Polar vortex-type cold wave could freeze parts of U.S. next week

After a historically mild November, the start of meteorological winter is shaping up to be extremely cold and snowy for parts of the North America, including the U.S.

For weeks now, ultra cold air has been building up in Siberia, as the polar vortex has been wobbling around like a bad figure skater, displaced outside of the Arctic. Now it appears the Russian Arctic will warm up dramatically, relative to normal at least, as North America cools off — potentially big time.

The frigid air is coming in two waves. The first is already spilling across the U.S. The second, potentially more potent one, is on tap for next week.  Read more...

Adobrable bush baby inspires super-jumping robot

Researchers are looking to the natural world for inspiration that will one day help them design life-saving robots.

Salto is a monopedal and somewhat skeletal 10.2-inch-tall robot that can jump higher and more quickly than most other robots in the world today. A team of researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, revealed the new hopping bot on Tuesday in a study published this week in the new journal Science Robotics.

Instead of taking just one big leap, Salto bounces off a wall with impressive force to complete an even bigger jump, much as a parkour expert might bound from a ledge to a wall and then fly through the air to his next perch. The new robot could be a predecessor to a future tool that may one day jump across dangerous terrain to aid in rescue missions. Read more...

Woman shuts down saleswoman who called her $130 engagement ring 'pathetic'

When it comes to love, it's not about the money.

Quinn and Ariel McRae dated for two years before tying the knot. But a saleswoman where the couple bought Ariel's rings tried to put a damper on the festivities by calling the jewelry "pathetic."

"My husband doesn't have a lot, neither of us do," McRae explained in a Facebook post about the encounter. "We scrape and scrape to pay bills and put food in our bellies, but after almost 2 years of dating we decided that we couldn't wait anymore, so we didn't."

"I wasn't even thinking about rings, I just wanted to marry my best friend," she continued, "But he wouldn't have it. He scraped up just enough money to buy me two matching rings from Pandora." Read more...

Enjoy watching Milo Ventimiglia do push-ups with Ellen DeGeneres on his back

Jess Mariano grew up to be suspiciously buff.

Milo Ventimiglia, who currently stars as a '70s-era dad to three on This Is Us, visited Ellen DeGeneres to talk about the show. And, like Justin Bieber before him, he participated in the great tradition of showing off your muscles on daytime television.

Ventimiglia recreated an especially tender moment on the show between his character and his adopted son, Randall, by giving Ellen the same treatment.

"His adopted father literally carried him on his back and showed him that he will be there for his son for his entire life," explained Ventimiglia. "And so we did a bunch of push-ups,”  Read more...

Samsung latest Gear smartwatch is like a smartphone on your wrist

The Samsung Gear S3 is an excellent smartwatch just a few ticks short of perfection. With built-in LTE and GPS it’s more connected than rivals, but noticeably thicker as well.

The device gets off on the right foot by looking and feeling like a watch. Whatever you think of wearables, the more they look like the familiar and the less like technology, the better. Apple splits the difference with its Apple Watch Series 2; it has hints of classic watch design (see the digital crown) but also telegraphs “I’m wearing the future.”

The 'Overwatch' winter event kicks off on Dec. 13 (probably)

Here's hoping one of Reaper's holiday-themed voice lines is "Ho! Ho! Ho!"

Overwatch will seemingly kick off its first (and hopefully annual) winter/holiday event on Tuesday, Dec. 13. There aren't any details to share yet, but a tweet from the game's official account seems pretty clear.

You're invited! pic.twitter.com/MQZPZOW4Y1

— Overwatch (@PlayOverwatch) December 6, 2016

The tweet is just cryptic enough to leave an element of uncertainty hanging — does the event start on Dec. 13 or is it just an announcement? We'd bet on the former.

Tuesday is the day that Overwatch weekly updates launch. What's more, multi-week Overwatch events for the 2016 Olympics and Halloween occurred earlier in the year, so there's precedent. Blizzard likes to extend real world celebrations into its hit game. Read more...

Sheriff gets profane over why it took so long to arrest Joe McKnight's alleged killer

Ronald Gasser, the man suspected of killing former NFL and college football star Joe McKnight, was arrested on Monday and charged with manslaughter.

After Gasser allegedly fired three shots in a road rage incident in New Orleans on Thursday, authorities released the 54-year-old without charges on Friday night, citing Louisiana's "Stand Your Ground" law, which states that a person is justified in using deadly force in certain situations.

Gasser's release led to protests from NAACP representatives and an outcry on social media, as people criticized the slow-moving justice system. At a press conference on Tuesday, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand defended his department's investigation and scolded those who doubted it.  Read more...

7 practical gifts for people who always break their phones

Most of today's flagship smartphones can be described as beautiful, but fragile. Materials like glass and metal also make smartphones more prone to slipping out of our hands than the plastic models of previous generations. Not to mention big phablets are nearly impossible to use with one hand, making them even more likely to accidentally take a tumble.

Nobody likes a cracked a screen, a dented bezel, a destroyed charging port or a crushed headphone jack. And nobody likes paying to have their broken phones replaced.

Whether you're shopping for a clumsy friend or family member (heck, or maybe yourself), here are seven practical gifts for the person's who's always breaking their phone. Read more...

Netflix's 'Fuller House' Mr. Bear toy is the shared-viewing experience we want

Netflix is hoping to pull on some heartstrings this holiday season with a brand new way to snuggle up to loved ones near and far.

The company announced the specs for "Connected Mr. Bear," a plush teddy based on Stephanie Tanner's beloved toy from the early seasons of the original run of Full House. The second season of the Fuller House revival series set to stream Dec. 9, so Netflix is hoping to double down on its nostalgia and sentimentality.

Spreading the love: Paris love locks to be sold to help refugees

Paris is not only the "city of love" but the city of love locks.

The weighty tradition of locking small padlocks to the sides of Paris bridges as a symbol of eternal love became so trendy in the past few years that some crossings were covered with them.

The Pont des Arts bridge in particular became the epicenter of the locking trend and about a year and a half ago, the city starting removing them citing safety reasons.

But now officials are thinking creatively about what to do with the thousands of signed locks.

The city is set to sell batches of the locks with the proceeds going to refugee groups, the Guardian reports. Read more...

This is not normal, people: Arctic and Antarctic hit record low sea ice

Things in the Arctic are just getting weirder and weirder. And not in a good way.

Freakishly high air and ocean temperatures during November caused sea ice to trail far behind typical levels, with sea ice extent ending the month at a record low. Sea ice extent averaged 3.51 million square miles for the month, which was 753,000 square miles below the 1981-2010 average for the period, according to data released Tuesday by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Boulder, Colorado.

The section of missing ice was about the same size as the entire country of Mexico. Or to put it in terms of U.S. states, the missing ice is greater than the states of Texas, California, Montana and New Mexico combined. Read more...

Finally, Marshawn Lynch is here to give the clip the treatment it deserves.

The line between Instagram and Facebook is getting very, very thin—and here's why you should care

An algorithmic feed. Live video. A seemingly unquenchable thirst to copy Snapchat. Sound like an app you know? You'd be forgiven for thinking the answer was Facebook, though, it's not.

Instagram's the app you're looking for, and it's been steadily moving closer to Facebook (which owns Instagram) in recent months.

And on Tuesday, the company took the next step in that direction, and announced it was adding the ability to "like" comments within posts.

While Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom billed it as a way to "encourage positivity" on the platform, for many, the move's just the latest in a series of ways Instagram is more and more often resembling Facebook. Read more...

Top YouTube clips of 2016 prove this country wishes it was the 51st state

Australia did its part for the global monoculture in 2016.

The top 10 videos watched by the nation during the year were heavily American and heavily banal.

The list, announced by YouTube Wednesday, was dominated by The Late Late Show with James Corden's infamous "Carpool Karaoke" segment.

Corden's clip with Adele topped the list overall, but Aussies could not get enough of the late night host belting tunes with Jennifer Lopez, Sia and First Lady Michelle Obama as well. Yeah, Sia is Australian, but barely.

The only two homegrown clips in the top 10 were by the comedy YouTube channel Superwog as well as radio station Triple J's "Like a Version" cover session, which saw American artist, Halsey, cover an American singer, Justin Bieber. So, points for effort? Read more...

'Bohemian Rhapsody' lyrics applied literally are a real crime thriller

Queen's 1975 classic is quite the operatic odyssey, and as many people know, it's the perfect song to lose your voice to after a few drinks at karaoke.

What has long been thought of as a song which relates to frontman Freddie Mercury's personal troubles has been twisted into a stylistic, neo-noir police standoff, with dialogue that only uses the song's lyrics.

The Golden State Warriors just aren't fair

The Golden State Warriors just aren't fair. They aren't fair because they have a player who can score 60 points in 29 minutes.

The Warriors aren't fair because that player — Klay Thompson — is their purported third option on offense.

And the Warriors aren't fair because Thompson, even though he was erupting for 60 points, had nothing to do with Golden State's most jaw-dropping highlight on Monday.

The highlight in question started when Zaza Pachulia won a jump a ball, then tipped it back to Draymond Green. Green threw a football-style bomb downcourt to a streaking Steph Curry. Curry touched the ball for just the briefest moment while going airborne and flicking a blind alley-oop backwards over his head. Kevin Durant soared in to flush it home. The ball didn't touch the floor once. The crowd, as they say, went wild.  Read more...

Huge spider crashes a family dinner and look, he's BYO'ed a fresh meal

Another day, another scary AF example of an Australian animal tackling prey bigger than itself. As if the recently-spotted huntsman spider dragging a mouse around wasn't enough.

Ottaway and her partner were sitting down for dinner on Sunday evening when they noticed the "dinner-plate sized" spider (believed to be a huntsman) clinging to the glass door right next to them, with the sizeable gecko in tow.

She told Caters that despite the "gorgeousness" of the lizard, he was obviously doomed. "It was too late to save him, so we let nature take its path. It's creepy isn't it? But fascinating in a strange way." Read more...

Apple just revealed the most-downloaded app of 2016

Apple just revealed the most downloaded apps of 2016 and the top spot should come as little surprise to those who have been paying attention: Snapchat.

As if we needed more proof that Evan Spiegel's app was having its best year ever,  Snapchat beat out Facebook, Instagram and Pokémon Go to be the most-downloaded free app in the App Store in 2016, according to Apple.

Though much of the list will come as little surprise as Facebook, Instagram, Google Maps and YouTube regularly land the top spots in the App Store, the order may be less expected. Facebook's much-maligned app, Messenger (which currently has an average App Store rating of just three stars) landed the second spot, while the summer's massive hit Pokémon Go came in at number three. The company that sells Snuggies just sued Amazon

The makers of the Snuggie blanket, BaconBoss and other "As Seen on TV" products filed a lawsuit against Amazon Monday.

Allstar Marketing Group, based in Hawthorne, NY, filed the suit against Amazon.com in New York's Southern District over claims that counterfeit products were being sold on the site, according to court records and a Reuters report

The companies said they were losing money because of sellers offering low-price, knock-off products, according to the report.

These companies make it seem like they're selling real Snuggie blankets and other items on their Amazon product pages, leaving confused customers to leave bad reviews, the plaintiffs claim.  Read more...

Football star rushes to comfort young fan battling cancer after Facebook post

Here's something that will warm the coldest of hearts.

Mahalia Murphy from Sydney, Australia, posted an urgent request on Facebook Tuesday for her terminally ill friend. And just like Batman, one of her friend's saw the signal and responded instantly.

Kia Lettice, who has been fighting cancer, had "roughly four hours to live," according to Murphy's post. All Lettice wanted is for Australian rugby league player Greg Inglis or former player Beau Ryan to come and see her in order to "boost" her up.

Within half an hour of the post, Ryan answered the call despite being 120 kilometres (74 miles) away. Read more...

Buzz Aldrin is recovering in hospital thanks to David Bowie M.D., yes really

The second man on the moon has had a hell of a week.

While accompanying a tourist group to the icy plains of Antarctica, former astronaut Buzz Aldrin's health took a worrying turn.

The 87-year-old was airlifted to nearby New Zealand after his "condition deteriorated," according to a statement

By curious happenstance, the Apollo 11 pilot saw his path to recovery supervised by one David Bowie — the medical doctor that is, not the late musical and Space God.

Aldrin's mission director Christina Korp tweeted out a picture of the two men deep in conversation, alongside Bowie's MD plaque at the Canterbury Hospital, joking "you can't make this stuff up." Read more...

Facebook ranks as the top tech company to work for in 2017

Facebook is apparently connecting with many of its own employees.

It ranked as the best tech company to work for in 2017 and came in second among U.S. companies overall, according to a new report from Glassdoor. The ninth annual list is based on employee reviews posted on the job site from Nov. 2, 2015 to Oct. 30, 2016.

Facebook took the number one spot overall in 2011 and 2013 and was number five last year. This year, management consultancy Bain and Company returned to the top spot.

It was another good year for the tech industry overall, which accounted for 20 of the top 50 companies in the United States. Apple and Google, along with Bain, are the only employers to make the list for all nine consecutive years. Read more...

'Never say never': Joe Biden pulls a Bieber when asked about running in 2020

What a difference a day makes.

When Joe Biden reportedly told a CNN reporter that he might have a proverbial crack at the U.S. presidency come 2020, political corners of the internet were a'flutter. But Vice President Biden's appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Tuesday quelled some of the excitement. For now at least.

In his first talk show appearance since the election, Biden explained that in matters of the presidency one should, as Bieber so poignantly put it, "never say never."

Colbert quizzed the meme lord after he lamented not running last election, though he says he ultimately "made the right decision." Read more...

How to get a job at Facebook — and why you'd want one

Once again, Facebook's being recognized as an incredible place to work. Glassdoor's annual list ranks it as the number one tech company to work for, based on the last year in employee reviews.

Lori Goler, who's worked at Facebook since 2008 and serves as their "Head of People," is, of course, one of the people the company can thank for that. She's overseen Facebook's growth from 500 employees to more than 14,500 across 50 offices in 30 countries.

The annual list isn't the only ranking she takes into account for personal job satisfaction, though — Facebook conducts its own internal reviews and surveys. And according to those, there's a lot to like about working at Facebook.  Read more...

Pokémon theme songs for Japan, Korea and the U.S. are totally different

It wasn't too long ago that the Pokémon Go craze put the anime theme song "Gotta Catch 'Em All" back in our heads.

But in Japan and Korea, players were listening to very different tunes.

American YouTuber Dave Levene uploaded a video comparing the English, Japanese and Korean versions of the TV show's opening songs, and they're each surprisingly unique.

While the U.S. version is straight up rock, the Japanese version (めざせポケモンマスター, or "Aim to Be a Pokémon Master") had a melodic J-pop style, with a soaring vocal line.

The Korean version (모험의 시작, or "Start of an Adventure") was a rock anthem set to a marching beat. Read more...

If all goes to plan, Amazon might be the messiest tech story of 2017

If the hype is to be believed, Amazon will be targeting Australia from Sept. 2017 with extreme prejudice.

"We are going to destroy the retail environment in Australia," an Amazon staff member is reported to have said, according to the Australian Financial Review

As further indication of its intentions, there were numerous reports Wednesday the company has local trademarks pending across a variety of products, including its home assistant Amazon Echo.

While Australians can already shop on Amazon, spending about A$500 to A$700 million according to research published in August by Citi, international shipping rates and wait times can be a deterrent.  Read more...

The enduring cultural power of 2016's #IndigenousDads hashtag

Despite its critics, social activism was stronger than ever on Twitter in 2016.

In Australia, hashtags like #blacklivesmatter, #letthemstay and #loveislove dominated according to Twitter's own statistics, but the country's #IndigenousDads movement also had lasting power.

On Aug. 6, people began sharing images of their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fathers and grandfathers after a "racist" cartoon was published in The Australian newspaper, sending the grassroots hashtag trending.

Drawn by Bill Leak, the cartoon came on the back of an ABC news program that exposed the horrific mistreatment of young people in the largely Indigenous juvenile detention centre, Don Dale, in Darwin. Read more...

Android app updates will get drastically smaller, again

Updating apps on your mobile device isn't just a matter of a few seconds anymore; with apps (games, especially) steadily rising in size, a larger set of updates can easily grow into gigabytes of data and many minutes of downloading.

Google addressed the issue earlier this year by switching to a new compression algorithm, which the company says reduced the size of app updates by 47 percent on average.

Now, the company has made even bigger progress by using an app updating technique called File-by-File patching which makes app updates 65 percent smaller on average compared with the full app.

James Corden and Jason Schwartzman shoot a film entirely in Starbucks

You don't need big budgets and fancy sets to make a movie.

All that's really required is a script, a Starbucks full of amateur actors, and the will to make it happen.

Luckily, James Corden has all three of those things. In the clip above, Corden visits a Starbucks in LA and finds a man working on a movie script. He then proceeds to recruit members of staff and the public (and, randomly, Jason Schwartzman) to turn the script into a reality.

Needless to say, the finished product is a thing of beauty.

Don't be like me: How to keep your desk plant alive and happy

My desk plant is dying, and I am devastated.

For a little over two years, I've kept a pothos plant, aptly named Plant, at the corner of my desk at work. It was gift from an editor in my first few days of work, and it's been with me ever since. It thrived under the harsh fluorescent lighting in our old office, and when time came to move to a new, sunnier space, I cradled Plant in my arms for the 7-block walk to its new home.

The new office's enormous windows were a welcome change, and for a while they suited Plant and I just fine. Every Friday I would carry Plant and its increasingly long vines to the office kitchen where I would water it.  Read more...

Everyone but the Chinese are fretting about Matt Damon in 'The Great Wall'

Oh, and Matt Damon's starring in it.

But in having to face the press this week to promote the movie, Damon inevitably had to respond to one of the biggest complaints about the movie so far — that the main role should've gone to an Asian person.

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, commander-in-chief of the Combined Fleet, had opposed Japan’s alliance with Germany and Italy and its invasion of China

He had also traveled and studied throughout the United States, and understood that Japan’s island empire could not hope to defeat the Americans' vast resources and industrial capacity in a prolonged war.

India may still be using fossil fuels for much of its power needs, but the country is quickly turning to renewable power sources.

If you visited Kamuthi, in Tamil Nadu, one year ago, you would find delight and peace in its temples and greenery. But today, everyone is talking about its brand new power plant.

Kamuthi, located 90 kilometers outside Madurai, is now home to the world’s largest solar power plant at a single location. Spanning a 10-square-kilometer area, the plant has the capacity of 648MW, enough to power about 150,000 homes.  Read more...

Chris Pratt and Jimmy Fallon get weird with holiday Mad Libs

Mad Libs: not just a wacky road trip game anymore.

On Tuesday's Tonight Show, Chris Pratt and Jimmy Fallon performed a holiday-themed scene written using the classic fill-in-the-blank game: a gripping tale of a Christmas gift gone missing.

And thanks to a truly genius word choice from Pratt, Fallon broke down laughing 10 seconds into it, mostly because his character was named Ding Dongs the Elf.

Here's how you could have predicted Trump as 'Person of the Year'

When Time magazine announced President-elect Donald Trump as its choice for its 2016 "Person of the Year," many expressed outrage, despite the fact that his selection was perhaps one of the few predictable things about the surreal, fever dream that is 2016.

Twitter critics of Trump quickly linked Trump's selection to terrible past selections like Adolf Hitler (1938) and Josef Stalin (1939, 1942).

Why not try on this costume made of human teeth?

Forget your witch costume or the sexy nurse outfit you wore on Halloween. It's time to reconsider teeth as playful wardrobe.

A photo that's been making the rounds on r/wtf features a full body costume made of artificial human teeth. It appears to be a prop from the Syfy series Channel Zero.

Say what you will about covering your face with silicone teeth, because this is frightening. Still, the look is also stunning. These are teeth that (look like) they've been brushed at least three times a day and are subject to a regular flossing routine.  Read more...

Bill Murray sings 'Happy Birthday' to happiest 94-year-old grandma

Who better to sing "Happy Birthday" than the king of sarcasm and sadness, Bill Murray?

A video that's been making the rounds on Facebook recently features Murray singing to a delighted 94-year-old woman literally named "Grandma Wible."

Repeat that to yourself: Wible.

In the caption for the post, Grandma Wible's grandson, Noah Wible, explained why this birthday meant so much to her.

"She doesn't get out much anymore, but wanted to attend her first Baylor basketball game . . . On the way to the game she shared with me how excited she was to get out of the house. See about this time last year my Grandfather Wible (her husband) of 73 years passed away and she has been feeling lonely lately. Well little did she know that for her birthday she was going to sit front row, Baylor would win, and she would not only meet Bill Murray, but have him sing Happy Birthday to her." Read more...

People are decorating their Christmas trees in honor of Prince this year

Prince, who made everything he touched more exciting, is colliding with the holiday spirit this December.

A few fans are honoring the Purple One, who passed away in April, by decorating "Princemas trees" — festive holiday firs adorned with everything from purple bulbs to a delightful Prince tree topper.

Atlanta comedian Darrell Joyce was one of the first to post his Princemas tree to Facebook on Sunday, complete with a "When Doves Cry" quote.

And other Prince fans followed suit, sharing pics of their own purple holiday decor. Prince-themed Christmas ornaments — including a snowglobe — also appear to be a thing. Read more...

Starbucks app to get voice ordering: One more way to avoid human interaction

Expending the energy to swipe through the Starbucks' app menu to order coffee first thing in the morning is hard, right? It would be much easier to just groggily command Siri to queue up the order — with extra sugar.

At Starbucks Investor Day 2016, the coffee giant teased a new feature that will soon make its immensely popular mobile app even more intuitive: an AI-based voice command ordering system called My Starbucks Barista.

An expansion of Starbucks' new high-end Italian bakeries, Princi, was also announced at the event.  Read more...

Kid Rock is selling Trump shirts and they're as bad as you'd expect

The best place to voice your politics is on your t-shirt.

No one knows that fact quite like Kid Rock, the badass musician who's essentially just America's uncle you're worried about running into at the reunion. But he showed up. On a motorcycle. And he's about to scream during a game of bocce ball.

He kicked off the shirt collection with a bold slogan.

You know what they say: no amount of text is too much for a shirt and no text is too incomprehensible to print!

Can love survive the 'Fifty Shades Darker' trailer? Can any of us?

If the first 30 seconds of the Fifty Shades Darker suggest that this isn't going to be a crazy kooky sex movie — surprise! Anastasia Steele is back with Christian Gray and everything is creepy Beyoncé covers and everything hurts.

Fifty Shades of Grey ended with the couple splitting, probably because they spent too much time sitting at tables negotiating sex contracts. Anastasia displays a distinctly not-steely resolve in Darker by agreeing to go to dinner with her ex ("Because I'm...hungry") and ends up sliding off her panties under the table (Did they even get food??). Fitbit buys its struggling rival Pebble

Fitbit wants Pebble's technology, but not its hardware.

The big-name activity tracker will buy its smaller rival's software and firmware intellectual property and absorb some of its staff, but not acquire its smartwatch, Fitbit announced Wednesday morning.

The acquisition had been rumored before Fitbit's announcement.

“With basic wearables getting smarter and smartwatches adding health and fitness capabilities, we see an opportunity to build on our strengths and extend our leadership position in the wearables category,” Fitbit CEO James Park said in a statement. “With this acquisition, we’re well positioned to accelerate the expansion of our platform and ecosystem to make Fitbit a vital part of daily life for a wider set of consumers, as well as build the tools healthcare providers, insurers and employers need to more meaningfully integrate wearable technology into preventative and chronic care.” Read more...

Michelle Obama on election night: 'I went to bed'

"I went to bed," she told People in a joint interview with her husband President Barack Obama. "I don't watch debates. I don't like to watch the political discourse. I never have. I barely did with him [Barack]."

She continued: "Once you do what you can do, then you rest easy. It was in the hands of the American people."

Truth is, Trump hated 'Time' until it put him on the cover

By now, you've probably heard the news.

President-elect Donald Trump has been given the coveted title of Time magazine's 2016 Person of the Year, and he is thrilled, of course.

Despite the fact that Time labeled him as president of the "Divided States of America," Trump told NBC's Today show receiving the title was a "great honor" that "meant a lot" to him.

However, being the openly opinionated and indecisive man he is, Trump has not always shown Time love. In fact, he has had some truly terrible things to say about the magazine in the past. Very sad! The worst. Read more...

These 'Hidden Figures' portraits profile brainy, badass women

Great art begets great art.

In Hidden Figures, Taraji P. Henson plays Katherine Johnson, a physicist and mathematician who, along with Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe), helped the United States land on the moon. Their untold story is inspiring young artists, and a collection of their diverse, moving portraits of the characters is available exclusively on Mashable.

"This film and the story on which it's based, is so enticing because women of color are being portrayed as equals, if not greater, with their white male colleagues and supervisors," said Jamila Silvera, one of the featured artists. "It's also super intriguing to see this kind of story released during such an exposed time in the U.S. I think all humans with eyes and ears (and appropriate age-ratings) should experience it as it might have a little lesson for us all." The internet sees Donald Trump as the Devil on new Time cover

Is that the Devil in disguise?

'Time' named Donald Trump person of the year on Wednesday, unsurprisingly. And seemingly half the internet was convinced the magazine's designers decided to portray the president-elect as Satan on the cover.

With a suspect placement of the iconic M over his bouffant mane that lent the former reality TV star two sharp red horns, Trump looked a lot like Beelzebub to some.

The theory made the rounds on Twitter Wednesday.

2016 was supposed to be the year of VR. Instead, augmented reality ruled

All signs pointed to a revolution: Powerful VR headsets — Facebook’s Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive and Sony’s PlayStation VR were about to make their official, consumer-ready debuts, while Google's Cardboard and Samsung's Gear VR we're making noise in mobile. The stage was set for 2016 to be the year virtual reality took off.

But a funny thing happened along the way to the VR revolution — it turns out much of the content and tools needed to support the new world of VR weren't as fully cooked as the hardware. Add to that the late release of Oculus Touch, the handheld accessory that allows for deep interactivity with the Oculus Rift, arguably the VR headset the public has heard the most about, and you have a recipe for a VR market still struggling to find its footing in its march toward mainstream users.  Read more...

People are mercilessly ridiculing Montreal's scrawny Christmas tree

This year, Montreal wanted to have the tallest, most magnificent Christmas tree in all of North America. It did not do that.

But the city did achieve part of its goal. Its new fir is not the tallest in North America (it's about six feet shorter than the Rockefeller Plaza tree), nor does anyone seem to find it magnificent in any way. But it sure is a tree! Good job on that.

And as it is a funny-looking thing displayed in public, people have lots of jokes about it. Hey, we shouldn't be so harsh — Charlie Brown would probably be very impressed. Read more...

'Final Fantasy XV' updates take a page from 'Destiny,' and that's great

It's hard to say anyone saw this coming for Final Fantasy XV.

While the long-in-development game is a hit, there are plenty of things to criticize about it. And Square Enix has some aggressive plans for addressing the concerns raised by fans and in reviews.

"We have been listening to your ideas on how to make the game experience even better, and so in addition to the previously announced content, we’ll be providing free updates to the game throughout the coming year," game director Hajime Tabata wrote in a new blog post

What's noteworthy is the nature of these changes. While some fall under the umbrella of standard game rebalancing — like making a particular weapon feel more powerful — others have the potential to switch up the flow of the game. Read more...

The 3D-modeling software shaping Singapore's future is straight out of a sci-fi film

When you envision three-dimensional city models that you can navigate, explore and alter in virtual reality, there's a good chance the first thing that comes to mind is a video game, or a sci-fi movie that takes place many years in the future.

These technologies are hardly far-fetched, however. Today, there's real, practical application for such 3D-modeling software — and it's helping shape our cities.

Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform, for example, is just such an innovative tool. The technology influences how urban planners, architects and government officials plan for the future.

Singapore is one of the forward-thinking cities using the technology in innovative ways. A compact island state, Singapore faces numerous challenges as its population expands. The city-state's temperatures, for example, can be unbearably hot during certain times of year — but designing for improved wind flow throughout the city can help keep residents comfortable.   Read more...

Thousands of snow geese were killed after landing in a toxic lake

When a snowstorm hit Montana last week, tens of thousands of southbound snow geese were forced to land in the nearest source of open water. It just so happened that source was a toxic pit from an old copper mine.

Several thousand geese died soon after settling in the pit, which holds about 45 billion gallons of highly acidic water, according to Montana Resources, one of the mining companies responsible for the Berkeley Pit Superfund site.

Witnesses described the scene on Nov. 28 as "700 acres of white birds," Mark Thompson, the environmental affairs manager for Montana Resources, told the Associated Press. Read more...

Pope Francis doesn't want the media to be obsessed with sh*t

The Pope is a bit tired of the media's shit.

Or, maybe a better way of putting it: he's tired of media focusing on the world's many dumpster fires.

In an interview published Wednesday by Tertio, a Catholic weekly publication in Belgium, Pope Francis spoke of the great good and harm media outlets can exert on the public, and offered some thoughts on best practices.

"I believe that the media should be very clear, very transparent, and not fall prey — without offense, please — to the sickness of coprophilia, which is always wanting to communicate scandal, to communicate ugly things, even though they may be true," Francis said. "And since people have a tendency towards the sickness of coprophagia, it can do great harm." Read more...

T-Mobile debuted a new program on Wednesday that allows multiple numbers to be used on a single smartphone.

Called DIGITS, the program also allows for one number to be used across a variety of different connected devices including wearables.

T-Mobile said that the new program is also available on Verizon and AT&T smartphones.

Amazon’s grocery store disruption has a very human problem

And yes: It could create some jobs, too. But as for the jobs it'll leave behind, that's where bad news gets worse. It's not just that Amazon's grocery-buying disruption will cost jobs—it's that the people who rely on those jobs are already our country's most economically vulnerable.
