Trump's FCC wants to let your cable company sell your data, because who cares about privacy?

Under President Donald Trump, it seems like every department in the executive branch is racing to see who can undo regulations the fastest. And at the FCC? That means negotiating with cable companies about your data.

Newly-installed Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai is working on stopping privacy rules from the it-feels-like-oh-so-long-ago Obama era, which require internet providers to get your explicit permission before selling or sharing your information, Business Insider reported

The rules were approved in October, and went into partial effect in January. But lucky for the Trump FCC, a provision requiring internet providers to "engage in reasonable data security practices" doesn't take effect until March 2.  Read more...

Gigi Hadid takes the pussyhat to the runway at Milan Fashion Week

Guess the pink yarn shortage is over: Missoni models—including Gigi Hadid—brought the now-iconic pussyhat to the runway Saturday at Milan Fashion Week.

It wasn't just the models making a statement. Staffers and attendees also received hats of their own, making the whole program a wonderland of pink ears and solidarity. And, of course, a fair amount of selfie-taking.

Even the designer, Angela Missoni, kept hers on for post-show photo ops with guests.

Yes, something actually beat Batman v. Superman for Worst Picture at the 2017 Razzies

Blockbuster letdown Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice was considered the favorite at this year's Razzies, AKA, the Golden Raspberry Awards for terrible movies, having racked up a whopping eight nominations.

With those kinds of odds, one would think it'd take a pretty gut-wrenchingly awful movie to upset the widely-panned superhero bonanza in each of the event's top (or bottom) prizes.

Luckily for Zack Snyder and company, Razzie voters found such a film in...conservative pundit Dinesh D'Souza's Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party. Read more...

Donald Trump makes history, bows out of White House Correspondents dinner

Amid an ever-escalating war with the media, Donald Trump tweeted Saturday that he wouldn't attend the White House Correspondents Association's annual dinner. The dinner is an opportunity for a comedian to roast the press and the president, and for the president to roast everyone else. Trump's absence would mark the first time in the event's history a president has refused to attend.

I will not be attending the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 25, 2017

Everyone is having a field day with news that Trump is skipping the Correspondents' Dinner

President Donald Trump tweeted on Saturday that he won't attend this year's White House Correspondents' Dinner for, uh, no reason.

Maybe the White House foresaw that Trump's skills might not lie in his comedy routines? Maybe Trump remembered how the last few dinners that mentioned him went? Or maybe he wanted to be the one to back out before every other media organization could cancel

Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma are beefing right now and dear god nobody was ready for all the shade

Hope you're hungry, because Nicki Minaj is serving up some prime, grade-A beef between her and fellow rapper Remy Ma, and we were all unprepared.

The internet went into collective freakout mode on Thursday night after rapper Gucci Mane released a new track, "Make Love," featuring Nicki Minaj.

On the track Nicki raps:

"Oooohhh, oh you the qu-e-e-the queen of this here?/

One platinum plaque, album flopped, bitch, where? (bitch, where?)...

You see, silly rabbit, to be the queen of rap/

You gotta sell records, you gotta get plaques."

Little background, here: Nicki Minaj has famously declared herself the Queen of Rap, on several occasions—including but not limited to her feature on Ariana Grande's "Side to Side" ("I'm the queen of rap, young Ariana run pop") and her feature on Rae Sremmurd's "No Flex Zone - Remix" ("Run this game for 5 years/ guess that's why my feet hurt...Yes, I am an icon, that's me on your t-shirt"). Hmm, maybe this is why Trump doesn't want to attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner

On Saturday, Donald Trump made history as the first president to bow out of the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

And while this has much to do with Trump's ever-worsening battle with the press and his constant struggle to book talent, it's also worth remembering that, to be frank, Trump probably has another reason for ditching:

He usually gets clobbered at these things.

So, in the interest of, uh, elucidation, please enjoy these videos of Trump getting roasted at the 2011 and 2016 White House Correspondents' Dinner. Better yet, enjoy Trump's mirthless reactions. They're uncomfortable to watch, but extremely worth it. Read more...

Perfect 6-for-6 sweep: 'Moonlight' walks through the Indie Spirits

In the beginning, there was Moonlight. At the end, there was also Moonlight.

Writer/director Barry Jenkins' deeply resonant cinematic tryptich of a young Miami man's life won all six Independent Spirit Awards for which it was nominated Saturday — including the first award given away, and the last — a triumphant result for the film many hope can upset La La Land at the Academy Awards.

Moonlight was the odds-on favorite at the Indie Spirits, but a sweep was hardly guaranteed. It became a reality, though, over the course of an afternoon beneath a giant white tent on the beach near the Santa Monica Pier. Read more...

LG claims the battery on its X Power2 phone lasts the whole weekend

Frustrated with smartphone batteries that last only half a day? LG's new smartphone, the company claims, is a whole-weekend piece of hardware.

The LG X Power2 — a new product in the company's "specialist" line — has a monstrous 4,500 mAh battery, which allows for 15 hours of video playback or 18 hours of web surfing, per LG's claims.

The battery is more generous than that of the phone's predecessor, the LG X Power, which had a 4,100 mAh battery, but it's not the largest battery around. Then again, the LG X Power2 is not as fat as some other phones, coming in at 154.7 x 78.1 x 8.4mm. Plus, it apparently takes only two hours to fully charge. Read more...

Who is this random guy Fox News had on to talk about Swedish security?

A trans-Atlantic wave of puzzlement is rippling across Sweden for the second time in a week, after a prominent Fox News program featured a "Swedish defense and national security advisor" who's unknown to the country's military and foreign-affairs officials.

Swedes, and some Americans, have been wondering about representations of the Nordic nation in the U.Ssince President Donald Trump invoked "what's happening last night in Sweden" while alluding to past terror attacks in Europe during a rally Feb. 18. There hadn't been any major incident in Sweden the previous night.

LG G6 ushers in a new era of smartphones with huge screens

How much bigger can your smartphone screen become? You're about to get the answer.

LG just announced a new flagship phone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona — the LG G6. Although it's not all screen on the front, it's pretty damn close. And it's widely rumored that Apple and Samsung will also try to reach that goal on their upcoming flagship products.

The phone has, as LG puts it, a 5.7-inch screen in a 5.2-inch body, and it looks impressive. The phone feels tiny for today's phablet standards, and yet it has a beautiful 2,880x1,440-pixel screen. It also has rounded corners, which make it harder to break if it falls. They're also a subtle visual detail that makes the device look a lot more elegant.  Read more...

'Ring of fire' solar eclipse will blaze across the Southern Hemisphere

A "ring of fire" eclipse will be visible from the Southern Hemisphere on Sunday morning, although anyone can catch the spectacle live via the space site Slooh.com.

Sunday's solar phenomenon is known as an annular eclipse. It happens when the moon slides in between the sun and the Earth but doesn't completely block the sun, as would a total solar eclipse.

Instead, a thin, fiery ring of the sun's edges blaze like an iris on an enormous, menacing eye.

Huawei's new flagship P10 phones certainly look familiar

Every phonemaker is trying to "innovate" in the same way in 2017, with sleek devices that are basically all screen and glass.

But Huawei, the third largest smartphone maker in the world, isn't playing that game. The company just launched its new flagships, the P10 and the P10 Plus, at a Mobile World congress event in Barcelona, and these phones aren't a radical departure from their predecessors.

The biggest change on the 5.2-inch P10 and the 5.5-inch P10 Plus is the new fingerprint sensor on the front. It's a smooth, glass surface that responds to touches with a subtle vibration, and it also replaces Android's standard on-screen controls (which can be turned on in the settings, if you so desire). Note that like the sensor on the iPhone 7, this isn't technically a button. Read more...

Jerk alligator steals a huge fish off a little boy's line

Today, a little boy named Connor learned the brutal lesson that Mother Nature has no manners.

In a clip posted to the Bass Masters And Fish Experts Facebook Page, a thieving alligator had an easy lunch thanks to some humans fishing off a pier.

In the clip, a young boy hooks a pretty sizable fish, and as one man encourages the boy to reel in the fish all on his own, another spots an alligator lurking near the pier. The man tries to distract the gator by hitting the side of the pier with his arm, but the reptile was determined to get its eats.

"You need to cut your line," one the of the men tells the little boy as the gator swims away with his catch.  Read more...

All-star Gorillaz fan gets Damon Albarn to confirm new album is done

A single for the as-yet-untitled album already dropped on Jan. 19, delivering a charged political message on the day before Donald Trump's inauguration.

MashReads Podcast: George Saunders' 'Lincoln in the Bardo' is a perfect novel

George Saunders has a rule for art: "If you do it right, it's almost like this beautiful prism, and no matter what the time is, you can shine a light through it and it will make some sense."

It's an apt description and an excellent way to describe Saunders' newest book Lincoln in the Bardo, a postmodern novel that's both incredibly timely and quintessentially timeless.

Lincoln In The Bardo tells the story of one fateful night in a Georgetown graveyard in 1862. When his son Willie dies, a grief-stricken Abraham Lincoln goes to visit his body three times throughout the course of a night. But unbeknownst to him, he's not the only inhabitant in the graveyard.  Read more...

This crazy-thin phone charger is the size of three stacked credit cards

Bill Paxton, star of '80s and '90s genre films and TV, dead at 61

Bill Paxton, the versatile character actor whose presence across dozens of genre films and blockbusters in the '80s and '90s made him a uniquely familiar face, has died, Mashable has confirmed. He was 61.

Paxton died Saturday, with the cause cited as "complications from surgery" in a statement from his family:

Paxton may not have been the biggest household name in Hollywood, but you could hardly tell that from his credits: Titanic, The Terminator, Apollo 13, Weird Science, Aliens, Big Love, Marvel's Agens of S.H.I.E.L.D. and most recently the TV adaptation of Training Day — Paxton was one of those guys who seemed to be in everything. The one thing that says everything about Bill Paxton's badass career

Bill Paxton leaves behind the legacy of a total badass.

The actor, who died unexpectedly on Saturday, has the unusual and entirely amazing distinction of being the only actor to play characters killed by a Terminator, a Predator and a Xenomorph (of Alien fame).

The grim achievement speaks to Paxton's ubiquity as a character actor in some of the biggest genre films of the '80s and '90s. His victim status in three of the biggest sci-fi releases of the 20th century earns him the cult hero equivalent of an EGOT.

To convince the public to buy these bonds, the government embarked on a publicity campaign of unprecedented scale.

This is because the original Nokia 3310 — which came out in 2000, years before the smartphone revolution — was a nearly indestructible device with a battery that lasted forever. And it included a game that everyone loved: Snake

Guy quits his crappy job in the best way possible

Giving two weeks is a pretty standard practice when employees move on from their current job. It allows the company a short amount of time to search for a replacement, and gives the employee an opportunity to leave on good standing. You never know when you may need that reference — or worse, when you may need your old job back.

While most people quickly Google "two-week notice letter" and follow a pretty standard form, this guy decided on a different method.
