Delight in the old-timey wonder of Sesame Street's holiday special

The snow tumbles down on Muppets in top hats as a mustachioed Cookie Monster offers a Santa'd Jim Gaffigan a chocolate chip cookie. This is the scene on set as Sesame Street shoots its first holiday special in 10 years.

"Once Upon a Sesame Street Christmas" is a Dickensian tale told through a furry lens of children's television. Much of the special takes place in an old-timey Sesame Street populated by the ancestors of the street's familiar, fuzzy faces.

Set designer David Gallo took modern Sesame Street back to the 19th century with sepia tones, ivy-covered iron gates and laundry dangling by clothespins over the familiar cobblestone. The characters themselves underwent their own period makeovers, trading their regular clothes and monster fur for dashing, hand-sewed tweed outerwear and exaggerated facial hair.  Read more...

Amazon blitzes the skies for speedy holiday deliveries

In 2016, Amazon might be the closest thing we have to Santa Claus.

Amazon wants customers to get their holiday gifts on time so much, it's leased a fleet of 40 jets and packed them with orders to be shipped around the United States, according to Reuters.

The company is hellbent on flinging orders to the doorsteps of Prime customers as fast as humanly possible. Amazon promises the estimated 35-50 million U.S. members of its Prime service that customers will get their packages within two days, but really it wants those customers to get their packages even more quickly whenever possible. Unlike most airplanes full of packages, Amazon-leased planes reportedly don't do stopovers, so they spend more time getting where they need to go. They also take off much later than most planes with similar missions, which allows them to depart with items ordered just before their customers drift off to sleep. Read more...

LeBron James is also king of dancing like no one is watching

LeBron James may have won an NBA Finals MVP award in June, but his performance in the past two weeks is worthy of another, more prestigious award — MVP of Dancing Like Nobody's Watching.

Someone spotted the Cleveland Cavaliers star busting out some very impressive dance moves on his way to the locker room at an as-yet-unidentified game, barely a week after he was absolutely vibing out to Kendrick Lamar at the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ceremony.

Stuck cat makes an extremely daring escape from the top of a palm tree

When a fire department attempted to rescue a cat out from a very tall palm tree, the cat wanted to show it didn't need their help. It is an independent cat.

From very high up, it leapt to the ground and miraculously landed unharmed.

You can see the firemen try to grab the cat after it landed, but somehow it still had the energy to sprint away. It is its own cat. It doesn't need you, fire department.

An A-list celeb has finally offered to perform at Trump’s inauguration

The struggle has proved to be oh so real for President-elect Donald Trump as he frantically searches for celebrities to perform at his inauguration on January 20.

Though Trump has been shut down by some big names like Elton John, things began to look up on Friday, when one bold and talented A-list celebrity straight-up offered to perform.

Who? Well, Alec Baldwin, of course.

Baldwin, who you may know as the actor who plays Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, is not a big fan of the president-elect.

Nevertheless, he saw what a hard time Trump was having booking decent entertainment, so he decided to help the guy out by volunteering to sing the classic AC/DC song, "Highway to Hell" on his big night. Read more...

Snapchat unveils a game that you play with your face

Along with new festive holiday lenses for Christmas, Snapchat has also released a new lens that lets you play a game with your face.

The game, which is featured within the app, is called Santa's Helper. In it, your face is placed on an elf's body as you try to slide down a snowy slope, collecting presents and ornaments, and dodging bunny rabbits that'll try to punch you.

And here's the coolest part: you control your elf by turning your head left and right.

What does this new lens-based game mean for Snapchat? Is the company getting serious about gaming? Though Snapchat told TechCrunch Santa's Helper is "the launch of a new, native games feature," the game is unlikely to become the next Pokémon Go. Read more...

Sorry internet, Sinbad never played a genie and 'Shazam' doesn't exist

Sorry '90s kids, Sinbad has never starred as a genie in a movie called Shazam, despite what you think you recall.

That fact has not stopped multitudes on the internet from believing in this fictional movie. While traces of this invented film have popped up over the years, it's only in the last month that confused nostalgia for something that never existed has boiled over into a frenzy

Here I am trying to go to bed at a decent time only to find out that Sinbad never played a Genie in a movie! Even though I know Ive seen it!

— Chase Burgess (@LeadBurgess) December 16, 2016

Writing for The New Statesmen, Amelia Tait laid out the very real confusion housed in certain parts of Reddit, wherein people with firm memories of a movie called Shazam starring Sinbad have shared their stories and have tried to work out what it means that no evidence for it exists.  Read more...

Of course Matthew McConaughey faked an Australian accent for a year

Having an Aussie accent in America can really play to your advantage. It's cute, it's unusual, it's got that Crocodile Dundee vibe.

It's no wonder then that Matthew McConaughey faked an Australian accent after returning home from living Down Under for one year between high school and college.

McConaughey pulled the accent for almost 12 months while he was studying at the University of Texas at Austin, he told Seth Meyers Friday on Late Night with Seth Meyers

Why? He was doing it to impress women, of course. "The ladies kinda were [into it] ... which is why I was doing it," he said.  Read more...

The inventor of the mug shot also photographed hands, feet and dead bodies

Setups for photographing suspects and murder scenes.

Image: adoc-photos/Corbis via Getty Images

In the first decades after the invention of photography, police forces began assembling “rogues galleries,” collections of images of suspected and convicted criminals.

These galleries were rarely organized in any systematic way, much to the chagrin of Alphonse Bertillon, who began his career as a clerk in the Prefecture of Police in Paris in 1879.

Seeking to create some kind of orderly system for recording the features of suspected criminals and organizing them in a useful way, Bertillon developed a system of anthropometrics that came to be called the Bertillon system. Read more...

The internet has Brendan Fraser fever, and the only cure is more Brendan Fraser

The most beloved actor on the internet right now is Brendan Fraser.

Fraser, who hasn't been in a hit movie or television show since 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth, has seen a huge boom in internet fandom, including a boom in traffic on the "SAVEBRENDAN" Subreddit — dedicated to reigniting Fraser's career — and a 30,000-strong petition to Netflix, HBO and Starz to give him more work as an actor.

The recent obsession with Fraser and his career started with his recurring role as Gunther in the third season of The Affair. Fraser's return to the spotlight after eight years reminded fans of the actor's talent and turned attention to his lack of performances. Read more...

It was the first known map to feature parts of the New World labeled “America,” derived from the Latin version of Vespucci’s first name

The letter detailed players' issues with the PEA, namely the league's lack of transparency with players and its attempt to block its league participants from competing in the similarly structured ESL Pro League.
