Boyfriend buys girlfriend the gift of her dreams: a blanket with his face on it

When it comes to gifts, it's always the thought that counts.

Take 17-year-old Alyson Alfaro, for example, whose seemingly outlandish gift from her boyfriend  turned out to be exactly what she wanted.

Alfaro and her boyfriend, Exavier don't get to see each other often because they live three hours apart, she explained to Buzzfed News. One day, after six months of dating, Alfaro told Exavier that she was cold, and wished he could be there to keep her warm.

That's when the dutiful boyfriend came up with a very unique gift idea: a blanket with his face on it. Read more...

The first-ever IHOP-Applebee's is coming to make food dreams come true

Many Americans experience supreme difficulty deciding between Applebee's or IHOP.

Fortunately, Detroit has a solution: the first-ever combination IHOP/Applebee's restaurant will open in 2017.

As reported by The Detroit Free Press, the restaurant will be located in the Millender Building in the city's downtown and cater towards people working in the area or tourists staying in nearby hotels.

While that's likely going to be the case, knowing both of these restaurants, the tables will also be filled with teenagers.

The 300-seat restaurant will employ around 100 people. This wise business decision originated in the declining sales of both chains, but fear not — together, they will be strong. Read more...

This secretary has no idea that she has a weed pipe on her desk

Glass pipes used to smoke cannabis are works of art worthy of being on display. Though sometimes their beauty can distract people from realizing what they're truly intended for.

A Twitter user named Ellie was recently visiting her primary care doctor in Greensboro, North Carolina, for a check up when she noticed something peculiar on the secretary's desk.

Image: supplied

It's a little hard to notice but if you zoom in on the cute glass elephant figurine on her desk you'll notice it's definitely a weed pipe.

Image: SUPPLIED

And to be fair it's actually a pretty sweet pipe. The mouthpiece is the elephant's trunk and the chamber (where you put the weed) is located on its back.   Read more...

NBA rookie dunks on LeBron James and Kyrie Irving in the same damn game

How was your Tuesday night? Guarantee it wasn't as fun as that of Malcolm Brogdon, an NBA rookie from the University of Virginia.

First, Brogdon dunked all up on star Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving — then he one-upped himself by throwing down a reverse jam over none other than LeBron James

Here's Brogdon, a guard for the Milwaukee Bucks, taking Irving to the hole and dunking on his head.

Not bad, not bad. But nothing compared to Brogdon's next feat.

Sling TV's set-top box will unite streaming and broadcast channels in one place

Dish's Sling TV is pushing out even further into living rooms with the release of its own streaming device, the AirTV Player. The set-top box looks to bring everything a cable TV escapee could hope for all into one seamless interface: Netflix, local broadcasts and, of course, live cable channel service through a Sling TV subscription.

As is the case with most cord-cutting service announcements, however, there's quite a few caveats — along with the small issue that as of now, the AirTV Player hasn't been formally announced at all. While the device page for the AirTV Player and an FAQ section are active on the Sling TV site, the product hasn't been promoted through any of Sling TV's promotional channels.  Read more...

'Smog refugees' struggle to escape 'Airpocolypse' in Beijing

Winter has arrived in Beijing, and residents are struggling to escape the heavy smog that has settled on the city.

This season the air pollution in China — stemming from power plants, factories, vehicles and other sources — has grown so bad during the past five days that it has put the safety of half a billion people at risk.

Since polluted areas of north and central China were put under red alert from Friday until Wednesday by authorities, the haze has thickened, impacting everyday life and causing tens of thousands of "smog refugees" to evacuate.

Snow falls in Sahara Desert town for the 1st time in more than 3 decades

For the first time in 37 years, snow fell in Ain Sefra, Algeria in the Sahara Desert on Dec. 20, 2016. It turned the arid desert into a stunning landscape of contrasts. The community is known as the "Gateway to the Sahara," and is located just high enough (at about 3,200 feet) that when an unusually strong storm at upper levels of the atmosphere passed overhead, the air temperatures dropped low enough to support snow.

To win in 2017, Microsoft has to keep innovating

What happens when you stop being afraid? Ask Microsoft, a company that seemed to spend the better part of a decade tiptoeing around customer concerns and competitive land mines to create a string of perfectly acceptable products with very little heat.

Fast forward to the last couple of years where Microsoft has consistently surprised customers and even outshone competitors.

"Microsoft is focused on building market-leading, category-changing products. They seemed to have seized that mantel from Apple." Said Forrester Research analyst J.P. Gownder. Read more...

That said, you'll almost certainly have to cough up more cash. Here are the ways you can do it: Read more...

Around the world, governments submitted more requests for data on Facebook users in the first half of 2016.

But, despite it being a time of political turmoil, they also asked for fewer posts to be taken down, according Facebook’s biannual transparency report.

Sex, drugs and swearing: Here's how you could lose your Uber privileges

If you're in an Uber, please, quit the heavy petting.

Like its drivers, Uber passengers get rated out of five stars, but the rideshare service has been relatively tightlipped until now about why riders might get marked down or lose access to trips all together.

On Thursday, the company released its new community guidelines in Australia and New Zealand, suggesting it would much prefer you wait until you get home before doing anything remotely sexual. The local guidelines follow the rollout of new rider and driver rules in the U.S. early December.

The most memorable lines from Obama's 8 years in office

Before we hand over the reins to Donald Trump and his unique way of speaking (and tweeting), let's reflect on some of the eloquence President Barack Obama shared with us through his time in office.

Obama's team of speechwriters picked out the big moments in the past eight years of his presidential speeches Tuesday, covering everything from his response to the Sandy Hook school massacre, the SCOTUS decision on marriage equality and the killing of Osama bin Laden.

The thoughts and careful turns of phrase he spoke didn't just write themselves. And while a lot was in the delivery, the people behind the scenes had a lot to do with what we ended up hearing online, on the TV or radio.  Read more...

Woman smuggles cat in her carry-on luggage from Canada to New Zealand

The unnamed woman who arrived from Vancouver, had the feline in the small carry-on bag. That's a 14-hour flight, by the way.

She declared "dirty boots" to officials, then later confessed that she had the pet on her person when Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) staff attempted to x-ray her bag.

"She was very reluctant to have the hand bag x-rayed, saying it had already been checked by our quarantine officers. She only revealed the cat after we insisted the bag will have to undergo further biosecurity checks," Craig Hughes, from the MPI, said in a statement. Read more...

Machine learning could soon help make sure no one steals your logo

A computer's ability to accurately identify images is a white whale for many technology companies, from Baidu to Google.

One Australian startup has found a corner of the market to dominate, winning contracts with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and IP Australia for algorithms that can detect and compare logos.

TrademarkVision, which has support from Australia's CEA Startup Fund, uses machine learning to support image searches that can identify similar trademarks.

Having a unique trademark or logo is vital, but many intellectual property registration bodies often require outdated forms of non-visual search that make comparison difficult.  Read more...

India's federal bank just can't make up its mind on demonetization

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s federal bank, has now been touted as the ‘Reverse Bank of India’ or even the ‘Rollback Bank of India’, following its most recent U-turn that has to do with the deposit of scrapped currency notes.

Three days ago, the RBI had issued its 59th circular since demonetization, restricting people from depositing over Rs 5,000 ($73.7) in old banknotes more than once till Dec. 30.

One of the clauses had also said that any deposit exceeding that amount would be put through questioning by two bank officials, who have to be given a “satisfactory explanation” for why the old notes were not deposited earlier.  Read more...

India goes berserk after Bollywood couple names newborn after medieval emperor

“What’s in a name?”  Or so, said the great William Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet, possibly his most celebrated work.

But perhaps there is a lot in a name in a country like India, where the christening of a newborn is a massive occasion. Families are known to carefully choose their child's name, sometimes even taking into account the alignment of stars and other extra-terrestrial happenings.

In such a sensitive milieu, A-list celebrity couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor — he, who hails from the royal family of Pataudi in northern India, and she, who belongs to the oldest and most illustrious family of Indian cinema — came under heavy social media criticism for naming their newborn Taimur.  Read more...

The Prince of Wales has delivered a stark warning against the rise of populism saying it risks repeating the "dark days" of the 1930s.

During the popular BBC Radio 4’s religious Thought for the Day slot, Prince Charles expressed his grave concerns over the increase of religious hatred and he pleaded for countries to welcome those fleeing persecution.

Google’s audacious plan to connect millions of Indians to the internet is chugging along smoothly.

Google announced Thursday its free Wi-Fi is now working at the 100 busiest railway stations in India. Over five million people in the country latch on to Google's free internet service every month, with 15,000 of them accessing the internet for the first time in their lives every day, the company said.

The growth of what Google described as "the largest public Wi-Fi project in the world" is in line with company's expectations. Earlier this year, at the time of the launch, Google had said it aims to be at 100 railway stations by the end of 2016. Nestlé sets up bonkers machine that plays Christmas tunes and brews coffee

Nestlé has set up an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine in downtown Tokyo that will take your coffee order and play you "Joy to the World".

The 3.5m (11.5 ft) contraption consists of 1,450 pieces of wood, of which 180 are tuned to play notes to the song as a ball bearing rolls across them. The ball also triggers hammers to strike glockenspiel keys along the way, creating a bell-like symphony behind the melody.

The machine is installed in the Nescafé outlet in trendy Harajuku, to promote the company's Bluetooth-enabled coffee makers. After the user selects a coffee preference in a companion app, the machine begins brewing while the ball bearing is released from the top of the wooden contraption. Read more...

Seth Meyers slams Trump's climate denial in 'Late Night' segment

NBC's Seth Meyers has been transforming his show into a home for substantive, and hilarious, critiques of the incoming Trump administration. On Wednesday's Late Night, Meyers devoted nearly 10 minutes to a discussion of the president-elect's views on climate change — and it wasn't pretty.

Noting Trump's hatred of wind mills (they kill too many eagles, Trump has repeatedly said), denial of mainstream climate science and ideological cabinet picks, Meyers paints a picture of a downright dangerous incoming administration.

The segment, like most of Meyers' "A Closer Look" pieces, is worth watching in its entirety to catch up on exactly how anti-climate science Trump and his team actually are, and why you should care.  Read more...

Why you won't want to rewatch 'Rogue One'

It had been a long 10 days since I'd first seen Rogue One in the euphoric setting of the world premiere in Los Angeles. Since then, I'd been on the road constantly — Las Vegas, New York — and hadn't had a moment to book a second screening.

A recent order by India’s green court says that a fine would be imposed on all airlines that are found emptying toilet tanks midair.

The move comes after the hearing of a petition filed by a retired army officer, who claimed that the “walls and floors” of his house in the capital city of Delhi had been repeatedly spattered with human waste dropping from airplanes.

Consequently, the National Green Tribunal has directed the country’s aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), to impose a fine of Rs. 50,000 ($736) on carriers caught indulging in the practice.   Read more...

Inside Amazon's Prime Now warehouse the week before Christmas

Inside Amazon's New York warehouse for Prime Now, nothing is organized.

Or actually it is, but the only person who could understand it is an algorithm.

The one-floor warehouse halfway up an office building on 34th Street is full of everything marked as currently available on Prime Now, Amazon's service that has couriers deliver orders within two hours.

The 25,000 products aren't grouped by type. Instead, they're stashed in cubbies and tracked in a kind of organized chaos. A copy of Hamilton by Ron Chernow, for example, sits next to a box of candy canes or a jar of mayonnaise.

The final 'Overwatch' developer update of 2016 looks at what's ahead

How the latest LED technology is making your home lighting more adaptable

For most of us, the bedroom is more than a slumber chamber — it’s an expression of self. The living room? A projection of our personalities, our tastes, our life experiences — where we welcome loved ones and complete strangers to dwell with us as well as a bit of humble bragging. We don’t just decorate them. We engineer them.

Yet, despite all this care, we tend to neglect the light that illuminates all of this meticulous work and sets the tone for our daily lives. It’s not that we don’t care about light (we wouldn’t have social photo filters such as “1977” and Noir” if we didn’t), but we think of it as a constant that we buy once and live with indefinitely, like a tattoo, or a parakeet. The main reason we finally get around to changing our bulbs? When they go out, according to market research by Philips Lighting.  Read more...

How couples can solve lighting disagreements for good

Think at-home lighting is no big deal? Think again.

For many couples, getting their lamps, overhead fixtures and task lighting adjusted to their liking is a bit like Goldilocks testing out the beds of the three bears. For some, lighting is too bright, for others it’s too soft.

Finding that “just right” light can be a struggle.

“I'm a night owl, and I like dim, soft light in the evenings,” says Jason Simms, a public relations specialist living in Connecticut.

His wife Jillian, however, is just the opposite.

“[She] is often doing something that requires dexterity and the ability to see,” Simms says of his wife of three years. “She just generally prefers brighter light.”    Read more...

Officially called Roller Coaster Tycoon Classic, the $5.99 game looks to be a near perfect copy of the original PC game that was first released in 1999. Seriously. The game is pixelated as hell and the design has barely been updated for touch screens.

That's a good thing, though. Atari previously released Roller Coaster Tycoon 4, a more modern free-to-play version of the game and it just wasn't the same.  Read more...

North Pole hits melting point in time for Christmas, so Santa can just swim to you now

Today is an extremely unusual December day at the North Pole, with temperatures getting very close to the melting point of 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0 degrees Celsius.

For perspective, the temperature at the North Pole is about 40 degrees Fahrenheit above average for the date.

Data from a buoy located about 80 miles south of the dark, windswept pole hit 32 degrees on Thursday morning as storm systems dragged unusually mild air into the high Arctic. Aiding the warm spell is the fact that these winds passed over Arctic waters that would normally be covered with sea ice but are open ocean this year after a severe sea ice melt season and record-slow winter freeze-up.  Read more...

You can finally play 'Pokémon Go' on an Apple Watch

Pokémon Go fans get one more surprise as the holidays descend: Apple Watch support.

The Pokémon Go app for Apple Watch is a stripped down companion to the smartphone game. You can't actually use it to catch Pokémon, but it plugs in to virtually every other facet of the game.

Notifications let players know about nearby Pokémon and PokéStops, as well as eggs that are ready to hatch. You can also collect PokéStop items from the app and check your progress toward hatching eggs or collecting candy from your Buddy Pokémon. Read more...

Double parker receives shoppers' wrath in the form of shopping carts

Everyone who has ever driven a car can agree that people who park over the line are the worst.

One driver broke the golden rule of staying in the lines in a Walmart parking lot in Biddeford, Maine. So, shoppers took their revenge by barricading the car with shopping carts.

"This guy got a lesson in parking," Matthew Mills wrote alongside a photo of the prank on Facebook.

Mills was not involved in the shopping cart artwork – he was just a bystander.

"I was going shopping with my father to get some last-minute gifts," Mills wrote to Mashable. "I noticed the car was directly over the yellow line and surrounded by carts." Read more...

'Super Mario Run' remake brings parkour to the Mushroom Kingdom

Parkour is alive and well, all thanks to Super Mario. It's been three years since we've seen a parkour rendition of the Mario brothers, and this one bests that one by leaps and bounds.

After Nintendo released Super Mario Run, an iOS version of Super Mario, last week, filmmaker Devin Graham created a live-action parkour short inspired by the game. This version is a little darker, as Princess Peach is kidnapped by shy guys at the beginning of the clip.

But not to worry, because real-life Mario runs through snow, desert and grass to save her.

Mama mia!

'Poop the Potato' game is here to save you from the holidays

Millions of people around the world will be suffering through the holidays for the next few weeks, which means there will be countless awkward holiday parties no one really wants to attend. Thankfully, there's a new, entertaining game out going around the internet to break the ice and have some fun.

The game is called "Poop the Potato" and it's actually pretty simple. The only things you need are some raw potatoes (one for each person playing) and two 5-gallon buckets.

Groups of people are separated into two teams, each of which form a single file line. Set the two buckets across the room, stick a potato between your legs and start the race. One at a time, each team member must waddle across the room with the potato between their legs and drop it into the bucket, like you would drop a deuce in the toilet. The first team to successfully "poop" all of the potatoes into their bucket wins.  Read more...

The 16 most bogus movie stories of 2016 (and how to spot them)

"Fake news" had its shining moment on the political hill in 2016, but anyone who’s been around Hollywood long enough knows that ginned-up movie and TV "news" has been a cottage industry for more than a century. This year, Hollywood’s fake movie news was as phony and fulsome as ever.

Up in Silicon Valley, they call it "vaporware": Projects announced so prematurely that they're more than likely to die in development. Showbiz stories, built on dreams and funny-money, are flimsier still.

And there are dozens of progress points at which industry publications — "trades," in the local lingo — report in. Writer hired to punch up a script? Item! Studio courts A-list actress for beloved franchise? Item! Read more...
