J.K. Rowling has the best response to Trump's non-existent Sweden attack
The internet can't get enough of President Donald Trump's "last night in Sweden" remarks, including, of course, J.K. Rowling.
Never one to shy from a little fun at the expense of the U.S. president, theauthor joined in on Twitter's response to Trump's confusing reference to a terrorist attack that didn't actually happen.
'Overwatch,' but with cats (and a dog) returns for more
Meet Zarnya, Felinehardt, KI.T, Woofston, and Streetcat, the adorable kitty-cat versions of Overwatch tank heroes Zarya, Reinhardt, D.Va, Winston, and Roadhog. OK fine, Woofston is technically a dog. But Winston is technically a knockoff of Beast from the X-Men movies and comics.
Much like the last "Katsuwatch" video from YouTuber dillongoo, this video runs through each cat-ified hero's various "highlight intros" — the bit that plays when said hero wins Play of the Game. But where the last one focused on offense heroes, this one is all about the tanks.
If you're curious to see how closely these recreations line up with the real thing, check out the comparison video right here. Spoiler alert: It's pretty damn close. Read more...
The Lego Batman Movie is #1 in the U.S. for the second straight weekend, but that's not the big story.
Instead, eyes are on The Great Wall — a Zhang Yimou-directed blockbuster starring Matt Damon — which opened at #3 domestically, with an estimated $18.1 million at the box office. It's an underwhelming start for a movie said to be budgeted at $150 million, but U.S. ticket sales present an incomplete picture.
The Great Wall is already an international hit. It's amassed more than $170 million in China since it opened on Dec. 16, and its total non-U.S. gross — which, as of this weekend, includes 21 additional markets — amounts to an estimated $244.6 million. Read more...
Ex-Uber employee shares harrowing tale of sexism at the company
According to an essay by a former Uber engineer, the company has a big problem with sexism in the workplace.
Susan J. Fowler, now an engineer at Stripe, joined the ride-hailing company in 2015, but her experience quickly became "strange, fascinating, and slightly horrifying." In her account, posted Sunday, she alleges a clown car-worth of institutional sexism, HR incompetence and organizational disorder.
In response, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick said in a statement Sunday evening he had instructed the company's new chief human resources officer to conduct "an urgent investigation" into the allegations. Read more...
Watch a clever comedy duo imagine what fighting Trump IRL might be like
The Umbilical Brothers are a pair of physical comedians, who've been performing live on television (in their homeland of Australia and beyond) for 20 odd years.
Well, they just made their debut appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Friday night. And they didn't mess around.
Essentially, they staged an imaginary, cartoonish bunch-up between President Trump and Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Complete with jokes about tiny hands, foreign policy and plenty of cheeky innuendo.
That Britney Spears biopic is a travesty, and Twitter wants its 2 hours back
Britney Spears deserves better than this.
While no one expected Britney Ever After to be anything other than The Room of biopics, it seems the unauthorised Lifetime movie that aired Saturday night was so bad it shocked even the most unshockable viewers with its hilarious inaccuracies. In short, it was a shit show.
But just as every cloud has a silver lining, the dedicated Britney fans of Twitter made the most of their two-hour torture fest by commentating on the film's worst moments, for us all to enjoy.
From it's ridiculous casting, LOL dialogue (we're looking at you, Justin Timberlake impersonator, with your "bomb diggity" youth speak), and costume design atrocities — it seems this movie may replace Glitter as the go-to pop star biopic of choice, for hungover/still drunk people everywhere. Horrific harassment story is giving the internet a new reason to #DeleteUber
It's been less than a month since ride-share company Uber faced a heavy wave of backlash that led to the "#DeleteUber" hashtag and now, after the publication of an employee's allegations of sexual harassment and HR bumbling, the hashtag is burbling back up.
On Sunday, Susan J. Fowler posted about her experiences while at Uber and alleged a long list of institutional sexism, HR incompetence and organizational disorder and the story spread quickly across social media.
Specifically, it gave users a chance to resurrect "#DeleteUber" to take more shots at the tech company.
Goodbye forever @Uber. It's not me, it's you and your maligned moral judgment#deleteuber
Yep, the U.S. gave a 'Make Somalia Great Again' hat to the country's president
Somalia is one of the seven countries President Trump placed under a U.S. immigration ban recently.
So just imagine the grimaces when the newly-appointed President of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, received a "Make Somalia Great Again" hat from the U.S. Ambassador to Somalia, Stephen Schwartz.
The hat gifted to the president had a blue and white colourway (as opposed to the usual red), matching the Somalian flag.
Seems kind of inappropriate, what with the travel ban and all.

That’s clearly the perspective of Daigo Kusunoki, an engineer who loves to dance. The twin wristbands he’s showing off this week at the New York Toy Fair, called BeatMoovz by Dmet Products, are the product of that dual love affair.
Inside each soft-rubber BeatMoovz wristband is a Bluetooth radio and an accelerometer. Every time Kusunoki moved his wrists, a nearby JBL speaker emitted a beat. Each band is connected to the BeatMoovz app, which has a library of 400 different sounds. Wearers can assign different sounds or instruments to each band. Read more...
'Walking Dead' goes beyond Thunderdome in episode 10
This review contains spoilers forThe Walking DeadSeason 7, episode 10, titled "New Best Friends." To refresh your memory of where we left off, check out ourrecap of episode 9.
At last — Daryl and Carol are reunited, and it feels so good. Even if "New Best Friends" had been a terrible episode (which it wasn't — it was arguably one of the season's strongest to date), it still would've scored bonus points for bringing our two favorite lone wolves back together after way too many episodes apart.
And what made their reunion even better was how Daryl found out about Carol's safehouse in the first place — as part of Richard's plot to incite a war between the Kingdom and the Saviors by framing Carol for killing some of Negan's scouts. It was an ingenious plan to get Ezekiel angry enough to take action, but boy, did Richard choose exactly the wrong accomplice for that particular scheme. Even if Daryl hadn't known that it was Carol that Richard intended to use as a scapegoat, there's no way he would've condemned an innocent person to die as a pawn in the soldier's game. Read more...
Frugal person escapes burning bus, then returns to 'tap off' travel card, and fair enough
Public transport systems around the world require people to "tap off" their travel cards when exiting a bus or train, and forgetting to do so is a big (and expensive) headache.
But public transport investigators in Australia's Sydney were stunned to find that one of 22 passengers escaping a bus fire last September, went back to the flaming bus try and "tap off," according to Fairfax Media.
Guess the unnamed passenger really didn't want to pay that annoying A$4.50 (US$3.45) day rate, which is arguably the bane of all of Sydney's existence.
An English version of China's biggest taxi app is coming, but there's a small problem
China's top (and pretty much monopolist) taxi app, Didi Chuxing, is quietly trialing an English version.
The app, which doesn't even have an English listing in the App Store yet, started showing English translations to some users, according to Shanghai resident, Mathieu Bouchara.
'Homeland' recap: Quinn has a no good, very bad day
This recap contains spoilers forHomelandSeason 6, episode 5, "Casus Belli." Refresh your memory with ourrecap of episode 604.
After a slow start, the Homeland we know and love is back with Season 6's fifth episode, "Casus Belli," which means "an act or situation provoking or justifying war."
The act in question is the bomb in Sekou's (J. Mallory Cree) van, whose detonation in midtown Manhattan miraculously left only two people dead, Sekou being one of them. It seems the bomb went off so early that not very many people were at work yet — though the episode's assertion that the bomb decimated three blocks really makes it seem like more people should have died, even if it was early in the morning, but that's a small quibble in the world of TV dramas. App warns you when you enter an area where sex crimes have been committed
You're about to take a shortcut through a back alley when suddenly your phone beeps — a notification pops up warning you that a sex crime has been committed there.
That's what one prefecture in Japan is doing with its new "Mimamotchi" app.
The app, which uses GPS to track the user's locations, automatically sends information when users enter areas where sex crimes have been logged.
It is the first app in Japan designed to help protect young women and children from sexual predators, Fukuoka's prefectural police told the Asahi Shimbun. Read more...
India's only active volcano is back from the dead after 150 years
Barren Islands volcano, India's only active volcano, is reportedly spewing lava and ash after a gap of 150 years. It erupted for about four hours in January, scientists from the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) claimed.
The volcano is situated in Barren Islands in the Andaman & Nicobar archipelago. Some unsubstantiated reports even claim that it is South Asia's only active volcano.
Its first recorded eruption dates back to 1787. Since then, the volcano has erupted more than ten times, including the one this year. Read more...
Oppo promises to launch new smartphone camera tech next week
China's Oppo has a teaser ahead of this year's Mobile World Congress: The company plans to wow the world with a new smartphone camera technology called "5X."
There aren't many details in the press release we've gotten, and an actual device isn't even mentioned, but there's a lot of vague superlatives that describe it.
Apparently, the new tech is "the result of an extensive, year-long R&D process" and it will "give users unprecedented ability to capture highly detailed images." Furthermore, company VP Sky Li said this "breakthrough ... will change how the world perceives smartphone photography." Read more...
You have to play 'Horizon: Zero Dawn' if you own a PS4
I'm going to die beneath the metal claws of a rampaging Thunderjaw.
The mechanical T-Rex charges across the desert landscape as I pepper it with a hailstorm of seemingly ineffectual fire arrows. Human-sized pieces of machinery litter the dusty plateau where our deadly dance has played out, but even after all the damage I've inflicted... the great beast hasn't slowed.
It's almost finished, though. I can see it. There's only a sliver of health bar left. I just need to steer clear of its massive body — the only weapon it has left, but also the most potent — while burning fires finish the job. Read more...

The US wants to check Chinese visitors' social media profiles
The U.S. border control is seeking to check Chinese visitors' social media profiles.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) plans to publish a proposal asking travellers from China to disclose what social media platforms they use, and what their handles are, according to Politico.
Holders of business and visitor visas will be affected by the move — amounting to almost 3.6 million applicants per year, the proposal estimates.
However, travellers can choose not to disclose the information, and will still have their requests processed "without a negative interpretation or inference." Read more...
LG G6 will have dual 13-megapixel cameras on the back
LG is feeding us a steady diet of leaks and specs for its upcoming G6 flagship, scheduled to launch Feb. 26, a day ahead of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The company already told us about the phone's elongated screen and UI, and now, in a blog post on the company's Korean site, we've learned that the G6 will have dual, 13-megapixel rear cameras.
It appears that the phone will have a similar setup as last year's G5 — a regular camera sensor on the back will be coupled with a wide-angle sensor. But there's a big difference — while the G5's wide-angle sensor only had an 8-megapixel resolution (in contrast to the main, 16-megapixel sensor), now both sensors will have the same resolution, meaning you won't have to sacrifice photo quality to go wide-angle. Here's a bunch of politicians 'dancing' to Daft Punk, and you're welcome
When Daft Punk shook up the music world with their brand of French house music in the '90s, they were a revelation.
Two decades on, they're one of the most popular electronic dance music acts on the globe. That means their music is prone to being danced to by people who shouldn't dance. In public at least.

The results are chilling, to say the least. Read more...

India wants to make credit and debit cards obsolete for payments
Ever since India invalidated much of its cash, it has been encouraging its citizens to switch to mobile wallets and other epayment solutions. Today, it took another step in pushing its citizens to embark on the cashless payment solutions — but early boomers aren't going to like it.
The Indian government has launched BharatQR Code to enable people to pay for things they purchase without swiping their plastic cards. Instead, merchants can ask shoppers to scan a QR code and make payments directly from their bank account.
One of the biggest problem merchants and citizens faced in the aftermath of demonetization last November was the absence of non-cash payment systems. Read more...
Duvet ponchos are the cosy fashion trend for people who really, really love their bed
Getting out of your warm, cosy bed on those freezing, frosty mornings is truly agonising.
And once you're out of bed, it's nigh-on impossible to recreate that toasty feeling — save wearing every item of clothing you own.
British fashion house Mulberry has created a solution that could actually mimic the effect of staying in bed all day: a duvet poncho. And they're pretty chic — for a duvet, at least.

Surprise: John Oliver is pretty suspicious about Trump and Putin's relationship
Rumors and accusations have swirled for months around Donald Trump's curious relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. And though John Oliver has mentioned it throughout the campaign and the beginning of Trump's presidency, he has yet to really dive into it on Last Week Tonight

For the show's main topic, Oliver explains who Putin is, why Russia loves him and why Trump probably shouldn't. It's a rousing segment full of rock 'n roll acrobats, presidential techno songs and people sh*tting on the hoods of cars.

Josh Gad brings some serious star power for his latest grilling of Daisy Ridley
Poor Daisy Ridley.
While filming a remake of Murder on the Orient Express, she's been subjected to constant grilling from co-star Josh Gad about what secrets she knows about the new Star Wars films.
After she refused to tell Gad if her character from the current Star Wars saga films, Rey, is a Jedi, Gad then enlisted screen legend Judi Dench to pester Ridley into dropping some hints.
Which also failed.
So, Gad has gone back to the well one more time, and now he's unloading the big guns.
This time, he's enlisted a murderer's row of stars including Express co-stars Leslie Odom, Jr. (Aaron Burr from Hamilton's original cast), Lucy Boynton (Sing Street), and Penelope Cruz. Oh, and there's also Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and two guys working on Star Wars Episode IX, Colin Trevorrow (the director) and Derek Connolly (the screenwriter). Read more...
This egg inside another egg is a perfect YouTube specimen
Which came first: the chicken, the egg or the second egg?
Okay, we don't know, but we do know this: amid all the late-night clips and VEVO spam, there occasionally emerges a popular YouTube video that is just weird and cool.
Behold: the stunning 2017 film "Egg Inside an Egg."
The clip goes pretty much how you'd expect. A mysteriously large egg is opened to find — surprise! — another, smaller egg inside. When they crack open the second egg, there's just a yolk, although it is slightly paler than most yolks.
This egg-inside-egg phenomenon is called a counter-peristalsis contraction. Basically, it's when an egg that has already passed through the hen's oviduct gets sucked back up before it can finish developing, allowing another egg to develop around it. Read more...

Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti explain why ‘Billions’ Season 2 is more relevant than ever
When Billions first aired on TV in January 2016, the main takeaway was that in the hunt for power and money, you sometimes have to break a few rules. It was a Machiavellian world set on the stage of a more familiar Wall Street.
But that was way back when that world was just good TV. But fast forward to January 2017, when Donald Trump's presidency is surrounded with accusations of conflicts of interest at every turn.
Billions plays a zero-sum game between a power-hungry billionaire (Homeland star Damian Lewis) and an ethically questionable U.S. attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti). Read more...

There are certain things that humans — or enough loud people, anyway — respect as universal truths. Pizza is good. Nickelback? Bad. Wearing socks to bed is terrible and should be a crime.
The first two are absolutely inarguable, but, friends ... sometimes wearing socks to bed is nice. If you suffer from dry skin or are constantly cold, it can be even nicer.
First, sock haters, I ask you to think of your sleep cycle. If you struggle to fall asleep at night, socks in bed might be a godsend.
