Tesla holiday Easter Eggs make your car dance, fly to Mars

Tesla continues to demonstrate why its success among a crowded field of auto giants isn't a fluke, this time with a special holiday greeting.

Hidden in a recent Tesla Model X software update released earlier this week was an Easter Egg that allows owners to put the car into a holiday-themed light show mode.

Pressing the Tesla logo for about five seconds on the car's control screen and then typing in the access code "modelxmas" starts the show, which also includes music and the car's unique "falcon wing doors" flapping in unison.  Read more...

Michelle Obama calls out Barack for his not so funny dad jokes in Christmas address

President Barack Obama just got burned by the first lady, in the most loving way, of course.

During the couple's annual Christmas address, Michelle told Obama that his dad jokes over the years haven't exactly been funny and that the president has "treated" the American people to countless numbers of them.

Michelle also shared some pretty wild statistics about the White House's holiday celebrations.

Over the course of the couple’s eight years in the White House, they’ve welcomed over 500,000 guests and the in-house pastry chefs have whipped up over 200,000 holiday cookies. Now that is a lot of sugar.  Read more...

These hilarious Christmas cards speak to your inner Scrooge

There's no Christmas law that says Christmas cards need to spread holiday cheer.

Since 2008, comedian John Cessna has been sending questionable Christmas cards to his friends and family, inspired by his mother's suggestion to "sober up" and start sending cards for the holidays.

Cessna shared his collection of brilliant cards on Imgur for everyone's enjoyment.

Focusing on the "sober up" part of his mother's request, Cessna's staged photographs feature a bunch of alcohol and drugs, or illustrate compromising situations likely caused by irresponsible binges. Nothing says Christmas like passing out on toilets, being tied to a tree with your pants down or burying a body. Read more...

Apple removes products from store amid patent war with Nokia

Apple's patent quarrel with Nokia has officially gone from minor tiff to full scale patent war.

It appears that Apple has taken down listings for Withings products from its online store (Nokia owns Withings, a company that makes Wi-Fi scales and digital fitness products.)

If you try and search Google for Withings products on the Apple Store, you’ll still be able to see the phantom listings, but if you try to click on them, a  message stating that "the product you’re looking for is no longer available on apple.com" pops up.

Apple's listings for Withings products still show up in Google searches.

This Christmas dance video is, well, you just need to see it for yourself

Nearing the likely end of her tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy has decided to fully embrace the whimsical side of governmental life in Japan.

Earlier this week Kennedy posted a video of herself and various government workers in Japan doing the cutesy "Koi Dance" (Love Dance) from the popular Japanese TV show "We Married as a Job." Since the show's debut, thousands have posted their own versions of the show's elaborate credit sequence dance online.

Clad in a baggy Santa Claus costume, Kennedy hits all the right Japanese cosplay-style moves as other U.S. staff in Osaka, Tokyo, Okinawa, Fukuoka, Nagoya and Sapporo add to the fun. The dance follows an earlier video in which Kennedy, again dressed as Santa, appears frolicking on a roof before (through the magic of editing) diving down the chimney with presents.  Read more...

A&E cancels controversial show about the KKK

Television network A&E announced Saturday that it's cancelling its controversial docu-series about the American White supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) after discovering that some on-air participants had been paid by third-party producers for their participation.

The network said that the fees were small and paid in order to facilitate access. "While we stand behind the intent of the series and the seriousness of the content, these payments are a direct violation of A&E’s policies and practices for a documentary," an A&E spokesperson said in a statement posted on its website on Saturday.  Read more...

Chewbacca singing 'Silent Night' is what you need right now

We'll pretty much see anything that features our favourite Wookie from Star Wars, Chewbacca, in it. Anything.

But this video of Chewie singing "Silent Night" is all you need, proving that beneath all that fur he has a beautiful voice to share.

The video is actually a very clever edit by the folks at YouTube channel How It Should Have Ended, who've put together snippets of his famous growl to create a new, heartwarming version of the Christmas carol. Makes you emotional, doesn't it?

Someone mistakenly put a 2Pac song in a Christmas hymnal

Remember that scene out of The Simpsons where Bart Simpson changes one of the hymns to Iron Butterfly's hard rock classic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and the whole church sung along to it?

Well, it's happened for real apparently, but during a Christmas carols event called "Joy To The World" in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

It appears the lyrics to 2Pac's song "Hail Mary," which shares the name with a Catholic prayer, was mistakenly printed in a booklet handed out to carolers on Dec. 11.

Pictures of the pages with the lyrics have since spread on social media, with someone named Andrew Choksy claiming to have taken the original photos at the event and sharing them with his friends on WhatsAppMashable has reached out to him for further comment. Read more...

12 brutally honest answers to those awkward family questions about your love life

LONDON — Happy holidays one and all. Tis the season for spending time with your lovely but mildly irritating family and distant relatives you haven't seen all year.

They want to hear all your news. Seriously, ALL of your news. You know, your job, your wellbeing, your home, and — naturally — your relationship status. Cool.

Unfortunately, unless you're coupled up and able to call someone your boyfriend or girlfriend, it's pretty tricky to find an answer for those awkward and annoying questions.

You could titter awkwardly or straight-up avoid the question entirely, but here's a thought: how about telling them the unfiltered, unabashed truth?  Read more...

In Australia, a traveler's Christmas is spent down at the beach

The holidays are meant to be about spending time with your loved ones.

But if you're thousands of miles away from your family at this time of year, that affection is better off turned to the beach.

There's plenty of them around Australia's endless coast, and matched with the searing temperatures that comes with a summer Down Under, travelers come in droves to beaches around the country. Everything else is closed, after all.

So while you're probably sipping on egg nog, rugging up in something woolen and staying indoors in the northern hemisphere, you're missing out on trees made of sand, waves, and a whole lot of holiday cheer... just done a little differently in Australia. Read more...

Xenomorphs are back in the first trailer for 'Alien: Covenant'

Start your Christmas off right: with blood spatter and alien murder.

Fox delivered the gift of an Alien: Covenant trailer late on Christmas Eve. After teasing audiences with a return to the Alien universe in 2012's Prometheus, director Ridley Scott appears to be going all-in this time.

There's a hatching egg, a facehugger, and yes, a brief glimpse of the series' iconic Xenomorph alien, which seems to remain true to the original design by H.R. Giger and Carlo Rimbaldi.

This is a red band trailer, so keep the kids away as you watch itAlien: Covenant arrives in theaters on May 19, 2017.

These 4-year-olds learning to share is too real

If you've ever had to deal with a young child, you'd know about how it can be a challenging task trying to teach them how to share.

But it does make for good — albeit slightly cruel — television.

Just look at this clip from British TV show The Secret Life of 4-Year-Olds, which has been getting shared around social media quite a bit. The show is set in a nursery, and five children have been given gifts which they all open on camera.

One of them, Skyla, has an extra bar of chocolate in her present. She's then hounded by the other children to share it, even though she clearly doesn't want to.  Read more...

The latest Run the Jewels album is out now, three weeks early

Years from now, we'll look back on this year and think, "Ok fine, 2016 wasn't all bad."

A bona fide Christmas miracle if there ever was one. Listen right here, or through your own streaming music provider of choice.

The duo's first and second albums — Run the Jewels and Run the Jewels 2 — arrived in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Super Typhoon Nock-Ten hammers Philippines

This is not the Christmas gift people in the Philippines were hoping for. Super Typhoon Nock-Ten slammed into the eastern parts of Luzon on Christmas Day with 155-mile-per-hour sustained winds, becoming the strongest such storm to make landfall there so late in the year.

This is not the first typhoon to hit the disaster-prone nation on Christmas, but it is the most intense, by a considerable margin. Previous Christmas typhoons were Category 2 or 3 storms, according to Weather Underground, whereas Nock-Ten (known as Typhoon Nina in the Philippines) hit the equivalent of a high-end Category 4 storm.  Read more...

Snapchat pushing for more AR with latest reported purchase

If the reports are true, your next Snapchat filter could include an even better dose of augmented reality — and might make online shopping even easier.

An Israeli business news site, Calcalist, reported on Christmas Day that Israel-based start-up Cimagine Media has been purchased by the disappearing photo app in a $30- to $40 million acquisition.

Cimagine uses AR in the retail space by allowing customers to "place" a piece of furniture or an appliance in their home to see how it would look before purchasing. As VentureBeat reported, this could be a push for Snap to get into commerce and shopping through its app.  Read more...

Being a human is rough, so here is my application to be a dog

To Whom it May Concern:

Hello! I am writing to express my interest in transforming my human self into that of a dog. I was thrilled to come across the opening you advertised and am confident I would be an excellent choice for this position.

First, I am a longtime fan of dogs, and have been very impressed with the dozens of good dogs I have met throughout my lifetime. It has been my longstanding belief that dogs are good and humans are bad. For example, dogs have never declined to release their tax returns, and are not weird about mixing different foods together. And to my knowledge, a dog has never cheated at Egyptian Ratscrew by constantly holding its paw above the deck even though its seat is already the closest to the middle of the table. Read more...

With the queen out sick for Christmas, everyone is wishing her well

The queen of England's Christmas plans were thrown off by a cold and everyone is worried about her.

Queen Elizabeth II was unable to join the royal family at her traditional Christmas morning services near their country estate outside of Norwich, England. The 90-year-old queen was staying inside to recover from what Buckingham Palace called a "heavy cold," but was planning to join her family for holiday festivities later in the day.

This is the first time in almost 30 years the queen hasn't gone to Christmas church services, so she really must not be feeling well.

J.K. Rowling tweeted this heartwarming Christmas message to her fans

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is spreading some Christmas joy and realness on Twitter this holiday season.

Rowling dedicated part of her Christmas Eve to tweeting about the difficulties of the holiday season as represented on social media.

Instead of simply sharing a family photo and wishing her fans well, Rowling instead decided to be a little more honest about the holiday season, acknowledging that not everyone has everything they want or need this Christmas.

I’ve had so many lovely messages wishing me a merry Christmas. Thank you! 1/12
