There's nothing beautiful about the manipulative and glib 'Collateral Beauty'

In a year when the originality of movies was first questioned then buoyed to new heights, there had to be some mediocrity.

Directed by David Frankel and written by Allan Loeb, Collateral Beauty is the story of Howard (Will Smith), a man struggling to cope with his daughter's death. In an attempt to "help" him, his coworkers (Edward Norton, Kate Winslet, Michael Peña) contrive a plan to make Howard seem mentally unfit for work so that they can secure a major account at their ad agency. And — act one spoiler here — they hire actors to approach him as Love, Time and Death, the three abstractions which, in a brief flashback, he tells us "connect every human being on Earth." Google's driverless cars will now have to prove themselves as a real business

After it looked to be putting our self-driving dreams on hold (for a moment, at least), Google parent company Alphabet has revealed its real plans for driverless cars. The project, previously one of the major endeavors of Google X, is getting spun out into its own independent company.

Dubbed Waymo, the new company will continue development of the autonomous-driving tech that has been in the works at Google for the last eight years. According to a Medium post from the new company's CEO, John Krafcik, Google prototypes have spent the equivalent of 300 years of time driving on roads since 2009 — data Waymo will build on as it continues to move toward its goal of making fully autonomous cars a reality. The Arctic is reeling from its warmest year since at least 1900

Arctic climate change went into overdrive in 2016, with record high temperatures eclipsing anything seen since at least 1900. Accompanying the record warmth were freak losses of sea ice, melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet and a host of cascading feedbacks that scientists have been warning about for years.

The record warm year reflects both human-caused global warming, which is hitting the Arctic harder than almost any other region on Earth, as well as natural weather variability that pumped even more heat into the region this year.

Scientists detailed the changes on Tuesday with the release of an annual peer-reviewed report that amounts to a physical of the Arctic environment, known as the "Arctic Report Card."  Read more...

Snowden tells Twitter CEO hate speech can be countered with 'more speech'

Edward Snowden thinks the answer to hate speech is to drown it out with other voices.

The former NSA contractor-turned-whistleblower spoke with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey via video on Tuesday, and touched on Twitter's struggle to figure out how to handle those who use the platform to spread hate.

"The answer to bad speech is not censorship," Snowden said. "The answer to bad speech is more speech."

Twitter has at times seemed to agree and disagree with Snowden on that point. The social media platform has become proficient at banning accounts that recruit for and promote ISIS, suspending some 235,000 extremist accounts from its service as of August. It also recently barred many accounts that espoused white nationalism. Both moves are obvious instances of a social media company controlling the speech allowed on its platform. Yet the company isn't devoted to this type of censorship.  Read more...

Samantha Bee has the perfect response to Ohio's anti-abortion 'heartbeat' bill

Samantha Bee has decided that, since every morning seems to bring us a "non-stop sh*t-geyser of presidential news" courtesy of Donald Trump, she wants to turn her attention to what the states are up to "while our eyes are full of feces."

In Ohio, it's just a regular day of further encroaching on women's reproductive rights, thanks to a new bill that would ban abortions once a heartbeat is detected — which can be as early as six weeks.

As Bee points out, "At six weeks most women won’t even know they’re pregnant — especially now, since every time we wake up and realize Trump is president, we all have morning sickness." Read more...

The move ups the competition between the company and Microsoft-owned competitor Skype for Work, which made its name in video conferencing, along with other services like Google Hangouts. It also follows rival HipChat's addition of a similar feature in August.

The feature, which will roll out in the next few days, is an expansion to the audio calling tools that Slack has offered since this spring. Slack users can use it to either call other team members directly or organize calls of up to 15 people. Read more...

One dad was so confused by 'Pokémon Go' he made a short film about it

Oklahoma's public bathrooms will soon be forced to post anti-abortion signs

It used to be that the only sign you would see in a public bathroom was a gentle, laminated reminder to perform the most basic of tasks — wash your hands.

On Tuesday, however, the Oklahoma State Board of Health approved regulations that would require the state's hospitals, restaurants and public schools to post anti-choice information in their bathrooms. Oklahoma won't be funding the effort, so businesses in the state will have to pay for the signs themselves, at an estimated cost of $2.3 million.

The regulations are scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2018. Earlier this year, the legislature passed a law requiring that the state develop informational pamphlets and content "for the purpose of achieving an abortion-free society." Read more...

Richard Sherman thinks Thursday Night Football is an 'absolute poopfest'

Sherman's Seahawks will face the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night, a mere four days after Seattle's loss to Wisconsin on Sunday. In 2012, the NFL expanded the sporadic Thursday Night Football so each team has to play one mid-week game per season, and players aren't happy about it.  Read more...

Margot Robbie to lead a 'Suicide Squad' spinoff with DC's female villains

You can't keep a good villain down.

Critics may not have been impressed with David Ayer's Suicide Squad (Mashable called it "the most disappointing movie of the summer"), but love it or hate it, the film still pulled in a hefty $745 million gross worldwide — and also inspired the most popular Halloween costume of the year: Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.

So it should come as no surprise that Warner Bros. has turned to Ayer to helm another film featuring Robbie's breakout character.

Mashable has confirmed that Ayer and Robbie are reteaming for Gotham City Sirens, a project centered around some of the DC Universe's most iconic female villains. The name comes from a 2009 comic book created by Paul Dini and Guillem March, which focused on frequent Batman foils Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy.  Read more...

Australia's 'words of the year' prove 2016 just needs to end already

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the Australian turn of phrase is a gorgeous linguistic riddle.

Even those who live there can be confused by popular phrases. Flip flops are called "thongs," and woe betide the Australian who says otherwise, for they will be dragged.

The Australian National Dictionary Centre have released their annual round up the most mundane popular Australian words of 2016 and in the interest of international diplomacy, we're here to help explain what the hell they mean.

Smashed Avo

Australians do love their brunch and the "smashed avo" is the king of all brunch foods. The problem is a certain journalist penned a "think" piece explaining that the reason young people couldn't get into Sydney's exploding housing market was because they spent too much on the food stuff. Plume is turbo-charged Wi-Fi on a budget

If we left it up to cable companies with their crummy, out-of-date Wi-Fi routers, we’d never have decent Wi-Fi. Thank goodness for companies like Plume. It gets adaptive networking right and does it on a budget.

Plume is a pint-sized, plug-and play dual-band Wi-Fi expansion and boosting system that competes nicely with more established players like Eero (a set I use and love). I easily set up a $179 Plume three-pack in my three-story house and was impressed with the results.

Unlike Eero, which builds a mesh network that recommends line-of-sight connectivity between pods for optimal performance (in reality, you don’t need that to make it work quite well), Plume uses lower-power pods that can work singly or together to improve overall in-home Wi-Fi performance. Backed by cloud-based technology, Plume promises to learn about your network performance and improve over time. Read more...

Afternoon of casual golf interrupted by a massive python eating a wallaby

Golf isn't a sport one would associate with high risk situations. Unless of course, you're playing a round of 18 holes in sub-tropical Australia.

Golfer Robert Williamse's casual Saturday round turned a little Planet Earth, when he spotted a 4 metre (13 foot) python crushing the life out of a wallaby, in the middle of the green, according to The Cairns Post.

Williamse told the newspaper that the python made relatively quick work of the lifeless marsupial, as bystanders watched on.

“The python swallowed it and rolled into the creek, then snuck back into the bush. It must have gone for a rest for the next few days," Williamse said. Read more...

Twitter suspends account lobbying against black deaths in police custody

The family of Julieka Dhu, an Indigenous Australian woman who died in police custody, is frustrated following the suspension of their Twitter account.

The suspension comes a few days before the results of a coronial inquest into the death are released.

Ms. Dhu's case has been the focus of national attention as the country contends with the continued deaths of Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander peoples in police custody — a tragic legacy of institutionalised violence.

The Twitter account's suspension matters, not least because social media has helped ensure that Ms. Dhu's death cannot be ignored. Read more...

Top Google searches show this nation's citizens had a v. v. odd 2016

In 2016, even Australia was unsure why it was competing in the Eurovision song contest. The country is, after all, a long way from Europe.

"Why is Australia in Eurovision?" was the sixth most popular "why is...?" search in Australia in 2016, according to Google's data.

It was preceded by choice questions such as "Why is my internet so slow?" not to mention the perennial faves, "Why is the sky blue?" and "Why is my poop green?"

While overall searches were pretty predictable — everyone was concerned with the U.S. election, the Olympics and the Census — things got weirder in the more existential sections. Read more...

'Driver Appreciation Day' is the latest gig economy stunt

Ride-sharing drivers might be without employee protections or health insurance, but at least they have Driver Appreciation Day — if they work for Lyft.

To mark the day, Lyft posted an animated short film featuring music by Sir the Baptist, who Zimmer said got his start in music while working as a Lyft driver. Apple's Sierra update 'fixes' Mac battery woes by removing 'time remaining' estimate

After the new MacBook Pro came out in October, a number of users complained about the device's battery life. Apple advertises 10 hours of battery life for all new models — the 13-inch Pro without a Touch Bar, as well as the 13- and 15-inch Pros with a Touch Bar — but some users aren't getting anywhere near that figure.

Now, with the new version of macOS, Sierra 10.12.2, Apple has a solution: The company decided to remove the "time remaining" estimate from the battery drop down menu in the menu bar.

Nikon D500 is a sport shooter's dream come true

Before knowing what I was doing, I had taken 10 photos with the new Nikon D500.

The shutter speed was set for sports while the continuous shooting mode meant I didn’t have to worry about missing a moment.

There’s a lot to love for fans looking to take a leap forward in the world of prosumer DSLRs, especially if you’re looking for speed.

Spec-wise, the Nikon D500 checks all the boxes you need to justify a $2,000 price tag for the body alone — the kit with 16-80mm VR Lens will set you back $3,070.

At the heart of the Nikon D500 is a 20.9-megapixel DX CMOS sensor and EXPEED 5 image processor. The sensor may seem like a downgrade compared to the Nikon D7200 or Nikon D750 with the former boasting a 24.2-megapixel DX CMOS sensor and the latter featuring a 24.3-megapixel FX CMOS sensor, but trust me, you're not losing much. Check out this collection of 14,000 'Jerry Maguire' VHS tapes

You had me at VHS tapes.

Jerry Maguire, the movie that just won't go away, will soon celebrate its 20th anniversary (congratulations on 20 meh years, Jerry Maguire). Video collective Everything is Terrible decided to commemorate the occasion by building a video store made entirely of Jerry Maguire tapes — over 14,000 of them, to be exact.

The store will be open to the public on Jan. 13 at the iam8bit Gallery in Los Angeles, and will close just two short weeks later, on Jan. 29.

How Airbus wants to completely redesign airplane cabins

Since the dawn of the jet age, airlines have adopted a uniform model for passenger cabins. There have been modest variations—a rear-facing seat here, a tiny first class bar there—but the basic template of forward-facing seats and rows has withstood the test of time because it’s efficient and makes money.

Futurists at A3, Airbus Group’s Silicon Valley research outpost, are contemplating a new paradigm. Instead of a design that’s set in stone when the aircraft rolls out for its maiden flight, they envision mobile modules a carrier could adjust rapidly, much the way freight airlines alter interiors for cargo. Between the horrific massacre in Aleppo and terrifying allegations that Russia influenced the American election, yesterday was a uniquely dark day for our planet.

But instead of actually exploring those stories, much of the media — including TV networks — chose to focus their attention on Kanye's visit to Trump Towers. Nothing could be more of a distraction, and Trevor Noah on The Daily Show explained the media's failure uniquely well.

"Oh, man! The media is the best,” Noah said. “It really makes you wonder how America ended up selecting a celebrity president when the media is so focused on the issues." Read more...

In order to use the app, you need to buy one of the postal service's Priority Mail boxes. Senders can choose between two different animated messages: a reindeer in Christmas tree lights or a penguin accompanied by other wildlife near an igloo.

“Our app adds that special touch by delivering cheer when mailing and receiving holiday gifts via Priority Mail,” USPS Chief Customer and Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President James Cochrane said in a statement.  Read more...

Jimmy Fallon and Jon Glaser achieve maximum comfort with the help of bizarre hoodies

By now, Jimmy Fallon is a professional when it comes to getting someone comfortable as a guest on The Tonight Show—but when Jon Glaser stopped by on Tuesday night, it just was the opposite.

Glaser sat on the couch donned in the "relaxation hoodie," a jacket meant for maximum comfiness with room for a music player and pockets that let you hug yourself. Naturally, Glaser brought one for Fallon and the two zoned out in what might be late night's weirdest interview ever.

So sit back, zip up and leisurely watch.

Tallest wave ever recorded could have swamped the White House

Located at the intersection of prevailing storm tracks and colliding ocean currents, the North Atlantic Ocean is home to some of the largest waves in the world. The region can now lay claim to a world record wave, after the World Meteorological Organization this week certified a record wave height of 19 meters, or 62.3 feet recorded in 2013.

The wave was measured by a UK Met Office buoy floating between Iceland and the United Kingdom on Feb. 4, 2013. The wave occurred after a cold front passed across the area, bringing winds of 50 miles per hour to that location.

This wave beat the previous record-holder of 59.96 feet, which was also set in the North Atlantic, back in 2007.  Read more...

Line's latest update lets you video call 200 of your closest friends

Japanese mobile messaging service Line just debuted group video messaging, complete with an absolutely bonkers feature: the chats can include up to 200 participants.

Line's answer to Google Hangouts — or maybe more accurately, the teen-friendly Houseparty app — is fairly standard in terms of function and design.

After creating a group of contacts, users can initiate a video call by simply tapping the video call button. Participants can enter the chat as they like, and new members can be invited to calls already in progress.

Given the constraints of screen size, only four participants at a time will actually get any face time. As the group grows, bubble-shaped avatars of everyone else will pop up on the right side of the screen, which users can drag into the main group of four when they inevitably get sick of friend number 150's sass. Stephen Colbert's 'Charlie Brown' Christmas special is extremely glum

A good rule of thumb this holiday season: do not ask Santa who he voted for.

If you do, you might end up like this sad Charlie Brown version of Stephen Colbert, who was dismayed to learn that all Donald Trump wanted for Christmas was for Santa Claus to vote for him. And Santa Claus obliged.

The result is a Christmas special with a protagonist sadder than Charlie Brown himself. Good grief.

Facebook's epic email blunder reveals their stance on Trump's Muslim registry

In the canon of corporate email screwups, this one's pretty great: A Facebook spokesperson accidentally sent an email to a Buzzfeed reporter instead of the colleague they thought they were forwarding the email to, and in the email, called President-elect Donald Trump's proposed Muslim registry a "straw man."

This is the first opinion on the matter from the tech giant, and it comes after days of refusing to comment on whether or not they'd help the president-elect with the technology to build his proposed registry.

The email, coming from an unnamed Facebook spokesperson, was apparently meant as an internal reply to a request from Buzzfeed for comment on the company's stance about the registry.  Read more...

No more screenshots: Instagram now lets you privately save posts

Instagram is making it a lot easier to mark posts you know you'll want to revisit with a new feature that allows you to privately save posts for later viewing.

Now, when browsing your feed or the app's "explore" section, you'll see a bookmark icon underneath the right side of a photo or video; this is the "save" button.

After you've saved a post, you can go back and look at it by tapping into the new "saved" menu in your profile. Saved photos aren't accessible to anyone else and users won't know if you saved one of their posts.

Image: Instagram

The feature should come as welcome news to many Instagram users who haven't had an efficient way to save posts they want to look at later. Until now users have often resorted to screenshots or messaging themselves in order to keep track of posts, says Instagram product Manager Ashley Yuki. (There is also a web-based workaround that allows you to save posts without a screenshot, but it requires a few steps.) Read more...

Director Mike Mills on the real people who inspired '20th Century Women'

"It's all about the mother," says Julie (Elle Fanning) to Dorothea (Annette Bening) in 20th Century Women. That's the secret employed by the film's writer and director Mike Mills, as discussed in a new featurette debuting exclusively by Mashable.

"Dorothea...is based a lot on my mom," Mills says in the video. In fact, the characters in Mills' film are all based on elements of women he knows, who he observed and interviewed as part of the writing process.

"The way I write, I don't really create characters; I kind of find existing, real people and work off of them," Mills says.

The 16 best TV shows of 2016

If you watch a lot of television, you probably already know about the theory of Peak TV — that we're fast approaching a critical mass of shows and eventually, the bubble will burst and networks and studios will have to cut down on the amount of scripted series they're producing, because viewers simply can't watch enough of them.

With more than 400 scripted series airing across broadcast TV, cable and streaming services, keeping track can be impossible, but one reassuring trend in the TV landscape is that quantity doesn't seem to be affecting quality.

If anything, the variety of different platforms and networks that are producing scripted projects has resulted in some of the best series in recent memory — shows with unique voices and fresh perspectives, conceived by a diverse array of creators with a singular vision. Read more...

Photographer explores the public and private personas of your favorite actors

Bored by the set-up of traditional film festival photo booths, Andrew H. Walker, a staff photographer at Shutterstock, took an unusual approach to celebrity portraiture for this year's Toronto Film Festival.

Back in September, Walker asked entertainers in attendance to pose for a series that explores the internal and external voices of celebrities.

"I was really curious with actors because they have, not only this personal inside voice, but they have a public persona that they put out there, and they also have their private self," Walker tells Mashable. "There's this whole other layer of themselves as people. I found that really, really intriguing." Read more...

Overall, the number of posts nearly quadrupled from 1.9 million in 2015 to 7.5 million this year. More than 2 billion words were posted to the site. People spent more than 3.6 millennia reading on Medium.

Unsurprisingly, given the election, Medium readers spent the most amount of time with stories tagged politics. In total, readers spent 457 years reading posts about politics, which beats the second place tag by more than 100 years.  Read more...

This line of lipsticks comes in tiny wine-bottle form

Though wine-infused cosmetics err heavily on the side of marketing gimmick, brands know Instagram's a sucker for novelty packaging.

Though Labiotte credits wine extracts with keeping lips and lashes ambiguously "healthy," any potential health benefits red wine might possess are likely best absorbed through an actual glass with dinner. Read more...

This is crazy but our snowman came to life and it has a great plan to unify the Democratic Party

Mom, dad, extended family and friends: This is going to sound crazy, but the snowman that me and the other kids have been building out in the front yard all day is alive.

Also, we think he's going to save the Democratic Party.

Okay, here's what happened. Me and the other kids built this snowman. Right as we're about to call it quits, we find this old silk hat, right? So we place it on his head, and — this is nuts, but I am being deadly serious with you right now — he began to dance around.

Then he stops dancing, he turns to us and with a completely straight face he says, "I am here to unify the Democratic Party." Read more...

EPA issues bombshell report on fracking and drinking water

Fracking has contaminated drinking water and strained local water supplies in some circumstances, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found this week in a highly anticipated report.

Adding to its troubling news, the EPA  scrapped language from a draft that said there was no evidence that fracking has had "widespread, systemic impacts" on U.S. drinking water.

The EPA's assessment "is the most complete compilation to date of national scientific data" on the relationship between fracking and drinking water, Thomas Burke, a deputy assistant administrator and science adviser at the EPA, said Tuesday in a statement. Read more...

Calling Bridget Jones one of the most influential women of the past 70 years is problematic

LONDON — Bridget Jones is the hapless, chain-smoking singleton who made granny pants sexy, and introduced "fuckwits" into our vernacular. Is she also one of the most powerful women of the past 70 years? Yes, according to BBC's 2016 Power List which listed her as one of seven women who've had the biggest impact on British women's lives.

The inclusion of a fictional character — on a list of women who've shaped history and who have existed IRL — is problematic. While Bridget might be everyone's spirit guide to single life, her contribution to history isn't all that note-worthy. And the naming of this character has proved hugely controversial on social media. How hard is it to pick an actual human being who has shaped history?  Read more...
