People are accusing Kylie Jenner of Photoshopping her butt to sell jeans

If the peach emoji isn't sacred, what is?

Kylie Jenner is the latest Kardashian sister kaught in a Photoshop kontroversy after she Instagrammed a sponsored post for jeans with what appears to be a digitally enhanced backside.

A photo posted by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

"Obsessed with my new @fashionnova jeans 🍑Get them at FashionNova.com 😍 #ad," writes Jenner.

Kylie is, of course, no stranger to enhancements. She's come clean about getting lip injections and her fondness for padded Spanx. This image, however, definitely looks like it was digitally doctored if you compare the belt loops and pockets in her Instagram to the website's photo of the jeans. Read more...

The surprising 'Home Alone' and 'Friends' connection you never noticed

Could your mind BE anymore blown?

After a thorough investigation, production company 22 Vision has discovered that the house Monica and Chandler Bing move into in the final season of Friends is, in fact, the same house the McAllisters lived in in the 1990s holiday classic Home Alone.

While the McAllisters lived in Chicago and Chandler and Monica were based in a suburb of New York, the production company compiled their compelling evidence into one video.

It's official: Russia tamped with the 2016 election via hackers

The United States formally accused Russia of tampering with the 2016 election.

According to a joint report by the F.B.I. and Department of Homeland Security issued Thursday, Russian intelligence operatives gained access to "a U.S. political party"—presumably the Democratic National Committee—in two separate instances, and were able to steal files from them.

The report's release coincided with the announcement of sanctions against Russia, including the expulsion of 35 diplomats.

The report confirms previous reports about the hacking of the D.N.C., which led to the leak of emails sparking a variety of conspiracies, and accusations of biasCybersecurity experts who investigated the DNC hack found strategies used to gain access to computers, files for stealing, and other security credentials. A comet will fly past Earth on New Year's Eve. No, it's not a sign of the apocalypse.

If you're looking for an extra dose of fireworks this New Year's Even, look to the skies for the chance to see a comet that only comes around every five years.

The comet — named Comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdušáková — is set to appear somewhere near the crescent moon on Dec. 31. It won't be visible to the naked eye, however.

Interested skywatchers will need a set of binoculars or a small telescope to really be able to see the comet in clear skies.

While comets have historically been seen as bad omens, Comet 45P doesn't pose a threat to Earth. The ball of ice and dust will still be millions of miles from the planet when it makes its close flyby this month. Read more...

Jack Dorsey is one of the guys who founded Twitter. He's also the guy who cofounded payment company Square.

He had a pro-Hillary meltdown on live TV. Then the conspiracy theories started.

John Grkovic is a passionate guy. We saw that in a CNN man-on-the-street interview the day after the election during a protest in Chicago.

His fervor shone through the dark Chicago streets, as did his ardent Hillary Clinton support and frustration with the electoral college system in a two-minute clip that aired live.

Soon after his appearance on CNN, his TV moment took a turn. Grkovic's full name and phone number got out and he was bombarded with calls and emails from people who believe he is a CNN cameraman who was paid to look like a protester. Dubious news outlets picked up on this line of thinking and wrote online stories about him posing as a protester. The story started to spread. Read more...

Book service helps black children find empowering stories they can relate to

When her son was 6 months old, Tamara McNeil started looking for children's books that would feed his growing curiosity. While shopping at big retailers, however, she couldn't find books that prominently featured black characters.

"There weren't a lot of books that were reflective of him," McNeil tells Mashable in a phone interview, as her now 19-month-old son babbles in the background. "There were awesome stories, but just no characters in those books who looked like him."

McNeil tried to think of solutions — ways to make it easier to find books her son and other black children could relate to. She came up with the Just Like Me! Box, a subscription service that delivers two or three carefully selected books to a child's door each month. Educational activities, like vocabulary-based word searches, complement the reading. The children get to keep the books and activities for their growing libraries. Read more...

It's just plain fun to watch this model's pants repeatedly fall down during a photoshoot

Every job comes with its own unique challenges. Extremely good looking models, for example, have to deal with high-fashion pants that are always comically falling down during photoshoots.

Move on from 'Hamilton': 8 best theater shows of 2016

In lots of different ways, 2016 was ... far from ideal.

Which made various theatrical productions — both serious and not so serious — a welcome escape for many fans, whether that come in the form of taking in a show or listening to a cast album on repeat or marathoning YouTube clips in between rage-reading politics articles.

In no particular order, here are eight shows that soared in 2016 (to pre-empt angry emails, a reminder that the excellent Hamilton, which you spent most of 2016 listening to on repeat, opened on Broadway in 2015).

1. Dear Evan Hansen
Broadway's newest hit (it opened just a few weeks ago) stars Pitch Perfect's Ben Platt as an awkward and deeply anxious teen who gets caught up in a big lie following the death of a classmate. Soaring and sad, with music by La La Land duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the show explores that all-too-familiar feeling of being an outsider in your world and what happens when you attempt to change that, in one troubling way or another.  Read more...

To start, implement a 20% minimum for tips. Remember to tip baristas, hair salon shampooers and coatroom attendants, too — they are often forgotten. Finally, if you can’t afford to leave a good tip somewhere, don’t go there. Service industry workers deserve to be compensated fairly no matter what your budget is. Read more...

The hidden, floating sanctuary built by artists

When I need to escape for a few days, the first place that comes to mind is a tiny outpost called Freedom Cove.

Freedom Cove is a hidden treasure tucked away off the west coast of Vancouver Island. He is a good friend of Wayne and Catherine King, whose floating home is only accessible by boat.

India will dance to its Prime Minister's tunes on New Year's Eve

Modi's last unscheduled address had shaken Indian citizens and the effects of his announcement haven't worn off yet.

BHIM app will replace all cash transactions in India: PM Modi

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced a new app to encourage more Indians to pay online in the aftermath of invalidation of most circulated cash last month

Called Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM), the app works on top of the country's UPI mobile banking platform and uses a mobile number as the payment address. The app, which has the simplest user interface for any UPI-enabled app to date, is positioned as a substitute for plastic cards and point-of-sale terminals.

To use BHIM app, a user is required to register their bank account with the app, set a UPI PIN for the account, and use their mobile number as payment address. Users also have the option create a custom payment address. The biggest selling point for the app is it works across all banks and users do not need to use separate apps in case they have multiple accounts in different banks.  Read more...

In an instant messaging world, a delayed response is anxiety inducing

The 9 most cringeworthy brand fails of 2016

No, California has not legalized child prostitution

A rumour that prostitution by minors will be legal in California from January has caused quite a stir on right-wing Twitter.

However the rumour relies on a shaky understanding of a law approved back in September by California (Dem.) Governor Jerry Brown.

The outrage started after the Washington Examiner published an article entitled "California Democrats legalize child prostitution."

"Beginning on Jan. 1, prostitution by minors will be legal in California. Yes, you read that right," it reads, before calling out progressive Democrats for approving "terribly destructive legislation." Read more...

Amazon Alexa helpfully tries to give porn to a child

We're not exactly sure what this child is asking for when he says, "Alexa, play 'Digger digger,'" but we're almost positive it's not porn.

Regardless, Amazon's personal assistant reached back through her algorithmic server banks, scanned the child's budding language and, through the miracle of technology, determines that this child really wants to hear some porn.

It only takes a beat or two before the filming parents realize what is happening. Unfortunately, their cries of protest can do nothing to stop the march of innovation and Alexa will be heard.

Artist creates heartwarming pins congratulating the victories that go unnoticed

Wouldn't it be nice if every victory earned a congratulations? Artist Emily McDowell thinks so.

She created one part hilarious, one part heartwarming enamel pins to recognize personal accomplishments and "everyday bravery."

"Things like surviving grief or changing your thinking take a lot of work, and I think it's cool to acknowledge it."

Currently offering 24 pins ranging from "Unfriended a racist" to "Drank enough water," the company offers congratulations for individual accomplishments that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. Read more...

Trump sings about his presidency in the ultimate parody remix

It's the end of the year and Cassetteboy, the king of UK political remixes, has turned his witty, catchy eye to the US.

Aired during Charlie Brooker’s 2016 Wipe — the eagerly anticipated look back at the events of the past year by the creator of Black Mirror — the video takes aim at Donald Trump to the familiar beat of "Ms. Jackson" by Outkast. The lyrics have been changed so that Trump is singing: "I'm sorry Ms. Clinton."

Trump's parody tune starts off like this:

"Beginning on January 20, 2017, Americans will experience government incompetence like they've never, ever seen. No tolerance, no sympathy, no decency. It's me." He then smirks at the camera and continues singing the popular refrain.  Read more...

10 tips for new writers from a self-published success

It's that time when many people look to the year ahead as an opportunity to reassess their goals. If you're one of those who has always aspired to become a writer but don't even know where to begin, then this list by the best-selling self-published author Mark Dawson is a good place to start. Mark's initial venture down the traditional publishing route was a flop. Now he's part of an entrepreneurial generation of writers who are challenging traditional models and using technology to find commercial success online. Here are his top 10 tips for new writers:

1. Write in a series

It’s easier to market a series. Readers will come back again and again for characters that they love. I wrote two standalone novels when I was getting started, and it was more difficult to find traction with those. My John Milton series features a character that readers get to know. They’re anxious to follow his adventures, and they will often chew their way through the entire series and then email me to find out when they can expect the next. Read more...

Firefighters rescue dog that slipped through the ice on Lake Michigan

Rescue workers from the White Lake Fire Authority responded to a call on Wednesday after a family dog fell through the ice on Lake Michigan.

Using a safety rope, the rescuers were able to walk to the dog's location on the ice, which was approximately 100 yards from the shore. A rescue worker then climb into the ice himself to retrieve the dog, and the two were pulled to safety by the rest of the team.

Although this pup can't speak, you can tell by its face that it's extremely grateful to be out of that cold water.

Fortunately, the dog was later reunited with its owners.

Why 2016 was the year of time travel

Consider this more than a coincidence: a year that clearly overstayed its welcome, 2016, was also a year in which time travel could be found everywhere in popular culture.

From the year's most popular book and play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, to the hit movie Arrival, to a plethora of books and TV shows, mainstream entertainment seemed to decide its audience could handle some brain-busting twists in time.

Suddenly, the fourth dimension was broken more often than the fourth wall.

That makes a lot of sense. When democracies go haywire and the dark forces of ignorance and populism are on the rise everywhere, when beloved celebrities drop like ninepins, it seems we would all like to step into a machine that will take us anywhere but here. Nostalgia is in vogue.  Read more...

These are the top 16 movies of 2016

Controversial opinion: 2016 has been a great year.

For movies.

After I bah-humbugged 2014 and declared 2015 a dud for prestige films, 2016 – for all the suffering and heartbreak it hath wrought outside the cinema – brought forth so many great films that a Top 10 list just wasn't going to cover it. This list goes to 16.

That's right 2016, we're taking the number 16 back. And throwing it in your dumb face because guess what? You were terrible, but your movies ruled.

As I've done in the past, I informally polled the known film buffs among Mashable's offices in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Sydney and beyond to gather their thoughts and consensus (not to mention a few threats to fight one another over Rogue One opinions).  Read more...

Facebook is incredibly thirsty for your eyeballs this New Year's Eve

App notifications—they're bad! But app notifications that are basically advertisements? Actually the worst!

Some lucky duck got a £5 note 'worth £50,000' in a Christmas card

Yes, I know Christmas is almost over and we'll soon be singing "Auld Lang Syne", but I've still got "All I want for Christmas" by Mariah Carey in my head. The reason? Because all I want for Christmas is a fiver.

Not just any old fiver. One of those ultra-rare £5 notes worth £50,000. You know the ones with the special Jane Austen inscription? There are only four of them in circulation in the UK and two have already been snapped up.

The hidden picture of Jane Austen which could make your £5 note worth £20,000! https://t.co/XEhDGWhidj pic.twitter.com/bSAK8EgLb1

7 steps to a more productive morning

When you hear someone talk about mornings, what comes to mind? Do you picture peace and serenity with a warm cup of coffee in one hand and a computer mouse in the other – fervently getting a head start on the day’s tasks? Or do you imagine hitting the snooze button, rolling out of bed, and hastily grabbing a breakfast bar before getting in the car and racing to the office?

When discussing the topic of mornings with people, you’ll get passionate responses and beliefs. There are those who believe mornings are meant for productivity and output. And then there are those who feel like mornings are meant for sleep and idleness. And while there’s a time for both, rarely do you meet successful people who opt for the snooze button over starting the day a few minutes early. Read more...

Conspiracy theorists think an injured NBA player is another victim of Pizzagate

One of the top posts on a subreddit for Donald Trump supporters is purporting that Dallas Mavericks center Andrew Bogut is being benched due to his opinions on Pizzagate.

Bogut, who has tweeted about Pizzagate in the past, was injured in a December 5 game and expected to miss between 10 days and a month.

This doesn't add up to reddit's Pizzagate conspiracy theorists, however. A post by a user named WhiteGenocideXLV claims there's a deeper story to Bogut's knee injury.

Image: screenshot, reddit

Commenters claim Bogut's very real, well-documented injury and his expected time off are fabrications created by Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. They believe Bogut is being punished for tweets expressing mild support of Pizzagate theoriesRead more...

Majestic lynx casually wanders onto ski slope to check out the action

It's definitely real, dude.

A majestic lynx wandered onto the slopes near at the Purgatory Resort in Durango, Colorado, on Wednesday, scaring and mystifying skiers and snowboarders while they hit some powder.

The lynx eventually left without incident, and was probably trying to figure out just what these idiot humans were doing with boards strapped to their feet.

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife shared the video to its Facebook page on Thursday, reminding people to admire the wildlife but not to approach or chase them.

While lynx are still quite rare, a 20-year rehabilitation program has made the population in Colorado self-sustaining. In 2010 the parks department estimated that 150-250 wild lynx roam the backcountry of Colorado.  Read more...
