Carrie Fisher's memory will not not only live on as the indomitable Princess Leia, an outspoken advocate for people with mental illness, and a woman with wicked sense of humor — she also leaves behind a salty career on stage.

Never one to hide from her history or keep her past private, Fisher debuted a one-woman show in 2006 based on her memoir, both called Wishful Drinking

Marine father gives his daughter a pride flag for Christmas, along with a beautiful surprise

Christmas 2016 was apparently one long giant, heartwarming sob-fest.

Twitter user @SatanKotah, otherwise known as Dakotah, asked her father for a gay pride flag this year. Not only did she receive the flag, she also received a genuinely sincere, moving response from her father, a United States Marine.

His gift of a flag came with a special note.

"When I saw that a gay pride flag was on your list, at first I thought it was an odd request. But after thinking about it, I think I know why. I reckon that you feel that everyone else in the family, except grandma, has a flag that represents someone we were/are a part of. I have the Marine Corps, Grandpa and Mom have the navy, and Darr has the army. So it makes sense that you would want a flag to represent something you are a part of. I present you with this flag, to display how you would like. In the spring, when I hang the flags up, I would be proud to hang yours up." Read more...

Princess no more: How some fans prefer to remember Carrie Fisher

Everyone remembers Carrie Fisher from her Princess Leia days, but it was her role as General Organa that some fans cherish most.

Toronto-based writer Anne Thériault made her case on Twitter today shortly after hearing of the Star Wars icon's death. For her role in The Force Awakens, Fisher was neither young nor traditionally Hollywood "sexy."

She was fierce, mature and dedicated to justice — qualities we don't typically see in our female stars.

For the General: How Carrie Fisher gave us the Force we'll need in 2017

In the end, she left us with a word: hope.

That word — which Carrie Fisher said first in the original Star Wars (1977) in her "help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi" speech — is such a powerful statement of what the film is all about that in 1981, George Lucas renamed the whole damn movie in its honor.

Her line reading, easily the most repeated (and probably the most memed) line in all of Star Wars, is what had won Fisher the role in the first place. It literally gave the world A New Hope.

And it was to that one word that Gareth Edwards just returned in the latest Star Wars blockbuster, Rogue One. In the movie — spoiler alert for the 4 or 5 fans who haven't seen it yet — a lookalike CGI version of Leia is seen uttering the word, clipped from Fisher's line reading. She also gets the very final line of thanks in the credits.  Read more...

Posting pictures of your kids on Facebook? Think twice.

You might think it's cute to snap a photo of your toddler running around in a playground or having a temper tantrum, and then posting it on social media.

But did you ever think it might be a mistake, or even illegal?

The French government earlier this year warned parents to stop posting images of their children on social media networks.

Under France's rigorous privacy laws, parents could face penalties of up to a year in prison and a fine of €45,000 ($46,456) if convicted of publicising intimate details of their children without their consent.

This new legality is powerful food for thought for parenting in the Facebook era.  Read more...

Ad branded discriminatory for its 'negative stereotype of husbands'

The dumb, lazy husband figure has long been a fixture of both pop culture — think Homer Simpson and Phil Dunphy of Modern Family — and advertising. But not anymore.

Australia's Advertising Standards Board (ABS) has ruled against an advertisement from a pest control company, saying it "features a negative stereotype of husbands," according to a recent determination

The radio ad by Allpest, shows a woman calling the company and asking what kind of pests they get rid of, including the line "what about my husband?"

Acting on a single complaint that the ad was a case of gender discrimination, the majority of the board "felt that community standards in this area have changed, and that this style of humour was no longer acceptable."  Read more...

There is no right way to mourn celebrities on the internet

My grandmother's funeral was quiet. I was young, so I can recall only a sliver of that day in Melbourne, but I do remember the silence.

In places like Australia, the public tradition of mourning is largely that of Anglo-Saxon stoicism. My grandmother was neither British nor Christian, but what I remember as the thorough decorum of her passing formed my idea of "proper mourning."

Social media put an end to all that. On Twitter and Facebook the practice is loud. It's noisy and decadent. Even obnoxious.

In a year marked by the worst of everything, the march of celebrity death was a horribly steady and repetitive drumbeat.  Read more...

Lyft data highlights the most popular destinations of 2016

Lyft is closing out a busy year for the ride-hailing industry by crowning the top destinations of 2016. For the second annual "Lyftie Awards," the startup revealed Wednesday winners of the most visited locations, including restaurants, bars, hotels, transit stops and event spaces, by its passengers.

The data highlights one of Lyft's regulatory victories in 2016: Approval to pick up and drop off passengers at more airports. While last year transit stops such as bus stops and train stations were the number one drop-off category, airports took the top spot this year.  Read more...

Lyft's head of marketing on what to expect in 2017

When you think of the ride-hailing industry in the U.S., two names should come to mind. But while Uber boasts name recognition for starting its own line of "Uber for" startups and a market valuation of a $68 billion, Lyft is the smaller company that claims to be quite satisfied with its place and trajectory.

How do you market an underdog? It helps when Uber is almost constantly fighting public relations battles, allowing Lyft to position itself as the warm and fuzzy alternative. In particular, Lyft emphasizes a friendly and supportive approach to both its passengers and its drivers. That's why the company touted new partnerships with Starbucks and Anheuser-Busch, for example, this year. Earlier this month, Lyft held a "Driver Appreciation Day," where the company matched tips for its drivers.   Read more...

This 13-foot-tall mechanical suit looks like something straight out of a sci-fi film

South Korean engineers have created the robot straight out of every sci-fi buff's dream: a walking, working mechanical suit that you can ride in and control.

Hankook Mirae Technology showed off a working prototype of its 4 meter (13 foot) tall robot on Tuesday, phys.org reports.

Image: vitaly bulgarov

The robot, which looks like the fictional AMP suit from Avatar, mirrors the movement of the operator's arms.

Like Avatar's AMP suit, which allowed humans to battle in the toxic air of Pandora, Hankook's real-life version is also meant to enable humans to work in "extreme hazardous areas," the company said. Read more...

Donald Trump thanked someone and you'll never guess who

Don't worry about thanking Donald Trump for anything...ever. He's got it covered.

The president-elect has been having a nice, chat with himself on Twitter since Monday about the positive impact he's had on the U.S. Consumer Confidence Index for the month of December.

Finally, Trump decided it was high time he gave himself major props and revived his "Thank You" tour to give himself an ironic, "Thanks Donald!"

Naturally, Twitter users collectively sighed.

On Dec. 26, Trump kicked off his self-praise by announcing the world was "gloomy" before he won. Luckily he has restored hope to the country's economy, as he claimed the market is up nearly 10 percent. Read more...

Snake hanging out in someone's toilet is a real, living nightmare

There are few things worse than finding a huge snake lurking in your toilet, but hey, at least this one isn't poisonous.

Animal rescue workers successfully relocated a rat snake from a toilet in Khon Kaen, Thailand, on Monday. After slipping a snare over the snake, it took two rescue workers to unhinge the stubborn snake from the toilet's plumbing.

According to the video's description on YouTube, the snake was released the next day.

Today, Apple sent every Apple Watch owner in the world a push notification announcing the "Ring in the New Year Challenge" — yet another reminder that every January should be spent exercising the last year's woes (and surplus poundage) away.

It's a simple concept: starting Jan. 2, the Challenge begins. LG's 'necklace' surround sound speaker is as dorky as wearables get

CES is right around the corner and some tech companies, like LG, just couldn't wait to announce some of the new gadgets they'll be showing off.

Take LG's levitating speaker. Is it useful or just a pretty gimmick? Who cares?! It hovers. LG's Tone Studio portable surround sound speaker for your neck, however, looks pretty silly.

LG says the Tone Studio has four speakers to provide its wearer a "personal surround sound experience" that mimics the feeling of being in a theater.

The neck speaker also has a Hi-Fi DAC to enhance audio quality and a "Dual Play" mode that lets you connect two of the wearable speakers together for a synced neck-worn sound experience. #Facepalm. Read more...

Giant Trump-rooster statue appears in China in case you forgot about Trump for one second

Donald Trump is like a rooster in many ways. He has a tousle of red-orange hair at the top of his head, his orange coloring is attention grabbing and he wakes us all up at sunrise every morning with tweets about how Saturday Night Live is bad.

An artist in China, which will celebrate the Year of the Rooster in 2017, observed the connection between Trump and the bird and built a huge Trump-rooster statue in front of a shopping mall.

The statue was commissioned by the mall's owners and miniature versions of it are reportedly being sold inside and on the Chinese ecommerce site Taobao. Read more...

Here's what happens when you light 10,000 sparklers at once

Lighting up sparklers as a kid is a joy, but once you hit the age of 12 it just doesn't provide enough firepower to be very entertaining.

While most people will reach for some more impressive fireworks, YouTuber Slivki Show decided to gather 10,000 sparklers, pack them together and light them up as if they were one massive sparkler.

Obviously, don't try this at home because you'll probably start a fire which will kill someone and then you'll feel bad for the rest of your life. Just watch it on YouTube.

People are trolling a French mayor after he named a road 'Rue de Brexit'

A pro-Brexit mayor of a French town has proposed to name a street "Rue de Brexit" in a reference to Britain's vote to leave the EU, but the joke has backfired.

Julian Sanchez, 33, a rising star in Marine Le Pen's National Front party, announced that the city council of Beaucaire in southern France had backed his proposal with a 23 to 9 vote last week.

He described it on Twitter as an “homage to the decision of the sovereign British people”:

In honor of 2016 coming to a close, this week on the MashReads Podcast we reflect on our favorite books of 2016. Join us as we talk about the best new books from 2016, the favorite things we've read this year, books that surprised us and more.

  • Aliza recommends rereading Harry Potter. "Rereading it as an adult, I got so much out of it. I love that community."

  • Peter recommends BoJack Horseman. "It's so poignant and fraught and existentially despairing at the same time as being really ludicrously funny. It deserves a lot more credit than it's been given."

  • MJ has a bunch of micro recommendations including Chance the Rapper and Michelle Obama. "[Obama] is beautiful, so smart, she's friends with Beyonce, she's inspiring. She got me through 2016." Cure your back-to-work blues with a good old-fashioned live eagle birth

There are two types of people in the world: those who are trying to catch up on work after the holiday break, and those who would rather watch some eagles get born.

Take a moment to consider which type you are and then be honest with yourself and watch the eagle video.

A live video of the eggs is being broadcast on Facebook by Fox 13 Tampa Bay. The eggs were laid in late November and are being incubated by their mother named Harriet and father less-creatively named M15.

This video has it all: eagles, eggs, a big nest, the fact that it is not the thing your boss said they wanted by the end of the day — what more could you possibly want? Read more...

Twitter users know the real reason Trump Tower was evacuated

Authorities don't play around when it comes to Donald Trump's gilded haven.

On Tuesday afternoon, Trump Tower in New York City was evacuated after a suspicious, unattended package was discovered in the lobby. However, once police arrived on the scene, it was determined the bag, described as a yellow backpack, was filled with children's toys.

Yes, children's toys.

Though the evacuation was brief, it caused a great deal of panic and commotion in the building and surrounding area.

Twitter user cielo_celest, who was inside the tower at the time of evacuation, posted a video that shows officers yelling "Go! Go!" and ushering people out of the building. Read more...

Look out, Amazon: Another ecommerce giant is looming in home entertainment

In business as in life, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Alibaba, Amazon's China-based ecommerce rival, is planning to spend more than $7 billion on its entertainment division over the next three years, according to a memo obtained by Reuters.

The move would add yet another player to what has become a crowded and pricey entertainment industry that includes traditional movie studios and TV networks as well as newer entrants like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, with major players like Facebook, Google and Apple also waiting in the wings.

Amazon has already spent billions of dollars on music and TV content despite the company's core businesses revolving around ecommerce and cloud computing. Still, Amazon has built up a considerable video operation that is included with its Prime membership — one that is growing as fast or faster than any other video service.  Read more...

The nation reaffirmed its plan to send China's first lander to the red planet by 2020 in a white paper released by the Chinese government this week. The new paper lays out the nation's ambitious plans to explore the solar system with a variety of missions by the end of the decade.

If successful, the Mars mission would make China the second country to successfully soft-land a probe on Mars.

This horrible tale of a pantless plane passenger will leave you in tears

No one is immune from sharing a flight with an absolutely horrendous passenger.

Getting locked in a pressurized tube flying 500 miles an hour at 30,000 feet above the earth just seems to bring the worst out in some people.

Actor, comedian and all around hilarious person Kumail Nanjiani shared a recent experience he had with an unruly passenger on Twitter on Wednesday. While there are plenty of offensive things you can do on a plane, taking off your pants and spreading your legs for all to see your grundle may top the list.

'YouTuber' is a real word now because the Oxford English Dictionary says so

The Oxford English Dictionary has given YouTubers some career validation.

"YouTuber" is among the 500 or so new words — including "Brexit" and "hackathon" — added to the OED this month.

The dictionary defines the term as "A frequent user of the video-sharing website YouTube, especially someone who produces and appears in videos on the site."

The word dates back to 2006, and stems from "the proprietary name of the video-sharing website," aka Google-owned video platform YouTube.
