A member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir just resigned over Trump inauguration gig

First Elton Jonn unequivocally said no. Then the Rockettes finally got a hall pass to pull out. Then, as the hunt for talent at Donald Trump's inauguration got more desperate, reports surfaced that bookers were being offered ambassadorships to haul in big names.

None were forthcoming. But at least the January event had teenage classical singer Jackie Evancho and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir lined up.

Now, it looks like even the latter isn't a safe bet.

A member of the choir, Jan Chamberlin, announced Thursday on Facebook that she was quitting the group over its decision to play the event, saying that it would be an endorsement of "tyranny and fascism." Read more...

Sikh NYPD officers finally allowed to wear turbans in 'major change' to uniform policy

The New York Police Department is allowing Sikh officers to wear turbans instead of traditional caps, and grow their beards up to half an inch long for religious reasons, Police Commissioner James O'Neill announced Wednesday.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony for new recruits at Madison Square Garden, O'Neil said there were some 160 Sikh officers that could benefit from the new rules.

In the past, Sikh officers had to wear a patka (a turban worn by members of the Sikh faith to exhibit honor, courage and piety) under a cap and also weren't allowed any beard growth above 1 millimeter, as they interfered with gas masks, the Associated Press reports. Now, as long as they get approval, they can proudly wear a navy blue turban with the NYPD insignia attached. Read more...

An Unforgettable Year

Well, 2016 has been a year. From tear gas in parliament to super-human athletic feats, this year had its fair share of big moments, to say nothing of the election of Donald Trump. Here's to seeing 2016 out, and keeping our fingers crossed for 2017.

Our absurd political reality summed up in one tweet

Donald Trump is back to fanning the flames of his love affair with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

In a tweet (with no spelling mistakes!), Trump praised Putin's decision to wait on expelling any U.S. diplomats from Russia in retaliation to President Barack Obama's sanctions announced Thursday.

Great move on delay (by V. Putin) - I always knew he was very smart!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 30, 2016

The Russian foreign minister had made it very clear the country would not take Obama's decision lying down, but then Putin stepped in and told everyone to calm down and wait for Trump's arrival in three short weeks. Read more...

The harrowing tale of Ryan Seacrest getting stuck in a Times Square elevator

Ryan Seacrest, a man who wants nothing more than to make New Year's Eve a little more rockin', was cruelly victimized by the very cruel year he's trying to usher us out of in cloud of confetti.

Yes, 2016, the first unit of time to become sentient and actively plot the destruction of all humanity, trapped Seacrest in an elevator in Times Square a mere day before hosting Rockin' New Year's Eve. In fact, he was under the very crystal ball that will drop and deliver us into 2017's probable continuation of misery.

Uber says there will be 'no surprises' with fares on New Year's Eve

Math can be difficult. Just ask Facebook

That being so, Uber has a gift for you this New Year's Eve. No, it's not free rides. The holiday is one of Uber's busiest, and therefore most-lucrative, nights of the year.

Instead, as part of Uber's annual tip sheet to attempt to ease the onslaught of hate on surge pricing via social media, Uber recounted that the app's "upfront fares" feature will offer you "no surprises."

Expect to see less tweets with screenshots like this:

13 people who had a great 2016 (who you can actually be happy for)

Unless you've been living under a rock, everyone knows that 2016 has been the hottest of absolute hot trash. That said? There've been a handful of people who actually did have a pretty decent 2016—who are not Donald Trump—who collectively, we can genuinely be happy for.

In no particular order, they are:

1. Gucci Mane

The Atlanta rapper and East Atlanta Santa got out of jail this year looking great—if not different enough to inspire a conspiracy theory that he was a clone. He got his life together, dropped some new songs, and celebrated an engagement to long-time girlfriend Keyisha Kaoir at an Atlanta Hawks game. As Guwop himself would put it: BURRRR, indeed. What we do and don't know about Russia's interference in the presidential election

On Thursday, the U.S. government formally retaliated against Russia for allegedly interfering with the U.S. presidential election.

The Obama administration's actions represent one of the most aggressive responses to a cyberattack in the history of the United States.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security issued a joint report formally accusing Russian intelligence operatives of gaining access to a “U.S. political party"—presumably the Democratic National Committee.

Along with the release of the report, the Obama administration imposed further sanctions against Russia and expelled 35 Russian diplomats from the country. Read more...

California is making it much harder to use your smartphone while driving

It's time to use that Amazon gift card for a phone mount for your car — California is cracking down.

Starting Sunday a new law is making it even harder to use your phone in the car. Throughout the state you already can't text, scroll around, click or look at messages on your phone while driving, and we've been long trained to never bring our phones to our ears while talking.

But starting Jan. 1 2017, you can't even have your phone in your hand or out to click or swipe something. It will have to be mounted to your windshield or dashboard — only then can you tap your screen to make sure that that new Google Maps route delivers you out of traffic hell. Read more...

Obama calling a last minute meeting to save Obamacare

Just because 2017 is the year Donald Trump takes over the White House doesn't mean President Barack Obama doesn't get to squeeze as much as possible out of his last few weeks in office.

Obama is, in fact, jumping into the new year with a meeting Wednesday with congressional Democrats. The purpose of this gathering? To figure out how to save Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), from getting annihilated by Trump and Republican lawmakers.

Obama will be back in Washington, D.C., Wednesday to meet with House and Senate Democrats, according to an invitation reportedly sent to members Friday. It's supposed to be a strategy session on how to stop Republicans from gutting the law without a solid replacement health care plan. Read more...

2016 is the year that just won't quit. Literally.

In the nick of time, we're getting just what we needed: more of 2016.

To keep this relentless year going, we get to enjoy an extra second, known as a leap second, on Saturday Dec. 31.

The extra time is all about syncing the earth's rotation with the world's atomic clocks. Since it doesn't take a perfect 24 hours for the planet to rotate on its axis, every few years we add a leap second. The earth's rotation is actually slowing down, even if just a bit.

The extra second, which was last added in June 2015, gets added onto Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) at 11:59:59 p.m. on Dec. 31. So instead of moving along to the first second of Jan. 1 we'll have 11:59:60 p.m. to celebrate this year. Read more...

How livestreaming dominated 2016

In June, House Democrats live streamed a sit-in to protest the Republican majority's inaction on gun control.

But to the general public, the House floor footage was only available on social media, with even CSPAN broadcasting Periscope feeds.

That moment in itself was yet another indicator that live streaming is the future. The genre has grown in popularity over the last year, with many increasingly jumping in the space in hopes of becoming the go-to platform for live programming.

Digital video giants — including  YouTube, Facebook and Instagram — have made livestreaming a priority as users increasingly utilize the format. More and more apps — such as musical.ly's sister app live.ly — have popped up in hopes of becoming as popular as Snapchat. Read more...

7 tech resolutions you should make in 2017, and how to keep them

Each year, our phones, social media accounts, laptops, smart assistants, fitness trackers and other tech somehow swallow up even more of our time.

For the new year, here are a handful of resolutions that aim to improve our relationship to the technology that rules our lives:

1. Start taking cybersecurity seriously

2016 was the year personal cybersecurity came to the forefront. In what was described as the worst hack ever, more than 500 million Yahoo email accounts were leaked.

Cybercriminals created a gigantic bot net built from insecure "Internet of Things" devices (like web-connected thermostats and coffee makers) that brought down major websites across the internet. Even the Democratic National Committee was compromisedRead more...

Can an app change human behavior? This behavioral economics professor is banking on it

Whether personal or professional, change is hard. And the cumulative data is not on our side.

Take something obviously detrimental, like smoking. A mere 4% to 7% of people successfully quit without the aid of medication or outside help. Even experiencing a traumatic event — like the death of a loved one or being diagnosed with cancer — only leads to a 20% success rate.

Not to be a killjoy, but as the Washington Post found, roughly 25% of New Year resolutions fall apart within the first two weeks. And even when it comes to our work — where money’s on the line — “70% of [management-led] transformation efforts fail.”  Read more...

Trump says Happy New Year in the most Trump way

President-elect Donald Trump tweeted his New Year's wishes on Saturday morning, and they do not disappoint. Choosing to steer clear of a neutral, hopeful message for the future, Trump instead sent a tauntingly boastful signal to his enemies.

Presumably the tweet was also directed at his vanquished rival for the presidency, Hillary Clinton, who won the popular vote by nearly 3 million but lost in the Electoral College.

One person that may not be on Trump's enemies list, but which is on such a roster among most Congressional Republicans as well as President Obama, is Russian President Vladimir Putin.  Read more...

How to never touch anyone ever again

Physical contact? On one hand, it's a vital form of human communication. On the other, it's terrible.

Touching other people is one of humankind's greatest fallacies. We all know touching people exposes us to germs, maybe diseases and definitely weird sweat, but we do it anyway. This is f*cking ridiculous.

Well, it's time to slip on your latex gloves and take a stand. Your gross body is your own, and it doesn't have to touch other gross bodies if it doesn't want to.

If you love someone? Stay away from them. If you hate them, please do the same. Here's how. Read more...

From Kimye vs. Taylor to Kimye vs. Bette Midler: The best celebrity feuds of 2016

For a lot of us, famous and normals alike, 2016 was a narrative we would like to be excluded from and that we never asked to be a part of.

But if nothing else, it was a great year for celebrity gossip. Thanks to social media, egos and impulse control had a banner year — for better and most certainly for worse. Here are the best celebrity feuds of a very petty year.

6. Selena Gomez vs. Justin Bieber

China announces a 'game-changing' step for elephant conservation

China, the world's largest market for ivory, announced this week that it will shut down its trade in such goods by the end of 2017. This will close down the world's largest commercial ivory market, and could help elephant populations stabilize and recover in Africa.

The decision to close down its domestic commercial elephant ivory trade is being hailed as a potentially transformative step toward protecting Africa's elephants, which are being slaughtered for their valuable tusks that are made of ivory.

“This is a game changer for Africa’s elephants,” said Aili Kang, the executive director for Asia at the Wildlife Conservation Society, in a statement. "I am very proud of my country for showing this leadership that will help ensure that elephants have a fighting chance to beat extinction." Read more...

Ronda Rousey lost her first fight in more than a year in just 48 seconds

After more than a year of anticipation, the fate of the most famous UFC fighter to date, Ronda Rousey, was decided in just 48 seconds on Friday.

Brazilian fighter Amanda Nunes defended her women's bantamweight champion title by dispatching Rousey with a vicious flurry of strikes in the first round, leaving no doubt about the end of Rousey's long reign as the UFC's top female fighter.

The defeat followed weeks of promotional appearances leading up to the fight, during which Rousey refused to address the media and would only stick around long enough for the public to get a glimpse of her newly ripped physique. Her fighting form, deadly serious scowls and complete silence, led many UFC watchers to wonder if the world was about to see a new version of Rousey, one who had learned from her shocking loss at the boxing-centric hands of Holly Holm in November 2015. Snapchat's 10 most popular lenses of 2016

Snapchat is insanely powerful. Not only has it changed Facebook (for better or worse), it has popularized the term "vomiting rainbow" and transformed selfies.

Just over a year ago, Snapchat introduced lenses, a feature that recognizes objects such as faces and overlays them with animated filters. It's one of the app's most addictive features in part because the options change daily.

More than 150 million people every day open the app to see what they can become. Everyone from President Barack Obama to Kim Kardashian have sported a flower crown this year.  Read more...
