Series of kick-ass storms roar across Atlantic towards UK and France

While this winter has been downright tame across large parts of the eastern U.S., the same cannot be said for much of Western Europe. Right now, an extremely powerful jet stream is helping to spawn one massive North Atlantic storm after another, bringing hurricane force winds to parts of the UK, France, Portugal and Spain this week.

Next week, a severe storm may spin up in the Mediterranean, lashing Italy with rain and wind.

Numerous weather warnings are in effect for Friday in the UK, France, Portugal and Spain as one particularly significant storm moves through, bringing winds that could gust as high as 80 miles per hour.  Read more...

This wearable device can turn any surface into a keyboard

There are a lot of gimmicky takes on the classic QWERTY keyboard — from colorful devices that look like old-school typewriters to a foldable thing that converts into a stick. But a wearable device that can eliminate keyboards entirely? That's something else.

The team at Tap Systems Inc. has invented a new wearable called Tap Strap, which essentially lets you turn the world into a giant keyboard.

The strap has five holes that you put your fingers through, and it's embedded with sensors that track information about your hands and fingers. The wearable can be connected to almost any device, just as long as it has Bluetooth. You then tap your fingers on any surface, and those taps are turned into commands and characters.  Read more...

Charles Barkley has a very NSFW message for his haters

Charles Barkley has a message for his haters.

The TNT analyst hopped on the mic at an Atlanta nightclub Tuesday night and threw some f-bombs at his critics, which probably won’t do much to calm the chaos of the last few days.

LeBron James ripped Barkley earlier this week — the final straw in a long-standing feud between the two — but Barkley is sticking to his comments that set off the Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star in the first place.

So, after wishing everyone a good night at Atlanta’s Koo Koo Room and dropping into one of his favorite songs, he said: "For all you fucking haters, fuck y'all!" Read more...

The huge #TechHasNoWalls protest started on Slack

Media and telecommunications giant Comcast took a cue from Google Thursday as employees from several offices protested President Donald Trump's de-facto Muslim ban. And got a boost from Slack.

From Comcast headquarters in Philadelphia to offices in New York, Washington, D.C., and Silicon Valley, workers joined together to rally against Trump's executive order that temporarily bans immigrants from seven Muslim-majority nations and his call for a Mexican border wall. The rallies sparked the inspiring hashtag #TechHasNoWalls.

A similar scene took place outside Google offices earlier this week, but Comcast's rallies had a unique starting point: Slack, the messaging and communications tool used by businesses. Read more...

The sushi croissant is the most California thing to ever happen, ever

When will the weird food trends end? Are we just going to keep going until one of use makes something so disgusting we just decide as a society that we've had enough?

With the new sushi croissant from California's Mr. Holmes Bakehouse, we might be getting close.

Sushi croissant

Way different than Kit Kat sushi, the sushi croissant is exactly what it sounds like: it is literally a croissant stuffed with sushi.

The sushi is composed of smoked salmon, seaweed, ginger and wasabi and will only cost you $5, if you dare.

From a bakery whose jobs page states, “If you’re as serious about baking as you are about getting baked, then get at us," we can't say this comes as much of a surprise.  Read more...

Our first look at Snapchat's biggest risks and most powerful enemies

Snapchat essentially got its start by eliminating risk. Want to send a nude to a lover or a goofy face to a friend? Don't worry, it'll disappear in 10 seconds.

But now, as a startup that just filed to go public, the risks look pretty damn real. The word "risk" appears 87 times in Snap Inc.'s Form S-1 filed Thursday.

Here they are in summary, with our background and more plain English explanations:

1. Keeping its users happy

Snapchat is reminding the public that one day it may not be the hottest app to the kids. In fact, we've already seen a slowdown in the app's growth. A Bloomberg report from June 2016 revealed Snapchat had 150 million daily active users. According to S-1 filing, that came more than 7 months later, Snapchat has added only 8 million daily active users.  Read more...

How to get through border security without giving up your data

Customs agents at United States airports often ask travelers from outside the country to hand over their phone. Agents can ask for the password, and, from there, snoop through whatever they want.

There were reports of agents confiscating international travelers' phones after President Donald Trump's executive order banning travel from seven predominantly Muslim countries caused chaos last weekend, leaving many wondering about their rights.

Travelers can refuse to hand over their phones, but immigration lawyers say that's not going to help them get into the country.

Some will argue that if a traveler has nothing to hide, then handing over a phone shouldn't be a problem. But this is demonstrably false. Plus, the issue shines yet another spotlight on the privacy vs. safety debate.  Read more...

'Riverdale' recap: Episode 2 makes an arrest, but we're just here for Betty and Veronica

This recap contains spoilers for Riverdale Season 1, episode 2, titled "A Touch of Evil."

Previously on Riverdale … Archie (KJ Apa) got hot, Jason Blossom's (Trevor Stines) body was discovered with a bullet hole in his head — meaning he didn't drown like his twin sister Cheryl (Madelaine Petch) said — and Archie, Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica's (Camila Mendes) iconic love triangle was born with Betty's broken heart.

As subversive as Riverdale gets with Archie Comics canon, underneath the darkness and grit of the world created in The CW series, all of the characters are still pretty much the same as their comic book counterparts. Yes, Archie's now a hot varsity football player caught in an illicit teacher/student affair with Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel), but underneath his buff exterior, he's still the girl-crazy redhead who always tries to do the right thing, even if he doesn’t succeed most of the time. Mobile recharge shops in India's largest state are selling phone numbers of young girls: Report

A new safety issue has surfaced for young girls in northern India.

Phone recharge shops in Uttar Pradesh, India's largest state by geography, are reportedly selling mobile phone numbers of innocent girls.

Local police say that prices depend on the 'looks' of the girls and vary between Rs 50 (74 cents) to Rs 500 ($7). Buyers include boys of the area who stalk these women with calls and obscene photos thereafter.

The shocking racket was busted when a 24X7 police helpline set up by the UP chief minister was flooded with complaints from women about unsolicited calls from boys. About 90% of those complaints dealt with harassment of women over phone calls, the Hindustan Times report added. Read more...

Coca-Cola with fiber in it sounds like a mad scientist's fever dream

It's almost impossible to mention Coca-Cola and "healthy" in the same sentence.

But that's exactly what Coca-Cola is trying to do in Japan with a fibre-laden Coke variant it calls Coca-Cola Plus.

The drink, which has no calories or sugar in it, contains 5 grams of indigestible dextrin, providing dietary fibre to your system.

Coca-Cola Plus used to be on the shelves around six years ago, but seems to have disappeared for the past couple of years — until now.

The previous Coca-Cola Plus iteration, according to CNN, had a far lower 1.7 grams of dietary fibre. Even so, that added a weird viscous mouthfeel to the soda, so it would be interesting to know what 5 grams tastes like. Read more...

This might be Kellyanne Conway’s most ‘alternative fact’ yet

President Trump's adviser Kellyanne Conway has blamed two Iraqi refugees for a massacre that never happened.

Conway is building a reputation for citing falsehoods, untruths and outright lies as "alternative facts". The latest such example of this is an interview she did with MSNBC where she spoke about the "Bowling Green massacre" in an effort to defend Trump's controversial travel ban. The trouble is there was no such massacre.

“I bet it’s brand new information to people that President Obama had a six-month ban on the Iraqi refugee program after two Iraqis came here to this country, were radicalised and they were the masterminds behind the Bowling Green massacre," Conway told host Chris Matthews on MSNBC's Hardball programme.  Read more...

Irish schoolchildren have very blunt opinions about Donald Trump

Kids really don't beat around the bush when they're asked a question.

In the video above the children of St. Ultan's Primary School in Dublin, Ireland were asked by the Independent for their thoughts on Donald and Melania Trump.

Their responses on Trump range from "He's filthy rich" and "He likes building walls" to "He's a nightmare" and "He looks like he gots loads of spray tans gone wrong".

The video has had well over 5,500 likes and around 9000 shares on Facebook, but it's also drummed up some concern.

"Not sure this is good for kids," wrote Ann Duffy in the most-liked comment. "We teach them not to make fun of people and then we do it!" Read more...

Don't ever try to use 'Harry Potter' against J.K. Rowling in an argument

LONDON — As we've learned over the past week, throwing insults at J.K. Rowling on Twitter is a very bad idea.

But attempting to use references from her own books to win an argument? That's an even worse plan.

Some longtime Super Bowl advertisers will take part from the sidelines this year

For the past decade, the antics of Dortitos-obsessed dogs, babies and jerkish men have been a crowd-pleasing staple of Super Bowl commercial breaks.

Many of the chip brand's ads were so popular that they entertained people well beyond their short seconds on air through social media shares and online views in the millions.

So recently, parent company Frito-Lay started to wonder: Does it really still need the whole Super Bowl part?

"Back when we started 10 years ago, YouTube would get like 8 millions visits a month. They get billions a day now," said Frito-Lay's chief marketing officer, Jennifer Saenz. "It was about looking at the media landscape and understanding how consumers were engaging." Read more...

MashTalk: What even is Instagram anymore?

OK, it's not really dead — it's still growing like crazy — but if you read Mashable Tech Editor Pete Pachal's obituary for Instagram, you might agree that it's no longer the app you once knew and loved.

Pete makes a good case that Instagram has lost its way (0:44). As the company introduces more new features (most of which appear to be copied from Snapchat), the more it moves away from being the app where people share their single best, most perfect photo to being, well, just another version of Facebook.

I agree that adding photo albums would taint Instagram, but at the very same time, I know that new changes to beloved apps always upset people at first, but then we all move on. It's your choice to stick to the platform or abandon it if decides to be something else. Read more...

Radio stations across the country hacked to play explicit anti-Trump anthem

Well, here's one way to get a message across.

By taking advantage of a vulnerability found in a common model of Low Power FM (LPFM) radio transmitters, hackers have repeatedly flooded airwaves across the country with an anti-Trump anthem, sending a very specific message to the nation's sitting commander-in-chief: "FDT."

The hackers are reportedly commandeering the LPFM stations to broadcast "F*ck Donald Trump," the protest anthem from rappers YG and Nipsey Hussle, on an endless loop.

The vulnerability stems from unsecured Barix Exstreamer transmitters, Ars Technica reports. The devices can be openly connected to the internet, exposing them to hacking threats if stations don't take the appropriate precautions. Barix warned customers of the vulnerability last April, advising users to implement 24-character passwords and beef up their connections by using a VPN and securing their devices behind firewalls. In an interview with MSNBC, Conway said: "I bet it's brand new information to people that President Obama had a six-month ban on the Iraqi refugee program after two Iraqis came here to this country, were radicalized, and they were the masterminds behind the Bowling Green massacre." Read more...

Emilia Clarke wraps up 'Game of Thrones' filming with an R. Kelly lip sync

Filming for Season 7 of Game of Thrones is wrapping up, and the Khaleesi is celebrating in the correct way: with a song about flying.

Yes, Emilia Clarke Instagrammed herself Friday lip-syncing to R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly," a song that, for Westeros' sake, we hope her character takes to heart.

A video posted by @emilia_clarke on

Clarke also shared some thoughts about the much-anticipated seventh season.

"I BELIEVE THIS ONE'S GONNA BE A MIND BLOWER," she wrote, including a fire emoji so we know she's serious. Read more...

Super smart Reporter thinks he's figured out how teens use emojis

Have you ever wanted to know how teens convey secret messages in their text messages?

If so, look anywhere else but Q13 Fox News in Seattle, Washington, because they even though they have an idea, they really don't know. But they gave it their best shot....sort of.

This gifted cyber translator was able to break down a lot of very common teen emoji codes. For instance, a (hibiscus) flower emoji means "let's get some drugs. I love drugs."

A skull emoji pointing to a fire emoji means "I hope you die in a fire." And the frog emoji means "I'm telling you you're ugly by using this frog in text."  Read more...

Why Tinder tourists aren't actually the worst

Sitting across from my friend in my favourite coffee shop, I began reciting the story of yet another Tinder failure. This time, it was the tale of the Tinder tourist.

A Tinder tourist: Someone who uses Tinder when visiting a new city or town. For some, it's a way to enjoy fun and casual hookups during a short trip. But if you find yourself unwittingly embroiled in a fling with a Tinder tourist, it can be nothing short of infuriating.

I had unknowingly been talking to a Tinder tourist. And I didn't want to be a part of his plan to have an ephemeral fling while he was visiting London. After days of talking to him, he asked me to meet at a farmer's market in the middle of a weekday. When I told him I couldn't make the 40 minute journey across London because I was working, he was disappointed.

"Maybe this weekend?" I mooted as a compromise. It was then that he explained that he actually lives in Alaska, and was only in London until Wednesday. Cool. Message after message arrived in my inbox, each time suggesting another date during my working day. Read more...

The war between Vanity Fair and Trump intensifies

The plot thickens as the lengthy feud between Donald Trump and Vanity Fair rages on.

In the latest move, Graydon Carter, editor of the Condé Nast magazine, has decided not to attend the president's White House Correspondents Dinner, because he would really just rather go fishing.

According to The New York Times, the magazine is also pulling out of co-sponsoring the dinner’s exclusive after-party with Bloomberg L.P.

Carter explained the magazine has "...taken a break from the dinner in the past," and this year he's got hot plans to spend the weekend fishing in Connecticut. Read more...

Someone beat 'Resident Evil 7' on the hardest difficulty using only a knife

Resident Evil 7 is terrifying and difficult, which makes it a great game to try and play through as quickly as possible with as little fire power as possible.

Speedrunners have been posting their best times playing through the new Resident Evil game, reaching completion times nearing 90 minutes less than two weeks after the game's release. Twitch streamer and Youtuber Quizzle decided to ramp it up a notch and play the game using nothing but a knife.

"At the time, no one had done a knife-only playthrough on any difficulty level," he said. "No one actually knew if it was possible, so I gave it a shot on easy [difficulty] first then transitioned to madhouse. Most of my viewers wanted to see it so I gave it a shot!" Read more...

Snapchat's IPO reveals how much it cost to make a man disappear

You can't make 500 million friends without making a few enemies. So goes the tagline of the The Social Network, summing up the tension between Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his cofounder (and at one point, close friend) Eduardo Saverin, who got booted from the company on its way to global domination.

But Snap Inc., Facebook's foe with fewer friends, also has a similar character in its past: Reggie Brown, one of cofounders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy's classmates at Stanford where they originally built the app. Brown was apparently forced out of the company without equity—despite, according to Brown, coming up with the concept of the disappearing messaging app.  Read more...

We played 'Horizon: Zero Dawn' for 4 hours and found some really cool stuff

Horizon: Zero Dawn is a game of hunting robot dinosaurs, and occasionally riding on their backs or heads.

Whether or not you're sold on the concept, it looks really cool in actionHorizon is one of those open world sandbox game, which means you're running around this giant world — filled with robodinos — and using a variety of tools to do... whatever, really.

There's a story, of course. The game is set some significant amount of time after the world you and I know came crashing down. Nature reclaimed its rightful place, humanity devolved back to tribal living, and the machine relics of our former civilization somehow transformed into robots that look and act like prehistoric lizard-birds. This amazing PSA asks you to imagine being 260 weeks pregnant

Nine months of pregnancy is more than enough for most people. Now imagine being forced to carry a baby until it was six years old.

That’s the shocking premise of a satirical new PSA that was made to support a national paid family leave law. It features Lauren, a fictional paralegal in Denver, who is meant to be 240 weeks pregnant. (About 5 ½ years along, if you don’t feel like doing the math.) Yeeeeouch.

Obviously that’s not biologically possible — and thank goodness for that — but in this surreal scenario Lauren has chosen to stay pregnant because she and her husband don’t have any paid leave and can’t afford to take time off after the baby is born. So her best move is to delay the birth until she’s saved up enough vacation and sick days.  Read more...

Fake Bowling Green Massacre victims site links to the ACLU donor page

Bowling Green, Kentucky was just a regular city of 63,000 on Thursday morning. But by nightfall it had become the site of a made-up massacre, and by the morning that fake massacre was being lampooned across the internet and even had a fake donations site set up in its name.

"The Bowling Green Massacre Victims Fund" is a simple, one-page site that's just gray and dreary enough to maybe make a passing viewer believe it's a real thing. But it funnels all funds towards the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

The whole Bowling Green Massacre story started after Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway referred to a nonexistent attack in the city during an interview on Thursday night. Read more...

There will be Uber at the Super Bowl — but just barely

Patriots and Falcons fans will be able to use Uber to get to the Super Bowl this weekend — but it was a close call.

Houston, Texas, which will host the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI on Sunday, almost lost Uber ahead of the big game. Instead, the city and the ride-hailing company reached a compromise that kept Uber in the city through at least Feb. 5.

The compromise in December determined that Houston would continue to require a fingerprint check for drivers but eliminate requirements for driver drug testing and physicals before thousands of fans descended on the city in February.  Read more...

Why driving an electric hybrid is actually way better and less stressful than you think

Expectation vs. reality is a funny thing.

We get this idea in our heads about what’s going to happen — what could go wrong. But then when the time comes, it’s never nearly as bad as we think. Sometimes, it’s even better.

Take, for example, owning an electric hybrid car. These technological beauties are the cars of the future. But after relying on gas-only vehicles for so long, it can be scary to make the switch. What happens when you run out of battery? Or when you can’t find a charging station?

Read on to discover how the all-new Prius Prime from Toyota can put all your fears to rest — and exceed even your wildest expectations.       Read more...

An X-ray look inside the beauty of electric hybrid vehicles

There’s more to electric hybrids than what meets the eye.

On the outside, these cars are sleek and stylish — like aerodynamic works of art. But on the inside, there’s cutting-edge technology and smart design, a combination that is helping to reinvent the idea of what an automobile can be.

Electric hybrid vehicles have long been hailed as the future of the auto industry — and for good reason. By combining an internal combustion engine and a battery electric drive system, these energy-efficient cars help to reduce emissions and give fuel economy a much-needed bump.

By fluctuating between a gasoline engine and battery power, electric hybrids work to optimize fuel consumption. Rather than relying completely on the pump, these vehicles also have rechargeable batteries, which can be plugged into charging stations at home or on the road.     Read more...

A hacker redirected dead links in Trump tweets to brony videos

If you can stomach scrolling back through President Donald Trump's Twitter feed, you're in for a treat. Make it far enough and you'll stumble across this gem:

"@FranzThompson: @LOUISFANUCCHIIV Go vote and support @realDonaldTrump at http://t.co/9LnAKc0KGF" That sounds cool!!!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 12, 2013

From the attached video, the tweet makes it look like the 45th president of the United States is a fan of My Little Pony conventions — but as far as we know, he's not a "brony" in reality.

The video made its way to Trump's Twitter via a Belgian hacker, Inti De Ceukelaire. He's taken control of several domains Trump has tweeted out over the years by buying the expired URLs and redirecting them to humorous videos mocking Trump, The Verge reports.     Read more...

This is how millennials are saving money

There are a lot of misconceptions about millennials. Some people have pushed the false belief that millennials are lazy and self-centered — and like it that way. And, judging by some experts sharing their two-cents about this subject, are terrible with saving their money. I'd love to see a study carried out about the motivations behind the individuals and industries that continue to spread these rumors.

In reality, millennials are hard-working. They’re not as selfish as you would believe. And, they’re careful with their spending. It's the few that mess it up for the rest of us. If anything, they have challenges that previous generations haven’t had to face, such as making less money than previous generations. Read more...

Thoughtful dad sends flowers not to his wife, but to his dog

Whenever a loved one in your life is going through a hard time, it often feels like you are also going through that hard time and you would do anything to cheer them up.

This is exactly what caused a very sweet dad to send flowers home, because he knew his loved one was going through a rough time. His wife signed for the flowers, touched and grateful.

The only thing was...the flowers were not for her.

"So flowers were delivered today," his wife . "My husband is very good about sending random flowers to me. I thought 'oh isn't that nice!' ...then I read the card." Read more...

Trump administration begins altering EPA climate change websites

In his poem "The Hollow Men," T. S. Eliot famously wrote: "This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang, but a whimper." It seems the Trump administration may be taking a cue from this prose, potentially killing off climate change programs not with the flourish of announcements and speeches but with behind-the-scenes tinkering instead.

This is becoming clear thanks to scientists' careful tracking of the administration's websites and data centers. A report from the nonprofit Environmental Data and Governance Initiative (EDGI), which is closely tracking federal climate science websites under Trump, and first reported by Climate Central on Thursday, shows that there have already been many changes to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) websites related to climate change.  Read more...

No silly human, you may not take this cat's hard-earned money

Pets often don't seem aware of just how hard money is to come by.

Every day, owners have to put in long hours at work so they can put kibble into food bowls. And yet, pets become sad and sometimes even resentful of the fact that owners have to spend time away from home, away from playing with them and stroking them. It's an impossible catch-22.

But it looks like we have found at least one pet who does understand how valuable even a dollar can be. This adorable cat is dead set on protecting what it has earned, and even its human is not allowed to take it away from them.

Forget telepresence robots on wheels, Google wants telepresence drones

Drones can do one thing existing telepresence robots can't: fly up and down stairs.

This is one reason why Google thinks telepresence drones are a good idea, according to a U.S. patent discovered by Recode.

The patent, filed in August 2016 but made public on Thursday, describes a lightweight drone that could be used by remote workers to videoconference with colleagues indoors.

The patent claims the drone system could allow for a remote users to "feel as if they are present, at the same location as that of the second users."

A projection system on the drone could also let remote users project images and videos onto walls and table-top surfaces for their colleagues to see, further creating the illusion of in-person collaboration. Existing telepresence robots (many of which are just an iPad on wheels) don't allow for such collaborative two-way communication. Read more...

Tinder chairman hasn't taken any of his own profile advice

If you scroll through Tinder fast enough and over a long enough period of time, you’re bound to come across a famous person. You might even come across the co-founder and chairman of Tinder itself, eligible bachelor Sean Rad.

We know that as a famous person Rad has to maintain an air of professionalism, even on his own app. But there's a fine line between polished gentleman hustler and blank slate of nondescript okay-ness. Sean Rad's Tinder profile may have crossed that line.

"But he's the CEO, he should be an expert at Tinder!" you may or may not care to exclaim. To which we say, aye, but he is. He gave some great advice on setting up a profile to GQ a while back. He just can't seem to act on it.  Read more...
