An NBA player autographed a fan's weed grinder

An autographed jersey? Old news. An autographed basketball card? Older news.

An NBA fan in Oregon recently got his marijuana grinder signed by a Portland Trail Blazers star.

There's probably a pick-and-roll joke in here somewhere, but we're too lazy to find it. Anyway, here's what happened.

A fan named Calder Johnson spotted Trail Blazers forward Noah Vonleh at a local Safeway. Johnson had apparently left both his authentic Vonleh jersey and his Vonleh rookie card at home — but some quick stoner thinking saved the day.  Read more...

One of the best college running backs ever is close to setting an embarrassing NFL 'record'

Once upon a time, Reggie Bush was one of college football's best running backs, but boy have times changed.

Bush, now a backup with the Buffalo Bills, has rushed 12 times for a total negative three yards this season. That's right, Bush has been so bad, his rushing totals are negative.

And if he doesn't pick up the pace, he'll become the first running back to ever finish with negative rushing yards and more than 10 carries.

Buffalo will face the Jets in the regular season finale this Sunday, where Bush needs at least three rushing yards to avoid that unfortunate record, as brought to light by columnist Jeff DuncanRead more...

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are the 'most admired' people in America

Hillary Clinton extended a record and President Barack Obama got in another parting shot over his eventual successor, Donald Trump, in Gallup's annual "most admired" poll.

Clinton, who lost the presidential election to Trump despite garnering almost 3 million more popular votes, was Gallup's "most admired woman" for a record 21st time (and 15th in a row), nabbing 12 percent of the vote. Eleanor Roosevelt is a distant second for all-time wins in the "most admired woman" poll with 13.

Finishing second was outgoing First Lady Michelle Obama with eight percent, and she was followed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Oprah Winfrey, each with three percent.  Read more...

Simone Biles is too busy shining to worry about body-shaming trolls

Olympics glory is particularly strange for stars in the field of women's gymnastics, where the best performers are often teenagers who are thrust into the bubbling cauldron of overnight fame at an impossibly young age.

Gabby Douglas learned this the hard way in Rio de Janeiro. Now Simone Biles, the American star who supplanted Douglas this summer, has a message for her own critics.

Fresh off winning four gold medals and a bronze in the 2016 Olympics, Biles was named "female athlete of the year" this week by the Associated Press. But that apparently hasn't stopped some from denigrating, of all things, her appearance.  Read more...

A picture of 6 girls on a couch is one of the great mysteries of our time

Take a look at this seemingly innocuous picture of six young women sitting on a couch. Nothing to see here, right? Just six friends who like the Packers hanging out.

Now look again, but this time try to find the legs belonging to the young woman in the middle. You can't find them. You have nothing. Nothing to do with all your strength. Nothing to do with all your ideas about where legs go.

The image was originally uploaded to Reddit on Dec. 24, where it's received over 6,100 points at the time of this writing.

We're living in a post-truth world, this is important. Read more...

Family game night seems designed to make grandpa lose his teeth

Sometimes, from unfortunate situations come the best viral videos.

Amy Metcalf Taylor shared an amazing home video of her 88-year-old grandfather Don Briggs playing the game "Speak Out."

The game works like this: the player puts a mouthpiece in that prevents them from closing their mouths, and is then required to say a phrase drawn from a deck of cards.

Unfortunately for this grandfather, who apparently put the mouthpiece in backwards, this caused his dentures to easily slip out of his mouth, and spectacularly terrify his great-granddaughter. Read more...

Going live on Facebook is actually the worst

Over the past several weeks, cities across the country have become awash with Facebook's biggest national marketing campaign ever. It's also the company's most cringe-worthy.

The towering murals assure you that it’s normal to broadcast live video of your daily life using the new Facebook Live feature. It's not.

One ad in Brooklyn reads, “How to go LIVE if you’re reading Tolstoy in public and nobody’s impressed.”

There isn't anything less worthy of a person's full attention than their Facebook friend reading Russian literature out loud. Read more...

Paul Ryan wants to fine people who livestream from the House floor

Democrats led an epic sit-in (25 hours is nothing to sneeze at) on the House floor last June when House Speaker Paul Ryan refused to vote on gun control bills following the Pulse nightclub massacre.

Livestreams, tweets and other social media posts of the hours-long Democratic refusal to leave chambers spread all over the internet, but now Ryan is proposing a vote in January to bring in rules that fine anyone who uses electronic devices to photograph, film or broadcast from the House floor.

Meet the NBA rookie who shoots free throws 'granny style'

Perhaps lost in your post-holiday food coma was a bit of important news: An NBA rookie who just made his debut for the Houston Rockets shoots his free-throws in what's known on schoolyards across America as, simply, "granny style."

This is the story of Chinanu Onuaku.

Onuaku played his first NBA game Monday night for the Houston Rockets. When Onuaku stepped to the free throw line for the first time in his young career, the basketball world collectively gasped.

Here was a man shooting free throws underhanded, like a grandmother or a second-grader (or Rick Barry, but we'll get to that in a minute). And Onuaku did it well — he was 2-2 from the charity stripe during the game.  Read more...

Check out Amazon's plans for drone-distributing airborne warehouses

Earlier this month, Amazon celebrated the first successful drone delivery made by its Prime Air service.

But that's just the beginning of Amazon's aerial assault into our homes, if a recently unearthed patent filing is to be believed. A possible endgame for the drone delivery agenda: The use of roving "airborne fulfillment centers" (AFCs) to make Prime deliveries.

That's right. Giant, possibly autonomous motherships full of your favorite products that then spit out delivery drones to bring stuff to your front door.

The patent, which was filed back in May of this year for Amazon Technologies Inc., was brought to our attention by Zoe Leavitt of CB Insights. Read more...

Cinnabon apologizes for tasteless Carrie Fisher tweet

Despite abundant evidence that it's a terrible idea, brands continue to tweet inane things after beloved celebrities die.

Cinnabon offered up a particularly egregious example of this practice when it tweeted shortly after Carrie Fisher's death on Tuesday that the actress will "always have the best buns in the galaxy."

The tasteless attempt at a product-integrated Star Wars reference naturally fell flat among Twitter users, and the brand deleted the tweet and issued an apology hours later.

In its statement, the pastry brand insisted the sentiment was genuine but conceded that the company "shouldn't have posted it." Read more...

Twitter's Periscope launches 360 video

It's not exactly virtual reality, but Twitter's Periscope has a new update that could make the service a lot more immersive.

On Wednesday, the company announced that 360 videos are now viewable in Periscope right in your Twitter stream.

Using an Insta360 camera that attaches to a smartphone, a user (see below) showed off how the 360 videos work, a post Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey promptly retweeted

One particularly noteworthy detail is the fact that, for now, Twitter says the 360 broadcasts only work using the Insta360 camera (could this be Twitter's hardware beta product answer to Snapchat's Spectacles? Obama names 2 new national monuments before Trump takes office

5 things left unsaid between us and our building's super in 2016

We'll say it: it's hard to be young.

The hardest part of being young but trying to be an adult? Interacting with your super in order to make the apartment you’re privileged enough to have work properly.

Ken, our super, has been nothing but kind, but sometimes the thought of having to call him up isn’t worth getting the problem solved.

We’ll do almost anything to avoid a social interaction, even if that means leaving things unsaid between us and Ken (and putting our lives at risk by having no heat or locks on our windows).

Bowie and Prince to be remembered with huge, streamable NYE fireworks

The city of Sydney, Australia is saying goodbye to a terrible 2016 with one final bang.

Organisers of the city's much-loved, multi-million dollar New Year's Eve fireworks will be using the occasion to pay tribute to lost legends from the past year, including musicians Prince, David Bowie and Gene Wilder.

It's a change in tone from the display's previous themes, which primarily had uplifting (and admittedly very cheesy) titles such as "Embrace," "Make Your Mark," or "Awaken the Spirit."

The fireworks are set off around the harbour, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the focal point. It's tradition for the bridge to carry a neon symbol, which is revealed at the end of the display. In previous years it's been an eye, a pair of lips, and a light bulb.  Read more...

Wild wallaby really appreciates the sweet sounds of this guitarist

We put too much trust in algorithms and it's hurting our most vulnerable

If the past few years have taught us anything, it's that algorithms should not be blindly trusted.

The latest math-induced headache comes from Australia, where an automated compliance system appears to be issuing incorrect notices to some of Australia's most vulnerable people, asking them to prove they were entitled to past welfare benefits.

Politicians and community advocates have called foul on the system, rolled out by Australia's social services provider, Centrelink.

Launched in July, the system was intended to streamline the detection of overpayments made to welfare recipients and automatically issue notices of any discrepancies. Read more...

Send kisses to a loved one via iPhone with this 'kiss messenger'

Every now and then, another gadget comes along that tries to add a human touch to bare, cold metal.

The Kissenger is a "kiss messenger" that promises to replicate your kiss to a paired device, that will kiss the recipient for you.

The gadget looks like a large phone dock with a silicone pad in front. You kiss the pad, which registers the pressure of your kiss to the app.

The recipient can then press his or her gadget to the lips or cheek, while motors under the silicone pad push out your "kiss." Kind of.

It's unclear how realistic that will be, given that that pad is a flat bed with little pistons under it that exert pressure. Maybe it'll be like receiving a very polite peck on the cheek. Read more...

Macintosh was experimenting with naphtha — an oily by-product of tar — when he made a chance discovery that would redefine the way people dressed forever

"By sandwiching a layer of liquid rubber (made with naphtha) between two layers of fabric, Macintosh created a new material that would be resistant to water while also remaining flexible and wearable," reads Google's blog post on the inventor.  Read more...

Why wireless headsets for Oculus and Vive could be a step backward for VR

On the eve of CES, where virtual reality is set to dominate, the loudest chatter around VR seems to be focused on the dawn of tetherless, high-end VR headsets.

The basic idea: to bring the kind of mobility you enjoy with something like the mobile phone-based Samsung Gear VR to premium VR devices like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Some feel that once these higher-end headsets are untethered, VR will truly take off, as we'll be able to fully immerse ourselves by walking around freely in the real world while jacked into the virtual world.

Spoof TV reporter's stark message about homelessness in Britain

Jonathan Pie is at it again.

The left-wing fictional TV reporter (played by comedian Tom Walker) has launched a heart-felt tirade against the British government's perceived inaction over homelessness.

"I live in a society where the government does nothing about it apart from cut funding," Pie says, adding that sleeping rough doubled since 2010 while homelessness services have been halved.

"It's a societal failure, homelessness — one of the biggest indications that society failed its people who are hungry, begging and sleeping in the street," he said before rushing to the shop to buy a cheese sandwich, tobacco, water and a little bottle of whisky for a homeless man. Read more...

5 innovative ways art is becoming more accessible to the blind community

Art is a universal medium of expression, bridging gaps across language, time and culture.

But galleries and museums aren't always accessible to everyone, often excluding blind people and those with low vision from truly experiencing the art world. With about 285 million blind or visually impaired people in the world, that's a sizable part of the global population being left out.

But innovations — both simple and high-tech — are making the art world even more inclusive.

Many blind people and those with low vision have experienced art through audio descriptions of pieces, whether it's recorded commentary from museums or explanations from friends in real time. But this can prevent them from interpreting pieces of art for themselves. Read more...

The force is strong with this parking attendant.

Garrett Robinson caught (and hilariously narrated) a Chick-fil-A employee having the time of his life in the restaurant's parking lot with two toy light sabers and some seriously impressive Darth Maul-inspired moves.

Energized by what he saw, YouTube user GameKiller48 edited the video into its truest form, including the proper lightsaber glow and sound effects.

LG might be done with modular phones

So much for modular design becoming the next big thing for smartphones.

LG, the first major phone maker to launch a modular phone, might scrap the G5's swappable design in favor of a more traditional metal-and-glass design if a a new leak is to be believed.

Korea's ETNews, which has a mixed track record with phone leaks, claims LG's next flagship (tentatively called the G6), will feature a glass back with curved sides, similar to the backside of the Samsung Galaxy S7.

The glass back isn't just for a more premium feel but could bring the return of built-in wireless charging, a feature LG hasn't included since the G2. Read more...

8-year-old transgender boy kicked out of Cub Scouts because of his identity

SECAUCUS, New Jersey — The family of an 8-year-old New Jersey boy says he was kicked out of Cub Scouts because he is transgender, a move that could open a new front in the debate over discrimination in Scouting.

Joe Maldonado joined Pack 87 in Secaucus in October, and was asked to leave about a month later, according to The Record.

"I'm way more angry than sad," Joe said in a story published Tuesday. "My identity is a boy. If I was them, I would let every person in the world go in. It's right to do."

Joe has identified as male for more than a year. His mother, Kristie Maldonado, said Joe is accepted as a boy at school and that it was complaints from parents — not Joe's fellow Scouts — that led to his ouster. Read more...

The book 'Why Trump Deserves Trust, Respect and Admiration' isn't what you think

Post-election, Donald Trump supporters are asking Hillary Clinton backers to give the president-elect their support and respect — without exactly explaining why he deserves it.

A new book titled Why Trump Deserves Trust, Respect and Admiration, written by "political analyst" David King, hopes to fill in that gap. The book bravely attempts to give readers a list of reasons why they should trust Trump — and comes up with literally nothing.

The book, retailing at $7.99 on Amazon, is full of nothing but empty pages.

"These blank pages speak a thousand words, but feel free to use for notes," a footnote reads. Read more...

This app wants to help you invest in companies that align with your morals

Keeping track of which companies are under investigation, which invest in fossil fuels and which dodged taxes can be tough for a new investor.

Shape, a new iOS app founded in the United Kingdom, wants to help new people navigate the complex ethical terrain of investing.

Founded by an investment banker and a computer science alum, the app allows potential investors to look up companies they're interested in and see what ethical quandaries those firms are involved in.

Investors can opt to avoid altogether companies that have ties to tobacco, alcohol, weapons and nuclear projects. Other firms have a short description that outlines any other parts of that company's history that may be of interest to ethically-minded investors. That includes information about environmental harm, stances on foreign policy and tax schemes or economic bailouts.  Read more...

Ford's new self-driving Fusion looks like a actual car

If you pull up alongside a self-driving car today, you'll probably know it immediately — bulky external sensors make most of the current models logging test miles for Waymo, Chevy and others stick out on the streets like a sore thumb. There are a few less goofy-looking models on the road with autopilot features, like the Audi R7, but they're not so prevalent.

But if you run into one of the brand-new, next-gen driverless Ford Fusion Hybrids in the coming months, you might never notice it's autonomous. It's that... normal.

Chris Brewer, the chief program engineer of Ford's Autonomous Vehicle Development program, unveiled the latest iteration of Ford's self-driving tech in a Medium post yesterday, just ahead of the car company's mobility company's planned presentation next week at CES in Las Vegas.  Read more...

Student handwrites entire 'Bee Movie' script for his girlfriend in most romantic gesture of the season

If holiday movies are to be believed, this season is all about making huge romantic statements to let someone know how you feel about them.

In 2016, that means handwriting the full Bee Movie screenplay into a Christmas card.

Conner Fastenau, a college freshman at Baylor University, did just that for his girlfriend Nicole this Christmas, spending roughly three hours painstakingly writing out the full script of that animated movie where a human woman and a bee fall in love.

2016: The year Facebook became the bad guy

Facebook numbs us.

It's supposed to: As an app and social network, it offers an unending feed of comforting memories, photos from friends and updates from trusted brands. ("Not enjoying pooping at work?" Let Charmin help.)

But we felt a little sting in 2016, when Facebook, despite its best efforts, became political — an institution with far more power than many of us once recognized. It was the bad guy in an era that felt like a dystopic movie.

It plotted to expand its internet service empire, giving us a glimpse into a future when the world's largest social network administers internet access to millions (or billions) rather than ceding control to other providers. It overreacted to reports of bias in its "Trending" news feature and terminated its staff of human editors. Important media was censored on the platform. And Facebook allowed disinformation and viral hoaxes to run amok in the News Feed during a pivotal presidential election.  Read more...

Why 2016 was a huge year for women's health tech

Last month, Ida Tin raised $20 million for her period-tracking app.

A few weeks earlier, the telemedicine startup Nurx brought in $5.3 million for prescribing birth control through an app, and the company Ava rounded up $9.7 million for a wearable fertility tracker. Add to that some notable raises from earlier this year — $200 million in private equity funding for the fertility tech company Prelude and $14.7 million for its competitor Progyny

It was a lot of money in a short amount of time for women's health — an area once seen by investors as "niche."

"It's interesting to see how the world has moved since we started talking to investors three or four years ago," Tin, CEO of the period-tracking app Clue, told Mashable. "Back then, people would say it feels like a niche product, which it obviously isn't since it's relevant to half the world. We don't hear that anymore."  Read more...

Carrie Fisher's dog Gary is at his new home, but he's not tweeting

Though it was always pretty safe to assume that Twitter user @Gary_TheDog isn't really Carrie Fisher's beloved Frenchie pawing away at a keyboard, now we know for certain.

We also know that "Carrie Fisher's Dog" is just a fan account — not connected to the family — because whoever's been running it cleared things up once and for all.

"I should say that this account is not affiliated with anyone inside the family," wrote @Gary_TheDog, who's now up to 67,000 followers, Wednesday night.
