up, be honored by their peers and win fancy awards. Regular humans do amazing things everyday that aren't starring in a sad movie about the sea.

That's why Regine Brown's mom held her own version of the Oscars and presented her husband with the award for "Best Husband."

The game that reveals how hacktivism thrives when government becomes oppressive

Hacking is well-known in gaming, indicative of a predilection for hacker culture but often without the culture itself. By contrast, hacktivism — the intersection of hacking and social activism — has gone relatively unexplored in gaming.

Hacking as gameplay

The Deus Ex games, most notably Mankind: Divided, focused on technology as a way to subvert power structures and ultimately overthrow the corrupt establishment. Though the gameplay focuses on infiltration, technology is how Jensen pulls apart the Illuminati, byte by byte.

Shadowrun used hacking (or in the Shadowrun vernacular, decking) and technomancy (decking through use of magic) as a tool for stealing from and embarrassing the handful of MegaCorps that run the game’s world. Some deckers, namely the environmental hacktivists from the fictional Salish-Shidhe region (formerly British Columbia), see technomancy as a necessity to ensure the future survival of their land. When a MegaCorp comes sniffing around, eager to exploit the bounties of the Salish-Shidhe, they aren’t afraid to drive them back with everything they have, including technomancy.  Read more...

'Middle-earth: Shadow of War' game revealed after Target screw-up

You might have heard rumors over the weekend, but now it's official: we're going back to Middle-earth.

AT&T fires the latest shot in the war over unlimited data, here's what it means for you

AT&T's feeling the pressure from its other wireless competitors. And today, it's showing.

AT&T announced its new "unlimited" wireless plans on Monday. We're putting "unlimited" in quotes because once you use 22 GB of data, AT&T starts slowing you down.

The new plan also offers 10 GB of hotspot tethering, for when you're stuck with your laptop, and don't have WiFi.

The plan costs $90 per month for one line, and $145 for two lines. Each additional line (up to eight) runs an additional $20.

It's the second new "unlimited" plan from AT&T in the last two weeks. The first plan offered a slightly less appealing deal at $100 with no hotspot data.  Read more...

Oppo's new tech brings eye-popping zoom to smartphone cameras

Prior to its event at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday, China's Oppo — currently the fourth largest smartphone maker in the world — promised to shake the world of smartphone photography with its "5x" technology.

Now, we know what Oppo was referring to: A 5x lossless zoom, previously unheard of on a smartphone (unless it had a huge, bulging lens on the back).

Oppo's technology consists of two lenses. One is fairly standard, and another is what Oppo calls a "periscope" lens — a horizontally-positioned telescope lens that gets its light through a prism, similar to the way a submarine periscope works. The entire setup is only 5.7mm thick, meaning it could easily fit on a smartphone with a tiny bump.  Read more...

The Oscars showed yet again why it's never over till it's over

Your voice matters. Your vote matters. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences got another reminder last night that there is no such thing as a sure thing, despite whatever you're hearing/reading/predicting.

The 89th Oscars were — for the most part — a triumph for diverse filmmaking and nuanced stories, with Moonlight ultimately clinching Best Picture from alleged sure-thing La La Land. The last-minute plot twist had many comparing Moonlight's win to the 2016 election, which should have been a lifelong wake up call to remember that if people are voting on something, anything can happen. The next big trend in phones? Nostalgia.

If you'd told me last year that the Mobile World Congress — the biggest mobile industry event of the year apart from the iPhone launch — would be dominated by Nokia and BlackBerry, I'd call you names. Slightly offensive, silly names.

But it's exactly what's happening, and it's not just due to the absence of Samsung's Galaxy S8, whose launch date got shifted to late March. There's a genuine feeling that users are sick of the big-screened, battery-draining smartphone, and they want something different.

Take BlackBerry's KEYone for example. It's an Android smartphone with a physical keyboard, and while that set of traits would've gotten it immediately laughed off a few years ago (as proven by BlackBerry's now non-existent market share), this year it's the phone that stands outOur article about that phone was shared more than any other MWC news item this year, and we could see the interest firsthand at BlackBerry event in Barcelona, which also generated tons of buzz on social media.  Read more...

'EVE Online' developers want to make VR sports — vsports — a thing with 'Sparc'

The unfortunate reality about sports is that they're severely limited to what the laws of physics and the human body can allow and endure. That's where "vsports" come in.

CCP Games, the developer behind EVE Online, announced Sparc today, a brand new competitive virtual reality game self-described as a vsport — or VR sport. The game looks like an intense, first-person version of Pong except players' hands act as the paddles as the game ball whips back and forth across the futuristic arena.

"Players use their motion controllers to throw projectiles at their opponents from a distance, and in turn defend themselves by dodging, blocking or deflecting the incoming attacks," CCP Games said in a release.  Read more...

Here are the world's 12 scariest drug-resistant superbugs

In a world awash in antibiotics, dangerous infections are getting even harder to fight.

The problem? Bacteria are outsmarting the drugs meant to wipe them out at a faster pace than new antibiotics can be discovered and produced.

To address the growing crisis of antibiotic resistance, global health officials on Monday listed a dozen antibiotic-resistant "priority pathogens" that pose the greatest threats to human health.

The first-of-its-kind list is meant to steer public and private research dollars toward developing new antibiotics for these particular families of bacteria, the World Health Organization (WHO) said. The announcement is also designed to push public agencies to support more research by pharmaceutical companies, which currently lack financial incentives to develop new drugs aimed at rare, but deadly, superbugs. How 'Moonlight' made Oscars history

Moonlight's big night at the Oscars was a historic night and not just for the stunning way in which the filmmakers found out they had won "Best Picture."

Rather, Moonlight broke new ground for Oscar winners, becoming both the first film featuring a completely non-white cast to win the Best Picture Oscar and the first film focused on an LGBTQ character to win Hollywood's top prize.

The big night for Barry Jenkins' coming-of-age indie drama came the day after Moonlight swept through the Independent Spirit Awards, winning all six categories it was nominated in.   Read more...

Halle Berry apparently relaxed after the Oscars with a quick skinny dip

Yep — this isn't the first time a presenter has incorrectly announced the winner during a live broadcast, and after last night's short-lived "Best Picture" win for La La Land, people are throwing it back to a similar (but less cringeworthy) flub that went down at the 1964 Academy Awards ceremony.

Let's read way too much into this cryptic video of Lorde drinking soda

The new era of Lorde is upon us, and god bless, there are snacks.

The singer appears to have taken a television ad out in her native New Zealand announcing new music out this Friday, a week before her Saturday Night Live performance.

Right now, we just have this bootleg video to work with:

Lorde is just sitting in the backseat of a car, possibly after hitting up a drive-thru, while some music plays.

Most critically, the ad advertises two dates and locations as well — March 2 and 3 in New York City and New Zealand respectively, meaning something will likely happen in both places simultaneously when the time difference is factored in.  Read more...

Why are other mobile phones shining right now? Because Samsung isn't

Out of the dozens of smartphones announced at Mobile World Congress every year, the only ones that have historically mattered were Samsung’s flagship Galaxy phones.

In years past, the Korean electronics giant uses MWC in Barcelona as a global stage to launch new Galaxy S phones.

This year, however, was different. Following the disastrous Galaxy Note7 launch that saw the phones explode due to faulty batteries (and eventually led to two global recalls and the phone's discontinuation), Samsung faced a tough call.

It could have stuck to its schedule and announced the Galaxy S8 at MWC this year, and risked looking like it was rushing a new device out the door in a push to get everyone to forget about the Note7. Or it could've delayed the Galaxy S8, to give consumers more time to forgive and forget,  giving itself more time to ensure its batteries are 100 percent safe and won’t explode.  Read more...

New Windows 10 update warns users against installing apps from outside the Windows Store

Windows users, take note: a potentially annoying update is headed your way.

Microsoft is currently testing an update to Windows 10 that will prevent you from installing apps from outside the Windows Store, MSPowerUser reports. The feature is similar to a feature on Macs, which by default prevents users from installing apps from "unidentified developers". The update is set to release in April in the upcoming Creator's Update.

As of now, the feature will be turned off by default. It's supposed to help protect casual users from malware and bloatware, but it could impact developers who release their apps via direct downloads from their websites rather than via the official Windows Store. The company is also reportedly working on a ChromeOS-like version of Windows 10 that will completely prevent installing Win32 apps. Read more...

Roborace, Formula E's long-developing autonomous racing series, just unveiled its first self-driving race car at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. iPad artist turns his side hustle into official NBA art
