Uber is now being accused of violating the privacy of their exes, politicians, and Beyonce

Uber's troublesome history with customer privacy issues took another hit on Monday, in the form of a lawsuit over allegations that Uber's employees spied on celebrities and former romantic partners.

Ward Spangenberg, a former forensic investigator for Uber, is suing the company for wrongful termination, age discrimination and defamation, according to court documents. The lawsuit was first reported by the Center for Investigative Reporting

Surprised Breitbart advertisers highlight the pitfalls of automated advertising

The Anti-Defamation League hasn't been shy about its condemnation of Breitbart News, an outlet it calls the "premiere website" for the "loose-knit group of white nationalists and unabashed anti-Semites and racists" it claims constitutes the so-called "alt-right" movement.

So it came as a bit of a shock recently when the Jewish rights group discovered that it happened to number among the site's advertisers.

The ADL wasn't the only one; As Breitbart chairman Steve Bannon's new White House gig brought renewed media attention to the agitative far-right site's less savory tendencies, Kellogg, Warby Parker, U.S. Bank and several other major brands also found that they had been unwittingly supporting it with their ad dollars. Woman accidentally buys unbelievably janky fake Christmas tree

And now, the #fail of a trend is making its way into the Christmas tree market.

Zoe McAllister of Glasgow shared a photo of the artificial Christmas tree she bought without peeking inside the box first – and it looked very different than she was expecting.

"EXPECTATIONS VS. REALITY!! I actually laughed at this 'tree' for about 15 minutes. Looks like I'm off to buy a new tree at the weekend 😂😂😂," she wrote on Facebook. Read more...

Why Twitter thinks Richard Spencer isn't offensive enough to be banned

When alt-right leader Richard Spencer's Twitter account was reinstated over the weekend after a month of suspension, there was an outcry from critics who decried Spencer's rhetoric as being "hate speech" but Twitter, apparently, disagreed.

Instead, Twitter claimed that it was about Spencer's use of multiple accounts. In a statement, the company said, "Our rules explicitly prohibit creating multiple accounts with overlapping uses. When we temporarily suspend multiple accounts for this violation, the account owner can designate one account for reinstatement." Read more...

How solar energy and mobile money are changing lives in rural Africa

The NASA satellite map of the world at night shows blazing networks of light across North America and Europe. But Africa remains the dark continent. Despite the United Nations' Millennium Development Goal of universal access to electricity by 2030, half of Africans are without power, most living in remote villages that are unlikely to be connected to the grid in the foreseeable future.

But now, thanks to falling prices for solar panels and increasing efficiency of LED lights and small appliances, rural Africans are obtaining electricity off the grid.

Off-grid electricity typically means a stand-alone solar home system or a microgrid (generally up to 100 kilowatts) built in the center of a community with distribution lines radiating out to houses, hospitals and stores. Microgrids are usually solar-powered, but are sometimes also fueled with diesel, micro-hydropower, wind or biomass. They often store electricity in batteries for later use. Read more...

Frustrated fashion student uses ASL to send professor a hidden rude message

Ah, finals week. Students' schedules are filled with final paper after final exam after final project, and professors can get away with assigning whatever the hell they want.

Lama Ali, a fashion design student in Virginia, couldn't resist letting her pettiness about that stressful reality make a subtle appearance in one of her final projects.

When her drawing teacher assigned her three finals, Ali subtly illustrated the phrase "you got me fucked up" in American Sign Language in one of her drawings.

To keep everyone on speaking terms through the New Year, you’ll need some help from your ride. Thankfully, ten major automakers are offering new models with Connected Car, an AT&T-powered feature that turns your car into a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. [1] Read more...

Some disturbed and festive Trekkie made a gingerbread USS Enterprise going down in a fiery crash

Why reindeer near the North Pole are shrinking

Reindeer have it rough, and not because Santa makes them fly around the globe.

In August, a lighting strike killed more than 300 of the animals in Norway, only a month after thousands of reindeer in Russia died from an anthrax epidemic. In 2013, around 61,000 reindeer starved to death on Russia's Yamal Peninsula after rare Arctic rains cut off their food supply.

Now scientists say reindeer are physically shrinking as climate change disrupts their diets of grasses, mosses and lichens.

Over the last 20 years, the weight of adult reindeer in Norway has declined by 12 percent, according to ecologists from the U.K.'s James Hutton Institute, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Read more...

Variations of the hashtag #UndiesOutForSam have been trending after a curious and frankly horrific article was published in Daily Mail Australia Sunday that criticised Australian TV personality Samantha Armytage for her choice of intimates.

Armytage was not sporting external undies à la Superman. Rather, she was out in public and her underwear was definitely beneath her clothes.

The Rams' coach just tied an NFL record, so the team fired him

The Los Angeles Rams fired head coach Jeff Fisher on Monday, a day after their ninth loss of the season.

The Rams struggled after their return to Los Angeles, where they played from 1946-1994 before shipping off to St. Louis. Going 4-9 and firing the head coach mid-season probably isn't what Los Angeles football fans were hoping for when the team moved back.

It's particularly bizarre, considering Fisher signed a contract extension last week.

But get this — Sunday's loss to the Falcons marked the 165th of Fisher's coaching career, tying him for the most career losses by an NFL coach. So firing him makes a lot of sense.  Read more...

Singing cartoon whale is the cutest send off ever for New Zealand PM, eh

UberPool is trying to speed up your shared rides

To prevent this frustrating scenario, the ride-hailing company announced some new features on Monday.

Airbnb thinks it's all set for Trump's America

When America's tech leaders visit President-elect Donald Trump Wednesday to kiss the ring, Airbnb's CEO will not be present.

But not because he wasn't invited. According to the company's head of global policy Chris Lehane, CEO Brian Chesky got the call, but will be out of the country on Dec. 14 due to a previous engagement.

The invitations to Trump's penthouse were seemingly "non-transferrable."

In Sydney on Tuesday, Lehane tried to put a good spin on what the future may hold for the share economy giant in Trump's America. He thinks their message will win the day. Everyone else's message? Um, maybe. Read more...

Concerns have been raised, in Sydney especially, about the affect Airbnb is having on housing affordability. Sydney is now in the top five cities for Airbnb users globally.

The company has alway maintained that its business model makes use of spare rooms or people's own homes while they're on vacation, while its critics have accused it of obscuring the number of purely commercial listings.  Read more...

Google reportedly scales down its self-driving car project

Google's quest to build a self-driving car has been one of the best-documented projects in tech history.

For years, Google has bombarded us with regular updates on the development of its self-driving tech, culminating in May 2014, when the company announced an actual product prototype: a self-driving car without a steering wheel or pedals.

Now, according to The Information's report Monday, those plans have been significantly scaled down.

Instead of a vehicle without a steering wheel, Alphabet — the parent company of Google since 2015 — is reportedly looking to partner with car makers to create cars that have self-driving tech on top of standard controls for humans.  Read more...

Nigerian bobsled team hopes to make a push at history

To quote the 1993 cult classic Cool Runnings — "Jamaica Nigeria we have a bobsled team."

Well, almost. Three women want to qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea as the first Nigerian bobsled team in history. Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga are also hoping to start a bobsled foundation for Africa.

Their efforts mirror Cool Runnings, the 1993 film loosely based on the first-ever Jamaican national bobsled team at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

"I actually started doing a little bit more research and learned that Nigeria did not have, in history, a sports team that represent bobsled," Adigun told Okay Africa. "So, I was like, 'Wow, that would be something that’d be very positive and very good for the country itself.'” Read more...

With the help of Google, an early investor that has donated $800,000 to date, Sandoval converted a defunct San Francisco city bus two years ago into a mobile shower unit for the homeless. Dakota Access protesters say major oil spill validates their concerns

Opponents of the Dakota Access Pipeline say a major oil spill in North Dakota "validates" their months-long struggle to stop pipeline construction near an important waterway.

The oil spill occurred just 150 miles outside the Dakota Access protest camps near Lake Oahe on the Standing Rock Sioux reservation.

State officials estimate that the Belle Fourche Pipeline in western North Dakota spewed more than 176,000 gallons of crude oil into a creek after electronic monitoring equipment failed to detect the leak.

Dakota Access protesters — who call themselves water protectors — have argued for months that plans to run the new pipeline beneath Lake Oahe, a large Missouri River reservoir, would jeopardize the region's water supplies and threaten sacred sites. Read more...

What to expect when you're expecting 'Rogue One': A totally spoiler-free review

This is all you really need to know: Rogue One is a hell of a good movie.

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden made history when he exposed government surveillance programs. Now, he has shed light on another need: Twitter product changes.

On Twitter’s live streaming app Periscope Tuesday, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey asked Snowden, “What would you like to see us do? What would you like to see us improve?”

Snowden discussed three product changes.

While Twitter is known for limiting messages to 140 characters, Snowden said he appreciated the work that the service has done to expand beyond that limit. For example, he found it frustrating that previously when Twitter users added a picture to a tweet, they lost 22 characters.  Read more...

Fighting french bulldogs can't force Yoda to surrender

Star Wars fans might be excited for the premiere of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story this Friday, but dogs couldn't care less.

That is, unless their owners have invested in a terrifying animated Yoda doll that threatens pets with lightsabers.

That's the case for Crockett and Tubbs, two French bulldogs forced to battle the Jedi Master.

Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson is, strangely, the most pro-climate Trump nominee

The nomination of ExxonMobil Corp. CEO Rex Tillerson to be secretary of state is being roundly pilloried by environmentalists, who see him as the human embodiment of a barrel of crude oil.

"Picking Rex Tillerson as for secretary of state makes Big Oil the face of foreign policy and a mockery of U.S. climate leadership," Environment America’s executive director Margie Alt said in a statement.

Yet compared to other Trump cabinet nominees, such as climate deniers Scott Pruitt and Rick Perry, who, if confirmed, would lead the EPA and Energy Department, respectively, Tillerson almost seems like a liberal on the climate issue.  Read more...

How a pair of leather trousers reduced the government into a bunch of 'Mean Girls'

LONDON — Never mind Brexit and Britain's economic future, it's a pair of designer trousers worn by the UK Prime Minister Theresa May and the childish spat that followed that's currently dominating headlines.

The saga — which has been dubbed #trousergate — may sound entertaining, but it risks undermining the credibility of women in UK politics.

Theresa May — the second ever female British prime minister — is currently at the helm of mothership Britannia as it veers away from the European Union and towards triggering Article 50, because, in May's own words, "Brexit means Brexit."

She has approached her entire political career with steely determination. But somehow she is now embroiled in an almighty row after she did something unconscionable — she wore a pair of distinctive trousers while doing a photoshoot for a newspaper interview. Read more...

Every bandwagon Warriors fan should read this Twitter account

Before they became unfair, before Steph Curry happened, before that 2015 championship happened, before the days of "full squad" and "the coco," the Golden State Warriors sucked.

Like, they truly, truly, truly sucked. Now one longtime fan is making sure all that suckage doesn't get lost amid the hoopla over the hoops world's current darlings.

Up until just a few years ago, the Warriors were known for dismal records, blown draft choices and all-around incompetence — not for creating basketball magic. They reached the playoffs just once between 1994 and 2013. They had an ugly color scheme and a weird blue mascot called Thunder.  Read more...

Satanic Temple stands up to Ohio's heartbeat bill

Say what you will about Satan, but the Satanic Temple has slowly morphed into one of America's most progressive religions.

Earlier this week, the group's leader, Lucien Graves, released a statement announcing that the Satanic Temple was religiously exempt from Ohio's proposed Heartbeat Bill. The bill, which was passed by the state's legislature but has yet to be signed by Governor John Kasich, would ban all abortions after six weeks.

Pro-choice advocates are concerned that the Heartbeat Bill is both unconstitutional and would put many women seeking abortions at great risk.  Read more...

Denzel Washington shares thoughts about journalism and fake news

Denzel Washington is making the rounds discussing his latest movie Fences, but at the Washington D.C. premiere of the film he took some time on the red carpet to revisit a topic absent from the film: the media.

The Academy Award-winning actor (and former journalism student at Fordham University) discussed the state of news today and, in the process, spit some real truths about the "fake news" epidemic we  find ourselves swimming through.

"If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you do read it, you're misinformed," Washington said in response to a question regarding a fake news story about the actor's political leanings before the election.  Read more...

Tinder just became your new favourite party game

LONDON — Move aside Monopoly. And charades for that matter. The game everyone will be playing this party season is Tinder. Yes, Tinder.

Tinder just announced the launch of its app on Apple TV, which means you can now bring your swiping to an Apple TV screen and enjoy it with friends. It's the dating site's first move away from mobile devices in an effort to make the app a more collaborative experience. And by 'collaborative', we mean PARTY

Tinder on Apple TV is a stripped back version of the iOS app we've all grown so fond of — and it focuses on the addictive and fun feature that's become synonymous with the app's name — swiping. Tinder is dubbing the TV app's main focus the "party swipe" — which it describes as a "fun activity with friends". Read more...

Colorado sold an absurd amount of weed in 2016

Colorado's cannabis enthusiasts are celebrating after a milestone was announced on Monday.

In the first 10 months of 2016, the state sold more than $1 billion of recreational and medical cannabis and cannabis-related products, according to data released by the state's Department of Revenue. That is a monstrous amount of weed.

The record number is up from 2015's total annual marijuana revenue of $996 million.

Industry attorney Vincente Sederberg told the Cannabist that he believes sales will cross $1.3 billion in 2016. Read more...
